PT 1/2 A is ready Scamp (rascal with autogyro conversion) is ready! And my Twirl is dusty...but always ready! Auto-G (still in box)..ready for someone to buy if they want a quick fix! I'll grab a few plans and kits too. Remember, if you guys come out...I will sell the PCA-2 kits for $100.00 and I only have a few left. Jim, Mark, John, Don (skydanz) are all ready and Gary Pyles in St. Louis is promoting away! I know guys want to check out the local hobbystores. The two I want to check out is Shaefers and Mark Twain Hobby (links below). http://www.schaeferhobby.com/ http://www.hobby1.com/ So plug this into your GPS: 73 Amrein Road, St. Charles, MO 63303 Lat. 38.702006, Long. -90.577898 And we will see you guys soon! RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
Thanks John...your PCA-2 looks great! Let me know if you need any help with CG. Joseph.....post some pictures of your build here! I know there are a lot of parts, but I think you'll be amazed how fast the PCA-2 goes together...the short kit makes it much easier! Send me PMs or emails guys. It makes me smile when I see another guy airborn with their autogyro! You can even call me on my cell:402-651-0415 Joe

RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
Well I discussed it with the laser cutter and we both agreed that it wouldn't be worth the time invested to make all the changes and for me to support two sizes of the same model. Trust me....I would love to see someone try it though. I think it would be cooler to see a PA-18 1/4 scaled though! [8D] Joe

RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
O.K. Dave....just trying to catch up with your calculations! So the real PCA-2 had a wingspan of 360 inches and a blade span of 540 inches Our PCA-2 model has a 60 inch wingspan which makes it 1/6. If you noticed, we kept the blades 3 feet a piece which makes the blade span about 72 -74 inches. Technically the span would be 90" but we fudged the numbers because we have been working with the three feet blades. IF we decided to do this kit, I think the 1/5th would be ideal. 72 inch wingspan and 90 inch blade span (technically it would be 108" but I wouldn't go there). I think if you thickened the blades a tad and put a stronger wire on the leading edge you could make it happen. Instead of one plate in the middle, make it two 1/16 plates. 1/4 would be HUGE! The PCA-2 was the big daddy of autogyros which is why they didn't sell too many back in the 30's! And that's when the little ones came like the PA-18. The PA-18 is VERY similar to the PCA-2 (they actually swapped parts for the rotor system). So the question is this for everyone out here....are you looking for a bigger model or do you just want to build 1/4? If you want to build 1/4 then we could create a PA-18 just by changing the nose and tail (everything else is pretty well the same). The PA-18 was only 252" wingspan so 1/4 would be 63" wing! Just something to think about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitcairn_PA-18

RE: Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro by Whirlybird Aviation
I'm listening guys.....so 1/5 or 1/4th? Well holly cow Dave! I haven't gotten my calculator to figure out he sizes of 1/4 but you guys have to be nuts to build it that size! A 90" blade span would be big enough and hopefully wouldn't cause too many issues....hopefully! I'm sure we could figure out how to make it work. I'll talk to my laser cutter today! Joe P.S. I still think you guys are nuts! 72" wing! HA!

Yes....follow the plans. All the modifications have been made. That was about 4 years ago on those flights and safelandings, imsofaman and I were flying the prototypes back then. You'll be fine! Joe

RE: DAG 60 maiden flight
Well, I decided to keep this thread alive a little and amilcar some confidence! Here's some maidens of the DAG 60....remember, it only gets better after they are trimmed! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKshVvVJ8cc&feature=relmfu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvqdxgwhyw4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U4m2PuQSx8&feature=plcp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOS_TsZWTew It should be noted from these flights, CG and mast angle have been altered...so you have a head start amilcar! RE: LHS Rant!
This might have been said before, but internet really killed the LHS....but that's a different subject. I just went to my LHS....HobbyTown USA and they surprised me....I saw some top flight and sig kits still on the shelf. They said they sell fast during the winter time. My attic is stuffed full my kits.....some stafford kits, balsausa, sig, greatplanes. They sell well and are a good investment to have! Never know....I might build one too! Joe

RE: PT 25 E
Mark and John at flyingbalsa do an excellent job on setting up their models and telling you what throws you should have. The directions also on "take offs" are very good too. I learned to fly with a PT 1/2A autogyro (one of their first models) and have been flying it ever since! You'll love the way this thing flies! Got any pics guys?

RE: DAG 60 maiden flight
Yes sir! You've come to the right place. Joe with whirlybird here! The smaller DAG R1 is a little tricky to get off the ground even with the standard blades. We are now having luck taking fiberglass clear ducktape over the aerobalsa blades with some success with the G-10 triangular plate. But AB blades probably won't help you were because of the size of the DAG 60. First off, go with the triangular plate. It's easier to make and will flex better. And yes, shape those blades. It's very easy to do and perfection is not an issue here. They are not spinning 1800 rpms like a helicopter but balance is important. You can cheat by adding extra monocote if one blade is lighter. I've even used aluminum tape. Like I said, the DAG 60 flies better and is more stable. I've never had it do the roll left syndrome and since it was such a good flying machine, it became the base model for our PCA-2. What's amazing is the PCA-2 which has a wing, is about 3 pounds lighter! HA! Glad to see some activity on the autogyro forum again! Joe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l60GJ6zLxoc

Very nice to see another sig wonder out there. I had a sig wonder on just a OS .15 and it was plenty fast for me! I loved how it could loop on a dime! I have a Shrike now with a norvel .25....doesn't loop as fast but it's a bullet! Would love to see some pictures of the build! joe

RE: New kit for a Saito 56?
It seemed like it flew too much like a flat wing plane...the Taube that is. It flew like a GWS stick. I think I need to add some down thrust. The Pup flies like the rest of my planes. Predictable and fun. Also, I went electric on the taube which is great for looks, but it makes my flights pretty short. Joe

I built the Taube also....love the way it looks, hate the way it flies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvQ_7v_TTro Stick to the Pup...you'll be happy! Lots more room for your engine and it flies great! Now I fly it on low wind days and have a great time! ENJOY the build! Joe

RE: RE:
ORIGINAL: Rv7garage What changes between 3 and 4 blades?
I need a lot more down on the model, so you could do two things to make it work: add more down thrust or add more nose weight. Here's the problem with both those options: prop clearance! I feel the 3 blade cruises better no matter if their is wind or not....the forth blade makes it too floaty. Just my two cents. Joe

RE:
RV7Garage....I was looking at all the different radial engines out there and it seemed like the Saitos have the best choice for this model....keeping it close to 3 pounds and that .90 size range......however they are all 3 cylinders and I just don't think it would look right. I think you are better off getting a dummy radial and putting a four stroke in there. Just my two cents. Joe
