RE: WACO YMF
Nelson hobby paint is still available it is a very tough acrylic urethane (water based) paint. A lot of people have used it on competition aircraft and have been very satisfied. Alot of colors available as well as clear. No odor and dries to glow fuel proof. I know several people who claim to have applied it with foam brushes and it will appear to be sprayed. The company was sold by the original owner Jerry Nelson due to health. I believe John Deselet now owns it and moved it from Texas to Oregon. The site is still www.nelsonhobby.com check it out great products although not as many as when Jerry had the company. Larry WB 183

RE: WACO YMF
Polycrylic is gas proof but not glow proof. My test piece shows a little bit of alcohol and some rubbing has it peeling up. The product is made by Minnwax and can be purchased at most hardware and home stores. The biggest use I have seen of this product is to seal the koverall fabric instead of using nitrate dope. It is water based and so no harsh fumes. Maybe someone out there has had different results using it on alcohol fuel but I would not. I would stick to a Urethane clear coat or possibly epoxy which can be put over just about any paint if the paint is dry and the clear is sprayed not brushed. Be aware most latex paint takes a very long time to fully dry. I personally have not used epoxy in a long time. You can also build it like the real one with about 17 coats of dope hand sanded between each coat, for the purist. Larry WB 183

RE: WACO YMF
Fibertech has the correct cowl for a YMF with a Jacobs engine, they are evenly spaced blisters. The other company has the UMF cowl with paired blisters. There is some confusion here as the Waco kit plans make a UMF cowl for the YMF shown. There is a whole story there that I will not get into. If you want to build the YMF then your choice is Fibertech and More or build your own. Hope this helps Larry WB 183

RE: WACO YMF
John, is it a fiberglass sheet that is bonded from the leading edge to the forward spar, inboard of the wingtip bow sheeting? I think that may be where he got confused. In your third photo it looks like fabric was strecthed over the leading edge which would leave the ribs showing through the fabric. Fiberglass sheet would hold the leading edge smooth but still look like fabric in the photo. Just food for thought Larry

RE: WACO YMF
Thanks for the kind words John. That picture was taken before I added the dummy engine. Anyway dead engine and stalled wing ment I had to build another cowl for this plane it is in progress now. Of course it will have the Jacobs YMF spacing on the cowl bumps with the continental dummy engine when I am done. I recieved a photo cd from Hank, great photos. I plan to build another and incorporate more of what he sent me into it. Very nice guy. Thanks Larry

RE: WACO YMF
Try using a wieghted spinner nut, placing the wieght as far forward as possible, means less wieght overall. By using a Harry Higley wieghted spinner nut I only needed 2 more ounces on the firewall on my 1/5 scale. It also looks more scale than the stock engine prop nut on the front. Larry WB 183

Robert a few post back you showed your landing gear fairings, and the flexibility of them, you stated you are not using epoxy. I probably should know what product you are using with the tolulene hint but for some reason it is failing me. Could you let me know what product you are using, maybe a pm if worried about the brand name. Your Waco is looking awsome and I really like the fairings. Thanks Larry WB 183

RE: WACO YMF
Check the scalemasters site for a guide line it is in the PDF fliles on competition guide. For scale contest the plane type UPF, YMF etc. Needs to match the plane you are modeling otherwise you will recieve downgrades. Even slight differences such as a UMF cowl on a YMF is caught and downgraded. Best to pick one that matches the kit you are building from the start, and make everything as close as possible to the subject you are modeling. Hope this helps here is the link to the scalemasters site. www.usscalemasters.org/ Larry WB 183

Bill I was going to download some templates from House of moy. I am having trouble connecting, I get does not exist errors most of the time. When it does connect it seems to be a blank page. Do you or anyone else know if the site is having problems, or has it been given up? I know sites with .com do not give out notices of renewal very well. Any help would be appreciated. RE: WACO YMF
Airplane Geek For non functional flat flying wires Nick Ziroli came up with a very nice looking way to make them with chrome colored plastic lace. The result is very realistic. It is however non functional, but the Pica Waco's were designed not to need the wires. The only link I know of is below, it was written by model airplane news. It only gives a brief description, I think you will get the idea. Maybe some of the other brothers will know where the full article is. By the way awsome model, very nice job on the gold trim. http://www.modelairplanenews.com/Me2/dirmod.asp?sid=F9EC56519617482FAB4AC20870CA26EC&nm=Main&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=13B2F0D0AFA04476A2ACC02ED28A405F&tier=4&id=86D4B908EA874243B3248FFB3370345F Larry WB 183

