RE: Do I want to build a Carden?
my $.02.....you won't regret building a Carden. Nothing flies better than a kit-built plane....and there are no better kits out there than Carden. Everything from placing your order, to packaging, delivery, and assembly is first-rate. Dennis will talk to you as much as you need to get you through any tough spots.....but if you've done any building before and are comfortable following a set of plans, you won't have any trouble at all. They aren't any more complicated to build than a Sig Kadet......just a bunch of sticks. Go for it! Then post pics of your progress!

RE: Painting
I tried the Nelson paints awhile back, but cant say I'd recommend them. I had color match problems with almost every color...(orange, true red, royal blue, and even white)....also they just don't have the "wet" look of a good automotive type paint....

RE: BBW Yak 32%
Yup....i currently own both....flew them both a bunch over the summer....and loved 'em both. The Yak is about a pound heavier than the 260. My 260 ended up a few oz over 27lbs...the yak about 28 1/2. both with cans. I flew the yak most of the summer on standard mufflers...without the cans it was the same weight as the 260. Both have DA100s and Vess props. They both fly very similar. I think the 260 is a little easier to build than the Yak.......other than that...pick the one you like the looks of the most. They both fly great!

RE: Cuda motor box
I think I'm having trouble fully understanding the problem. If all you've glued together so far is the firewall, the motorbox sides, and the back plate....and maybe the landing gear block....there's really not a lot keeping the motorbox sides parallel at this point. I would imagine the assembly is still very flexible at this point. If the wing tube, back-plate and firewall are all parallel and perpendicular to the building surface, then you should still be able to pin each surface to its location on the plans and just flex the MB sides the little bit they need to go where they should. Once you glue on the bottom pieces of the motorbox, the assembly should stiffen right up. Once the wing tube is glued in, that will also stiffen and align the motorbox sides. If I understand the problem correctly, then I don't think you need to build in any kind of correction at all at this point other than to make sure the motorbox lines up with the plans when you attach the fuse sides and glue on the bottom/top pieces of the MB. ....and Albert, a 50cc'er!? Is this gonna be your new IMAC bird? :D

RE: BIG BIRDS at TORKS
Ha! yea, the edge had a rough day....one of the wheels fell off on landing.....the landing gear dug in and it nosed over breaking the prop and bending the muffler. Thanks for the compliment on my Yak...that was it's 4th flight ever. :D So far it's flying great!

RE: carden 35% 260 liftoff
you know...i bet you could move the 2 bottom trusses up an inch or two and build a balsa tunnel under them and you wouldn't lose any strength...you'd still have to cut the foam bottom deck out to fit around the tunnel, but that could be blended pretty easy. I say go for it! I'm running a 27x10 NX prop on mine....i didn't tach it....don't care any more....all i know is it's got what feels like an insane amount of power and it floats like nothing I've flown before. I'll say this...I'm at a little over 27lbs (3-4oz) with cans. I weighed the can setup and the stock muffs and I know i can knock out 20oz of weight by switching to stock muffs. I think I'd give up 300rpms well before I'd give up over a lb in weight!

RE: carden 35% 260 liftoff
it could be done, but I think the pipes would be exposed behind the motorbox. I don't think there's 2.5" clearance between the bottom truss work and the bottom foam deck. You'd have to notch out the foam pretty good, sheet the bottom of the truss structure and basically build a 3-sided box. Done right, it could look pretty cool! Carden's don't use formers, its all 3/8 sq balsa stick...and you really don't want to modify or leave any out...

RE: Optical kill Switch
gotta agree with the other two here....love my smart-fly optical kill switch...stupid-simple and reliable! No more mechanical ign. switch...just the cut-off....now one fail-safe switch controls the entire plane! Can't get any simpler than that!

RE: Quick Release canopy for Carden 35% Extra
I did it on a 35% 330 I built a few years back. I used the graupner hatch latches mentioned above...bought them from hobby lobby. I glued the latches to the side rails of the hatch, with the lever sticking through the rail...glued in some hardwood blocks in the turtle deck to mesh with the latch pins in the hatch. The front of the hatch has a couple of dowls that key into the front of the fuse like normal. I flew the crap out of that plane before I sold it and never had a problem with the hatch...could pop it on and off in just a couple of seconds....worked great! I haven't done it on anything since, but really wish I had.

