RE: Micko P-47: build
Finally got this plane in the air last weekend. It flew great !!!! Took off easily with only about 1/2 throttle. Kept the gear down and tested the flaps and they worked well with almost zero input from the elevator needed. I flew around at less that half throttle all the flight and landed after 6 minutes. Checked the batteries and still had 70% left. Looks like I should be able to get about 12 minutes at moderate throttle settings and 10 at high speeds. Not sure that airframe will withstand full throttle [:D] Landing was easy and slow. Love how this plane flys!!!!! Setup: Motor: Rotomax 50 cc (5300 watts / 5.5 HP) ESC: Turnagy 200 amp Battery: 2 x 6S 8000 mah Zippy 30c packs (in series) Prop: 24-12 Gear: Sierra Jeff

RE: New Air Force Demo Team is this the future??
And you really only need one pilot in the lead drone as you can put them in swamp mode and they will follow each other [:D] I would not attend those air shows. There is something about the raw power of those big piloted planes that's hard to replace using a wimpy fuel efficient drone. Jeff

I don't think you can call a Tomahawk a drone. It cannot return to base [:D] It is highly accurate, but not a drone that can stay on station and is can perform recon, support and attack missions. Jeff

Make sure you add a bunch of down thrust in the motor. Mine and another guy at our field both had to add lots to get it to fly level. Also you don't need much throw on the elevator as it's very large. Jeff

So far it's mostly the Air Force and Army. I think it will be a while before the Navy gives up it's pilots. Can't wait to see the remake of Top Gun with the drone nerds in the bar trying to pick-up women [;)] The volley ball scene would be funny too [:D] Jeff

RACJ is correct. It won't run on 6S. You need 8S or 9S for it to run properly. It will move, but not properly and that sounds like what you are experiencing. Jeff

I had a couple of these in the past and loved them. I had a Texan and Mustang and flew the wings off those planes. Pretty cool design with the foam and plastic covering. Would love to get some again. Jeff

Ram, I have the Rotomx 50 cc in my Micko P-47. It puts out over 5000 watts or 6.6 HP. I haven't flown it yet, but it should hover. It will swing a 25-12 prop [:D] It's a good choice for a motor and I have two 6S 8000 mah packs in the plane so I should get some decent flight times too. If the weather holds this weekend I hope to get a first flight on it. Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
I lost four very nice planes from "lock outs" caused by low voltage or bad connections. All the planes were a total loss and the receivers were fine once they were powered back up. This was several years ago and were some of the first that I knew of in my area. I worked with someone out here that helped develop Spektrum technology and we found if took 3 over 15 seconds for the receiver to reboot after this occured. We test dozens of new receivers and they all had this problem. Soon after they came out with "quick connect" which eliminated the problem (for me at least) and I haven't had any issues since then. I was ready to change radios and start a law suit against them at the time [;)] Fortunately both Spektrum and Horrizon both were very responsive and addressed the issues in a timely maner. Jeff

Tony, Do any of your controls "lock up" when you power down and back on? If they do then you need the newer software (Quickconnect) which will eliminate the brown-out caused reboots. Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
Try and test the receiver to see if you have quick connect on it. If you drop power for a moment while moving the sticks you shouldn't see more than a second or less of the servos not moving when the power is disrupted. This will help eliminate that part of the problem, then you can focus on other factors. Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
Unless you are very near a large military installation I doubt you would see any issues. Remember most home corless phones (older ones) are running on 2.4 and they never have any problems. The source has to be very close, strong and broad to affect the Spekrum system. Loose connections, switch, battery all far more likely. ... IMO Jeff

If you are using a switch for the battery pack that was one of the most common problems with mine and others. Take it out of the plane and see if it's fixed. Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
I am sure most everyone that flew on 72 mhz had "glitches". When you get a "glitch" on 2.4 the receiver needs to reboot (the old DSM) and with the newer software it just holds on the last two good frequencies instead of a reboot so you really don't see the glitch like you did with 72 mhz radios. I have had some people in the military test my 2.4 stuff and they were only able to get the signal interupted at very close ranges, so it you have another strong 2.4 transmitter close (full spectrum) it may interfer, but chances are it's something else. These guys were hitting the receivers with some pretty stong jamming devices and could only get them to interfere at close ranges (under 100 yards). Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
Tony, Are you using DSM receivers or the newer ones with DSM2 or DSX? I thought mine were from some other interference source, but they weren't and were all caused by a brief pull down or disruption of power from the ESCs BEC. Some recovered in-flight some crashed. I tested about 20 new receivers and they all has delays to "re-boot" after brown outs of 4-13 seconds. Good luck and hope you figure things out. Jeff

That's so funny ! Saw them "searching" a poor old guy in a wheel chair that had shrapnel (in head) and pins in his leg from WWII and they had to run him through the scanner and wand him and then do it again. He could barely stand while they did this. Poor guy was like 85 or 90 YO and was very nice, but not happy with them. His wife was pretty pi$$ed though [:D] Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
The best way I found to check them is to hook up a switch on the power to the receiver and hook up one servo and turn on the power. Start moving the servo with the transmitter and keep it moving while you switch off the power then right back on and see how long it takes for the servo to start moving again. If it's less than a second or two then it has the quick connect, otherwise you need to upgrade or replace. Jeff

RE: Hot off the Press
It could be worse... our police department stopped responding to burglar alarms (residental and business). And our sheriff department will not issue carry permits anymore either as they are "re-drafting" their policy. Our airport TSA are terrible and did a hand wipe of me while in line, then another agent asked to do a hand wipe again. I told them someone just did that and they went postal and were ready to haul me away, but fortunately the lady that did the first one said "I already got him". No appologies and he just walked away like nothing happened. I love airports. Great place to be a criminal [:o] Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
Are you running a seperate flight pack (LiPo pack) on a BEC or is it supplied from your ESC? My problems happened when I was using the ESC for my receiver power and started using retract servos. The retract servos pulled the voltage down for a split second and caused the brown outs. If you have the new receivers with DSM2 or higher with quick connect you don't have that problem. Jeff

RE: Brownouts, first time
Probably something pulled the voltage below the minimum (which varies a little) 3.4 - 3.8 volt will drop it. You need to be using DXM2 or DSM2 receivers so you get the quick connect feature that minimizes the problems with low voltage brownouts. Jeff

Great, let us know how is goes! I have been flying mine a lot and it flies great now. I don't know how much it weighs, but would guess it's well under 10 lbs. Carefull with the throws as you don't need much especially on the elevator. It's pretty sensitve on that surface. Lands very slow and easy. You might want to add some wing tip skids on yours as mine did scrape them up a little. I have added them on mine now and it's much better on those cross wind landings. Jeff
