RE: The Better HeliPro Black Hawk
Sorry to hear about your crash Gizmo. Glad your CF night blades survived. I had something similar happen to my BH450 a few weeks ago, but was able to get it down without damage. Mine banked hard right, and would not correct when pulling the stick hard left. I pulled back on the throttle and kept adding some rudder and just kept it going in circles till it got close to the ground then hit TH. The servos are screwed only into the CF frame instead of having a bolt screwed into a threaded insert in the frame like some others. After checking mine over I found that the screws were pulling out of the frame on the aileron servo and the servo was loose and about ready to fall off. I fixed mine by attaching the servos using small bolts with nuts on the inside of the frame. I did that to all 3 cyclic servos even though the other two were still tight. Just something you might want to check. Believe me, I have had all kinds of strange things happen to me with my BH450 but I still keep fixing and flying it cause I like it, and it was my first heli. Btw, I have also had several gears split on the SG90 servos too during a minor crash and missed it during the rebuild and it caused some erratic flying. You can't see a damaged gear just by looking through that blue servo case, you have to take the servo apart. If you are still using the stock SG90 servos and need gears you can get gear sets at Ushobbysupply or Helidirect.

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Yeah Scott, I hear ya about the winter wind. It seems like it is always real windy here all winter. Damn cold air blowin down here from Canada, and lots of "lake effect" snow before Lake Erie freezes over. Oh well, as George Carlin used to say, "If ya don't like the weather, MOVE",lol. My wife was born and raised in the hills of eastern Kentucky and still has property there, so, some day soon we might be moving down there. The weather is much nicer than it is here. I think I am gonna hold off buying any new lipos before winter, since I probably won't get to fly too much till about May(sigh). I got 3 pairs of 3300's for the Hurri, but down to only 2 good ones for the BH450. I also need to save up to finish the 425 build, and will need to get some lipos for it when I figure out what size would be best for it. What lipos are you using in your Trex 500? You guys are also makin me wanna get a HH frame too, but now I wouldn't know whether to use it in the 550 or the 425, so, now I would have to get 2 of them so the other Gaui don't get jealous.[&o] My wife would probably throw me and my helis out the door.[:)] Anyhow, good luck with getting the Hurri back in the air, and hope the weather holds out a little longer. On a sad note, it seems that the city has been having a big problem with people dumping trash at the field where I fly, so the city blocked it off to the public. Now I have to try to find a new place to fly within a reasonable distance. There is a huge state park that has some large mowed areas that I could fly at, but it is about 18 miles from my house, where-as the old field was about 1/2 mile away.

RE: DX-7 Radio and servos...
Yeah, like many people, I use the DS 821's on a Hurricane 550 for sport flying, and they hold up well, but I don't think I would run them on anything bigger than that.

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well, I didn't have lots of time to fly today, but I did get to run 3 batteries thru the newly rebuilt BH450, and it flew perfect.[:D] I guess I can quit crashing now since I learned how to repair and set the heli up great from all the previous mishaps.[>:] Only had 1 problem today. The BH was flying so good that I musta got too excited, and on the last flight I forgot to turn my timer on and flew till it lost power. It puffed the lipo real bad. I guess "puffed" would be the wrong term for this one as it swelled about half again its original size. It looked like a 6s brick instead of a 3s,lol. Oh well, it was the first lipo that I bought as a spare when I got the heli so it has had lots of use in the past year. Yeah Scott, I saw the video of Kyle wringing out the 425 with the HH frame. Looked pretty impressive. Guess I would never have to worry about stripping a gear with the HH frame, huh.[:)] I think the weather is a blessing from the Heli Gods. No other reason for it to be 70 degrees here in the middle of November, and not a cloud in the sky. Gonna mow the lawn at least one more time just to mulch up and bag the neighbors leaves that blow in my yard. After that, it will be time to start shoveling snow.[:@]

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Hey Scott, Sorry to hear about your Hyp. motor failure on the 550 in the other forum. Are you gonna use the z-30 in it now. How do you like Ben's frame? Been thinking about getting one, but then, I might have to get 2 or the 425 build will get jealous. On another note. Christina at Ka-Planes sent me all the parts that got damaged in the crash from the new swash plate failure, so I got it rebuilt and gonna take it out for a test flight on Saturday. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend, but, got honey-dew projects on Sunday. Hope it flys as good as it used to before the crash. I had it flying about as perfect as I am probably capable of. As much as I sometimes get frustrated with the BH450, mainly from dumb luck, it was my first heli, so, I just can't seem to keep myself from rebuilding it when it takes an unplanned landing. Oh, and btw Scott, the vids were pretty good. Finless might have some competition in the future.[;)]

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well, it seems that the BH450 will be back in the air soon after all. I emailed Ka-Planes and advised them about the faulty swash plate. Christina emailed me back and asked me to give her a list of all the parts that got damaged from the ensuing crash caused by the swash plate coming apart, so I did. She emailed me back today and told me that she had just shipped out all the parts to me that got damaged in the crash. As soon as they arrive, I should have it back in the air in a few hours. I was hoping that they would replace the swash plate, but it turns out that they went way beyond that. Christina and Ka-Planes are simply the best.

