RE: New ignition
I bought one some months ago, and put it on my 40cc Sthil conversion. It seems to work OK, but i guess the lack of shielding can be a problem in some setups. It makes a good spark, and seems to work fine, but i have not done much testing yet , i just cheked my engine will start and run. It seems it lacks control of timing, i can not see any microcontroller inside. The electronics inside is mostly covered with some black epoxy, so there can be components not visible..

RE: Clancy StaggerBee plans
Yes it is the extended wing version. The .91 works very good inverted. The tires is DuBro 6 inch inflatabeles. They is just right on the LazyBee, but heavy - 600 grams. My LazyBee is lighter with floats than with wheels.

RE: Clancy StaggerBee plans
Some reports it flies OK, and some says it is awful. It is a very special plane, so i am still interested in giving it a try. If you can find the plans, please let me know. JM

RE: Clancy StaggerBee plans
A Magnum .91 4-stroke. It is perfect for this model - i tried a .64 4-stroke, but it was not enough. With the .91, it goes vertical and can hover.. More info on my homepage; [link=http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/big_lazy_bee.htm]http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/big_lazy_bee.htm[/link] And video here; [link=http://vmfk.com/Video/JMJ/LazyBee3.wmv]http://vmfk.com/Video/JMJ/LazyBee3.wmv[/link] I will build one more, with 140-150cm wingspan and brushless setup. I have scanned the plans, so it is easy to scale them to any size. JM

RE: Clancy StaggerBee plans
Yes, i know many others are looking for them. Have you built any other Clancy designs? I built 2 LazyBees, one normal 122cm, and one scaled-up 180cm. Both flies beautifully. I also built a SpeedyBee from my own plans, but it was not very good... JM

And how do you know i dont?. If a carburettor is not suitable for using in a converted engine (Toro), it will have to be replaced with another type. JM

RE: Choise of carburettor
No, but the original Toro carbs is no good, so the must be changed. The weedeater carb is a 1 needle thing, it works, but i guess i will get more power with a bigger carb. The 40cc carb is the oonly one i can use as it is. JM

Choise of carburettor
I have several engines to be converted; 3 Toro 25 double barrel 1 Toro 25 single barrel 1 Weedeater 21cc 1 Stihl 40CC I want to replace the carburettors on all engines, i dont want to mess with rebuild kits. I want all the 25cc and the 21cc to use the same type of carb. I guess the 40cc will need a bigger carb. I do not know much of carburettor models and numbers, so i want some input of what carbs i can use. It should be a well known type that is easy to set up, and with 2 needles. Thanks.

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
This is a new version of the CDI. The PIC is changed to a 16F628, and will be changed to a 16F88 soon. The 16F88 is the best 16X PIC yet, lots of new possibillities, and an internal osc at 8 Mhz. The 16F84 is outdated, and i guess we will not work more on the code for it. The code is totally rewritten, and is now in C, and there is a new Excel sheet to manipulate the curve. Nothing of this is released on the net yet, as it is still very much under construction. The code works, and has been run on a real engine, but there are some bugs yet. The hardware is also modified (by Bigboat), and under construction, but the new code/PIC16F88 will work on the old hardware with some modifications. When this will be released is not decided yet, we have done a lot of work on the new CDI in the last month, but right now we have a little break... For now, use the old code and the old schematics.

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
Bigboat, you have done great work on the CDI. What is the current status of your work? Have you actually run the CDI on a real engine, and if so - how did it do? What about the curve - did you have to make it reversed? I am sorry for not having contributed to the project lately - i got a bit tired of it and put it aside for a while. I still have not run my Stihl 41cc, i have to make a mount for the carburettor, and for the pickup. I will try to do some work on this in the next weeks. Regards, Jon-Magne

RE: Slowpoke .15 w/ailerons
How well do the ailerons work? I built a second wing with ailerons for mine, and it was very good, but i made a scaled down wing from the Slowpoke 40 drawings. I use a SC25 in mine, and it need a lot of nose weight. With a MDS40 it balanced on the spot, but it was no sucess since the MDS is a crap engine... Regards, Jon-Magne Johansen

Toro 25 prop hub
I am converting 4 Toro 25cc engines. I do not have a lathe, so I need to buy the prop hubs from someone. On eBay i found this prop hub, but I am a little vorried if it has good enough contact with the flywheel. The only part toching the flywheel is the back of the hub, but the diameter is rather small. Has anyone tried this, and how do you make your hubs?

Stihl 023C conversion
Has anyone converted a Stihl 023C chain saw engine? It looks very much like a Homelite 45cc. I found some data on the net; 1,9KW / 2.6 hp 40,2 cm3 It seems to be an easy conversion, except for the carb mount. I will use a regular aluminium engine mount, and a CH ignition. Jon-Magne

RE: Flywheel - is this safe?
[quote]Can I try it on the bench with out balancing it?[/quote] Yes you can. If you just remove/cut the fins, and you remove about the same amount of material on oposite sides, you should be fine, at least to do a test run. To get it perfect, you should balance it. Jon-Magne

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
[quote]What programer do you recomend for programing the PIC? [/quote] I use a ProPic programmer. Very reliable, but obsolete. You should choose a programmer that supports the new PIC's, as the 16F84 is very old. I guess the code will run on the 16F628 without any modifications, i would like to try that when the CDI is stable. Diablo_r: Try different values for the SCR resistor R6. To high value causes the SCR to lock in 'on' position. Jon-Magne

