RE: Gyro not working
Well I must fess up, I sent the gyro back to Horizon and they sent me a new one, but said the one I sent back worked fine for them. I plugged in the new gyro and it also didn't work for me. I said to my self, I must have something set up wrong. I feel like an idiot. I had the plug going to Aux2 plugged in upside down! For some reason the bevel did not prevent it from going in wrong. It all works fine now. I am just waiting for some good weather to test fly the setup. Thanks for all the good advice. Jim

RE: Gyro not working
Jack I spent some time on the phone with John from Horizon. He wes very helpful and spent a lot of time with me. We came to the conclusion that I probably go a bad one and I am going to send it back for repair or replacement. Thanks for the good advice. Jim

RE: Gyro not working
I double checked. With the servo pluged directly into the RX it works fine. I keep thinking I have some setting wrong but everything looks correct to me. Are these gyros ever bad out of the box?

RE: Gyro not working
Yes, The rudder servo was working fine until I installed the gyro this morning. I will unplug the gyro and double check to make sure the servo is still works.

RE: Gyro not working
The travel adjust pot has no effect. I just checked and the servo is holding the rudder centered,so there is a signal going to the servo but moving the rudder stick on the TX has no effect.

Gyro not working
I just installed a JR G370A rate gyro on my rudder. I am using a Spektrum radio. I pluged the gain connector in AUX2 and the other connector in the rudder chanel. No matter what I do I can not get the rudder to move when I move the stick. The rudder is completely dead. Is there something I am missing? This is my first attempt at using a gyro. Any help would be appreciated. Jim

RE: 87
Rick, The G62 does good. I think it flies pretty scale like. It cruises around at about 1/2 throttle. It will do a nice big loop and a descent stall turn. It certainly is not overpowered. Definitly no unlimited verticle. If I were to do it again I would have a hard time deciding between the G62 or something like a DA85. Are you considering building one? Jim

RE: 87
DMichael, The crankcase was a vacuum formed part from Ziroli. The cylinders were made from plastic kits purchased from Williams Brothers. The pushrod tubes are AL tubing. The sparkplug wires are black electrical wire. The sparkplug boots were made from AL tubing. I hope that helps. Jim

Carburator spring
Hi, I am setting up the throttle connection on my DLE 111. I am planning on disconnecting the throttle return spring on the carb so there is not the constant tension on the throttle servo. Is this a good idea? Is this common practice ? any down side? This is my first 111cc airplane so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

RE: Hitec servos and Spektrum
I think I solved my problem. I tried the same servos with a Futaba RX and TX and had the same poor result. I was starting to think the servos were bad but then I tried a 5 cell battery pack and the problem disappeared! I think there must be something wrong with the 4 cell pack. It is an old pack I was just using for set up. It measures ok on an ESV but must not deliver the necessary voltage under load. With the 5 cell pack everything works great! I guess do not assume a pack is good even if it measures ok on an ESV. Lesson learned. Thanks, Jim

RE: Painting
I ended up wet sanding the whole top surface of the wing with 800 grit and then re spraying the clear. It turned out good the second time. Here are some interesting weights. Sanding took off 3 grams( I would have thought more). The new coat of clear weighs 9 grams(less than I thought it would). This was the left wing panel. It started out 3 grams lighter than the right but now is 3 grams more than the right panel. I am happy with the net result. Thanks, Jim

RE: Do Hitec Servos work with Spectrum Ar7000
I am testing the set up on a 2700 mha 4 cell NIMH pack so the voltage should not be an issue. I do not have a programmer. The symptom is that the servos moves in the correct direction but there is a delay. They do not smoothly follow the Tx stick movement. It is very pronounced. I did program the Tx just like the link in the other post. The fact that the JR servos work ok makes me think the programming is correct. Jim

Do Hitec Servos work with Spectrum Ar7000
Hi All This is not a jet question but perhaps someone here was had this problem. I am setting up the radio gear in a 106" Hurley Extra I built. I am using a Spektrum DX7 TX and an AR7000 RX. I am using Hitec HS-7955TG servos.I am using 2 elevator servos. I used an Elevator to Aux2 mix so I could use 2 servos. When I test the setup the servos move very spastically. It could never be flown like this. I went through the radio programming about 3 times. Always the same result. I then plugged 2 JR servos in place of the Hitecs and the JR's worked flawlessly. Are Hitec servos not compatible with a Spektrum radio????? Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, Jim