For the 1/6 scale try the 125 slim wing servo with metal gears or 5125 for the digital version. I have been using these for years and they fit in very thin airfoils. I have never had a failure. Larry WB #183

RE: WACO YMF
Okay lets try this. This is my first attempt to post photos on this forum, please forgive me if they do not come out right. This is my Waco, I have flown it several times now and it just gets better each time. I really wish I had found this thread earlier in the build, there is so much I would change. Oh well save that for the next one. This is the 1/5 Pica kit handed down through a lot of hands until I got ahold of it. I purchased it for $100.00 the fuselage was framed, but done badly. I cut most of it apart and started over. The model has a Saito 100 for power which fits in the cowl nicely. The model flies very well, with this setup. I did have to add a weighted spinner but that was the only additional weight added. The overall weight is 13 pounds minus fuel. I like so many others here love my Waco

John, thanks for the info on NC 14031, I am always looking for information on the original subject. Just to add to the history of the plane in my documentation. I will post pictures of my model soon, and after a few more landing practices I will install the wheel spats and finish the plane for competition. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on this amazing aircraft. Larry WB #183

RE: WACO YMF
Skylark, 14031 was the subject I chose to model. When I looked up the NC number it list it as a YMF, UMF. I could never find out when the Continental was installed making it the UMF model. It appears it was during restoration. Which was great for me since I made the UMF cowl from the Pica kit. Do you happen to know when the Continental was added? Also according to the photos I have the red accent was added during restoration, photos that I have before restoration do not seem to have the red accent. After the restoration it is very prominent. RE: WACO YMF
Good morning Brotherhood. I would like to toss my hat in the ring for the Brotherhood. I have completed my 1/5 Waco and had a successful maiden. Even with the crosswind that crept up at our field. I must admit I am addicted now and looking forward to building another one. A little about my Waco, it is a 1/5 Pica I picked it up from a friend who was selling it for a friend who passed away. I paid $50 for the partially built kit. The fuse was framed but was badly done. The rest was still in the box. I cut out the offending parts on the fuse and rebuilt it using this forum as a guide. For power I installed a Saito 100 swinging a 16X4 APC. It flies very scale. I found so much useful information here I have been telling everyone who is interested in my plane, to check the forum. I have a lot of scale features on my Waco as I intend to use it for scalemaster qualifiers in my area. The test flight was pleasantly uneventful, it just simply does what you tell it with no complaints or bad habits. It is a dream to fly. Anyway I would love to be part of the Brotherhood since I am now addicted, and will be building another one with more scale features. Thanks Larry

RE: WACO YMF
Okay I will take a stab at this. I have been lurking in the shadows for sometime now. I have been building the quarter scale Barth Spad, and I feel your pain on this kit. Although they are excellent kits some times they are difficult to interpret. My thoughts are the holes are to mount the turnbuckles, however they are not attached with sheet metal screws. The sheet metal screws and the aluminum plates go on the wing mount for the cable attachment. The two holes in the alloy plate align with the 594 backing plates. Okay the turnbuckle ends need to be mounted in the location of the two holes on your bulkhead. There should be in the parts package two standoffs and two machine screws with nuts and washers, these would go through the bulkhead with backing plates and through your turnbuckles. If you do not have the parts they would be easy to fabricate, generally in the kits I have built the turnbuckles are mounted on the same plane and sometimes the wires do touch. However if you adjust the standoffs slightly so they do not touch, it would not hurt anything. You will need the standoffs at the bulkhead so you can adjust them. If they are tight against the bulkhead they are difficult to turn, and install safety wire. This is how I would approach this task. Maybe one of the brotherhood has already tackled this and has another solution. Larry
