RE: 28th Roadrunner Pattern Classic
The 28th edition of the Roadrunner Pattern Classic is complete. We managed to get in 6 rounds in two days and finish by 11 AM on Sunday despite rather challenging conditions. While we have both a north-south and an east-west runway the wind, as always, had a mind of its own and liked to split the runways and come on strong. We quit early on Saturday when the wind started picking up the desert. WE had 14 contestants split fairly evenly across 4 classes with no FAI contestants. There was a lot of excellent flying being done in the wind. Alan Schiaffino has improved a lot since I saw him fly in his first Advanced contest in Phoenix this winter. If he keeps up this rate of improvement, I expect to see him doing well in Masters next year. Ricardo Arcibar was flying a Sequence in the windy conditions over the weekend and ended up with a well earned third place. The contest would not have been possible without excellent support from non-competing members of the Rocky Mountain Flying Machine. Of course those members competing(four) also contributed in large ways. Jeff Worsham spent a lot of time doing the photography, as seen above and a lot more, in addtion to bringing home a first place in Sportsman. A lot of practice does pay off. Results are attached. They are also available on Don Ramsey's website and the NSRCA website. Also attached is the artwork on the tshirts that were included with registration. And a big thank you to all the out of town pilots who showed up in Albuquerque to compete this weekend. We even had a contestant come in from Chicago to join us. John Gayer CD

I don't understand how you plugged it in wrong then. Are you using a receiver that you can plug a servo connector into either way around?

RE: futaba 9252
Might as well send it in for repair. The 9252 specifically and some(all?) other Futaba digital servos cannot be plugged in backwards without blowing the input circuit. Usually happens when you use multiple universal extensions on ailerons. If you use Futaba J extensions it cannot happen. Otherwise use acrylic paint to put colored dots on the correct side of the male/female connectors you commonly plug and unplug each flying session. The colored dots have the dual purpose of identifying the correct mating connectors and the polarity. Don't ask why I had to figure this out. John

RE: Foam wing help
I suggest cutting the foam blank according to the desired overall planform and then drawing a centerline all the way around the perimeter. Then cut the blank into three pieces- trialing edge full span plus an inboard and outboard leading edge blanks and add the centerlines. Then hotwire all three blanks to desired airfoil. You can then easily include a spar between leading and trailing sections and probably should as you have lost the integrity of the LE and some of the sheeting across the airfoil discontinuity. If you cut well on the foam blank centerlines, then you should be able to assemble a core and shucks that are compatible for skinning. Slice the skin at the discontinuity and skin the way you would normally. Hope that makes sense. John

RE: 18MZ program transfer
Too bad they couldn't take the trouble to make their files somewhat compatible so common data could be extracted. It can certainly be done despite the additional data in the 18. As far as releasing the file format is concerned, I would consider that a choice Futaba made about their proprietary data. If Futaba considers their file format is so critical to their design that they won't release the structure layout, that's lame but obviously within their rights. But if they won't produce a file reader/editor, that is not fine. I'm sure that I'm not the first to ask for this and it isn't even a difficult job so I have to consider it a total lack of interest in their customers. John

That may work for upconverting data file for use on the 18MZ but it fails when attempting to convert the other way around. I need to convert 18MZ file to 12Z files for use at the Nats in a week and a half. Is there anyway to do this besides the error prone, time-consuming manual method? I am out of time to do that and don't have both transmitters either. I do have a model file for the 18MZ version. Thanks John Gayer

RE: CG location when fuel is burned
No, you are saying the moment around the wing LE has changed which is true. That is not the same thing as the CG changing. Go back and look at the original equation I sent you. The CG is actually where the moment is zero. This location (dist) did not change. Your basic fallacy is when you equate a change in the moment at the LE to a chage in CG location. This is just not true.

