RE: G 38 enough to fly a YA Spitfire
I personally would go for a bit more performance than the G38 will give. However, I have NO doubt that the 38 would fly the plane just fine. But for the difference in price I would go for the larger engine, which would help with balance too probably.

RE: help locating retracts for P-51
I doubt the Sierra gear will be a drop in fit. However it would be worth any mods for the dependability of the gear. Darrel makes awesome gear...second to none. You can't go wrong with it. Tower has had the tailwheel in question on backorder since the end of last year.

RE: Ziroli F8F
This is very much like what I did last December. I bought a Ziroli P51 short kit. Next I ordered the plans fron Ziroli, and the cowl, canopy, and the belly scoop. Then I bought the engine, a ZDZ80, and retracts. With the major parts in hand, it was easy to fit and plan things better. The plans will have all the info you need, take time to study them, and fit parts first before using glue. You probably knew that. Anyway, it was my first large build, and I am on a budget, so cost does matter, however I have managed to build it right, or as right as my skill level allows. There's always room for improvement. If I can do it though, pretty much anyone can I think. I found that the plans offer all the info you need to build the basic aircraft, but there is always room for improvements and personalised touches. Scale detailing can take some and can add to the planes apperance...and weight. If you build it, build LIGHT! After all, you do want to fly it. Ziroli probably has an instruction sheet for the assembly process, which will be basic info, no pictures at all. If you have built kits before, you will have no problems with a short kit, and plans. And of course you can learn by reading build threads about the plane you have chosen. Good Luck!

RE: determined not to have a bad day
Absolutely! But you know to get her started with a trainer before you risk the Cub, of course. I think you are lucky to have a spouse who is motivated to learn more about it and support you in your participation. My wife has come a long way in the last few years...she isn't hangin at the field yet (thank goodness), however just when I think she could care less, and hasn't been listening to a thing I've said, she surprises me with a comment about a plane or SOMETHING. It could be worse. At least she respects my property enough not to jack with it. Probably why I've been with her for the last seventeen years.

RE: H9 Spitfire Build
FWIW, my firewall seperated one morning as I was preparing for flight. I put the starter to it and noticed a "bit" of extra play...after some epoxy and glass I have not had a problem. I am glad I caught it. This plane is a good flying plane and I am not ready to part with it just yet. To those building this bird, take some extra effort to reinforce the firwall...better safe than sorry.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
The Robart gear will fit...with mods. The Sierra gear that Darrel offers are by far the best quality, and they are made for this plane. You get what you pay for. Mine operate flawlessly. No leaks, no hassles. Check em out.

RE: New Comp Arf Corsair !
Hmm, I suppose I will be putting this one on my tick list. The folding wing option would be cool. Darrel does awesome work at Sierra.

RE: warbird monokote or fiberglassing
ARF=Monokote...Kit built, scale anything=fiberglass. Monokote has some advantages over glass in some applications, and vice versa. I like glass myself.

RE: Kit Cutters Build vs Mass Produced Kit????
Don''t forget Ziroli either. I am building my first giant scale P51 from plans, and a short kit. It has been very straight forward. I am buiding a set of foam wings for it, but that is the only major deviation from the plans. Meister I hear too has a good flying airplane.

RE: TF 1/5 P-51B First Flight
First of all, GREAT job on the maiden. The plane is a looker. Nicely done. You should be smiling! Isn''t it nice when everything goes as planned...especially when you have the time and effort into it like that. Again, good job, and I hope you get many good flights out of her.

RE: scale functional exhaust for gas engines
For the P51 you can go with a Jtec....do a search for it. It comes in 1/5 and 1/4 scale, and is around $150.00 shipped. It is the way to go I think...not to take anything away from Keleo systems. I hae seen the Jtec units and they are very nice...scale looks. sound great too. [link=http://www.jtecrc.com/scalefunctionalexhausts.htm]Jtecrc[/link] www.jtecrc.com/scalefunctionalexhausts.htm

RE: How Long
A Ziroli Mustang fuselage has taken me going on four months now. I expect the wing will take almost that. Then all the little finishing details....about a year I'd say. Depends on how anxious you get! But who cares just build it straight and have fun with it.

RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
Yep! I saw it there today. It's kind of pricey...but I'm sure it is worth it. I am building a Ziroli Mustang presently, and it will be way less than $9000.00 when it's done. I have used a few ideas from that plane to incorporate for my own. It really is a beautiful aircraft. Quality of build is obviuos when you see it up close and personal. Best of luck to whomever ends up with it.

RE: PAINTING A P-51
I've used Warbird Colors too, and would use them again. Latex base, with a fuel proof clear might be possible too. I have done that with good results. Rattle cans are not going to give you the best results, not like say an airbrush at the very least. An airbrush is servicable, and might be desirable in some cases for the painting process. You could look into Lustrekote spray paint. It is fuel proof. It matches Monokote too.

RE: Elmer's wood glue? Anyone using it?
I've used most all the glues mentioned here, and the one I use the most is either Elmers Wood Glue, or Titebond. Either one applied correctly, on a correctly prepared surface is plenty strong for modeling use. I use whatever the application needs. Epoxy is a go to when strength really matters! Elmers for sure! It doesn't bother my sinuses like CA does.

RE: Can you figure out Hobby Manufactuers ?
I think khodges hit the nail on the head...
I think that's only part of it, and that part helps drive the other part. The mfg's see the popularity of a new release, and they want in on the financial opportunities, too, so they release something of their own, with their version of "improvements" on the other guy's product. It might be a little bigger, more detailed, or cheaper than the other guys' products. Automobile mfg's have done this for years.
It's all about the money!

G26 on mine and it required 8oz. of additional weight in the nose. I have Sierra retracts also. It is perfectly powered with a G26.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
I'm using the stock muffler. My maiden went smooth too. Plane is a great flyer. Little aileron trim was needed, and the G26 pulls it along nicely at half throttle. landing was uneventful, but takeoff did require staying on the rudder. I am pleased with the way this plane flew.

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
When I added my flaps, I put an control horn on the middle flap. The Servo is mounted on the top of the center wing section. The pushrod is also only visible on the top side...the horn sticks up through the wing. Hope that makes sense. The weather is really nice here, and since I have not flown mine yet, I'm heading out to the field right now. I will give my impressions of the first flight here later on tonight. Wish me luck!

RE: CMP 160 sized Texan
I wouldn't do it. The G26 is way more power than this plane needs. As stated, care must be given to properly take off without torque induced roll. The 41 is OVERKILL!

Laser short kits from Alex Guzman, Good or Bad?
Anyone bought short kits from a-mmodels (Alex Guzman) off ebay, and if so how did they build? Any comments on quality good or bad, I would be interested in your experiences. Particularly Ziroli kits.