Painting
Hi All, I am painting with Omni base coat and #161 clear coat. When I sprayed the clear on one wing I ended up with an area thet did not get enough clear. It looks dry and does not shine like the rest of the wing. I did not plan on polishing the clear-it looks good without polishing. How can I fix this? Is there a way short of sanding and respraying the whole wing? I do not want to respray the whole wing because of weight. One more question, what and where is the best lighting for spraying? I have good celing lighting but would some side lighting help? Thanks, Jim

Clearcoat
I am painting a 106" wingspan Extra IMAC airplane. I am posting on the Jet forum because I know you guys paint. Very few IMAC flyers build and almost none paint except for cowls and wheel pants. I used PPG K36 prima, and Omni MBC basecoat. In the past I used PPG DAU75 Delclear as my clearcoat. I also used Omni MC161 clear. I am interested in keeping the plane at a reasonable weight. I am wondering what you guys are using for a Clearcoat nowdays? Thanks, Jim DeYoung

RE: Ohio RC Super Chipmunk plans
Thunderbolt, $350 is incredible! I thought they would enlarge them for a nominal fee. I guess not. I may have to go the same route you are going. I will have to call them and see how much they want for the size I am interested in. Jim

RE: Ohio RC Super Chipmunk plans
Thunderbolt, Precision Cut Kits has the Chipmunk plans. I talked to Larry,at precision Cut Kits, last week. He can sell you plans that are enlarged to the size you want, but will not cut out a kit from plans that are not the original size. Your post caught my eye because I was looking at that same Chipmunk and decided to build one. My plan was to enlarge it about 12% and put a DLE 55 in it . I thintk the original is a little too small for a 50 or 55. The down side of my plan is that I will have to fabricate my own cowl and canopy since the stock stuff will not fit. I am not sure why but I have been very interested in the Chipmunk lately. I have been reading and researching about Art Scholl and his Chipmunk on line. What size Chipmunk do you plan to build? Would you use fixed gear or retracts? At different times Art Scholls had both, so both are scale. I thought I would go with fixed gear. Good luck with your Chipmunk! Jim

RE: My Wood & Foam Bridi UFO Build
David, I was thinking of the ST Bluehead .60 and others of that time frame. That was provably early 70's. The ST Bluehead was a cross flow engne with a baffled piston. It was not schnuerle ported. It could not keep up with a modern schnuerle ported .55. It may be a different story with the Rossi etc. Jim

RE: My Wood & Foam Bridi UFO Build
RG, I built a Dirty Birdy from RCM plans 2 years ago. I do not know if there is a size difference between the UFO and Dirty Birdy. I powered my D.B with an OS55AX. I could not be happier with the airplane/engine combination. The AX55 has more power than the .60's used in the 70's. The vertical performance is excelent, but not unlimited. The UFO may be larger but if it is the same as the D.B. the .55AX is not a bad choice. Jim

Fuselage stringers
Hi All, I know this is not a spacific Carden question but the carden builders out there may know the answer. I am building a 100CC Hurley Extra. It was featured in Model Aviation about 5 or 6 years ago. The Fuselage uses light ply with 3/8 stringers , uprights and cross members. My question is what density should the 3/8 square be? Can it be 5 or 6 lb stock or should it be stiffer wood? Also how much difference will 1 pound make in the finished airplane. Will a 26 lb. plane fly IMAC better than a 27 pound plane? (I am not interested in 3D). What do you guys think? Jim

RE: Ziroli 87
Fear2722 I completed 87" Ziroli Stearman this spring. I am powering mine with a G62. I think I added about 10 OZ of lead in the nose. I found I have to have the G62 turning about 7300 RPM on the ground to have enough power to loop well and do a descent stall turn. When I first flew the plane I was running a 22x8 prop. That prop was too much load for the G62. It flew level well but no aerobatics. I then changed the pitch to 7 and got a Jtec muffler. After these changes it flies very well and I think quite scale. If I had to do it all over I think I would use a DA85 . You can always throttle back. It is a great plane. I hope you enjoy your build. I covered and painted mine with the F&M Stits stuff. It weighs 34 pounds. Jim

RE: Midwest 27% extra 330S?
Jay273, I have been flying the Midwest Extra for a few years. Mine is powered with a Moki 2.10. I think it flys great. way better than the other .40 & .60 size stuff I have. I do not compete but use it as a sport flyer. People tell me that when you step up in size they usually fly better. I am in the process of building a 100CC Extra from plans. It is the Hurley Extra that was in Model Aviation about 5 years ago. I think if you are used to the smaller stuff the Midwest extra will be a treat to fly. If you are flying a trainer now you will provably want to fly somthing a bit more high preformance before flying the MW Extra. Good luck. Jim
