RE: Racing my tornado epx pro
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner I used the lightning's body posts as battery posts. they are really tall, so you can cut them to the hight needed for your lipo pack. I also removed the 2 bumps on the bottom, and added a lexan shield to the side of the chassis. velcro strip on the chassis and battery doesnt hurt either. will keep the battery from getting thrown out of the vehicle (ive had it happen!)
Okay, thanks. I've ordered some Lightning body posts. I guess if I remove the outer 2 of the 4 battery supports, the side of the chassis will keep the battery from moving around too much especially if I add the strip of velcro as you suggested.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
Did you have to make any mods to the car to fit that battery in? The stock battery mount is tight on the width and the height.
ORIGINAL: red603 The only thing I have done to mine in the 3 days I have owned it was go to a 2s 5200 40c bat and glue my tires onto the rims. Fast car I cant wait to take it around the track. Anyone had any durability issues?
RE: Racing my tornado epx pro
Has anyone designed or found a different way to hold the battery in a Tornado EPX? I bought a Turnigy hard case lipo, and I had to widen the car's 4 battery supports, and the 2 posts are barely tall enough. Now I'm looking at getting another battery, but the new battery is a little wider and taller. It's longer too, but there seems to be plenty of room for longer.

RE: HobbyKing Orange DSM2 compatable receiver
I have two more on order. Hopefully they'll be good. The three that I have now I got in May and June, so I think it's too late to return them.

RE: HobbyKing Orange DSM2 compatable receiver
I have three of these that I bought in the Spring this year. Haven't had much time to use them, but have always had trouble getting them to bind to my DX5e. I'd have to try binding a few times before being successful. Would lose bind once in a while and need a couple of tries again to re-bind. Dragged them out today to try again. Now I think it's a problem with too much signal at the receiver. Here's why. I got one of my receivers to bind after several tries. After binding I turned off the receiver and the transmitter and removed the bind plug. Turned on the transmitter and then the receiver. Linked up after a couple seconds, but then lost link (Rx LED turned back off). Turned receiver off. Put transmitter in low power mode and turned on receiver again. Linked up quicker. Released Tx trainer switch to return to full power. Lost link. Repeated that a few times with the same result consistently. Anyone else think there might be a problem with the Orange Rx receiver front end sensitivity? Jeff

A Tamiya Grashopper with Futaba Attack AM radio in the early 1980's. Still have it, but way back in the 80's the hard plastic body broke up and the car has a lexan body. Recent photo:

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
Not much traffic on this thread! Is there a better thread for the Tornado EXP Pro? Anyone replace the front steering arms with the blue aluminum ones? I bought a set for my Tornado EXP Pro, but when I tighten down the hub nut the bearings bind so bad the wheels won't turn. Had to put the plastic ones back in. Anyone successfully install the aluminum ones?

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
I put a 2S 30C LiPO in it and that solved the problem. It is blazingly fast on acceleration now. The 2000 mAh NiMH that came with the car just isn't good enough.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
Well, I can't test my theory about the battery yet because the folks from whom I ordered the new battery shipped the wrong one. In the meantime, has anyone else had problems like mine? Not able to make full-throttle starts have to ease onto the throttle to make the car run full-speed. Sometimes runs half-speed with full-throttle applied, and then after about 5 seconds of half-speed, it hesitates and then goes full-speed without me moving the throttle. On attempted full-throttle starts, car makes three or four surges and then finally takes off.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
Well, it turns out that this already has ball bearings. The wheels are a little sloppier than I would have thought with bearings. Maybe that will clean up when I get aluminum hub carriers.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
The wheels turn freely, although I'd like to put ball bearings in this car if I can ever figure out which ones to buy. I guess it's time to get an infrared thermometer :-) I've been looking at them for a long time. Thanks.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
I put a Spektrum SPM1600 receiver voltage protector on my receiver thinking that the receiver voltage droops under heavy throttle. That helped a lot. I get more run time, but I still can't make full throttle starts after the first couple of full throttle passes. I think that maybe the stock battery can't supply the heavy current for hard acceleration. I have a better battery on order, and I'll post after I get it. Thanks.

RE: *RedCat Racing Tornado EPX Thread*
Hi All. I just got a Tornado EXP Pro on Friday. I'm having a problem with short run time. I only get about 2 or 3 full-throttle passes up and down the street in front of my house before the car won't do a full-throttle start. In other words, after the 2 or 3 passes, I have to accelerate the car slowly. If I punch it, it does not move. It doesn't look like the ESC is overheated, I think the ESC manual says that one of the LEDs will blink if overheated. I changed the cut-out voltage setting on the ESC to "none". I replaced the receiver with a Spektrum revceiver so I can use my Spektrum radio, otherwise the car is stock. I'm charging the battery with a Duratrax ICE charger set to 6-cell NiMH and 2000 mAh. I've been through 4 charge/run cycles and it is still the same. The last time I ran the car today, I stopped when the car started acting up and put the battery on the charger's discharge. It discharged over 1000 mAh, half of the battery capacity. For those couple of high-speed passes, the car is really fast and fun. Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks.
