RE: ROYAL - MARUTAKA and MK KITS COMPLETE LISTING
Here are scans of the kits listed in the MK catalog that was included in my MK Cessna 310G kit. The catalog also included a variety of accessories, which I have not scanned. There is no date on the catalog. Jim

Michael, I'll post pictures of the catalog pages when I get a chance. My MK catalog does not show a B Stuka. As to the MK 310G, I haven't been able to find anything on it. Jim

RE: Royal Kits
Oops. My MK kit may not be a Royal kit after all. I just realized my kit is a G and Royal's is a Q. A Royal 310Q was just listed on ebay with some pictures of the plans. There is a very slight size difference in span. The fuselage construction is basically the same with minor differences. The biggest difference is the Royal has wood construction for the cabin top behind the windshield. The MK shows a windscreen and cabin top as one piece back about to the rear seat. The Royal instructions included in my kit clearly are marked 310Q, so they don't belong with the MK kit. It's a beautiful kit, but it apparently does not belong in the Royal thread. Jim

RE: Royal Kits
I just picked up a Royal Cessna 310G kit. I knew the kits were packaged as Royal and Marutaka. What was new to me was this kit is boxed as an MK kit. The plans are marked MK and the designer indicated as M. Kato. There's an MK catalog sheet showing pattern planes like the Blue Angel as well as the 310, Zero, Hein, and a couple of others. The instruction sheet is marked Royal. Jim

RE: Pulsar Bipe Anyone?
On the used plane I bought the ailerons used flat, pinned hinges (like Kletts) inset 1/16 down from the top surface. The leading edge of the aileron was beveled so the "point" was 1/16 down. I replaced the hinges with 3 new ones in different spots. They were really in there; I had to cut them flush because they wouldn't pull out. Jim

RE: Pulsar Bipe Anyone?
My blue and yellow Pulsar was built in 1978. Power was a K&B 61 pumper with pipe. I bought a used one here on RCU a few years ago and started to restore it. The fuselage is in progress with the glass around the nose fixed and a new firewall installed. The tail parts are new. For nostalgia reasons I am staying with K&B, but will use the twister head. It's been on the back burner for a while. I loved the plane and will follow your progress. Jim

RE: Vintage 60 size engine
Here's a link to an excellent ignition Ohlsson 60. Watch it to see if it sells. If it sells for less than the buy it now price, the completed auction search will give the actual price. If yours is anywhere near as nice, it might justify getting the ignition parts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ohlsson-60-Ignition-Model-Airplane-Engine-Antique-RARE-/250941681551?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6d4a2f8f Jim

RE: Vintage 60 size engine
I think it's a 1948 or later large port Ohlsson. These differed from the earlier versions in having an aluminum head and the larger, more rectangular exhaust port and provision for a small plug. They may have been sold as either ignition or glow. When glow there usually was a little black metal cap over the exposed brass just behind the prop. Check to see if it has an ignition crank. Turn it over, look in the cutaway in the brass bearing and verify if there is a flat ground into the crank. The flat acts as a cam to open the points. If the flat is there it can be converted back to ignition. While the parts are available, they are fairly costly. Ohlsson 60s are pretty common and it may not make economic sense to buy the parts unless you got the engine cheaply. I'm not familiar enough with engine collecting to know if the large port engines are worth more than the small exhaust engines. Jim

RE: Club Enya
Mike, mine is different. The hole where your detent rod protrudes is threaded on my carb. In that hole is a screw with a slotted head and a hole in the center. IIRC the screw and detent are one unit, but I am not where I can get to the engine. The screw itself is headless, i.e. it is the diameter of the body - 3mm. The hole going down to the detent at the top of the carb was missing its screw. My choke and detent worked OK, though mine might be assembled improperly. Jim

RE: Club Enya
My instructions are xeroxes of xeroxes. I can make out the part numbers pretty well on my scans. The screw in question is 66 and it's between the idle speed screw and the idle mix screw in the picture (51 and 53). Part number is 604C63. Wow, I just realized there are two of those parts. The second is 60 and it is the allen screw that holds in the nv extension. The terminology is "hollow screw (3x3)", which I took to mean it was drilled through. Hollow screw may just mean allen screw and not a screw with a hole drilled in it. In that case, the screw may do as you suggest and stop the barrel from being removed when the choke is pulled. So I am still looking for the solution to my idle problem. The screw I made has a head and doesn't go down to the barrel; it won't stop the barrel from coming out and it won't cut all the air if in fact that is even necessary. Can you tell if your screw has a hole drilled. Jim

RE: Club Enya
The parts list definitely shows a hollow screw in the hole. Whether it's necessary or even furnished is another question. My engine was running with a Fox idle bar plug which may have contributed to the lack of idle. It wasn't that it slowed down or died; it just ran too fast. I also made sure the needle valve body was clean, but that was after I had run it. Maybe someone can pull their barrel and confirm if I'm on the right track as to the hole aligning with the slot in the barrel to feed air at low speeds. Here are the instructions. Jim

RE: Club Enya
Earl: The parts list shows this as a hollow screw. It was also missing on the 120R I bought a while ago. I first tried running it this fall, and while it ran fine, it would not idle below about 3500 rpm. On taking apart the carb it looks as though the hole for the screw lines up with a slot in the barrel, feeding air into the engine. I guessed that mine was getting too much air to idle, so I found a screw that fit and drilled a small hole down the center. Unfortunately, I can't report results as I haven't tried to run it since I made the screw. Since yours runs fine without the screw I must have guessed wrong on why mine won't idle down. My barrel closes completely. Jim

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
It's been a couple of years since I built my Fleet wings. If I remember I fastened to the workbench a long (6 feet) piece of that 1" square aluminum tubing in front of the leading edge. Then I somehow fastened (taped probably) the leading edge to the aluminum bar, level and at the right height. The ribs went unglued into the leading edge and were glued in place on the spars. That kept the fronts of the ribs aligned. There are jigs to hold the spars in position. They may be u-shaped 3/16 balsa. Jim

Super job Ed. It was the great looking planes on this thread that prompted me to find a set of plans and build a Smoothie. Mine hasn't flown. I don't have a radio in it, and the engine is new and needs to be broken in. I am half thinking about scaling up the plans to 65 inches and building one for a 60. Jim

RE: Senior Telemaster Scratch Build
Not to hijack Jason's build, but here are some pictures of my current Telemasters. The Senior is scratch built from my dad's original kit plans from the 1970s; the kit actually used the RCM plans. The 73" 40 sized is built from a modern Hobby-Lobby kit. Both are altered: the Senior more so with 2-piece bolt on wing, inset ailerons, flaps, Cessna style tail shape, and slightly altered fuselage profile. BME G90 conversion, not yet flown. The 40 has a $7 flea market Como 40 and has been flown quite a bit. Like Rich6170 says, modify them into whatever you want. Or, build them stock. Either way a great airplane. Jim

That's pretty amazing that the joiner broke vertically right at the wing/fuse join. Could it be that the stress on the joiner was not up and down (flight/landing loads) but fore and aft movement? Can the wing tip be moved fore and aft at all when everything is snugged up? Like Ray W., I'd rather have the joiner fail than the spar. Either way it's not good. Jim

That's a very sanitary fix Bob. In what way did the tongues break; did you save one and can you provide a picture? I have had a half-finished Concept Fleet sitting around for ages and am getting interested again after seeing the recent posts. I had wrapped my spar boxes with carbon and kevlar tow. That will help them hold up but won't do anything if the tongues break. Jim
