RE: CRRC PRO GF26I
Ok,, you probably have heard this but this is how I do it and it works for me. I put my thumb over the intake throttle open, ignition off and prop over until fuel enters the carb and my thumb is wet. Then I put the choke on, throttle high idle, ignition on and prop until it pops. This is normally 2 to 3 flips. Then choke off and it always cranks in 2 to 3 attempts. I have a 6 prop over crank pretty much down pat. The plug is gapped per spec and origional 1st plug. Fuel is PREMIUM with Belray 2 stroke Premium racing oil at 40:1 I have been flying mine since they first came out and after initial birthing pains with the ignition module and replacement, mine is extremely reliable.
ORIGINAL: Patxipt Guys, I bought a GF26i V2 last week, and I'm finding it extremely hard to hand start. Fires somewhat ok with the electric starter, idles and throttles well, but other than that, it's a pig! I can't even hand start it after immediate shutdown. The low speed needle is roughly set between both sagging points and the HSN is still set to factory specs. I get good spark on the plug outside and have set the gap to around 0.8mm. Fuel is 25:1 95 octane/synth mix and prop a 16x8. Is this a sign of a faulty ignition? The carb seems to be pumping well, it's a WT 793. Thanks for your input ;)
Difficult to answer but it does sound like weak ignition. Make sure your batteries are charged and correct voltage. I use 2000 ma NIMH on my ignition. Also check the plug gap and consider a new plug. If you have a difficult time starting after it has run and warmed up my $ is on ignition. Mine will start within 1 to 2 flips hot.
ORIGINAL: Kema If you get good deal why not buy? Just put engine to cargo bay luggage and everything is fine. I have heard that DL engines go for 150$ at mainland China if you are chinise. They usually double prices for foreigners in every store anyway. Haggle, haggle and haggle or if you know locals, it's easier to get great prices. Listprice in China is usually just a point to start haggling. Offering a third of that should be your first move.
Perhaps your right you can just throw it in the suitcase. I have traveled to over 38 countries and lived around the world and for me I would never take that risk. But if anyone wants to try it have at it,, at your own risk. Once I was called to examine my checked luggage after it had boarded the plane. I went on the ramp and opened it for authorities to show them my travel alarm. They laughed [:D] but think of how it might have turned out if I had something on the prohibit list and not delcared. [:(]

RE: I'm off to Hong Hong - where can I buy a gas engine?
Just info and your trip may vary. My last trip out of the country was to Europe. On my return there where photos of prohibited items for the airlines. Don't ask me why but one of the items clearly showed model airplane engines. I guess you might start one in your luggage while in the air. Doesn't make any sense to me but it was definitely on the prohibit to fly list. You might confirm this with someone in the "know" with the airlines before you buy unless you decide to mail it back to US. I have bought many engines out of the country and my last temptation was a beautiful engine made in (a country north of china) but I didn't buy it due to the ban on flying it home.

RE: ASM Su 26M Sukhoi
ORIGINAL: jerrya What causes the plane to snap in a turn? Too tight a turn and and too little airspeed? Also could you explain how you modified the wings to bolt to the inside of the fuselage vs the stock way the small screws were originally designed to hold the wings in place. You mentioned almost losing a wing this way, so I assume that you have modified this. Are you still using the control throws you mentioned earlier, ie, 1/2 the recommended deflection in the manual for initial flights for your low rate, and the recommended initial throws for your high rate? Enjoy your comments on assemblying and flying this plane.
Sorry for the delay in answering I was out of town. Snap is too slow AND too much elevator. Keep the speed UP until you are comfortable. Too little elevator is better than too much. I am flying at 1/2 recommended throws listed in the manual. You are correct. To put bolts inside the fuse you will have to cut a piece of plywood and put it inside the inner most wing rib in a location where you will be able to drill through the fuselage. (I reco 1/4 " ply so you can thread it with a tap.). Then you can put a nylon bolt from inside the fuse into the wing. I havent done this yet due to being out of town. CAUTION KEEP up the speed on landing. Fly it in on about 1/4 throttle until over the runway then cut the power. I use expo also on the elevator. More to come later tired from driving 500 miles today.

