RE: Has RCM folded?
I miss the great covers RCM used to have. If you are old enough to remember the ones around 69-73, you understand.

RE: orange rx performance
I have three orange receivers. One in a foamy, one in a Trex 450 (with sattelite) and the other in a Trex 500 (with sattelite). All three were flown extensively last season and never gave me any trouble. Range in the foamy with no sattelite was fantastic. These seem to made in a modern facility and look to be be very well made. My name brand E-Flite Yak Carbon Z has been nothing but trouble and had some very wierd stuff happen with its Spektrum receiver. So...nothing is perfect but overall everything is much better than it was years ago ;-)

RE: Kraft '74 Single Stick Radio - Rebuild Thread
These guys have tons of springs: http://www.mcmaster.com/# I was going yo use them but they do not ship to Canada and refuse to send to a US postal service I use regularly. But I'm sure you will find any spring you need on their site. Andy
ORIGINAL: hook57 Thanx for the update David (I think I might have to pull an enroute on Stuntflyer; he'll know what I mean!) Since I found a few relics in the garage attic last year I did some more poking, yep, found my very first Kraft SS, a series 74 too, in a box I had completely forgot about. Of course I never took the batteries out, but did so asap. Some corrosion on the battery tabs but no excessive leakage. In looking over the board I believe I can remove the Rf section rather easily, it looks as if it only has v+, neg, encoder in and Rf out to antenna, might just mess with it regardless. I have the MS2K kit layed out on the table, will start soldering next week too. I've decided to update the P-L Comp-Six Tx. I'll try to post also, but the next few months will be hectic with work, training, and my oldest one getting married in June (I'm feelin old!) David, do you or anyone (perhaps Andy H.) know of a sorce for the gimbal scissors springs? How's it going O'j? Hope you've got something ready for the flying season! Mark
RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
These Futabas are unfortunately totally incompatible with 2.4 modules as they only operated on pcm and no ppm can be obtained. There a few posts on another thread concerning this incompatibility. Nice condition.

RE: Kraft '74 Single Stick Radio - Rebuild Thread
btw, my photos of the silver MS2K show pins 63/64 being used for sim. This was prior to Phoenix and is not recommended. I will get those new snaps soon. andy

RE: Kraft '74 Single Stick Radio - Rebuild Thread
J7 pins 5&6 are used for my sim output and it works perfectly with Phoenix. There is another ppm available on 63/64 (can be switched to ppm in software) but the voltage was too low for the Phoenix interface (works on those cheap usb interfaces with free sims). J6/rf interface was used to feed the rf module. On the Kraft I used pins pins 1 and 2 from J7 for serial db9 plug and shared ground (pin 6) for ppm and serial connections. I added a 120ohm resistor on the + ppm line and a 100ohm resistor on the -ppm lines for protection. Keep the builds going! Andy

You cats are going hog-wild! Excellent and keep up the enthusiasm. Just spotted hits on my blog from this thread and wanted to send my compliments after reading some great discussions I will be wiring another MS2K in a few days. Would the ppm to mini plug/serial interface wiring photos be helpful? Great work David! Cheers, Andy

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
This is a great thread guys! That was my Futaba in the snaps David posted. They do look like full metal gimbals but only the knob, shaft, scissor cover and some scissors bits are metal. The whole main two axis gimbal and bezel are plastic. If you swing the stick to one side and use a flashlight, the dark plastic parts are immediately visible. They are super cool collectibles but the switch placement is not really a useable design and appears to be more driven by industrial design than flying requirments. The best option is to find a used Proline Competion Single Stick. They are often less expensive and way more robust due to full metall gimbals as opposed to a cosmetic smattering of metal on the visible components. Danny Millers conversions of the Prolines is a benchmark of superb restoration with completely modern ergonomics and electronics and once a MS2K encoder is thrown into mix you have the radio equivalent of a Shelby Cobra!

Jaybird, One of the most inspirational places for transmitter retrofits is Gordon Anderson's site. RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
Actually I did make the pot choice based cycles. The person using the radio is a heli pilot. The numbers of input moves requires a pot with a long cycle life. This is very important, otherwise you would be swapping cermet pots every couple of months! And btw a$2000+ Futaba 14MZ uses a micro conductive plastive pot that costs about $2!!! You are clearly lurking and looking for conflict. I read some of your other posts and can see you interest is strictly in shooting other folks down. So to end this nonsense, in the past and currently all the finest radios use conductive plastic pots. If it's good enough for a $2000+ radio like the Futaba 14MZ, I think your cyborg-like piloting skills will find it acceptable. Andy

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
This excerpt is from rchalloffame.org. It is a discussion of the last and finest Orbit radio made. It might clarify things for you: “We opted for Spectrol conductive plastic pots for the gimbals, Bourns plastic pots for trims and Mil spec parts for everything else in the radio. ****It had a plugin RF module in the Tx, the Rx was much like a ProLine with 2 boards, the Rf section and the decoder, with the servo motors being replaced with Escap coreless motors. It also had a liquid crystal display for all meter functions. It also had an upgraded metal open gimble that was made by a guy named George Prather, he is also the guy who made the stick knobs that were adjustable. They were made slightly eccentric inside so you could twist them to loosen it and adjust the length then twist to tighten again.”

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
I think you need to qualify "we"! All the Major companies from the 1970s on used conductive plastic pots on their top radios. I think you need to do some research before talkin trash dude. Take a look at Danny Miller's superb conversions for modern choices being made. And yes, I flew the radio for a full weekend and it felt superb!

Hi Cees, Those pots were chosen because they fit and are of a high quality. I normally use Bourns 6639 pots but they were way too big for this case. Cheers, Andy

RE: Kraft Radio Conversion
Super nice snaps! You are on the right track; gut it and play with the new parts until they fit. I found the computer parts placement version didn't take the vertical plane into acount and just playing with the bits worked out best but then I am not a 3d cad dude. This incarnation of the Kraft single stick is a beatiful design with metal scissors in the knob. The only issue I found is that the the main axis are fairly sloppy and can use new guides. These can be made out of aluminum and would bring this stick into the metal gimbal level of precision. Cool project and above all have fun! Andy

RE: Idiots in New York, RC plane buzzing Statue of Liberty & Brooklyn Bridge
Found the page: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=839735&page=32 But I think you are missing my point. If you need that video receiver you are using a "booster" transmitter RF module like the link I posted. I might be wrong, but the dude is still one of the biggest morons to disgrace our hobby. Only the clowns that flew the heli into the girl in a public park with a ban on rc aircraft top him. I know there are legit FPV fliers reading this. Could one of you please enlighten me as to the type of transmitter Her Trappy was using?
