RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Jon ~ I watched your video earlier ! Dang, it looks almost like a tinge of snow on the ground.... All that rain eh...?! That thing seems like it has a nice power to weight ratio BTW... Waiting for that Auto with her still............................... Oh...! BTW, the other night RCU was down because I couldn't get on either at that time for a few hours like you asked a page or so back.... Heh....
Actually what looks like snow is actually where they have cut the grass since yesterday! I think the blades are blunt because it is slashed rather than cut hence why it looks glossy like that. Believe it or not the water has gone and I even knelt on the grass and didn't get a wet knee![&:] My neighbour does what you do Jeff and yesterday ran over a push-bike part on a customers lawn and buggered his mower. $250 to fix! Not happy. Yeah yeah yeah.... the auto's will come! [:D][:D][:D] I want to backflip first and get comfortable with the 550. i watched a vid earlier of a guy who progressed from Blade to a Gaui 550 and he said that it was so much easier on the 550 to flip, loop and roll. I like readin what you guys are doing with your Castle Ice speedies. I am going to have to get one. Do they still do the 80 amper you have Jeff? It seems as though on their site they have 50, 75, 100 from menory and there are the Pheonix Lite and the normal. but I would like to get some data logging. Other than the speedie and the software is that all you need (+ a USB cable too I guess??? I have charged all my batteries at work today. With the one charger it's taken forever but at least it's plodding away while i am [sort of] busy. Eddie ~ if you get your B400 up and going that's quite an impressive fleet you will have there Dude! I gotta get me another now. the B400 is sounding a little ropy even though it's mostly new parts. Compared to the nice buzz of those Align 450's it is anyway. Night night boys. friday arvo here and almost Bourbon time... yeeeeeee haaaaaaa! JL

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
+1 on the Tinning. OK this mornings 550 Video. Like I said earlier, shame the battery died on the camera as I was do some very fast backwards flight onthe next flight. Going up as if to do stall turn but coming straight back down in reverse - semi tail slide but not vertical, more sort of 45 degrees, and I was very close to flipping... Oh well next time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZybITDQXuZI

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Ivan ~ good to have you back! Sorry to hear about the fire and the empty fire extinguisher... ooh I'd have been livid, I mean - who checks these things... there could have been "someone" on fire.[:o] Not that these guys here haven't been holding the fort whilst you have been away - they are very helpful - but you were missed. Great pics of the car and you did have some successes by the looks of things. I just watched that G-Force meter vid. Wow! Jeff ~ I am currently uploading a 550 video! Nothing spectacular I'm afraid. In fact this was flight 2 for the morning on the Gaui. Flight 3 I was being more aggressive and was so so close to flipping...[X(] ... but the battery died on the Hat cam.[:'(] Eddie ~ I have had plenty of training in soldering - my initial trade when I left school was as an electrician and I did plenty in my time... I used to use my dad's a lot too but it was huge. I now have one of those 20W jobbies... my point is... I can't seem to get it right either! i know the drill! One of the Gaui ESC to Motor leads have twice failed due to solder "dry" joints. Part of the problem is that they get so hot. Heat for soldering is the key - along with clean solder points and a good flux. But I guess you've read all that by now. I haven't watched the new vid yet of the HK or whatever it is!![:D] I will buffer it soon. Scott - That Trex700 extreme 3D stuff was insane. I couldn't even keep up with the vid let alone the sticks! Wow! Bill ~ How's the 550 build going? Can I be of any assistance LMAO!![:D] OK - Video post will be next. JL

