RE: Doubled my fuel economy!
wow, has it been so long already? seems like just yesterday i was posting on here. anyways, back to doing my spi's, about 15 motors later. i did it to a sts t21e with about a gallon run through it. best run time i could get was about 8:30. i decided to spi again since runtime is winning races out here, and 10:00 is the magic number. took out the motor today and broke the 13:00 minute mark on a very dusty track in my rc8t. with traction it could be more.

RE: picco idling woes???
new bearing? no, sounds like tune is way off, forget the manuals settings, weather, %nitro, plug, etc. all vary and will tune different from the start. set the needles flush and go from there, every time.

RE: O.S. V-Spec catastrophic failure?!?!
if your motor comes to an abrupt hault for no reason always test it by hand before throwing it on the box, you will save many motors that way. small damages that can be easily fixed can turn to catastrophic disasters if you throw a "crunching" motor right on the box. sounds like the rod or bushing went, bearing cracked and is lodged on top of the piston, piston cracked and chunk is on top of piston, etc, etc. take off the head and the backplate and it should all be pretty clear, another busted v-spec.

looks ok, just kinda dry. i've had motors sit for months and they still have a nice oily sheen.

RE: Benefit to walking the track?
it defineately helps to walk the track. you can stand in spots and see how big or how small gaps are in turns and you can adjust for that. if there is a crazy double or triple that maybe you can jump from one side better than the other.

RE: RE:
doesn't matter who makes them, performance wise they are at the top. i love the performance. price wise they are in the middle and durability wise, for me, they are at the bottom. i've had 3 and cracked 3 cases in under 3 gallons. my 2 sts's went 5 gallons at least before they had a problem. i have since rebuilt 2 with nova cases and so far so good.

RE: Connecting rod lifespan?
ORIGINAL: SLAYERDUDE I'm just a moron and when I can tell there is some play in the top end by when the piston is at TDC I can ''feel'' some play it's time. There is a definite ''loose spot'' for lack of better words. At TDC I can feel a spot where the piston stays and I can wiggle the crank and I'm pretty sure the rod is moving. This is a K5.9 HPI Savage XL engine with 7 gallons.
that's the best way to tell, you can get away with a little slop but too much will take away idle, or worse. thats why its important to tune to smoke and not temps. if the rod is properly lubed it should last 5+ gallons easy. also if properly lubed the rest of the motor will also. best thing to do is every race day, in practice, richen the hsn about 1/4 turn right from the start, then run. lean it 1 hour at a time until it has enough performance for th track and layout. something like a big triple is a good gauge, lean it until you have good smoke and can clear the triple with proper run up. then adjust your lsn a bit if needed.
ORIGINAL: Colt4g63 The JX .21 is an outstanding engine. All the performance of a Speed with a cheaper price tag. You wont be disapointed... Everyone has there favorite engine and this is mine :)
that means a lot coming from you. with those statements i think this has been converted to a ninja thread. probably my next motor. how is it similar or different from a stock jpx21 in performance?

RE: Mega Brake upgrade !!
you can get the same results by using a stiff spring in the linkage instead of fuel line, i run my brakes at 35% and its a bit much if the track is loose. and locking up your tires is not good.

RE: sts engine ?
rc-mall on ebay has them and all the parts, i personally would not spend the time or money re-building one. just buy a new one, takes about 3 weeks though. i'll be getting another soon for a club motor, can't beat them for $130 shipped. no carb issues, bearing issues or anything. just seal them up, break them in and run them till they die. its the buggy version of the 3.3.

