RE: Rhino problems!! WHERE ARE YOU ERIC!!!
Diego - Just in case you haven't tried it, have you purged/reprimed your fuel pump? Everytime I've had wierd flameout problems, purging the bubbles from the pump/solenoid/fuel line solved it. Just thought I'd mention it.

RE: Reaction ARF - PST/BTE All-Composite Sport Jet
Hi Mike - thanks for your help. i think my 120 comes in only a bit heavier than the P-80 you had in your short nose Reaction. Do you remember how much weight you ended up with in the nose of yours? It's a bit discouraging to think i'll be flying with 2 lbs, 12oz. nose weight in mine. Just curious about how yours ended up. I am going with the rear recommended balance location. Thanks!

RE: Reaction ARF - PST/BTE All-Composite Sport Jet
Hi guys - Just doing the last few things to finish up my Reaction (short nose). I am looking for some input on CG. I've got 2 lbs. of lead shot in the nose and looks like i'll need another 12 oz. or so to get it to balance at 5 3/4" from leading edge. How many of you are flying with the CG back further? I have a P-120 installed. I have a pair of LiFe 2100mah for receiver and a 5200 Duralite for ECU installed on top of the factory valve tray setup. I wanted to be able to get at them instead of stuffing them in the nose. I guess I could go bigger on the receiver batts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I currently have the small tank installed but am debating whether to order the larger one. I figured I would set my timer for 4 min. for the first flight and see how it works out. I'm thinking with the 120 installed I'll do most of my flying at 50-70%. Anyone flying their Reaction with a P-120 small tank combo? Thanls for any ideas I might not have thought of......

RE: The new Tornado sport jet
Hi all - I picked up my Tornado, servo and strut package from Alberto last week. This kit, although somewhat similar in look to the Falcon 120 is not even remotely close in construction. The wings are fully sheeted and it is built and covered extremely well with much attention given to wood selection. The struts and wheel package are Spring Air, as are the retracts. The strut package matches the plane perfectly. I must say for $475 the base kit it is an outstanding value and is perfect for entry level, small field or sport jet guys (like me!) The manual although not in the box can be downloaded from www.modellbauusa.com and is highly detailed with excellent color photos. It looks like it should go together in a weekend or 4-5 weeknights. The servo package, although not digital, is made up of high quality metal gear servos perfectly adaquate for the airframe. The included extension set and LiFe battery are very nice and at $250 for the bundle, is really a no-brainer. try shopping for the equivalent servo, extension and battery combo as I did and you'll see what I mean. Add a Super Bee or P-60 and you are in the air with NEW stuff for less the $3k. ...and no, I'm not on Flacco's payroll!! :-) I'm looking forward to getting started on mine. I have to finish up the Sprint rehab. I'm doing first. Update:Having just read back through the thread, I see most if not all of this info has been posted a million times. Sorry but I guess I should have read through it a bit before adding my two cents. DOH! I don't spend too much time here in the forums.... See ya at the field.........Jeff

RE: Boomerang Sprint Build Thread!
I fly my Sprint with a Modellbau T-750 with max RPM turned down to 120,000. This is 5000 off the recommended 125,000. It will still go ballistic from slow level flight with two-thirds throttle. I'm thinking a 28lb. P-120 would be too much for the Sprint, even de-tuned. HOWEVER, wouldn't the 120 be just perfect for an Elan? :-)

