RE: super tigre .23 muffler needed?
Yes, they did make a muffler. Here is a pic; the style is exactly the same as for the larger engines. It took me a long time to find mufflers for some small Super Tigre engines I had. In the end I found two from a guy in Australia - from a wanted ad on RCG. One is a beautiful polished one in the standard style; the other is a drum or barrel shaped. So, after market mufflers exist in addition to the factory ones. When I was looking, I had a response from Raindave who indicated the K&B 20 (and 28) sportster series mufflers are a perfect fit. These show up on ebay, are available from MECOA, and used from Bob's engines http://bobsengines.com/. The bolt size for the G20 23 and X15 15/19 are identical. The G15 may also be the same. The 40 size is too big and will not fit. Jim

RE: Maco models?
I can't help with any information, but I seem to remember seeing Maco ads in some of the old magazines. Span was pretty small. maybe 38"?? Can you post pictures of the box and plans to show us what you are working with. Is there enough detail on the plans to scratch the model? If not, trace the parts when you build it so all the parts are recorded. I think it's a pretty rare kit; I don't recall ever seeing one on ebay. Jim

RE: Spanish Bucker Jungmann Paint Scheme
I'll take a wild guess at this based on dabbling with plastic models. The Germans sent various aircraft to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. These, it seemed, were in original German military paint schemes. They were then remarked with Spanish insignia. Speculate that these planes needed repainting and touchup, so that the Spanish continued with the original colors. This suggests the Jungmann would have been painted in RLM grey 02, either originally or as a repaint. Here is a link to an early Bf-109 in that color. The major model paint companies have this color and it would be stocked in a large model shop in the plastic section. Mfgr's = Testors Model Master, Tamiya, etc. It could then be color matched for your plane. It's also possible some research on the plastic model forums will yield some accurate answers. http://www.modelingmadness.com/scotts/axis/luft/me/109/109v1.htm Jim

Retracts with reversed cylinders
So far I have found Robart 531 (85 degree) retracts with the cylinders on the outside (cylinders point toward wingtips and gear retracts toward wing root). Are there any other options out there for a 10# plane? I've looked at the Robart spring down series and can't identify any, nor can I with Spring Airs. Am I just missing them? Plane is a Mooney 201 - not a Warbird for sure but I thought the Warbird guys would be most familar with retracts. The plane at 70" span is too small for the Top Flite Bonanza/Mentor retracts. Jim

RE: I have an Hirtenberger
I just rebuilt one of these. It had the same type of ring. It's not like a dykes ring; it's just a regular ring with a groove, maybe for oil retention like you mentioned. I replaced it with a Bowman ring, which is a standard ungrooved ring. Jim

RE: Cleaning castor off color anodized parts?
Thanks to alll for the input. What does not work is "Purple Power". I had used it to strip paint off plastic models with no ill effect. A 3 hour dip of the backplate in a small cup of Purple Power resulted in dark spots and white powdery deposits. I should have checked it sooner, but, luckily I didn't dunk the rest of the parts in it. Back to the antifreeze bath. I'll try the suggestion to heat the head and wipe it with alcohol. Jim

Cleaning castor off color anodized parts?
Antifreeze in a crock pot will remove the color (ST G.60 bluehead), right? Do I soak the head in Dawn Power Dissolver, heated, unheated, full strength, for how long? And, is Power Dissolver the same as Simple Green? I've used that to take paint off plastic models without harming the plastic. Finally, does anyone have a method to get a ST prop driver off without a puller? Thanks, Jim

RE: Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
For the sake of clarity can we agree that there were two types of "conversions"? 1) The conversion kits sold by O&R that converted a side port engine to a front rotary valve engine. The kit included a new front cover with venturi and front rotor crank plus the other necessary parts, and 2) A conversion of an existing ignition engine to glow by removing the timer and running the engine on a glow plug. Jugglers engine is the second type of conversion, i.e. it probably started out as a front rotary valve ignition engine and was converted to glow. I'm sorry if there was confusion caused by my mentioning the conversion kits in one of my posts above. There was no intention to suggest that is what Juggler had. A guy named Woody Bartelt from Michigan used to sell repro timers. Someone may know how to contact him. Could have been something like Antique Ignition, or Antique Electric??? Model Engine Collectiors Association (MECA) has a site I think. Jim

RE: Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
Are you sure it's a 60 size engine? If it is, it looks like a 1948 O&R 60 front rotor. It is missing the ignition (spark) timer, which fits between the carb front and the prop driver. These were also sold as glow engines. In that case there was a little black metal collar that covered the exposed place where the timer goes. Someone has installed a Champion glow plug in place of the spark plug (VG = glow). When you turn it over you should be able to look in the cutaway portion of that brass ring and see the flat on the crankshaft where it activates the points. If there is no flat on the crank, it is a glow only crankshaft. If it's in good internal condition, it will run on glow fuel. I remember the big Ohlssons to have the larger plugs with the 3/8 threads. There are adaptors around that screw into the head and allow you to use a standard sized glow plug. Jim
