RE: Who else has failed on their first build?
Over weight & tail heavy is not good, even if it's just a little.

Thanks Dave, that's what I was thinking. I'm just a little leery of using yellow wood glue. I had issues with warping the last time & everything was weighted down on a flat surface overnight.

RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
Dave or Joe, What type glue did you use for laminating the blades & leading edges of the Horizontal stab? The plans specify gorilla glue, but not which type. I'm guessing that ca would be the best thing to use for leading edge of the horizontal stab. I've had issues with aliphatic resin (wood) glue causing warping in the past. Can't seem to get good CA glue anymore. Nobody sells Zap here anymore, just the rebranded stuff.:-( Joe Pape

For those of you who are thinking about ordering a kit, the quality of the wood & laser cutting is excellent. I'm planning to start on mine in the next few days. Thinking of starting a new build thread in the scale airplanes forum. What do you guys think? Joe Pape

Joe, after seeing the numbers, 1/4 scale is a bit on the large side. 1/5 scale would be plenty big enough.:-) The PA-18 would be cool also

Dave, I really enjoyed your build thread. I'm going to follow your lead & keep it simple, with some scale detailing. I'm kind of thinking about painting it up like the Ford Fliver airplane. Blue fuselage with the Ford Script on the sides & silver wings. I would go for a 1/5 scale with a Evolution radial on it:-) Joe

RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
Joe, Thanks, I'm looking forward to the build. I've been cheeking out all the build threads on here & rcgroups. I've been away from R/C for a while flying full scale. I kind of miss the building & flying. My goal is to have it flying next year. I want to be able fly it at our Aviation Awareness Day & Airshow at the Madison Ind Airport next Oct. I got Lewis Patton (Lou KY) to fly his Turbine powered F-15 last year for us. Also, Wayne Mason (Radcliff Ky) was also kind enough to fly his Scale Apachi Heli for us. Both were a big hit. I think the PCA-2 will be too.:-) The Airshow this year is Oct 6th ( Madison Municipal Airport 3919 IMS Lane Madison Ind, 47250) Lewis & Wayne will be back again this year. Lewis is bringing a few more jet guys with him this year. The gates open at 9:00. The Airshow starts at noon. My Tiger Moth will be on display. We've got some good stuff lined up:-) Hint, Hint, a 1/4 scale PCA-2 would be great, especially with one of the evolution radials on it:-) Joe Pape

RE: chipmuck
To bad there isn't any current model airplane engines made that turn counter clockwise. If the op could swap out his current engine to one that turned counterclockwise, he would find that his airplane would now try to turn left.

RE: chipmuck
I'm sorry that you don't get it. P-factor does not exist in straight & level flight. It only exists during maneuvers involving high angles of attack, like climbing. For those of you who don't know what angle of attack is/means, here's the def: Angle of Attack is most frequently defined as the angle between the cord line of the wing, and the relative wind. Generally, it is sufficient to say that the angle of attack is simply the angular difference between where the wing is headed and where it is going. (per FAA's Flight training Handbook). The FAA's Flight training handbook is really good and is written such that an 8th grader can understand it. It can be downloaded from their web site free. If torque reaction from the engine & propeller, corkscrewing effect of the slipstream, gyroscopic action of the propeller, and asymmetric loading of the propeller (P-factor) was not an issue with our models, there would be no need to do any trimming to them if they were built straight & true. Like it or not, all the trimming that you say you do to your aircraft is to counter the effect of those 4 items. FYI: I've been building & flying model airplanes for 45 years of my 50 years on this earth. Also, I've been flying full scale for almost 25 years. I'm also an aircraft mechanic. My real job is a mechanical engineer.

For those of you who would like to learn something about the aerodynamic forces acting on all aircraft, model & full scale. See the link that I have attached. Especially read pages 4-26 & 4-27. If you can grasp/understand this, it will make trimming out your aircraft much easier/faster. http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/pilot_handbook/media/PHAK%20-%20Chapter%2004.pdf

RE: chipmuck
You can believe whatever you want. But, P-factor is very real on our model aircraft, and is a contributing factor during take off with a tail dragger until the tail is raised, reducing the angle of attack. I used to think that p-factor, torque, etc was a bunch of bunk with our models until I started flying full scale. Talk about an eye opener. The rudder is a wonderful thing if you learn to use it.

This assumes that the engine turns clockwise when viewed from the cockpit. P-factor & torque also come into play during take-off. P-factor effects all aspects of flight, but is more pronounced in high angles of attack. I've been flying full scale for 20 something years. A good demonstration of p-factor is go into a climb, then take your feet of the rudder peddles. The nose of the plane will go to the left. Very quickly at that. P-factor: During a climb, the ascending blade has a lesser angle of attack than the descending blade. RE: the ascending blade is taking a very little bite of air while the descending blade is taking a great big bite. Joe

That's really nice. That's a later model C-3. The plans that I have are for the Razorback. I friend of mine had one too. It had some really neat history to it. At one point in it's life, it was part of a flying circus. It was black with orange wings. He only had it for a short while. He sold it to someone in New York.

RE: Beginning control line?
I have to disagree about avoiding cox control line planes. Both the Chipmunk & PT-19 are very good C/L trainers. We trained my oldest nephew with the Chipmunk. He was flying it after about 4 tries. He was about 8 at the time. My #2 niece had to try it also at the time (she was maybe 5 at the time). She got it off the ground and almost made it around one time before dumping it. :-)