RE: CG location when fuel is burned
It doesn't matter how much fuel is consumed as long as the tank is on the CG. The total weight is still the empty weight plus whatever fuel is onboard. I fail to understand why you think "dist" would change. I showed you mathematically why the CG does not change. Others have shown logically why the CG does not change. I suggest you go away and do some testing with your model to demonstrate to yourself that the CG does not change.

RE: CG location when fuel is burned
OK, lets try this again. We know the distance from the LE is the same to the CG of the empty model(ACEWT) and Full fuel tank(FUELWT) So the moment at the leading edge of the wing(LE) is: Moment@LE = dist * ACEWT + dist * FUELWT = dist *( ACEWT + FUELWT) Then the distance of this calculated moment is: New Dist to CG from Leading edge = dist * (ACEWT + FUELWT) / New total weight Since the total weight is ACEWT + FUELWT These weights are the same and cancel out leaving the distance to the CG from the LE exactly the same. RE: CG location when fuel is burned
What you are doing with an arbittrary datum point is calcuating moments around that point. When you pick the LE of the wing clearly there will be a moment arond that point. when the tank is empty. If the tank is then filled the moment dropping the tail would increase by the added weight times the distance to the tank CG.. There is only one point where there will be no moment with an empty tank and that is the empty weight CG. Both intuitively and mathmatically if you fill a tank placed at the empty weight CG and calculate the adjusted moment it will not changeas the moment arm of the tank is zero. John

RE: Proposed 2013/2014 Sequences
Verne, There are a couple of different things going on here. One is a discussion as to whether Advanced schedule shold be changed at all. The second is a discussion of the maneuvers in the proposed pattern. I don't see how changing the pattern afffects the transistion from Intermediate and the proposed schedule appears easier to me than the old one. I suspect that someone moving up to Advanced will score better early on for the new elements such as the cuban 8 and the two loops with 1/2 rolls than they will the slow roll and the four point, which are required elements. Your point is well-made. Both the Advanced and the Masters pilots on this thread are looking only at what they want in their pattern and not how it impacts the next lower class. However, I think the committee was looking in both directions. John

RE: Proposed 2013/2014 Sequences
Brian, I assume all these pilots have tried the two loops in the new advanced pattern? I have and it is not difficult if you use the throttle appropriately. It is far less difficult than trying to stretch a slow roll over 90 or 180 degrees at the top of a loop. This seems to be your reference point for difficulty. Advanced pilots will figure it out quite quickly. We have four multi-year advanced pilots out here in the western part of district 6 and others that compete less regularly. None of us were consulted. I am a beta tester for this pattern and would have appreciated being included in your informal survey. John Gayer

RE: Proposed 2013/2014 Sequences
Consider me another Advanced flyer voting for changing the Advanced pattern. While I have some issues with the proposed pattern, I agree with Scott that it is still an inadequate preparation for Masters and should be harder. And speaking of Masters, there are many Masters that are struggling with the current pattern. Perhaps they should be considered and we should decrease the difficulty of Masters. Makes more sense than not changing the Advanced pattern because some have not learned to fly a schedule equally well from both directions. Not changing because of low turnout in some areas is even more ludicrous. Not only is it irrelevant to the need for a schedule change, in the three contests I've attended this year, Advanced was the largest class in two(6 and 11) and still had a field of eight in the third. I fail to see why FAI and Masters pilots think they have a horse in this race. I suggest you use your expertise to make constructive suggestions about both patterns and drop resistance to changing the pattern. What could it possibly hurt to change the Advanced pattern???? RE: R/C Aerobatics Contest Board Initital Vote
Keith, If you take exception to this rule, go talk to the AMA. I suspect it has been in the rulebook forever, so why don't you contact the AMA, find out when it was proposed, by whom, and who was on the contest board at that time. Then take it up with them. As far as I know, it has nothing to do with the NSRCA, except for the fact that we have not asked for it to be removed. John

