RE: Is this a good field box set?
P.S. Just how dangerous are lead acid batteries and what precautions should I take? I've done a fair bit of environmental chesmitry for exams recently, and it had scary stuff about lead and its health effects- going from stomach burns to cancer.
My cars, motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers, farm equipment and model starters have used lead-acid batteries all my life and I have never had any accident with them. With a bit of effort, however it would be possible to get an acid burn or even a hydrogen explosion. jess

RE: shootin talk
ORIGINAL: cumquat power and speed arent issues, just noise.
If you don't mind the price and the wait (six months or so) for the BATF paperwork you might investigate a suppressor. A good one on a bolt action rifle with subsonic ammunition makes less noise than closing a car door. On a semi auto the action makes more noise than the firing of the cartridge. I will admit that if I hadn't tried it I would not have believed how quiet they can be. My Feinwerkbau air pistol makes more noise. (And costs much more). jess

RE: shootin talk
ORIGINAL: cumquat anyone try that CCI quiet .22 round yet? i'm interested in it but i'd have to buy it online because no one around here stocks it, so i cant just buy a 50 round box to try. also, got any suggestions for other .22 rounds to try? might as well throw in some other ammo when i order, save on shipping.
I have a couple of 500 round bricks if these but have fired only a couple of boxes. They seem fine so far as to function and accuracy. I have not chronographed any of them. I am a big fan of subsonic .22s (they used to be called "standard velocity". As a general rule they provide better accuracy than high velocity and are less erratic in cross winds. Of course the Gold Standard for accuracy for decades has been Elley Match. (Also Gold Standard for price[:o]) BTW, My son knows a control hunter who has killed over 70 deer using subsonic .22s from a suppressed bolt action rifle. None have required more than a single round. jess

RE: How do we get the word out?
I think the AMA is an excellent organization and encourage modelers to join. OTOH I don't think membership in any organization should be required for enjoyment of an activity, such as being required to join Trout Unlimited to fish, Ducks Unlimited to hunt, SCCA to drive a Porsche, etc. Clubs, naturally should be free to set their own requirements for activities conducted on their property or under their sponsorship, If for example a shooting range requires NRA membership, or a motorcycle club requires AMA (the other one) membership that is a different situation from engaging in those activities privately. jess
ORIGINAL: hsukaria Somebody here could comment on what the impact to the oil content requirement would be if a glow engine had roller bearing connecting rods like gassers do. That is another detractor to glow engines, people complaining about the amount of slimey oil in the glow fuel. If a glow engine had roller (pin) bearings on the connecting rods, how low of an oil content could a glow engine run on? Near a highway, railway, shooting range, race track, airport, factory, lawn being mowed, parking lot being blown off, or any of the dozens of other sources of noise greater than a model airplane engine. OTOH, during the few decades I had neighbors, none complained about the noise of my model engines. Come to think of it they didn't complain about my noisy hobbies either. jess

Good point about the mufflers, Earl. I still view them as something of an annoyance, while OTOH, I have come to view supressors for firearms as both a hearing protection and relief of annoyance for neighbors, yet we must have an expensive federal losence to own one. Go figure. jess

RE: Maximum altitude??
ORIGINAL: gaRCfield I don't know enough yet to really add scientific/engineering input, but I do know that some of the highest flying full-scale airplanes out there have very long, very skinny wings.
True,, but also true that there are reynolds number problems when going from large to small. That being said, how many reading this thread have seen a current generation F3C freeflight model using a folding wing to go from low aspect ratio for a 450-500 foot climb in 5 seconds to a high aspect ratio for a sailplane-like glide? Not sure how/if that approach could be applied to the project under discussion, but those models are sure impressive to watch, and the restrictions on power/engine run vs duration provide food or thought. jess

I attach my test stands to a work table similar to the workmate, but it has a hinged work surface so I can rotate the engine to vertical while it is running. When I have done this provedure using the same tank and possitioning as I use in the plane I have never had an engine perform differently in the plane than on the bench. jess

Very interesting thread. Some innovative approaches. I enjoy engines as much as, if not more than tha planes. As a result I have several stands, some home made and some purchased. I also keep on hand a bit of methanol, nitro methane, castor and synthetic so I can mix a small batch of fuel appropriate for whatever falls into my clutches. jess
