RE: Maybe it's a sign that I'm just getting old...
I think that it is a sign of getting old. I started flying R/c in 1960 with a deBolt Rebel. It was a steep learning curve back then because you had to build your own aircraft, learn to trim it to fly right, learn to make radio installations, etc. I still remember the fright that came with launching a single channel to check the glide before the first power flight. It was hard to run and launch a couple of months work when you weren't certain that the incidence, CG, etc was going to work. On the other hand I still remember hearing the ratcheting of the escapement when coming in dead stick after a successful flight. Since that time I have flown almost every kind of R/C big and small and while enjoyable it still doesn't compare. Or maybe it's a sign that I'm just getting old...[:)] Jamesf

RE: Help! Looking for info for Monarch Model Aircraft Co. Inc.
Hi, My memory of Monarch is pretty dim but I do remember them. They were pretty big on carved fuse kits for control line and even had a carved fuse kit free flight. I think that the wings for the free flight were solid balsa also. They are from the 40's and 50's I believe. jamesf

RE: INFO ON CASHBURN'S LUCKYFLY
Hi, I just picked up a Cashburn Cap 21 kit. From the descriptions that I have been reading on this thread It is very similar to the lucky fly the fuse is partly assembled and the wing is balsa covered. I am a little concerned about the wings. I wonder what he used to glue the balsa to the foam and if it is still stuck? Nice kit, well thought out. Jamesf

RE: Re-living a past life?
Hi again, In reading my previous post describing an old deBolt kit, it was a LiveWire Yankee that deBolt released in 1962, not a Rebel. The Rebel was a cleaned up and lightened version of the LiveWire trainer at about the same size. It might also make a good flier for the 09 if kept light. The Rebel was my first successful R/C model back in 1960. It flew with single channel radio with an escapement driven rudder. Was powered by a Fox .15. sorry for the mistake.[:(] James Fuller

RE: Re-living a past life?
Hi, I too am uncomfortable with the direction that our hobby has gone. If someone had asked what my hobby was my response would probably been flying R/C airplanes. Turns our that my hobby is actually building and then flying model airplanes. Not only have kits vanished from the market all of the accessories for scratch building are going the same way. Things like canopies, landing gear, and so on. None of that is the fault of the manufacturers as they are responding to demand. Searching will show that there is a growing segment of old time kit cutters out there, so there must be some demand for kits yet. The LiveWire Trainer is, as HighPlains suggested, a very good .09 sized craft. It was originally flown with a Mills .08 diesel. It needs to be built light to fly well on an .09 engine. deBolt also kitted the LiveWire Rebel in about 1962. It is a somewhat smaller model with a 42" wingspan that shows a K&B .09 on the plans. What is your Ebay account name? I am always interested in older kits. James Fuller

Aluminum landing gear
HI, I am looking for a place to buy aluminum landing gear like the ones used on the old high wing planes made by deBolt, Midwest, etc. Have all the suppliers gone out of business? Anyone have any they would like to get rid of? Thanks, James Fuller

RE: Ace Commander Receiver History
Hi Jay I just ran across and bought what I think is the original Commander RX kit on feebay. I built one in 1959. It is a single hard tube receiver that uses an SPDT relay. the battery complement was a 1.5 volt "A" battery and a 45 volt "B" battery. batteries for the escapement or actuator were in addition to those. The one I built had almost no range, but the builder (me) didn't know much about electronics so that might have been the problem. I built the Commander single tube transmitter at the same time. Ace used the Commander name for several iterations of single channel equipment. Around 1985 or 1986 I bought one of the last single channel transmitters and receivers that they had left to sell. A friend modified the receiver for me so that I could use it on an escapement and I flew it with some success then. Lots of the guys in the club had never seen and escapement work before. Jamesf

