Floats for Seniorita
I have a set of lightweight fiberglass floats that I believe would work with my Seniorita: They are 32" long and 4 1/2" wide on the bottom. They are made by P&B Model of Czech Republic which I bought through H.L. Very light weight and although the normal length should be around 33.5", I don't see why they wouldn't work as Senioritas are light anyway. Power is a Scorpion 3014-1080 on 3S pack...plenty of power so that shouldn't be an issue.

RE: Fokker Eindecker 90 by Balsa USA ?
I built the .40 size Eindecker and bought the 1/6 scale Pup. Considering the .90 size Eindecker and several other BUSA kits: North Star, Thomas Morse Scout, Bristol M-1 and maybe either the D-VIII or D-VII in 1/4 scale. I would like to see a 1/6 D-VII though. That would be fun and easily done with electric. Visited their shop a few years back when Ron Busch was still alive ( although he did not look good then) and they treated the group I was with....9 other club members, like royalty even gave us some parting gifts. Now that's what I call good customer relations! I bought my Eindecker kit then. They are great people to work with and always have time for your questions and BTW no voice mail.

RE: Best Kits
Having built a number of Sig kits which include 2-LT-40s, 2 Senioritas, Kougar, Citabria, 4* 60, 1/5 scale Cub (still in process) and I still have the DO 217 to build but wait, I still want to build an Astro Hog, Kadet Senior for float flying, any of the 4* group and maybe even the Hog Bipe. I like building Sig kits, but having built the Balsa USA Focker E III .40 size, I bought a 1/6 Sopwith Pup. Now looking at other BUSA kits. Their die cutting is as good as any and better than others. The parts fell out of the sheets without any tearing or slivers. Very clean and crisp die cutting. The plane was fun to build. On the opposite end I built a Global Beaver which had many flaws in the die cutting with parts being cut undersize wrong balsa used, crunched edges and the usual host of problems. I also had problems with a G.P. .40 Cub as the dies cut parts were not crisp and clean and some would not fit together properly. Of course since then I have not built another G.P. kit nor do I care to. I've built a number of laser cut kits without problems although some seem to have a higher parts count than would normally be found in a die cut kit. The Sky Shark Hawker Tempest I purchased at Toledo Show looks good as it was laser cut but the entire airframe requires sheeting. Oh yeah, don't forget about RBC kits.... cnc machine cut, but the parts need a touch of sanding to clean them up.....built the Focke Wulf 190 and although it went together fairly well in spite of poorly written construction manual, the airframe looks quite nice for a small scale aircraft. So I would go along with what others are saying.....buy what you like but do pay attention to those who have some experience with kits under their belts. My faves are Sig and BUSA but that's just my choice and it may not be yours. Happy building!

RE: Guillows planes ?
Personally, I wouldn't even look at a Guillows kit. They are all crap. Lousy wood, printed patterns that don't match and they are totally outdated. Not worth it in my book...total junk! If you want to build a small kit try Mountain Models, Manzano Laser Works, Radical RC, Warbird kits, Stevens Aeromodel just to name a few. You will be more than pleased with the outcome of the build. They all use CAD and laser cutting which make for an easier build with great flying characteristics. Don't buy Guillows crap.

RE: Great Planes Seawind Water Takeoff Tips
Sell the Sea Wind and find an Ace Sea Master kit either .40 size or the larger 120. You'll be much happier with one of these than wasting your time trying to get one of these pieces of junk from Great Pains to R.O.W. I've seen several people attempt to fly these and they are indeed a handful and in some cases , nearly impossible to ROW. Personally I wouldn't waste my time of that overpriced piece of Chinese made junk. Stay away from the Neptune from Maxford...another poorly constructed piece of Chinese made trash......almost non existent hot glue, poor control surface mechanics, wing attachment poorly done. Probably made by some 12 year old kids working 18 hours a day in a Chinese sweatshop for 25 cents an hour.

RE: Sig Seniorita Glow to Electric conversion info needed
I use a Scorpion 3014-1040 on mine. On a 3S pack it flies very well. On my ARF version I use the Scorpion 3020-850 and 3S pack with 12X6 prop. I tried a 4S pack but power was up to over 800 watts, clearly too much for this plane. So I stay with 3S set up.