RE: Rabbit starter???
Hi all - "JEFFREY BENKO..waiver number..164480" here..... seems like I should monitor this forum a bit more often, guess I'm missing all the fun. :-) Let's establish a few things first; 1) Ralph....I can fight my own battles, you don't know me well enough to use me a fodder for your beef with Eric. You got issues with him, keep it between you and him. Leave me out of it. 2) For the record, I've received great service from Eric and J/C. He's answered all my e-mails promptly and always answers the phone when I call. 3) Regarding my issues this past Sunday(not Saturday), I re-installed my back-from-the-factory Bee in my Tango Saturday night, did not run it before going out to the field on Sunday and ran into some issues. First being a bad plug, second being a possible bad cell on ECU battery that read 8.4v. I'm not going to bother Eric until I've tried everything I know to get it running. When I run out of ideas, THEN I'll contact him. This is my hobby, I like to try to figure things out and then ask for help.... 4) This same motor has run flawlessly almost every weekend for over 4 months with nothing other than a few balky starts, I've since found out my plug wire was not pulled far enough out. This before the bearing failure which was repaired no charge by JC. 5) I only had one Bee out there on Sunday, not two, so we have some fundamental issues with the facts. 6) Finally, Ralph, I appreciate your help on Sunday. Thanks for that. However, after reading some of your posts on this forum all I can say is you need to learn some manners bud. ....and don't use my name in your posts anymore please..... RE: What do you guys think hotliners are?
Wow - all this talk of warmliners, hotliners, strawberry shortcakes and whatever else.......we all have our points of view I guess. Admittedly I'm a Sunday flyer wannabe 3D guy and at best I consider myself an intermediate level pilot. I have fun with my UCanDo 60, and 3D foamies BUT nothing, I mean nothing has been as much fun as the GP Siren I've been flying for the last few months. This is only my second sailplane and the first one was an E-Flight Odyssey which was very tame. My Siren setup is AXI 2826/10, Jeti 40Amp ESC, Kokam 3S1P 3200Mah Lipo(20C) and CAM 13x7 prop. With this setup it will go straight up and give me some good high speed passes but inertia retention seems a bit lacking as it bleeds off speed pretty quickly. Depending on how aggressively I fly I can stay up almost an hour but most flights are 30 minutes or so. My Kokam Lipo is not even getting warm with this setup and I'm sure I'll be trying out a 14x9.5 before long. One thing though, I never leave for the field without the Siren these days and it's always the plane I fly first and last for the day. The whistle as it flies by is intoxicating, for lack of a better word and just looks so damn pretty in the air..... I think the Siren will make performance sailplanes more accessible to the masses and for those of us, like me, who get hooked on hotliners will move on to the ION's and Big Excel's. I see an ION in my future for sure. I'll still fly the UCanDo, 3D and warbird foamies, the occasional bipe or Extra 300. HOWEVER, the Siren just makes me smile....... The guys that say sailplanes are boring just haven't flown one that performs. I know of two guys at my field with Sirens in the works after seeing mine fly.....and isn't that the best compliment you could get? Jeff Benko Gold Coast Radio Controllers

Hanger 9 Edge 540 or GP Patty Wagstaff???
If you're an Extra fan, take a look at the World Models 27% Extra 300. I haven't assembled mine yet but I've seen a few of them fly and those I've talked to that own them seem to love them. The ARF kit looks to be outstanding; excellent covering, wood choices look good and nice clean glue joints. Price is around $380. I've heard good and bad about the H9 Edge, and the one that flies at my field has a nasty tip stall problem. I've heard nothing bad abvout the GP Extra. Good luck! Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks

VMar Edge 540
Thank you Mr. G. - I have high hopes for the Edge also! I am putting a K&B .61 in mine, which is not a powerhouse but is quite light and compact and has great throttle response. I felt it would be underpowered with a .46. The airfoil is quite thick, and the large control surfaces suggest it will be a good 3-D performer......if there is not enough power for good vertical than what is the point, right? I'm not sure I agree with cutting the hinges off...seems like a huge amount of work with little gained. Given they are pinned it will be a big job. Another item that was irritating was the cheesy ABS wing servo hatches. VMar should have just surface-mounted the servos and been done with it. I had to use a very long servo horn and it still binds against the hatch at full deflection.....using EPA on the aileron servos will be a must. Did yours have glue streaks all over it? Many of my seam joints did not clean up even with mineral spirits. I set mine aside for a while for a couple of foamie projects, (GWS Zero and P51) but will be getting back to it next week. I'll keep you posted on my progress from this thread. Good luck! Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks AMA 82103

WM 27% Extra300 - Glow or Gas?
I think there was another thread on this a while back however I would like to revisit the subject. I picked up a WM Extra 300 yesterday (Patti Wagstaff version!) but won't be assembling for a while due to other projects. I had originally planned on putting an FX 1.60 in it for simplicity's sake however now I'm considering gas. I'd like to hear from both camps on the benefits of gas vs. glow. I already know about the difference in fuel cost but am wondering if having a second fueling system and whatever else one might need to fly gas is actually worth it. I have much glow experience but none with gas and am not even familiar with many gas engine brands although I've heard of 3W, Zenoah and few others. I'd like everyone's thoughts on power delivery, reliability, cost, weight and any other relevant issue supporting glow or gas engines. Thanks Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks AMA82103

