RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
ORIGINAL: sidgates I am a the point of test fitting the carbon spars in the horizontal stabs. None would go in properly and examination shows a blue ''gunk'' in each hole in the stab partially blocking the spar hole. At first I thought it was a blue tube that was missaligned but closer look shows that it is just a blob of blue gunk. Consistancy is like hot glue. I took hold of one chunk with needle nose pliers but a hard pull did not dislodge it. I will try to grind it out next. Anyone else seen this and have a better solution.
Mine have blue tubes, I wonder if yours was long, and in cutting it off they melted the end? Greg

RE: Home made UAT tank
ORIGINAL: FenderBean I have been looking for someone to show this myself, guess I will just make one myself and see how it goes. I bought the same paper filters that my MAP hi flow UAT has from Autozone. I have read the small baby bottles are what people use or you can get the small plastic bottles from mcmasters
What I have been using for 10 years is a 2-ounce Sullivan tank, with an aftermarket metal cap. The filter is an automotive fuel filter, with the rubber gasket on the end removed and a washer (with a brass tube soldered to it) is JBWelded to it. The cap /brass tube need to be aligned, since the holes are not in the center. Two additional brass tubes are fitted, flush with the bottom of the rubber stopper - #1 for filling and # 2 for vent. Simple, inexpensive and most importantly ... they work! Greg

RE: (Blackburn) Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer
ORIGINAL: smchale Cool Bob. Will be a very interested in seeing it progress. I think the aircraft would make a very unique and rare scale model. Also lots of opportunity for surface detail that could really make a nice project. Youve drawn in electric fans, I'm not sure that it has enough exit dia/area to pull that off, do you? I think this needs a pair of smaller turbines.
Actually, I think this plane SCREAMS edf. The size of the intakes are huge, and a fairly straight run to the exhaust. "Artistic license" can certainly be taken on exhaust diameter ... but not much is needed, me thinks. A twin turbine certainly can be much larger and impressive ... not to mention, loaded with all the scale goodies ... but at a much greater size and cost. Either way, it will be ([:)]) a cool future project ...... Greg (just what I need, another project....)

RE: Making a one-off custom tank
I've done several, and always used plain old fiberglass. In an impact, the kevlar bursts just as easy as glass does... I make a one piece blue/pink-foam plug, make sure your corners are rounded. I make it 3/1 to 1" longer than I need, so that it can be cut into two pieces. Cut the plug into two, 1/8-3/16" longer than you want the big part to be. I wrap several layers of masking tape around the cut end of the short piece to make an offset for a flange. I cover the whole thing in SolarTex, which is a really low heat film, then wax and PVA the plugs. lay up the glass (I use a layer of 2-ounce, then a layer of 6 and another layer of 2 ounce - just because that has worked for me before). When cured overnight, I take a VERY thin spatula (ask your dentist for a CoeSoft mixing spatula) and get the lip open, then put several drops of water in the open area and pop up the sides. If it won't slide off, I use a football filling needle on my compressor, give a squirt and make sure that you catch the plug before it flies across the room. I like to use BVM's fittings. A trick told to me is to then wash and acetone the inside of the tank, then flow fresh epoxy around the inside to fill pinholes that will happen in the corners (I also do the outside) then trim and assemble the two parts of the tank with Hysol or Aeropoxy. Make sure you pressure/leak test! This has worked for me, and gives a plug for future use/ screw-ups. Greg

RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
ORIGINAL: kimhey I understood the joke the first time, so no offence taken[;)] Hopefully all the rest of us here did the same. On a side note, maybe more of us should fly more Grandma-ish....I do that with my C-arf Mig-15, and it sure looks much more scale. BTW, I have so many flights on my F86d, that I have lost count. I guess 60-70 flights is about right, and the Dog performs beautifully. I have room for 3 -4 jets in my van, and the Dog is always brought to the field, as a ''reserve'' model. Funny thing is....you guessed it?...The F86d usually gets most flights every time[:D] There is one thing I would like to point out. Be careful with your elevator throws! I personally think those stated in the manual are too agressive. If the F-16 that Modellbau is working on flies like the Dog, it will sell like hot cakes. If they need a Beta tester.... I am ready:)) Kim
Ditto on the throttle settings and throws. With reduced throws and throttle setting, it is a sweet flyer ... and with the go stick in the forward position, it goes up like a home sick angel. Greg an old-lady flyer [:)])

RE: 80-100N Turbine Comparison - by the numbers
ORIGINAL: diy-pro  Hmmm lets see how well this goes. What are the componets needed to get one of these running(the turbine...) and what kind of fuel do they use? And do they make ones with extended shafts?
First you need a super entabulator which then negates the need for an extended shaft by the use of thermal negatrons which consume flurtite fluid which then makes everything go round. WHY numerous firefighters and police were not incinerated when the fireball blew over their vehicles (at 65 mph) Tuesday night gives us an idea of how fast that thing moved. The bad news is that 346 families lost their homes. Greg