RE: This should help bill requiring warrant for drones.
Warrant? What warrant. We don't need no steenkin' warrant! The (Un) Patriot Act provides for the use of unwarranted "sneak and peak" into our private affects. Once a government starts down the road to tyranny, there is no turning back. We cannot depend on a corrupt, lawless Supreme Court to protect our inalienable rights any longer. They, along with congress and the White House have sold us all out for a few pieces of silver. If anyone here seriously believes this is all being done to protect us from terrorists then you need to turn off the television and start thinking for yourself instead of letting some bloviated blowhard such as Rush Limpballs or Shrill O'Lielly tell you it's for our protection. America no longer exists as we knew it. All the mechanisms are in place for this nation to become a police state. The only ones ho will enjoy such protection will be the parasitic bankers, Wall St and the elite who now run the government. Obomber s just declared himself first dictator of America. The communists now occupy the White House. This is only the beginning of the end for America. Your children will grow up as slaves to the banking elite and one world government. We are concerned about our right to enjoy this great hobby, but just wait a few more years and see what develops. It won't matter one damn how much the AMA lobbies congress, when the time comes radio controlled model planes will be outlawed just as they were in the old Soviet Union, and don't even think this won't happen..just consider what congress and the White House has passed and signed into law these past few years....just consider what I said earlier about governments starting down the path of tyranny. The only way for evil to succeed, is for good men to do nothing. " Government is not eloquent, it is not reason; it is force. Like fire it is a dangerous servant and fearful enemy." George Washington. Judge Andrew Napolitano recently stated " anyone who shoots down a drone is a patriot". I couldn't agree more.

[quote]ORIGINAL: Skycam41 Thanks for all the information. I have decided to go with the Sig 1/5 scale Cub and use a Thunder Tiger .91 for a power plant. I would also like to build a set of floats. Anyone know of any float kits that would work for the Sig 1/5 Cub? Oh, going to use 21st Century Cub Yellow covering. Again thanks for the help. RE: Which J3 Cub kit to build?
I've flown two Cubs so far: Goldberg Anniversary and GP .40. Neither are true to scale. Just consider them fun scale. The Goldberg Cub flew a bit on the squirrely side but maybe it was because my older brother built it( his first RC plane) and goofed up somewhere. The GP Cub flew fine on a O.S 70 four stroke...throttled back to 1/4 or so and it flew and sounded very realistic. At present I'm building the Sig 1.5 scale Cub. The airframe is built and ready for detailing. Since this is going to be electric powered I have to build in a battery tray and access, but this is no problem as I've done a lot of this. The kit is laser cut so parts fit should not be an issue, however having said that, I did have some problems fitting the fuse sides together with the tabs and slots not quite fitting properly, a little light sanding corrected this. Everything else fits together quite nicely and the wings will make a builder out of you. There are a lot of parts added for strut and servo mounts but it makes for a very well designed wing. The Only problem I had and it was entirely my error was that I installed the two inner upper fuselage cabin formers in which the phenolic tube is glued to, a bit above the other formers which resulted with anhedral wing. LOL! I had to remove the phenolic tubing, sand the inside of the formers clean and cut new sections for the inner two formers. I then made a jig out of 1/4" balsa to set up the proper dihedral for the phenolic tubing, using the aluminum wing tube to act as a wing. It all worked out well and I have the wing set at between 1.5 and 2 degrees which is plenty. (The actual way to measure the full size Cub is to stretch a string between the wingtips and measure at the center... it should be 2.5 - 3".) Don't ask me how I managed to screw it up but I always seem to find a way. I'm going to hinge the doors differently, just a bit and probably use rare earth magnets to hold the doors shut as I can't quite make the door latch work very well. All in all though this is one of the best Cub kits you can buy outside of going to 1/4 scale or above. Very true to scale and has room for lots of additional detail should you decide to add a scale cockpit ( don't forget the pilot always flies solo from the rear seat). I'm considering using scale landing gear from Cub Gear. Also Top Notch products has scale Continental engines that will fit the 1/5 scale Cub @ http://topnotchkits.com/index_files/slide0001.htm There are a number of Cub websites you can go to for lots of additional detail should you want. As in all scale detailing you have to find a place to call it quits or you'll never get 'er done. Cheers and good luck on your selection.

