RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
There is a Bridi (Kitty Hawk) Shrike in the market place right now for anyone that wants it. http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=564079 This looks just like the kit I sold.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
I don't know about any calculator for figuring it out, but I plan on using Hitec 5645's on 6V for 164.2oz of torque on the elevators and rudder. I will use less powerful digitals on the ailerons, and analog standard servos on the rest.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
That is quite a story maxiemac! I did have the pleasure of seeing Bob Hoover perform once when I was a kid. It was amazing! I have also read his book "Forever Flying". It is an amazing book that is well worth the read. I will definitely show the control linkages when I get to them. I am going to deviate from the plans some here and relocate the servos, and use two elevator servos for redundancy. That will probably be a little while though.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
I finished installing the trailing edge sheeting on the left inboard wing section and mounted nacelle former 8 and the wheel well tonight. I think it is really coming along. It is starting to take that "Turbo Commander" look. I will have to be really careful now so I don't get ahead of myself because there is so much that goes into the nacelles, and I don't want to sheet over something, or build myself into a corner with it. I probably won't even put the stringers on it until it is hard mounted to the fuselage. Here are a few pics of tonight.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
That is good to hear! I was a bit nervous about the wing joiner setup, but I think it will be ok. I am going to modify it a bit and put a screw going inward from the outboard wing section into the inboard section kind of like a wing tube setup. I would just feel better with it like that.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
I haven't posted a reply in a few days, but I have been working on it. A couple of days ago, I finished my outer wing joiner system. It came out OK. Tonight was a big night however! I finished installing my load bearing bulkheads in the nacelle and cut my landing gear mount rails. It fits perfectly! There is absolutely no room for error here. As you can see in the picture, there is about 1/10 of an inch on the inside of the axel and the tire with the gear retracted. The rails are not permenantly mounted yet, but they will be soon. This is a big relief because as I have said before, this entire nacelle design was done with pencil and paper.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Thanks. I have called robart about their gear set for it, and they said they do not make it anymore. I have already gotten my gear and wheels though. What I have will work fine. Hopefully soon I will get to mount the gear.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
I started the nacelle tonight! This was the part of the build that I worried about the most because I had nothing to build on. I completely had to start over again and redesign the nacelle and mate it to the wing and include all the hardware and landing gear while still making it look good and only using a pencil, ruler, protracter and factory drawings. Well, I think it is going pretty well. As far as I can tell, everything is right on the money. Now I can install the inside wing joiner section, and my outer wing panel will be mated with my inner wing panel. Then I can finish my nacelle formers and mount the landing gear. That is the moment I have been waiting for.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
No problem. I love the look of your gear and wheels. I have had to piece mine together and hope they work because Robart has stopped making the sets. Extending the fuselage was very easy for my mod. I simply had more of the formers made and then added them in on the plans to make the length I needed. Maybe you could make a 685! Bob Hoover did put on a great show. I had the privelage of seeing him once before he stopped flying. You should definitely give the Palmer kit a try. It is a pretty fun kit to build. I have never seen a Turbo Commander doing aerobatics, but I have flown in one on many occasions and I am sure it could do some simple aerobatics. I just like the long sleek lines of the fuselage and nacelles on the Turbos. Good luck with your build if you start it, and feel free to post any progress you have here.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Thanks for your compliments, but unfortunately I do not have the Shrike kit anymore. You can occasionally find one on here or ebay if you want to keep looking though (that is where I bought mine), or there is a smaller and somewhat new one on the market also from Top Notch Kits. It would be perfect for a couple of electrics and you wouldn't have to worry about losing an engine. There is also some build info on it over on RCGroups. Here is a link to it. http://www.topnotchkits.com/index_files/TN_Kit6.htm

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Here are a few progress pictures. I have the 1/64 sheeting on top of the cabin now, and the balsa on the rear section. I have also framed my baggage door. It is just taped in place for now, but there are actual door hinges behind it already installed. I also included one of my nosegear door expirament. I am going to take the fuselage off of the building board now and work on the wings some more.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Thanks for the info. I think I will be able to fit them in using 3 separate batteries. I would not be able to fit a 9s pack though. The scale sound is one of the reasons I chose electrics. I have been thinking about getting a turboprop sound generator for it also. They are relatively cheap, and the company I am looking at using will custom make one for your specific aircraft. Plus they sound really good. I also thougt about dead cells with this setup. If I have a cell fail, I only have to replace 1 cheap pack versus replacing the entire very expensive 9s pack. Good luck finding some motors, and hopefully you can get it into the air again soon.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Yeah, I had been warned about the tail heavy tendecies with this kit but I don't think I will have to many problems with it because my fueslage in front of the wing is so much longer. So you are going back to gas huh? When you did have it on electrics were you running multiple packs in series? I am hoping to use 3 3s packs in series instead of one 9s, and I was wondering how that worked. I definitely understand about having to many airplanes and not enough time. I am just finishing an Ohio R/C 27% Extra 300. Good luck with your Fairchild.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Thanks. I will put a hatch on the top and bottom of the aft fuse section. I am moving my servos from the back to the front of that section also, so the top hatch will also provide access to them. I never noticed that it was a modified color scheme, but now that I think about it yours does look even better than the original. Have you been flying it any lately?