RE: Babcock R/C history
Hi, The one that I had was a Babcock. I live in NM and was very familiar with F&M equipment. Frank never marketed an analog proportional set. He was one of the first, if not the first to market a digital system. Mine was in a Citizen-Ship red colored box. It flew well until the first accident. If you damaged the servo case it would no longer work reliably. Reason was that the output arm was slotted on both sides. the slots fit into the aluminum servo case, and that provided their bearings. A very poor design. As with all analogs the servo's were slow compared with the digital sets. I am a collector of old radio sets and I wish that I had it back! I don't believe that I have ever seen the Babcock 3=1 come up on ebay, but the reed sets and the proportional sets show up quite often. BTW, I recently bought a Babcock single channel transistorized tone transmitter off ebay. Very small, about a 6 x 3" and perhaps 2" thick. It looked brand new when I got it. I put a 9 volt battery in it and set it next to a broadcast band radio. Sure enough I found a spot on the dial where where you could hear the tone as you keyed the transmitter. James Fuller

RE: Babcock R/C history
Hi, Babcock did manufacture reed systems and sold a lot of them. They also made proportional systems. My first proportional was an anolog system made by Babcock. It had two sticks, elevator left and rudder or aileron on the right. There was a reed type switch for positionable motor control above the elevator stick. They made digital proportional systems after that. James Fuller

RE: Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
Hi, Jim's assessment appears to be correct. I would caution that if you do run it as a glow to be sure to use a fuel with Castor oil as a lubricant. The old O&R will not last long on current fuels. I believe that Fox still makes fuel with 100% castor. Others may as well. Good luck with your find. James Fuller

RE: 88" Flybaby bipe
Hi, Nice find. I would recover with monocote. Not for the weight savings, but because it will give you a chance to look at the visible glue joints which will give you an idea if it will hold up to flying again. Some glues/cements get brittle and loose a lot of strength. Just my two bits. James Fuller

RE: Greatplanes Cap 21
Hi, I had one in the late 90's that I flew quite a bit. I don't recall what it weighed, but it was heavy. It flew all right for its weight. It was very easy to snap roll and did tumbles more easily t han any plane that I ever flew. It landed easily and did not try to snap on landing.I would try to keep it as light as possisble. Mine had f/g cloth and epoxy resin finished wings and tail tail feathers. I had a Brison 3.2 in mine and it was not overpowered. I am not sure that the g38 is enough engine for it. James

RE: Some early digital proportional history
Hi, Easy for me since I live in NM and F&M was made in Albuquerque. CG equipment was named after Frank Hoover's son, CG Hoover. I knew CG but I never did know what the initials stood for. The company's name changed to F&M around 1960. That stood for Frank & Molly. James Fuller

RE: Is dope & fabric covering dead?
Hi, I used to love aero gloss dope back in the day. Aero Gloss changed their formula 15 or so years ago, and now it is not dope. It is acrylic paint. As several have suggested, I buy Certified Coatings dope from Aircraft Spruce. It is a really good product and is fuel proof at least up to 15%. It is not as expensive as Randolph but is as good as far as I can see. If you are contemplating your first silk'n'dope job be sure that the balsa underneath is completely sealed before putting the silk on. I usually put on 4 or 5 coats thinned about 75%. Be sure that everything that will touch the covering is sealed. I also sand between each coat, making sure to blow or wipe off the wood before the next coat. I don't have anything against plastic coverings. For me it is just more fun to silk and dope. James Fuller

RE: Milt Boone/Ambroid Charger
Hi, I remember building the charger from plans shortly after the magazine article was published. Thought that it was the most beautiful plane ever published. Painted it yellow and black in the original color scheme. I used a babcock compound escapement for rudder and a Bonner SN escapement for two speed motor control. What's funny to me is that I can remember the plane in my workshop, and remember looking down into the fuse while setting up the motor escapement as clearly as if it were yesterday. I have no memory at all of flying it. I have two of the kits in my collection. and I might build one again. I'm trying to build a Kraft single channel tube type transmitter. I have several receivers of various brands and some NIB escapements as well. If the Tx. works out I'll give it a go. James Fuller