RE: Sig 1/5 cub aileron hinges
I'm in the process of building mine. I used Robart hinges for the rudder and elevator and Dubro pinned nylon hinges for the ailerons. What I do is sand a slot just deep enough for the hinges on the top of the trailing edges of the wing and the leading edge of the aileron to glue and fasten the hinges in. Now I may modify it a bit to set the hinges in deep enough to cover them with strips of 1/16 balsa. I could also use the Robarts for the ailerons. It would be a little more work but they are excellent hinges and worth the effort. Good luck on yours.

RE: Lt 40 float plane
Jim, that is another plane I considered, in fact, I had been considering that one before I decided on the LT-40, but not for floats. Yes, I like the idea of ailerons and flaps as I built a Seniorita with flaps. The only downside to the Senior is that it takes a lot of film covering, unless you use Koverall or similar covering, but then you gotta dope the covering which is quite odorous. The LT-40 is a smaller plane but quicker build and already has ailerons. The Senior is not that much larger than the LT-40 as far as wingspan goes and the flying weight is pretty much the same with the wing loading of the Senior being an estimated 12 oz./sq.ft while the LT-40 has a wing loading of 14 to 15.5 oz./sq.ft. The Senior has a bit more wing area + 27% . All in all it would be a toss up as to which one I would choose. The Senior would definitely look more majestic floating around the sky. I guess it will all come down to which I can get first. cheers

RE: Lt 40 float plane
Well, I thought that a longer float would add extra stability, maybe some people are used to flying with a shorter float. I tried a set of Gee Bee milk carton floats and they weren't worth a tinkers damn. That was ten years ago and never tried it again. I'm not so sure about using the G.P. or Goldberg floats as they are hollow and not too crash resistant in case the plane runs into an obstruction in the water. Sea Commander site is still up and running so they are still offering product but as nice as those floats are, they're a bit pricey for what I need. Now I need to find an LT 40 kit somewhere, hopefully on RC Universe classified , or elsewhere. What the heck....I need start another kit while I've got three or four yet waiting to be finished. Situation normal.

RE: Lt 40 float plane
Considering an LT 40 with floats but I'm getting some mixed signals here. Everywhere I've read, suggest that floats be 75% of length of the fuse measured from the engine prop plate to the trailing edge of the stab. Yet I see here that 36" and 38" floats are being used. So it seems that if I went with the suggested float size they would be too long. Obviously the foam core floats seem to do a better job than hollow. BTW I plan to power the LT 40 with electric.

RE: Sig Seniorita vs. Mini Telemaster
That Senior must have went like snake with those two engines even one old Surpass .48 would be enough for it. Since I fly electric, it would be all too easy to do. I just need to get a Senior and go through all my documentation on converting single engine to twins ie: wing structure, fairings, nacelles, etc. It looks daunting but as many people as have converted the plane, there should be plenty of info about the process. cheers.

RE: Sig Seniorita vs. Mini Telemaster
Recently I've been thinking about a Kadet Senior build. Even though it will use a lot of covering, I'd still like to do it. After looking at the numerous variations of Kadets, I might consider a twin Senior. These planes are so easy to modify and bash, no wonder they are so popular.

RE: Sig Seniorita vs. Mini Telemaster
In regards to my 'Rita, I copied the engineering for the ailerons from my Sig Citabria. Either building a new wing or modifying the existing one will require some engineering skill. Check out this website http://www.angelfire.com/indie/aerostuff/kadets.htm for some ideas. If you don't have a razor saw, buy one. I would also do some Googling around to see what else you can come up with. It does take a bit of head scratching at first but then it will drop into place as you will soon get an idea how it's done. I would stay away from strip ailerons.

RE: Sig Seniorita vs. Mini Telemaster
Here are a couple snaps of my two Senioritas: The Red/yellow taildragger is my kit built. The Black/red one is the ARF. I have to say the ARF is a better flyer than my kit built as the ailerons on the ARF are somewhat larger. other than that they fly the same.