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
I finally finished reforming the rear bulkheads on the forward fuselage section and replaced all the stringers. It looks soooooo much better now. I have also started putting some sheeting on it. It is really coming along now! I don't know how much sheeting I will do right now. The main goal with it was to strengthen that area of the fuselage. I will also sheet where the wing will meet the fuselage so I can install the center wing section. I have also been working on the nose gear doors some. The plans really leave these up to your imagination, so I am just experimenting right now.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Leo, That is what I thought you meant. I do really like the landing gear. I have the lower legs painted now and they look even better. I still love the look of your airplane overall. One of the best I have seen. Joe, My Commander will be slightly larger than Leo's, but it is basically the same. I am modifying the same kit he has into a Jetprop version. I added 3.5" to the center wing section to make the wingspan 120.5, and around 10" to the fuselage to make it around 98" long. This airplane probably flies easily, but there is a definite steep learning curve to build it. With that said however, the last kit I built before this one was a GP Ultimate Biplane, so it can't be that bad.

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Thanks for your suggestion. Do you mean fiberglassing the inside of the skin where it meets the former on the joint bulkhead and also on the bulkhead in front of it? That is a good idea. I also added a sheer web type addition to the top and bottom keels on the forward and aft fuse sections between the joint former and the next one each way. They aren't in the pics though. I will post some more soon. I also have finished reshaping the forward fuse section formers and have actually began skinning it some to stiffen it up. It is looking really good.

RE: Palmer 132
Roger, That is looking awesome! I love the skiis. Are they permanent, or can you take them off and retract the gear? I am currently working through a Palmer Plans Shrike Commander, and I can only hope it comes out looking as nice as your C-130. Did you have any trouble with parts fitting? I am having to completely reshape most of my formers to get the correct curves and make straight fuselage sides. I have extended mine also and am converting to a Turbine Commander. I will be watching your progress. Are you going to do panel lines and rivets?

RE: Twin Turbo Commander 1000 setup
Back on the Commander! The weather is starting to turn sour here, so I have put up all my flyers and got out the Commander again. I got quite a bit done yesterday, but only have a couple of pictures. I never could get the fuselage joining system to work as it was drawn on the plans, so I just did it another way. On the plans it calls for 4 copper tubes sticking out of the rear fuse section to slide completely through 4 copper tubes in the forward fuselage section, and then they are held together by a nylon bolt. Therefor the load is carried by the copper tubes and the bolt is to just hold them together. Well, I went the opposite way and made 4 alignment dowls that stick out of the rear section and just slide into some holes in the forward section. Then I used 4 metal bolts, large washers, and blind nuts to hold it together. Now the load is carried by the bolts. It should be plenty strong enough. I also had to completely reshape all of the formers from the wing aft. None of them lined up correctly. I had to fill some of them out to 3/16 of an inch to get the correct curves. Then once I was finished reshaping them, I had to cut all the old stringers out one by one, cut new notches, and restringer the entire rear half of the forward fuselage. It took quite a while, and I only got the left half done last night. It does look much better now though. Here are a couple of pictures of my fuse joining system.

RE: Palmer 132
Upon closer inspection of your second two pics, it is a bit more of a problem, but it still should be easy. I would just fill out the former to the correct outline, then one by one replace the stringers that are now out with the correct outline. Same principle as stated earlier, just all the way around.

RE: Palmer 132
That should be easy to fix. You just have to fillet the dorsal stringer, then blend into the formers (if you have to). Should only take a few minutes. I had to do the same thing with my Palmer Commander.

Ohio R/C 87" Extra 300 Refurbishment
I was given an Ohio R/C Extra a while ago in need of some TLC. Well, I have the airplane mostly done and I was hoping to talk to some people who have one or have had one in the past. I would like to know overall flight characteristics and bad habits (if any). So far, I have completely stripped the airframe and disassembled the tailfeathers and control surfaces. I built new elevators from scratch, and cut a lot of extra wood out of the fuselage and canopy housing. I have completed the recover. I changed the landing gear to Graphtech carbon fiber, and added a set of their wheel pants also. I have purchased and installed an engine. I am currently cleaning and recutting the canopy and installing it. I have a new cowling on order from Fiberglass Specialties. All in all, I think it is turning out nice. Here are a couple of pics of how it was when I got it, and a little of the rebuild. I will post some more when I have more time.

Another very small update on the Commander. I haven't been doing any building during the summer, but I am still gathering parts for it. I finally recieved the lower halves of my gear legs today! I assembled on and put the wheel on it. It think they are going to look awesome on the airplane. I am still not convinced I like the wheels, but they will work for now. There is another set I am going to ge and try on it. Thats all for now. Have you done any building on yours yet Dale?