RE: CEN R2 Quality Horror
if everyone on here wrote what happened in their first 30 days of running ANY rc car it would look a lot like your post. how about the first time you tried to ride a bike, or fish or skate? all sad storries, but you stick with it, you get better and it gets cheeper. to get a full race day (about 8 tanks, 60 minutes-ish) out of my cars i have to wrench on them about 3 hours, each, so your total ther was a bit longer. still not bad for a begginer. rtr's always get a bad wrap, i wish i had the money to go buy an rtr now after all that i have learned and see how good rtr's really are. i hope those 45 minutes were at least worth it. by the way "metal gear" does not mean "good servo" or "will not fail" (sounds like lhs talk to me). sounds like your motor was not broken in enough to bash around with yet (good job cen for replacing it), i'll bet it overheated and the plug went bad, thats why it won't start. maybe glow ignitor is dead after 35 minutes of starting. and your first 30 days budget looks to be right on with the usual spending to keep these cars running. have fun.

RE: Stripped screw... help!!!
if the clutchbell is shimmed right the screw should never come out. i do use locktite but just about 1/4 drop on my finger, then i spin the screw in it and screw it in. just enough to fill the threads. and never use red locktite. if the screw were stripped in the threads i have seen people cut off the end and thread on an adapter.

saving money? its not like afo is like 30$ a bottle, just get the afo already. its like $3 for a 6 month sized bottle. as a substitute i would use ms. butterworths or karo syrup though, it doesn't get any stickier than that.

RE: Bent Shim
once you tighten the head down any "tweak" to the shim will dissapear. more shims = less power, lower mileage, longer life. less shims = more power, better mileage, shorter life.

RE: Bevel gears design?
mugen and ae have spirals in their buggies, it allows for a constant state of mesh, when one tooth exits there is one hole tooth meshed and another beggining. only problem i see is shimming accurately is crucial, also bearing play needs to be checked for regularly. if the bulkhead or diff bearings get wobbly there will be too much play in the mesh.

i heard on the 2.0 they stiffened the radio tray but i would still take out the rear tray screw. some of the guys here have done that and had no servo issues yet.

RE: shimming???
ORIGINAL: j_blaze right, you want to have as many shims as possible without the bell binding, so the play should be less than half shim worth. spin the bell first with no screw also to make sure the shoes aren't dragging.
...also, every time the motor comes out put a drop if 3-in-one on the front bearing and holding the motor pointing up spin the clutchbell a few times

RE: **Caster Racing F8T Brushless Truggy**
sorry about your truck, its not the first e car i've seen burn up like that. until esc's frying or batteries burning or stuff glitching are a thing of the past i'm staying away from electrics. yeah they are fast and cool and whoop up on the nitro cars all day but if the smallest mistake is made you have catastrophic failure like that. if racing the k8t/f8t on a loose track try no front sway bar. it makes the truck act like there is traction when others may be struggling to get it and the initial turn-in is awesome.

RE: Look what I did today! Hyper 7 project
ORIGINAL: djzachtyler So I took it on it's first run just now since resurrecting it. Mind you I have only run the first tank through the brand new Hyper .21 Turbo engine, and it is still rich, but let me tell you all something... the power is phenominal, and I found it VERY hard not to WOT this sucker. The Hyper 7 drives like it is on rails, I only flipper over one time in the street and that is cause I was pushing a corner tooo hard and knew it... OOPS, MY BAD!!! I now know why have always heard good things about the Hyper engines... at half throttle this thing was only begging for more, but as I am disciplined and all (well sorta) I went easy on it, and will continue to do so through the next 4-5 tanks. I also have a bit of fine tuning to do as far as camber and toe go, as I have noticed that on my left front tire the inside tread has been completely worn off (crimefighters + asphalt = baldness quick) which is ok, as these were the beat old tires that came qith it originally, so I figure WTH let em get chewed up , at least I have a baseline for knowing just how far off things are, so time to get out my digital micrometer calipers, camber, and ride height gauge and tune my suspension up... anyone out there have any suggestions for the best baseline settings for ride height, camber, droop, etc. I want to get this dialed in for track practice sunday, and since I am new to the hyper 7 anyones input would be appreciated!!!
5/5/5 diffs, 45wt f/r, -2 camber f/r, laydown shocks in front, upright in back, -3 toe out in rear and 0 in front. should be a good start and not much to change from there. good luck.