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
[quote]ORIGINAL: diablo_r I just used a transistor to switch the hall froma 0v to a +5v signal, then the pot, then to the gate of the SCR. I put an LED in too to use for static ign timing. [/quote] Can you upload a drawing of how this is connected? That should help Ben_C out, se earlier post. Also, i know the dechex macro is a pain, it is different in my norwegian version, too. Maybe i will rewrite the sheet, so it can do without the macro. Please also note the updates to my web, i got the new schematics from my co-developer, Jorge (aalbea), so i have put it all on the web. There is also links to the datasheets of all components used. Regards, Jon-Magne

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
[quote]ORIGINAL: Ben_C I built a high voltage board which worked OK - though my voltmeter recorded between 500V-600V from 6V input. I had a few odd behaviours with the SCR triggering the spark: the spark would trigger, but only start to recharge when I earthed the trigger. [/quote] Reduce the value of R6 from 1K to 240ohm, and it should be OK. The SCR need to be triggered quite 'hard' when it is switching high voltages. This has a bad side effect - a hall device can not source enough current to trigger it directly. It also place a big load on the output on the PIC, so maybe a transistor buffer will be a good idea. RE: Opensource CDI ignition
R9 and R11 is not used, and should be left out. The 7805 and its associated components is not needed, either. These components is some leftovers from the previous design, and is not on the new PCB. A new schematic will be uploaded soon, where these components are removed. Jon-Magne

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
C6 is a electrolytic capasitor of 4.7uF/16V. Obviously an error in the parts list, sorry. If you get 600V, at least the high voltage board is OK. This is a new record, the most i have got is 350V. If it sparks by itself, it sounds like you have activated the test function, or have a problem with the PIC. Try removing the wire bridge between the 2 parts of the board, and see if it stops. The wire in the pictures is thicker than 0.1mm, it is not a picture of my torroid. I used 0.1mm, but it is not important. Jon-Magne

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
Yes, probably. But i do not want to use 'exotic' components. I will need to make a filter by using diodes/capacitors/resistors. The whole idea of this project is to keep it simple and low cost. Jon-Magne

Opensource CDI ignition
As some of you aleready know, i have a CDI project on my [link=http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/cdi_ignition.htm]homepage[/link]. Tonight i have made a big update to the pages, so please have a look at it. Some info of my CDI: -Runs from a normal 4.8V RX battery -Programmable advance curve -Built from easy to find parts -Integrated strobe light, using a hi intensity LED -Integrated test function - no need for a signal generator -The advance control can be separated from the PCB and be used to upgrade other CDI's without advance control -Low part count -Can use a homemade coil The CDI is tested and works, but there is still an issue with noise from the high voltage board reaching the advance board. This should not be too hard to fix. This project is totally open source, all the info you need can be downloaded from my pages. I get a lot of email about this project, so it may be better to use this forum to share problems and ideas. My homepage is at: [link=http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/cdi_ignition.htm]http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/cdi_ignition.htm[/link] Regards, Jon-Magne Johansen

RE: home made coils for CDI and kettering ign's?
Skazoo, which schematics are you using? I have not seen one powered by a single cell. I have not made my coils in sections, i know i probably should, but have no problem, yet.. One coil i made had wire with a very thin layer of insulation, it was no good, i could hear the spark inside the coil. The other 3 i made is fine, so far. Jon-Magne

I just made another coil, this time from an 220v/9v transformer, used 50 turns on the primary. It works, but seem a bit less powerful than the other two i made. Jon-Magne

RE: home made coils for CDI and kettering ign's?
I have sent you a mail with all the info needed. The CDI has auto adwance, and a programmable ignition curve. It uses a PIC microcontroller, and the curve can be modifyed in a Excel sheet, and then put into the PIC program. Jon-Magne

RE: home made coils for CDI and kettering ign's?
I have made a page with details of the coil on my [link=http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/homemade_coil.htm]homepage[/link], You should find all info you need there. The CDI is from the design on my web. It is an open source design, but i have not put the latest version on my page yet. It has programmable delay, a nice test function, as you see on my cideo clip, and uses no special componens. RE: home made coils for CDI and kettering ign's?
I just made 2 coils from some old transformers. It took some trial and error, but the end result was good. The spark is just as good as on my CH ignition coils, and the weight is the same, about 40 grams. The size is also about the same as my CH coil. I have tested a lot of different ratios, and several ways to wind it, and this is my best results; Primary: 100 turns of 0,8 mm wire Secondary: A LOT of turns of very thin wire. I did not count, but the layer of wire was about 5 mm thick. A short clip of it running is here: [link=http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/Coil.wmv]Coil clip[/link] The images show the final coil, and a side by side comparison with a CH coil. I will write a description of how to make the coil later. Jon-Magne

RE: Scratch Built Ignition???
I made my first prototype of a CDI ignition today, from parts cannibalised from an old UPS. It is based on the RCM schematics, but i made some changes to make it fit the components i used. I put some info/pictures on my web; [link]http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/cdi_ignition.htm[/link] Sorry for the crude construction - i will make a PC board when i have the electronic advance system finished. There is no schematics yet, all i have at this time is a hand-made schematic. I will put the schematics on the web next week.
