RE: SUPER JET SOUTH 2012
Just returned from the Fly for Tots event where George and Todd rolled out the mobile store. I think everyone will be impressed with their operation. They had everything I was shopping for from turbine oil to some esoteric festo fittings. It will be nice going to events, knowing Dreamworks will have your back if you need something to keep your plane operating. They will be at SJS and won't be hard to find with that mile long trailer. RE: A heads up/JR DSM upgrade
From the Spektrum Flight Log instruction sheet: Guidelines for DSM2 • An antenna fade represents a loss of a bit of information on that specific antenna. Typically, it’s normal to have as many as 50 to 100 antenna fades during a flight. • A frame loss represents simultaneous antenna fades on all attached receivers. If the RF link is performing optimally, frame losses per flight should be less than 20. • A hold occurs when 45 consecutive frame losses occur. This takes about one second. If a hold occurs during flight, it’s important to re-evaluate the system, move the antenna to a different location and/or check to make sure the transmitter and receivers are all working correctly. Guidelines for DSMX • Holds—Holds are unacceptable. If a hold occurs, please investigate and correct the issue before next flight. • Frames—<100- In conventional models during a 10 minute flight, frames should typically be less than 100 on all receivers. • Fades—Use Fades for comparison only. All attached receivers should have similar Fades. If not, investigate poorly performing receivers (location, antenna orientation, etc) and correct. Operational Differences between DSM2™ and DSMX® receivers while using the Flight Log: DSMX is frequency agile while DSM2 finds two quiet channels and remains on those channels. Consequently, because DSMX operates on quiet and noisy channels, it’s common to have more Antenna Fades and Frame Losses than when using DSM2 in busy 2.4GHz environments.

RE: A heads up/JR DSM upgrade
As you noted, you were operating in DSM2 mode when you bound your DSM2 only TX to the DSMX RX. The high fade counts on one satellite in this case would be a concern. Maybe check the extension wire and the integrity of the antenna wires, or move the satellite if these check ok. In DSMX mode the fade counts are higher because of the frequency hopping scheme, taking away that part of the data logger functionality.
ORIGINAL: Kelly W Good post Pete. If I upgrade, good to know this up front... Hey Guys, a quick question... When I set up a friend's jet, he had a DSM-X powersafe receiver and we bound it to my DSM-2 (not yet upgraded) 12X. Obviously it was running in DSM2 mode, but the faded count was ridiculous on one remote, even with my transmitter 6 ft away or so. I suppose this could have been covered in a thread elsewhere, but I haven't seen a definitive answer and a few have told me about similar experiences. Anyone understand why this issue occurs? I've been told by some that the fade count should just be ignored now, which is quite disappointing as it was a great health monitor for the R/C system. I've never experience a hold or failsafe, so the fade count was a really valuable number to watch in flight but particularly in a range test. Based on that I've stayed with DSM-2 for the time being, and just picked up a few powersafe 12ch spectrum receivers since the DSM-2 version is on a blowout safe. Great event as we can expect from this group. Everyone involved went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The venue could not be better and even when the wind kicked up to 10-15 and a direct cross, the runway was wide enough to encourage everyone to keep flying. See you guys in mid September at Fly for Tots.

From spektrum flight log instruction sheet. I will normally see 999 fades on one or two receivers in the Ultra using DSMX. However, I am comfortable with this as frame losses are usually in the zero to 10 range.

RE: Spektrum/JR CF receivers?
With DSMX, fades are no longer valid indicators of good or bad receiver placement. This is due to the addition of frequency hopping to the DSM architecture. If you have moved from DSM and are seeing higher frame losses using the same receiver placement, you could benefit using a carbon "satellite" or two to place the antennas further from carbon or metal components. I did this with a Powerbox Royal Spektrum setup in my flite metaled BVM F-100. Although it is a DSM system I saw very high fade numbers and higher than normal frame losses. Replacing two of the original receivers with the carbon receivers and placing the antennas outside the fuse, brought frame losses to more acceptable levels.

RE: NCs FIRST IN FLIGHT Jet Rally
This event has everything going for it. Good date, great venue, backing from the airport management and the city of Wilson, and organizers that really want everyone to enjoy the fly in. I know Larry and Mike put in a lot of time dating back to last year to improve the layout and think all will agree that it worked well this year. With over 90 registered participants, this has grown into the premier jet event on the east coast in only 2 years. I'll be back and should have no problem convincing the Georgia goobers to attend next year. I also want to thank Jet Central and Eric for receiving the Award of Excellence, and especially what goes with the Award, namely free use of any Jet Central turbine for a year. The Mammoth will be motivating the Ultra Bandit beginning this weekend!
