RE: Flaps
Flaps are designed to change the airfoil curve for increased lift on takeoff and landings, not to be air brakes like on a jet. Using anymore than the recommended settings just changes their function from creating lift to creating drag.

Please add me to the roster. I have a TF GS P-40 with a DA-50r almost ready to maiden. Just need to balance and make final check of all systems. I will add pictures later.

I thought they might be used to install fixed gear, if you don't install retracts. Just a guess, I did' not find a use for them.

No problems with the K80. Starts everytime and runs great. More than enough power for the Elan (at least at my altitude - Mississippi is less than 500 ft msl at most points).

On a rear mounted carb, you would have to cut a hole in the firewall which would extend the velosity stack out of the cowl area. Would that not help?

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Goose, thanks for the suggestion. I admit the CG is a little nose heavy. I set it to the manufacturer's recomendation and then added a little weight to be on the safe side. From the CG you use, I am way nose heavy. I will leave the nose gear alone and try moving the CG back to balance on the mains as you and several others have stated works well. Again, I appreciate all the tips and help and (as soon as the rain stops) will let you know how it does.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
Thanks everyone for the tips and suggestions. I would like to get in touch with Alan and ask him what he designed the nose incidence to be. Having no plans with the kit leaves you guessing. Can some of you post the measurement between the ground and the bottom of the fuselage? This would give me a better idea as to whether I am in the right ball park.

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
I checked the specs on the Dreamwork's gear and the nose strut is suppose to be 5.5", which it is. The original shim is actually 3/4" rather the the 1/2" I stated before. I think I will add another 3/4" under the gear and see it that will help it. Has anyone actually put a level on the fuselage to see how much negative their Elan might be? How close to level does it really need to be?

RE: Elan Has Arrived!
I know this has been addressed somewhere in this thread but I can't seem to find it so I'll ask it again ... I am using DreamworksRC Pro-Link landing gear in my Elan. The nose gear seems to be a little short and, although I have added a 1/2" shim under it, I am still about 1 1/2" from being level. The plane seems to take a longer time to get to speed and rotate than other Elans that I have seen. Do most of you fly with negative incidence in the nose? I would like to have it level but adding another 1 1/2" under the gear will just about bring the gear outside of the fuselage.

I was installing my retracts today (Robart #150 as recommended) and found that I had to add a 1/8" shim to the bottom of the landing gear blocks to allow the retracts to fold flat. Has anyone else had to do this?

RE: KingTech K-80
The only difference is that you need to put the "Y" connector in after the fuel pump and run fuel to both the 4mm fuel port and 3mm gas port on the K80. You will need to use a higher volltage battery with kero start. I have found a 9.9 volt A123 to work well. Otherwise, the setup is as the manual shows.

RE: Where is the best place to buy A123 Batteries these days?
Sorry, I stand corrected. An A123 is a type of Lithium Ion battery. I can't, however, after a seaching the internet, find any connection between OlevinPower and A123 Systems except the statement from Hobby King that the OlevinPower battery is made by A123. Hopefully, this is true because the price is right!

RE: Where is the best place to buy A123 Batteries these days?
The new ones are described as "OlevinPower Lithium Ion Single Cell", not the same as A123. A123s are only made by A123 Systems and would be branded as such. Strange that there are made by a different manufacturer but have the same model #. Lithium Ion is old technology. Also the new one shows a 30c rating. A123s are rated at 60c.

Nano tech uses partical size that is less than 100 nanometers. Regular battery chemestry uses matereial that is 5 and 20 micrometers (5000 and 20000 nanometers - over 100 times nanoscale. In batteries, more surface area allows the current to flow out and in more easily. Some will say that LIFE is all we need in our planes.... in a way it is true and certainly depends on application. I have noticed that when recharging A123 as compared to Life that the current flows at 100% on recharge in the A123 until it reaches 100% capacityand then does a short balance if needed (Using Cellpro Chargers) but with LIFE on the same charger the current will flow to 90% and then take some time to come up to 100% and finish off... It is only the difference of maybe less than 10 minutes... but certainly shows how the first battery is working more easily in transferring the stored energy."

I also bought a Dragon WWII P-40 pilot and am in the process of antimating him. I purchased an animatronic kit from Churchill Creations that will allow me to have him wave and look around. The animation is controlled by a small servo controller that can be programmed with the desired movements and then looped. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xQQ7oJd06t8#! RE: TBM Shock Jet
Actually, the ShockJet flies great on a P60-P70 size engine. I have a JetCat P80 in mine and it is a little overkill. You will have to do some cutting to get it to fit. I also have a Kingtech K80F in my Boomerang Elan and it is an excellent engine - most bang for the buck - and I think it will fit the ShockJet with out any modifications.