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well, after a complete rebuild, including new swash plate, all new link ends, dampers, spindle shaft, etc. I took the BH450 out to the field today. Spooled it up into a hover and it was perfect. Hovered nearly hands free. Started flying some slow circuits to see how it flew, and about 2min. into the flight, I heard a pop and it came crashing down. Seems the new swash plate was defective and one of the balls pulled out. There were no threads in the hole. Kinda frustrating when a perfect build turns to pieces because of a brand new part failure. I haven't even bothered to check over the damage this time as I am getting tired of rebuilding this thing. Finished out the day with 3 great flights on the Hurri 550 though. At least the Hurricane hasn't let me down yet. Not sure if I will bother to rebuild the BH450 again. Just put $100 worth of new parts on it including new CF blades only to get 2 minutes of flight before a new part failed. I think I will just retire the King 2's and the BH and just fly 1 heli, the Hurricane 550 until I get my Hurri 425 built.

RE: How to hook up Battery 2 x 2200mAh 3S in series?
ORIGINAL: Derek8819 I am looking at buying a 500 size heli and it suggest: Battery: 2 x 2200mAh 3S 20C or 1 4400 6S 20C How exactly would you hook up the 2 3S to one ESC? Thanks!
Looking at the numbers, they don't add up. If you hook 2 x 3s 2200mah in series, you will have a 6s 2200mah. If you hook 2 x 3s in parallel, you will have a 3s by 4400mah. There is no way you can get 4400mah 6s from 2 x 3s 2200mah as you have listed above. ( Quote: or 1 4400 6s 20c ) Something seems wrong with the 2 different battery specs. you have listed. You would have to hook 2 x 3s 4400mah in series to get a 6s 4400mah, or hook 2 x 6s 2200mah in parallel to get 6s 4400mah.

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well, I got my parts today and got the BH450 repaired, sort-of. Since I ordered some spare parts Before the crash, I didn't get an extra set of CF blades so I put a set of woodies on it for now till I get new blades coming. Also, after a previous crash a few months ago that sheared off the motor shaft I been running an 11T pinion on the stock motor. Not sure what came on it though as I never found the broken end of the motor shaft. Today I put a 13T on it during the rebuild because the manual shows that in the parts listing, but that will make the head speed about 2800 to 2900 which might be too high for woodies. When I spooled it up in the basement to check blade tracking, one of the flybar paddles flew off and almost hit me. It is kinda a poor design as the paddles are only held on by a grub screw. Since the flybar is the same diameter and length as my King2, which has threaded ends and paddles, I just used a spare set for the King2 on the BH450. Hopefully the threaded ones don't come off. Anyhow, if it don't rain Thursday I will take it out to the field and give it a test flight. I just hope the woodies can handle the higher head speed. I would really hate to have another crash like I did once before caused by a wood blade breaking out at the root and flying off while in the air..[:@]

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well Scott, I think the frustration was simply because I don't have the parts right now to get the BH450 back in the air. Still didn't get the parts I ordered last Thursday. You know me, I won't let the cold or snow stop me as long as it is not too windy. Just get a little frustrated when I have a crash and don't have the parts to get back in the air. I think I am now gonna order all the electronics to finish the Hurricane 425 build. I like being able to take at least 2 helis to the field, and I have pretty much decided to retire the King2's as they just require too much tinkering to keep in the air. The Bh450 is a nice heli, but seems to be getting too hard to get parts for it. Not enough people carry them and Ka-Planes is always out of stock on the most common parts that get damaged in a crash.

RE: Helipro Blackhawk owners; Past, Present, Future
Well, I guess I jinxed myself. Haven't had a crash in quite a while, which was good since I didn't have any of the 'normal' crash repair parts on hand. Ka-Planes recently restocked the BH450 parts, so, last Thursday I ordered the usual, spare tail boom, main gear, flybar, etc. The place I fly at is 2 practice ball fields side by side, but lots of people use it for other things like practicing hitting golf balls. I usually take off from 2nd base while standing on the infield, but with all the rain lately the infield was muddy so I decided to use the grass area between the 2 fields. I spooled it up, then just as I took off the heli spun outta control and hit the ground hard. I haven't checked all the damage yet, but broke a set of CF blades, stripped a couple servos, bent the flybar, and stripped the main gear. When I picked the heli up I found what looked like fishing line wrapped all around the tail shaft and blades. It was clear so that must be how I missed it when I set the heli down to get ready to fly. Worst part is that my parts did not come yet, and I didn't order any spare CF blades. I have some woodies here but my last crash was do to a wood blade splitting at the root and flying off while in flight. Oh well, winter is coming so maybe I will just quit flying till spring comes.