RE: R/C Aerobatics Contest Board Initital Vote
I'm just pointing out potential issues for the club and CD with ignoring safety rules once they are in place. The rejected "arming rule" the NSRCA proposed would have covered the case of the 400 mile Sportsman. Perhaps the AMA shold address the arming and disarming of electric motors used for propulsion but they have not -yet. Both the "failsafe" and "arming" proposed rules are specific instructions about safety inspections that need to be performed at RC Aerobatic competitions. The RC Aerobatic rulebook has eight safety rules including: 6.1: The CD at an AMA sanctioned event has the authority to perform safety inspections of any equipment and to prevent any participant from using equipment which in the CDs opinion is deemed unsafe. RE: R/C Aerobatics Contest Board Initital Vote
As I understand the process, eliminating a proposal at this stage indicates that the Contest Board considers a proposal unworhty of any further discussion or consideration at their level. That is to say while the CB is willing to consider proposals that affect the legal weight for AMA classes, they will not even consider a proposal that increases the weight for AMA classes. I would like to see a justification of that position. Same goes for the arming plug. There are two proposals- the NSRCA proposal which is similar to the FAI current position and the other similar to the original NSRCA proposal that met with opposition but did pass on the NSRCA rules survey. Looks like more pre-judgement to me. Of course the CB may have discussed all these proposals ad nauseum before taking the vote. If any of the safety proposals pass, you cannot ignore them like we all do the weight rule at a local contest. If you do and there is an incident, your liability exposure as a club and a CD just went way up. After all, you, as a CD, bent the SAFETY rules and exposed your competitors to increased risk UNNECESSARILY. Or so the legal battle will go. Relative to safety, at our contest this weekend, we checked failsafe operation. 5 planes out of 14 did not stop the prop(motor) or non-rolling idle(engine). John Gayer

27th Annual Roadrunner Pattern Contest- Albuquerque NM
<![if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]><![if gte mso 9]> <![endif]><![if gte mso 10]><![endif]> Once again it is that time of year to make plans to attend the 27th Annual Roadrunner Pattern contest. This year it will be held on May 19 and 20th at the Rocky Mountain Flying Machine(RMFM) field outside of Albuquerque, NM. This field is north of the Route 66 Casino on county road 36. Maps are available either through the RMFM website at http://rmfm.org or through the NSRCA website. Weather and size of entry field permitting we are planning to fly six rounds with four on Saturday and two on Sunday. We have both north-south and east-west runways that are over 500 feet in length with a petromat surface and no dropoff at the edges. There will be no issues due to early morning sun as both runways will be set up with stripes and 150 meter poles. We will also be doing a courtesy weight check and checking for proper failsafe operation. Since they are doing shooting the latest version of the Lone Ranger just a few miles away from the field, there have been a lot of improvements in the road between I-40 and our turnoff and, who knows, maybe Johnny Depp will show up at the contest to see what all the excitement is about. After all, we do need someone to trim the scores from the scoresheets(edward Scissorhands). Additionally we laid on a light show for Sunday afternoon. There will be a total eclipse of the sun after the contest. I suggest taking the third longest aerial tram in the world to the top of Sandia peak and watching the eclipse from 10000 feet looking across the Rio Grande valley and the city of Albuquerque(5000 feet). This kind of eclipse viewing opportunity does not come along often. You can also drive to the top of Sandia Peak if you prefer or even watch at the field which has a clear view to the west. The world famous Laguna burgers will be available for lunch both days at the contest plus the standard coffee and donuts in the morning. We are planning a Saturday night outing to Village Pizza as we have done for the Fall contest in the past. There is also a full casino and hotel within three miles of the field. If you have any questions please drop me an email or give me a call at 623-986-8206. I look forward to seeing many of you in a couple of weeks. The flyer and more information is on the NSRCA calendar. Thanks John Gayer CD

You need to communicate with Castle and send them the log. The supply voltage drop does not appear to be the result of high impedance, especially since the system has worked before and after. I notice that you said this was an ICE HV80. If it's not an ICE2 you are due a free upgrade from Castle anyway. John
