Picco 80 FIRE
Looking to get a ballpark value on a Picco 80 FIRE aero engine with a header and tuned pipe. Not much info out there other than they were good engines and were from the 80's. This one is in good shape with strong compression. I do know they were shimmed for FAI fuel and you need to add shims for nitro. Anyone know the thickness recommended for the shim when using 10 to 20% nitro? Prop size and pitch? Jason

RE: Are OS screws made of butter?
I have used this on stripped OS muffler screws: http://www.harborfreight.com/12-piece-screw-remover-and-quick-change-bit-set-95530.html You still have to be careful as this can easily take the rest of the center of the screw out leaving you with a cone shape stripped out screw. OS screws are made of cheese - butter would be an exaggeration[:D] I buy stainless metric screws at the local Tru-Value but they do not have the M3.5 screws that are used for the carb or the FSR mufflers. RE: TD 049 Carb Body
I used a red one on a TD 051. The fit is tight and needed a wood block and a small hammer to get it on all the way. Not sure if it will ever come off. I used a thin film of high temp red RTV to seal around the back of the cnc carb body and the front retaining nut and then wiped down the excess RTV. Any air leaks can lead to an eratic needle setting. Jason

RE: .049 medallion throttle exhaust
I believe that the SPI cylinder is your problem. Instead of pulling in fresh air you are pulling in exhaust gas. SPI and exhaust restriction type throttling do not work. Put a sure start cylinder on it and it should run better. With the Galbreath head it may also be over compressed. Try more head shims and see if the RPM picks up. Jason

RE: Thread size on OS 10 needle valve assembly
I ran into this problem with a OS MAX 19 steel fin that was missing the NVA. I bought a OS10 NVA and could not find the thread size. I found that a 6-48 gun tap was a close fit. It is a little tight and had to work the NVA in to the carb body that was repaired but it worked. I believe it may be a M4 x. 5 or possibly M4 x .35 thread pitch but I could not locate one locally. I found the 6-48 gun tap at the hardware store for $2.50. Hope this helps. Jason

RE: Cox Olympic 15 Rear Rotary
I got it on that big auction site for $760. With it being a prototype and the fact that the auction ended just before midnight CST it should have gone for more. I really didnt think I has a chance at this as I placed the bid 4 seconds before it ended. A real find as I have never seen one before. Here is the description from the auction: I am selling off a very extensive model airplane collection for a friend. These are items from a life time of collecting engines. This offering is a very rare, only one of twenty made, OLYMPIC ball bearing rear drum valve glow speed engine. This engine was custom made by Bill Atwood, and given away at the 1960 Dallas Nats. This engine is owned by "Doc" Richard Nichol, who was a young man flying speed at the 1960 Nats. He must have made a good impression upon Bill Atwood, because he gave this engine to Doc to use and fly. Doc said he used it briefly, but newer and faster engines soon surpassed it. He added it to his extensive model engine collection, and it has been there collecting dust ever since. I will leave it to the new owner to clean. A very hard engine to find, and a must have for the Cox engine collector. Please email me with any questions. Item shipped USPS Priority mail. Jason

VA 049 MK1
Any one know what the value of a VA 049 MK1 is worth? I got this in an engine lot a while back. Top of piston has a 5 scribed on it. I believe this is the piston size in relation the the cylinder as they were matched at the factory. The serial number is 495. It is missing the prop spinner. The mounting lugs do not have tool marks but I believe it may have been run in a clamp type test stand or washers were used. The bottom screw has tool marks probably to change the piston timing - neat feature. Super light engine. Looks to have a Globee plug and adapter. Jason

RE: 3 Cyl 049 radial
BMatthews, The supercharger has sealed bearings and also has a tap to pressurise the fuel system. I am going to use a carb off of a OS 12CZR that I have for this engine. It should be large enough to supply this engine and has 2 needle valves. I want to turn a new front and back to eliminate the chance for leakage with the 2 piece front end. There is no need to have that much material there for support. I haveot figure out a way t mount this engine. I may use standoffs that screw into the back plate to a test stand. For the vane pump I believe you could not get by with a hack saw to cut the slits. You would need a slitting saw on a mill and a rotary table. Also what to use for the vane material? Graphite? Teflon? Sintered brass? Plus the extra weight of the pump. The supercharger looks to be built pretty light. The only weak spot I see is the belt breaking. Jason

RE: 3 Cyl 049 radial
I bought some aluminum stock today and am going to make a new front that will save some more weight. I am also going to make a new back cover and it will have a PTO with pully to drive a RB Innovations supercharger. I will use an off the shelf carb and most likely port that in between the cylinders. The output of the supercharger will go directly to the carb intake. The supercharger also has a tap to pressurize the fuel tank. Can't hurt to experiment. Once it starts off the prime the supercharger should be enough to keep it running by forcing air into the carb and pressurizing the crank case. The vane pump looks a little too difficult for my machining experience. What is the vane material made of?? We had a vane vacuum pump on the farm for milking machines. I understand how they work but looks difficult to build. IIRC the precision clearance between the sidewalls of the pump was critical. If the side got scored the pump would be shot. Jason

The engine has 3 compression strokes per revolution. I am uploading more pictures of the insides. even if I don't get it to run it is still a cool engine to mount on a static display. Jason

3 Cyl 049 radial
I bought this on feebay last week. It doesn't run for long and I knew that when I bought it. It is just cool. I know that is lost it's pumping action due to the multi cylinders in the same crank case at different timings. If I add a supercharger to the input do you think it would keep running? RB Innovations makes them for small glow engines. Basically forcing air/fuel mix into the CC should keep it running right? Jason

CP, With my throttle ring Nissan I could run lean if I was easy on the throttle. Yes these cars spent more time on the bench than on the track. I was racing against a bunch of 1/10 scale electric cars since I was the only gas car there. They were eating my exhaust until my axle seperated from a loose set screw[8|] I might thy this throttle on a sure start and see what happens. Jason
