RE: *Official* Caldera 10E Video, Picture And Discussion Thread
I never have less than two complete sets of diff gears for my sons Caldera on hand. They're not the best in the business.
Second that. It seems as if they are operating at max capacity with the stock motor. Have been through 2 sets front and back already.

RE: *Official* Caldera 10E Video, Picture And Discussion Thread
I have the entire velinion system in my caldera 10e. I didn't have to remove or modify anything with the motor. I have experimented with several pinion gears to modify the gear ratio. You can get them with as few as 12t. I have a 20t gear that I use occasionally. I have a cooling fan on the velinion esc and a cooling fan and heat sink on the motor. Haven't had a problem with overheating. I actually prefer the hobbywing esc's as they are more versatile and have more programmable features, but use the velinion esc as it seems better mated to the motor for my purposes. I have blown out my front diff running this setup with a 3s lipo. I was bashing so that is to be expected. But the truck is fast.
ORIGINAL: PetRock The Velineon will fit if you take the black plastic endcap off (it just snaps on and off). Another option would be a Tacon 3660 3500kv: it's a bit longer and has a wider rotor than the stock motor... the KV is almost identical so the top speed will be almost the same: but it has a lot more torque: accelleration will be very noticably better. And it's less than $35 new!
RE: Changing gear ratios in Caldera 10e?
So I just got my 3s Lipo's. What a difference from the 2s. I am running the traxxas velineon motor and esc with cooling fans over both. Haven't changed the pinions out yet (the set screw is a different size). Nice controlled wheelies are easy. This thing really flies now. I will see if I can get some speed data with a GPS.

RE: Changing gear ratios in Caldera 10e?
I ordered several pinions from Redcat (they are relatively cheap) with various number of teeth 15-21. I am going to try different combinations and see what happens. The Velineon motor as per traxxas can be set up with a gear ratio of 2.45:1. I plan to run 3S lipo. Cooling fans on my ESC and motor. I will let you know how it works out.

RE: HPI Mini Recon
guessing its due to the pro-pulse being a buggy, and like most buggies they sit lower to the ground, and the front shocks are generally shorter
The propulse truck has 4 equal length shocks. I will contact rchobbyexplosion and see what they say.

RE: HPI Mini Recon
Just picked up a set of the aluminum shocks as the stock ones didn't make it too long. Got the megapro/pro-pulse kit from rchobbyexplosion. The shocks in the kit are different lengths. 2 shorter ones and 2 longer ones. The all look shorter than the stock ones. Anyone know what the deal is? Thanks.

RE: Looking to purchase Redcat RC
ORIGINAL: Dads like rc too The only issue I have with electric is still the batteries. If you really want to be equiped to take your equipment out to the track or a local park, you need 3 or 4 batteries if your bringing more than 1 car with you.. Then if you want your batteries to last they need to be charged and balanced properly. You can find cheap batteries all over the web but most good quality lipo batteries are no cheaper than $50-$60 a stick if you want good run time and a battery that doesn't lose a cell every 3 months. Same thing with the charger. You can find plenty of good, cheap single lipo charger/balancers for under $50 but if you have several cars and a stack of batteries to run them your going to eventually want a multi charger like the hi-tec 4 bay charger. That's another $200. For me the investment is too great to go all electric. Right now There is 4 RC cars in my house not including the 2 sumo's. 3 are nitro and 1 is brushless. If all of them were brushless it would cost me a fortune in batteries and charging equipment.
I hear you about the batteries. I can't say I like having multiple batteries laying around. We have 2 electric trucks in our house and 8 batteries. I was able to find decent deals on reputable batteries and chargers, still you are right the cost of them is not insignificant. Again, for me it boiled down to put the battery in and go play without having to worry about engine issues. I suppose it really depends on what your preference is.

Changing gear ratios in Caldera 10e?
Modified this post. I am looking for spur and pinion gear options for the Caldera. I am looking for a lower gear ratio than the almost 4 that the stock setup provides. Any suggestions? Thanks.

RE: Looking to purchase Redcat RC
I have a Caldera 10e going on 3 months now. I made the decision to go with electric as I read through the many posts of challenges with nitro powered engines, so the reliability and ease of electric was was convinced me to go that route. It used to me that nitro or gas based models were faster and more powerful, that is not the case any more with the new electric motors. I have had a very positive experience with my Caldera 10e. It has been durable without any issues.