RE: bought secondhand honeybee. is this movement normal?
The tail servo not working could also be a problem with the gyro as the gyro is what controls the tail servo. Try unplugging the gyro from the receiver and plug the tail servo directly into the receiver then move the rudder stick. If the servo moves, then the gyro is bad.

RE: Honey Bee King v3 RTF or Belt CP v2 RTF
I don't think that you will notice a difference in the way the 2 systems fly, as both are cheap stock Tx's, however, the 72mhz is more prone to glitching from outside interference than a 2.4 ghz. system. I have ordered many parts from USHobbySupply and the service is always top-notch, but the prices for heli kits are usually much higher than others. I am actually thinking of getting a Belt CP V2 for a 'beater' heli to try new things with before trying them with my Blackhawk 450se or my Hurricane 550. Ka-Planes ( where I bought 2 of my helis ) has the Belt CP V2 for $159 in 72mhz and $179 for the 2.4ghz. I am just gonna get the 72mhz and put an AR6100 rx in it and fly it with my DX7. I got a spare Rx out of a crashed King2 to use.

RE: bought secondhand honeybee. is this movement normal?
I have never seen a stock spindle shaft on a King2 break. I have bent my share of them, but, never broke one. The way the blade grip moves ( in the video ) it almost looks as though somebody took it apart and put it back together without putting the bearings back on the shaft. If it is broken you should be able to simply pull on the grips and they will come off the rotor head.
ORIGINAL: Kelownan Jerry, does the longboom and 550 blades make it more stable? and is there a motor upgrade needed or can you go stock. Kel
With the long boom and 550mm blades the Hurri is extremely stable and easy to fly. It pretty much flys right where you want it to go without wandering all over the place. I am using the Stock Gaui 850kv motor with 15/42/20/61 gearing and it has more than enough power for my flying skills. I am also running 2x3s 3300mah lipos in series for a 6s setup. Don't know how that 4s set-up would work as I don't know anybody flying it, but that don't mean it won't as obviously somebody has tried it.

RE: just got a Esky Honey Bee King 2 have Questions,
It is kinda normal for the tail to want to spin a little at low head speeds simply because the tail blades are not spinning fast enough to counteract the torque of the main rotor blades. It is usually worse when taking off from a smooth surface like pavement or concrete, but not as bad when taking off from grass. As far as the ESC, check to see if it has a programmable " soft start ". This is a feature in many ESC's that can be programmed for 'hard', 'soft', or 'super soft' start. If it doesn't you might want to replace it with one that has this feature such as a Hobbywing 30A or something similar.

You may also want to check the spindle/feathering shaft. It is the shaft that goes through the blade grips. It usually gets bent in a blade strike. Take it out and roll it on a nice smooth flat surface to see if it is bent.

RE: servos
I use the towerpro sg 90's on my King2 and also on my Blackhawk 450se. They work pretty well for inexpensive servos with one exception. The gears strip very easy in a crash, however, I kinda look at it as a "fuse" so-to-speak. I have had several crashes that stripped the gears, but never damaged any parts on the head except for an occasional bent spindle shaft. Replacement gear sets are only $2.50 at USHobbySupply, and the servos are only $4.99 each at Value Hobby.

Yes, those will fit on a Hurricane 550, but, I don't know how good they are for that price. I use Spektrum/JR DS821's on the cyclics on my Hurri 550. They are only about $30 each and work pretty well.

ea01bg, sorry to here about the crash with your Hurri. It was this thread, and a suggestion from you and Druss that caused me to buy a Hurri 550 last winter. I have been real happy with mine so far. I still enjoy flying my smaller BH450SE and kinda use it to learn new things before trying them with the Hurri. Due to my budget, it is likely that I will never go any bigger, but someday I would like to get another Hurri 550 and put a scale fuselage on it. My thanks for starting what was a very interesting thread, even after nearly 2 years. Best of luck to you.

RE: The Better HeliPro Black Hawk
Hey Scott, if the field you are talking about is Osage Park, I think, than yeah I like that one too as the field I fly at is surrounded by trees too so it is kinda similar. Another one I like is one I downloaded called 'badoldesloe'. It has trees too, but is a much smaller and narrower field , so, you really have to learn to keep the heli under control due to the more limited flying area. A friend of mine that flies fixed wings has RF G4.5 and he told me that his real models are easier to fly than the same or similar models on the sim, but I don't know about the helis as I have only tried it out a couple times. A lot of people bash Clearview, I guess cause it is cheap, but it has helped me a lot so I can't really complain about it. I just wish it had some of the training features that the higher end sims have. If and when I might ever become a decent pilot, I might get Phoenix basically cause I have heard many good comments about it.

Hey Scott, glad you got it figured out. I have been in bed sick for the last 3 days, so nothing going on here at all. Have you downloaded any of the other flying fields for the Clearview sim yet? There are some pretty nice ones. The strange thing is, with some of them, when you go to select a flying site, it doesn't show the pic of the sight like the others do. Not sure why that happens, but they will still work, it just don't show the site in the preview pic.