Breaking in GWS electric motors
I've read and heard of some references to breaking in electric motors and gearboxes, however nowhere in any GWS documentation do they mention anything about doing this. Does breaking in an electric motor make it last longer or perform better? Can a break in procedure improve the performance of a used GWS engine? Finally, Can anyone inform me of the proper way to break in a lower-end GWS engine/gearbox combination such as the IPS or EPS 300 system? I've assembled and flown the GWS Tiger Moth, Pico Stick FD and Beaver without any type of break in. Now that I'm almost finished with the P51 I was curious about break in procedures and performance. Thanks in advance for any asssitance. Sincerely, Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks

ARF's gliders
I had good luck with the E-Flight Odyssey. It's a good value for $100 and climbs well with an 8.4V pack. The matching speed controller for it is the E-Flight Maxx 25 but any 10-15Amp ESC will work fine. It flew very well for me and the only bad characteristic I remember would be it's tendency to snap hard to the left if it stalled. I'm sure this was a characteristic of it's lack of polyhedral..... The new E-Hawk by Ace Hobbies/Thunder Tiger looks pretty good also for $150. It has ailerons also. Good luck! Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks

VMar Edge 540
I received and e-mail response from Kelsey at Richmond R/C concerning the VMar Edge 540; -The residue glaze left over from what VMar call the "Sure Seal" process can be removed with mineral spirits. They also recommend polishing with ArmourAll to give the Polycote a better shine. Info on the Richmond website concerning this can be found at Polycote Info -The wing joint issue has been solved by VMar releasing a wing joint fuse plate that is available at no charge for early versions of the kit. Wing nuts for the wing bolts will also be supplied in future releases. I also feel I should mention that Richmond R/C is very responsive after the sale. For this reason I will most likely give them additional business in the future. Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks

Increasing Throws
No, I meant the control "arm" on the servo itself. I'm sorry I said control "horn." I also forgot about the Avistar using only one servo so the method I suggested will NOT will not work. For this, I apologize! It DOES work when one servo is controling one flight surface however. It is possible to move the control arm forward or backward a notch on the servo itself to get more throw either up or down. In your case I would consider turning the clevis's in a few turns so you do have more up throw than down and cranking down the horns on the torque rods a few turns so you have more throw overall. Don't crank the clevis's in so much that your ailerons act like spoilers however. If you do you will lose lift. Again, sorry for creating confusion blueangel.

mechanical vs. computer adj
Engineering aspects aside, Huber did hit on what I feel is the answer to your question which was how to effectively increase the roll rate of your Avistar. The Avistar, Superstar and almost every high-wing trainer roll much bettter by having a greater amount of throw when moving up instead of down. You can do this easily by moving your servo control horn back(away from the control surface) a notch and adjusting the clevis for neutral accordingly. It's easier to see than explain but once you try it you'll see what I mean. It won't take a lot of extra through to make your Avistar roll like a champ! Good luck! Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks

VMar Edge 540
Some obsevations about the new Edge 540 from VMar, which I just started assembling and received a few weeks back. -It is a very pretty aiplane, with graphics embedded in the covering and seems to be a good value for $170. The canopy is already attached and the cockpit detail is excellent. The fiberglass cowl and wheel pants are high quality. -A few days after I opened the box the covering started wrinkling up but was was easily corrected with heat gun and iron. Using an iron re-adheres the covering to solid wood areas and keeps the wrinkles away longer. The covering pulled away from an open joint under the stab. Be careful with the heat gun or seal all open edges with an iron first. -Glue streaks show up at every joint where the covering joins. I intend to call Richmond R/C and ask them if I can do anything about it. -VMar uses an aluminum tube to connect the two-piece wings to the fuse. This is usually reserved for more expensive models however the wing roots do not fit well (gaps) and the screws to attach the wings should be replaced with wing nuts or thumb screws. -One of the ribs just inside the aileron servo hatch was crushed due to sloppy assembly. This makes me concerned about what I cannot see elsewhere. -The graphics on the right wing are smeared somewhat. Not sure what caused this. -The included hardware seems adaquate for the kit. -Epoxy fingerprints from gluing in the hinges on one side mar the otherwise excellent covering job. My impression is that it will be underpowered with a .46. I'm going to use a K&B .61. I'll let you know how it flies when I get it together. Jeff Benko Palm Beach Skyhawks