RE: Electrified Northstar
I've seen a couple electric North Stars and both flew quite well. One was powered by a Scorpion 3026-710 and 5S Hyperion G3 pack. Went like scat. I would not hesitate to mount the motor where it is supposed to go. In fact you may still have to move the battery pack back a little as the Scorpion motors weigh nowhere near as much as a glow motor of equal power. There are great planes to fly as I was very surprised to hear how well they handled, but then again It is a Laddie Mikulasko design and he don't design no trash. BTW: ModelAero makes a foam version of the same plane with permission from Mr. Mikulasko and is called the Polaris XL. slightly smaller than the North Star and powered by a 200 watt motor. Flies exceptionally well. It's going to be a difficult decision to choose between the two. Guess I'll wait until Toledo Show and make a choice.....buy both?

RE: Sig Seniorita vs. Mini Telemaster
I've built and flown two Sig Senioritas: one from a kit and an ARF. Both are beautiful flyers. While the ARF version is no longer available the kit still is and you will more about building with this kit than from any ARF. When I built my kit, I added barn door ailerons and reduced the dihedral by half. It is also powered by a Scorpion outrunner and 3S lipo. I used separate servos for the ailerons and converted it to tail dragger. It is a great deal of fun especially to shoot touch and goes. Since the ARF version crashed I will replace it with another kit as this was tricycle set up with ailerons. All I need is to build a new fuse. The fuse is all sticks with a few balsa sheets in the front....for me it was a lot of fun to build and even my cat found it interesting. So go ahead and get yerself a Seniorita, spread out the plans and start gluing...before you know it, you've got a plane. cheers

Ya know, the Hog might be a good candidate for a pair of Oleo struts instead of plain wire. A set of Robart RoboStruts would aid in ground handling and add additional scale look. I've built a number of Sig kits and a club member has one built and ready for dope. Looks very nice and would make a great electric conversion. Maybe there's one in my future....

RE: Looking to increase club meeting participation
Getting people to come to meetings is one thing...getting them to show up for club events is yet another. All members in our club are notified by either e-mail or phone a couple days before meetings. Still most don't bother to show up. We have two regularly scheduled events each year: New Year's Day and Father's Day. Everyone in the club knows about these events but still most don't bother to show up. This is common for every club although from what I've heard about one of the larger clubs in Ohio, is that if you don't attend a meeting you get a phone call. If you miss three meetings you are no longer a club member. This may not be true but some clubs hold very large events some even two or three times yearly and the need for required participation is a must if these events are to be held at all. My only thought is that if you don't attend club meetings, don't be surprised or upset if the attending members vote to approve an expenditure, rule change or addendum that you don't like. In general, no one is forced to attend a club meeting but participating in meetings can be beneficial for everyone. We hold our meetings at our field/clubhouse during the flying season and at Pizza Hut in the winter.

RE: If there was no ARF's, would you still be in the hobby?
I have to agree that ARF's are not a hobby. I enjoy building kits and and a few so far from plans. I also own a few ARFs and while they fly ok, it's not the same as building. I noticed there are a couple who seem to lack much patience for even putting an ARF together. maybe its because the young people of today are so used to instantaneous gratification of TV, and computer games, etc. I'm not knocking ARFs though as there are some who enjoy flying but not building, besides, who has the time to build a 47% Extra? My first plane was a Goldberg Eaglet 50. It was covered with Monocoat but never flown as I got married before I had a chance to spend the money on radio and engine. My next plane however, the one I learned to fly with was a Sig LT 40 which I built over a month or two as it seem to take a long time as I was suffering from depression at the time. It was and still is good therapy for me.

RE: [Awaiting Approval]
Sunday morning....still here. Now I got laundry to do and it's gonna rain so I can't fly today. Rev. Camp now comes off as the village idiot and the fools that believed him are no different. This whole business of armageddon and rapture has been around for a long time. Seems to be really popular now with the christo-zionist movement ie: Benny Hinn, John Hagee etc etc and on and on. Was listening to a local radio station(country) the other day and they were discussing it. One of the DJs seemed to actually believe it might happen, not too surprised really at his comment as radio DJs are not chosen for their intelligence. Oh well, enjoy the rest of your lives my brothers and sanctify the holy art of flight at the local church of the flying field. Don't forget to pass the collection plate...brother Whippet has just yard dartted another plane.