RE: 40% 260 on a Diet
:D sure, I'll bite. I'm working on a 35% 260 that's at nearly the same stage as your pics and it currently weighs 2lbs 13oz. So I'll guess the 40%'er being a little longer and wider is maybe 8-12oz heavier. Sooo... 3lbs 5oz-9oz. :D How far off am I??

RE: Extra 300 Prototype #2
ORIGINAL: CAPtain232 I would definitely agree that the broken L bracket will cause a complete failure. The screw through the stab tube would be located on the pivot point and would not be able to hold up against the torque created from the air blowing the stab up to a verticle position.
I don't think anyone is saying the L bracket WON'T cause failure if it's the ONLY anti-rotation method used. I think what others have tried to convey is if a simple wood dowel is added to the root of the stab, the L bracket is no longer the only point holding the stab in place. The screw through the stab tube is just to keep the stab from sliding off the tube. The dowel prevents the stab from rotating around the tube....same function as the L bracket.m It's a simple modification that adds very little weight....IMO, it should be added to the plans as at least an optional method of locating the stab on the fuse.

RE: Extra 300 Prototype #2
determining the "why" would definitely be nice...but I suspect that will never be known....sometimes things just go bad...it happens. ....but, I do feel the same as you paf....something "else" lead up to the L-bracket failing and the AR pin ripping out. Under normal conditions, each on it's own is capable of supporting the stab. Even IF the bracket managed to break on its own in flight...the AR pin should have held the stab in place as long as there was a bolt in the stab tube to prevent the stabs from sliding off. regardless...on with the build!! I'm anxious to see one of these 300's finished!! :D

RE: 40% 260 on a Diet
28lbs is a lofty goal no doubt! With the mods already shown in the pics it seems someone has done at least a little homework to determine the final goal. I haven't seen anyone else get anywhere near this agressive on reducing weight! Personally, I hope he meets it!! I'm looking forward to watching this one take shape. I'm sure there will be lots of ideas I can mooch and possibly use in future projects of my own. :D I vote everyone should just stand back and let this guy show us what he's got!! :D

RE: Extra 300 Prototype #2
no dispute here either....no doubt about what you witnessed... the only piece that doesn't make sense in my mind is what difference a ply tabs makes vs. a plastic L bracket. The ply tabs will without doubt fail before the stock brackets if any side loads are present....but there be no side-loads on the tabs/l-brackets when everything is fully assembled......6 of one half-dozen of another as far as I can figure. All flight loads trying to rotate the stab around the tube should be carried by the AR pin and the tube....which is what you show in your pic. The bolts in the ends of the tubes and in the ply tabs are just redundant methods of keeping the stabs from sliding off the tube. It's exactly the same way on the wings only the bolts run inside-out instead of outside-in. Walt even mentions this in the 300 build thread...enlarged the holes for the DA stubs so alignment is handled entirely by the AR pin....the studs just keep the wing from sliding off. No big deal...I think everybody agrees the stock method needs minor improvement... Great build-thread Rob....your 300 is looking great....can't wait to see more!

RE: Extra 300 Prototype #2
I think an extra dowel in the stabs is all that's really needed to solve any questions over whether the plastic L brackets will hold up. Aeroworks setup their older kits with a AR pin and a bolt through the ends of the tube only and those seemed to hold up fine...I've seen several with many many seasons on them with no problems. We trust the wings to a simple AR pin and a couple small bolts to hold them to the fuse...no reason it won't work just as well on the stabs. With a bolt in the tubes, a dowel in the root, and root tabs or L-bracket....there are no structural worries if built correctly.

RE: AFPD and Windows Vista
AFPD runs on Vista perfectly....I've been running it for a few weeks. The biggest problem I had was finding an OpenGL compatible video card driver that works reliably on Vista. Give the HW mfgs some time to release drivers....by the time Vista goes GA, this shouldn't be an issue anymore.