RE: JR 370a Gyro on nose wheel with Futaba 12Z?
ORIGINAL: sskianpour Dale, Stabilators = 2 Channels Ailerons = 2 Flaps = 2 Rudders = 1 (JR Matchbox) Throttle = 1 Brakes = 1 Retracts & Doors = 1 Air Speed Brake= 1 Nose Steering = 1 That's 12 Total I have 14 Channels (technically on the 12Z, but it's really 12 + 2...the last 2 are NON-proportional so they are On/Off and that doesn't work with the bit of mixing that is needed that you and John described before. I suppose I could ''Y'' the Air Speed Brake Servo to the ''Gain'' Connector on the Gyro and work a mix in with my Air Speed Brake where my Speed-Brake is a slave to Main Channel, and Main Channel is dedicated to Gain. l could put them both on a 3 position switch and assign different mixes to them with position 3 being the ONLY ''ON'' for speed-brake (and set a Condition like: Brakes have to be at max throw for Air Brake to initiate - Remember it's an F15... Air brakes really unnecessary and frankly optional). Then I could make my primary control for that Channel be Gyro Gain Connector and set Gain to mimic Speed-Brake at max brakes and be at it's most sensitive and be OFF or least sensitive when In position 1, with Air Speed Brake not-deployed... I don't know, just thinking out loud... Shaz
Shaz, you are already using a Matchbox, just get another to put on your speed brake for end-point adjustment on one of the +2 channels. (unless you are using a slider for infinite open/close amounts). Greg

RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
ORIGINAL: essyou35 Another question!  I did a taxi test yesterday, the winds were strong, say 20-30 mph.  I only put a little fuel into it, but on the ground I could not control it. It kept weather veining into the wind.  When I would get it to steer into the cross wind, the front tire would start skidding when I turned and the jet would turn back into the wind. A lot of time when I would turn, the jet would just start bouncing on the front tire like it was skipping, and not actually turn... My CG is no more than 30 CM back form leading edge, probably closer to 28-29.  I've never had this issue with a jet, all my bigger EDF shrug the wind right off. I know one rear tires has more resistance than the other, but didnt think it was that much. Does this sound tail heavy or is this to be expected in high winds? I'll recheck CG and try again in lower winds.  BTW brakes worked well, I was shocked that at idle thrust the jet gets moving fast.
My CG is right at the front of the rear spar, so check that, but, yes the nose can get very light in that strong of a cross wind. Greg

RE: Brake trouble
ORIGINAL: essyou35 Hello, I have a set of spring air retracts and brakes.  the are the ''red series'' that are sold for soem of the Modelbau products.  I have a UP6 and I confirmed it is working properly by hooking a air pressure guage.  I have 100 PSI pumped in, and the guage will read 100 PSI when fully applied. I am new to turbines so maybe I dont understand how these brakes work. The right tire, with no air pressure, has a lot of resistance to motion.  The left tire has some resistance but only about half as much.  When I apply brakes, the right tire is hard to turn by hand, but it will turn.  The left tire still has less resistance than the right tire has without brakes and barely has any additional resistance with brakes applied.  I have a T coming off a tank, and robart air disonncects.  I have tired lubing them with vasoline (told it wont hurt the oring), but it has not changed anything.  I slighted sanded on the tight wheel and got it loosened up just slightly, but not even close to the left wheel,\ I guess my questions are this: Are the tires suppose to be able to be turned by hand with brakes fully applied? When brakes are not applied,  should the wheels be able to freely spin? Thanks!
Unless you have replaced your brakes bands, they are swollen from the Vaseline you applied, and will bind tight. Many threads on the proper lubrication of wheels and brakes in this forum, but regardless, the wheels should spin free if lubed correctly, and when brakes applied should turn with heavy pressure by hand. You do not want them to bind tight, you WILL flat spot your tires, and what Clay says it oh-so true.... Greg

RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
ORIGINAL: Modellbau USA  I think something is wrong with your setup. The flight conditions you are describing do not seem right. This airplane gets extremely stable with crow more so than when at flight speed. And with crow it wants to slow down big time you actually need a bit of power to land. I would recheck your CG make it as per manual and also you flap deflection. If Greg would chime in and share his thoughts it would help. I think he is the only person here that has close to the number of flights I have on the Dog.  Agian guys please do not change the holes on the stabs they are set right. If you do flight characteristics will change I garuentee. I know some of you would like to reinvent the wheel but we have flight tested this plane and crashed many trying out different CG, incidents and wing airfoils. Agian I can't tell you what to do with your money but I do not reccomened changing any stab settings.
Just got back from Austin, TX and the Central Texas event. And yes she flew and flew [:)] (7 flights the first two days, flights 41-47) First: I don't work for Henry, and if he patted me on my shoulder I wouldn't know who he was. Second: I am primarily a scratch builder, and an inveterate kit basher... I know the way *I* like to do things...... Third: The first one I built was built as a review airplane for Model Aviation, so it needed to be built 100% according to the plans (it's a review, not a kit-bash article!) That being said......I have built two, and had my hands in two others. Both of mine had the stabs AS DRILLED, with the wings set flush with the bottoms. With my CG approximately 1/8-inch behind the recommended CG (personal preference) I fly 1 click of "up" elevator up here at 7000 feet, and 3 clicks of down at near sea-level. With 43mm of flaps, she slows down very nicely, BUT it can take time if you deploy at too high of a throttle setting, or wait until short final to drop them.......JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER AIRPLANE. With the recommended crow set up (though I only have 43mm of flap) I need three clicks of throttle all the way to touch down. If you get her too slow on short final, she will raise her nose and you will become a Kangaroo. When slow, the crow setting (with the tanks) REALLY stabilizes mine, the only thing mine doesn't like is a hard cross wind (and some of that could be my mind set) All that being said, I have to agree with Henry's comment: "Agian I can't tell you what to do with your money but I do not reccomened changing any stab settings" I do know I've seen the wheel reinvented with some of the posts here, and since I have actually flown two of them, I'd de-rate the control throws (too fast for scale) and that is about it. Build it as written in the instructions, go fly and THEN modify to taste. Henry has done a REALLY GOOD job bringing a model to teh market that works as advertised. If you want to complicate things (I frequently do [&:] ) that is your prerogative, but PLEASE don't claim omniscience! Greg