RE: ASM Su 26M Sukhoi
Thought maybe one of you folks that bought one might have updates. I now have many flights on mine and finally learned to make 3 point landings and sometimes slow enough to be tail wheel first. Flying vertical I have to hold down elev for straight up flight. The nose wants to pull up and over. Landing I come in fast, hot low power and only add flare over the runway. Timing is everything as the large round cowl adds lots of drag and it slows fast. Keep idle just a couple clicks up from full idle. I increased the wheel size on mine 1/2 " more than factory wheels for a little more shock / less bounce on the grass. Flat spins are possible. Haven't been able to do inverted. Flat spin is about 60 degrees up power off full up and left aileron until it begins to spin then in the spin hold full up but slowly move aileron to full right. Add a touch of power if the flat spin is entered. Recovery from the flat spin. I give a touch of right rudder and center elev / ail. Power is back and I add a bit of power in the pull up. WARNING RECOVER FROM THE FLAT SPIN HIGH. Almost lost it this week due to color on the wing. Pattern is the same top and bottom. Plane was slow and under gray cloud. It snapped in a turn and I could not tell after the snap which side I was seeing. Fortunately the wheels [:D] are on the bottom and I recovered. As they would say way down south, How ya'll doin?

RE: The end of RCM and civilization as we know it
Ok I have to agree with the "top lines". I am also concerned about the deterioration in society with "me first" and youngsters getting tired thumbs. I remember at the age of 9 saving to buy Popular Science at the local grocery so I could find out what to build or get in trouble with next. I rebuild lawnmower engine, made gunpower, built rockets and at 18 had to put myself through college. I took enough courses in engineering to get a job as a welder/machinist and pay for the education. I wanted to fly r/c in college but didn't have the time or $$. Best I could do was scrape up enough to buy a old Fox .35 and ringmaster. But it was an eduction. College graduation as an Engineer was exciting, and I found I had orders to Vietnam as a USAF Pilot. More excitement. I see too many people who want to fly r/c by buying a trainer .40 and fly it. After learning to fly they quit. Reason bored just flying. They miss 90% of the hobby by not having to fit retract landing gear where the hardwood beams went in the first Topflite contender of the 70's with the large KPS 12 servos. They never built the transmitter and then had to problem solve it and then learn to fly. IT is too easy to buy a cheap r/c rig and learn to fly much like running a r/c boat in the pool. Then bored. But the bigger question is our country has lost the excitement of flight. You don't see as much (I know about EAA and others) but people wanting to fly. People I speak to aren't interested in toy airplanes even if I did get the pot voltage from the encoder set to the correct value to prevent damage to the computer chip on the encoder board. People don't see how to machine a nose wheel for the C130 you spent a year building or working with carbon fiber to reinforce an engine mount. Too many see only toy airplanes and bore quickly. Building a complex model is as much fun as flying one. But given the loss of technology where will our country be in the next 100 years. We outsource too much of technology in the name of short term profit. Have you seen who makes the circuits that go in cell phones. If we don't have that technology here who has it, and what else can it be used for. ? The failure of parents to hold children to standards of education will eventually lead to the fall of society as we know it unless there is a change. Maybe the current economic situation will make parents wake up to the competativeness of the workplace and understand what the future has for kids that don't learn! There is a not totally a dark cloud for those that do take the time. My grandkids have won in science fairs in elementary schools with study of volcanos, analysis of spectragraphic analysis of metals, and production of hydrogen through electrolysis. I know there are other kids that are out there striving to excell. They will be the winners of the future if we can keep the country providing the opportunity.