RE: Changing gear ratios in Caldera 10e?
Changing the gear ratio allows me to modify the speed. If I am stuck with the redcat spur gear 51T and the redcat pinion 13T, I don't have any flexibility. I am really looking to change my gear ratio to increase speed. I can see the difference in pitch and thickness. Just trying to determine my options. Thanks. RE: caldera 10e bodies
I believe most 1/10 truck bodies will fit. You will need to drill the holes. Also, because the Caldera is a little bit longer than most 1/10 trucks the wheel wells don't line up exactly, but it's worth it to have better quality body.

RE: Twister XB Pro
If you are using 2s Lipo batteries, I have mine set to LVC of 3.0V, some people do 3.2V. If you are using NIMH, you don't need LVC protection. Here is the link for the ESC manual just in case. http://site.hobbypartz.com/hobbywing/HW-13-V2.pdf

I know on my Caldera, I was able to program it so that if the radio got shut off or the car went out of range, the esc would go into brake mode so to prevent the truck from taking off like you are describing.

RE: What is the name of the connector they put on the new Redcats
The new redcats come with 4.0 mm Bannana style plugs for the battery to ESC connection. I have had good luck getting batteries from hobbypartz.com, though I know you can get them almost anywhere.

RE: New tires for Caldera 10e?
I put a set of Stampeded talons on my Caldera. I actually thought that the traction was less. The stampede tires are wider so they gave the truck more stability.
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner
The stampede talon tires wont perform any better really, but they are a higher grade rubber and should last longer.
RE: caldera 10e up grade motor
Thanks for the tip. I figured that as I couldn't program the ESC I would be stuck with the Traxxas settings regarding throttle, punch and brake. I know that there are 3 modes that can be programmed, but none of them controls the above factors.

RE: caldera 10e up grade motor
So I installed the Traxxas VXL system in my Caldera as well as a new Traxxas servo. The install was pretty easy. The biggest challenge is finding space for everything. The Traxxas ESC is larger and takes up a bit more space. I have it mounted with plastic superlock which I got from Radio Shack. I had to mount the reciever on top of the center frame. I wanted to get everything in and test it out. Everything is functioning well. Haven't had a chance to really take it out and put it to a good test. The ESC is less programmable than the stock one. The other modification that I had to make was to convert the ESC battery connectors to bannana plugs from the Traxxas style. Overall, pretty easy install to do.

RE: caldera 10e up grade motor
The VXL ESC has the proprietary Traxxas connectors. I have all banana plugs on my batteries. Am I better off running an adapter or converting the ESC battery connector to banana plugs or vice versa, converting the batteries to the Traxxas connectors if I upgrade?

RE: caldera 10e up grade motor
Which VXL system are you referring to? Also, I noticed that the VXL Esc doesn't have a cooling fan, should one be installed? Thanks.
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner any 540 size can motor will fit. You would have to modify the chassis some to fit a 550 size can motor. If you want to be able to use the stock pinion(which I would) then you want a 540 size motor with 3mm shaft. The traxxas VXL motor has a bit more RPMs and more torque than the stock motor and will bolt right in. I have installed that motor on a volcano. Is the ESC rated for 3 or 4s?
I was mostly looking for upgraded/stronger steering components, linkages, as well as the plastic parts that all of the steering connects to/with. Is there a good place to pick up the aftermarket stuff? Thanks.
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner There are alloy hubs.... Front "C" hubs and rear hubs. You can upgrade the steering servo with any 1/10 servo you like. Also you can upgrade the shock towers to alloy ones. If you can find them, the earthquake has alloy capped shocks that will work on the caldera. Upgrading to a 2s lipo battery is a great way to go. more power, speed and longer runtimes.
RE: Alignment on Caldera 10e
It seems like I have got the alignment as accurate as I can at this point. One of the things that I came across while trying to diagnose the problem was there seems to be a lot of in and out play of the bearings as they sit in the front hubs. It is limited to the fronts only. Is this normal? I would think I would want it with as little play as possible? Thanks.