RE: ASM Su 26M Sukhoi
Update. Flew 4 flights today. Light winds and temps. Few things 1) When landing carry power like a bipe and don't pull all the power off until about 3' over the runway. If you do it will drop like a stone. I set full throttle trim for takeoff and leave it that way to land. I also add 2 clicks on the throttle stick for flying until power off for touchdown. The plane will taxi at full throttle trim but not fly. 2) Vertical flight the nose tucks down up elevator is needed to maintain vertical 3) In slow flight mine will drop the left wing tip very quickly. Not a soft stall 4) The wing screws came loose in flight. I almost lost a wing panel with a screw comming out. If you overtighten it will break the wing panel. I will modify for inside screws. THIS IS A WARNING TO YOU ! 5) The 1/8" lite ply screws holding the rudder in place stripped out. The lite ply is too thin. Reinforce it with spruce below before inserting the rudder servo. 6) The 3 1/2 " wheels I added made for better rough field landings. Otherwise the plane flies very smooth and precise. Flat spins are nice but WARNING it takes a lot of airspace to recover. I actually got into an accelerated stall while diving out of a spin. More to come but it will be 2 weeks before flying again.
ORIGINAL: viper1676 I got this plane during Hobby people's Father's day special. I'm hoping to start the build either tonight or tomorrow. I'm putting an O.S. 1.20AX in it. I was a little concerned about power for it, but I had this engine in an Ultimate that weighed 13+ and it pulled it around pretty quick. For the servo's, I was going to go with the DS-821's. I know they are below the specs but I don't plan on doing anything nuts with this plane, and these servo's have worked pretty well for me.
The OS engine is pretty strong and I think you are ok. Servos. Prop size will be important. I use a 16" dia prop and only about 2 1/2 to 3" of the tips extend pass the large radial cowl. I think the digital is overkill but I followed the instructions. My guess is a good servo will fly it. But remember it does have large control surfaces. There is a warning in the manual about NOT flying at full throttle in a dive as it will probably lose some parts you want to fly with. [8|] Been there done that before. I did switch to larger 3 1/2 wheels today for our grass field. If it were just grass I think the OE wheels would be ok but we have a few bumps. If you check the items on this thread you should be able to build a nice plane. I did not install the dash where gauges would fit because I have the 2.4 G rec mounted in that area and I can see my LEd for binding with the canopy on.
ORIGINAL: jerrya Thanks for the continued updates on the Sukhoi. Mine should be here this week. Please keep us posted on yours and your final setups as you continue to fly it. The missing wing retention bolts you mentioned, are you satisfied with this method? The online manual shows these to be 4x25 wood? screws. What size hole did you drill in the tube for them? How did you add the weight to the elevator tips? What is the oz/in rating of the servos you are using for aileron and elevator? Jerry
I used 4 Futuba 90 oz 3152 High Torque digital (new) servos from ebay. The rudder was a 150 oz servo from RCU classified. Nice new servo works well. Digital also. The batteries are Dual 1200 Nicads through a Y connector to the Futuba HD Digital switch. I know there are folks will cover the you can nots on dual batteries but I can make this work. Every 3 months I cycle all packs. The radio is XPS 2.4 from Graupner using frequency hopping and working well also. The control is rock solid with this configuration. One small item. Our grass field has a few bumps and I am considering larger wheels. This doesn't mean the ones that came with it don't work. They do, but if you have a rough field you might consider the larger wheels.

RE: ASM Su 26M Sukhoi
Rain can't fly [:o] A few notes on the sukhoi 1) I did not use servo extensions. I use solder/shrink tube and extend all leads. This way there is nothing to unplug. 2) The push rods included for the elevators were almost too long. You can't cut them they are only threaded on the end. The servo mount should have been 1/4" forward so you will have to be sure to position the control horn back far enough on the elevator. If you are too close the push rod and clevis will have to be replaced. 3) (covered this in previous post) The screws for holding the wing on were not in the box and I had to call for them. They arrived promptly and the supplier provided great support. 4) One of the clevis had a bent pin and could not be used. 5) one of the wheel collars was not properly drilled. I drilled it out to use it. 7) I added lock washers to the landing gear screws, (they were not suppose to be used) But I felt the need to insure I wasn't installing drop off gear. 8) The hole for the rudder linkage was difficult to find. 9) I used velcro to hold the tank vs. the tie wraps. Hope this helps.

They only cover Test Flying and Aerobatci. The Test Flight is what I used for the first flight. The CG at 4" is pretty correct though. I used about 20% down elevator to fly inverted. However this was with my 18oz tank full. The 4" CG was at 0 fuel so I am a bit nose heavy with full tank and 14 oz on the nose. 98 today and too hot / windy to fly.
ORIGINAL: Crazy4Flight thanks for the flight report. I is great to hear from and actual user aka average joe pilot. Are you using any expo on your rates? As for 30% fuel I bought the 2 gallons from @ $10.00 each from former club memeber leaving the hobby. I know the Saito loves 30% but would not buy it at normal street price. bob
Bob,, I used 40% expo but on my radio expo only is active in high rate. So I could not use expo until after I reset the throws. Then I flew the 2nd flight with HI rate (the low initial flight settings / also the low rate in the manual). The expo did make a difference and made it smoother in the neutral position. The winds were 20 mph and I was being bounced around while the other folks were packing it in for the day. My landing was long and smooth but "not my typical landing". The plane stayed down when I pulled up elev to keep the tail down in the high winds. I am thinking I might be a bit nose heavy at the 4" cg reco in the manual. I normally fly my planes tail heavy so they will flat spin better. But the 4" is a good start point.