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Yeah - boredom - I know it too. I endure it everyday at work here! It's a shame as I get paid well to do the job while other lose theirs. Ho hum. Here is a quick video from this morning on the way to work. We have had a lot of rain over the past couple of days and I managed to squeeze a flight in between showers. Some pretty dark clouds around. You can see th epuddles in the grass where I normally take off from! Started raining at the end of this battery. All my music is on my iPod and i don't have iTunes here to get it off! I found these songs on the net... not the best. I used Windows Movie Maker from windows live for Windows 7. I don't like it. Too simplistic but does the job. I wish I could master my Adobe After Effects... very complicated - other end of the spectrum. The tracking was spot on when I took off but at the end it was way out. Found another loose screw in the head around the washout arms. I need to go right through the head now before something catastrophic happens. Should fix up the Gaui tonight and get her out again. Time to flip 'n' loop me thinks. Spent an hour on G4.5 last night and threw a couple of flips in to the mix on the B400 this morning. Was this forum (or rcuniverse) "down" earlier - couldn't get on for an hour or so? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_S9c49GaLY

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Eddie ~ I've watched the best part of that T500 "no more tears" vid now... (The Vomit-o movie is still trying to load...)[:'(] Love that 500. I finally found what was causing the constant tracking problem on the B400 last night.. pretty obvious in the end actually! After I got all the stuff back in the shed and I bought the heli's back in I had a quick look. I grabbed the flybar and just moved the blades to see where the slop might be and noticed the ball on one of the lade grips was loose! All fixed now - including a dose of loctite!! Now the weather is crap. Wind AND rain:

Just a quick change of subject... I had to send one of my Turnigy Accucel 6 chargers back as it just stopped working... They finally got it and agreed that it should be replaced. I ask to have it sent back EMS but they have asked for the full $18.95... I assumed that they sent it back at their cost (I paid to get it to them...). I thought they would send normal registered post and I would pay the difference to EMS... Anybody have any experience of that? JL

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Scott/Jeff ~ If I was to upgrade my ESC on my 550 - I am guessing the Castle Ice 75A would be the way to go right? Are there any other considerations when upgrading? I guess I am thinking it as a pre-curser to the upgrade motor at some point down the track. Maybe even an upgrade to the B400 ESC with a Pheonix Ice 50??? BTW Scott - not sure if you saw this one... this is the Blade being "flown"! I haven't got back to this standard since then (Oct 7th) due to problems and then the Gaui coming along... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdW4_3s4a9s The roll at 2:30 is my favorite!! RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Jeff ~ I was wondering what had happened to the Logo 10 - that will be cool to see that in auto-rotation mode!! My back yard looks like your bench at the moment - bits everywhere. It's a bit dis-heartening at the moment as I can't stow it all away until I get the paving slabs back down in there.. We have rain forecast so i have to try and get it done tonight. Most of it is under cover and some has plastic over it. All of the important stuff is protected [;)] When I attampted the autos on the B400 I was doing it from about 5 or 6m up with no forward motion - that's the next thing - more momentum. It was just too darn windy that day.[:'(]

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Guys! Well I have had a busy weekend moving the man-cave (the shed) across the back yard to another corner so no flying for me... haven't even got to charge the batteries from Fridays lunchtime flying on the B400. There is crap everywhere after emptying the shed. The heli's are wrapped up warm inside though [:D]. Jeff ~ I tried some low level auto's on Friday too after all (even though I have tracking issues), much like the ones in Eddie's videos above. It did make me smile actually just attempting it. the funny thing was - it was at the field I go to at lunch sometimes where I FIRST (and I mean VERY first) hovered the Blade back in March this year... there I am practicing autos!! Mine ended up with a couple of tip overs but nothing dramatic. It was actually very windy. I got it on video but still haven't got round to getting them up on YouTube... I'll give it a go later on today. Eddie ~ That motor sounds sweet! I haven't even ventured down the new ESC or motor path yet - I want to set my shed up properly with benches and shelves and tidy it up before I get serious. This is the opportunity the "helify" the shed! The Gaui needs the ESC to motor leads fixing up so she has been earthbound since Thursday last week and it may be a few days yet too. Good to see all the less weight and canopy discussion. Bill ~ I didn't realise you had ordered a 550 either - that's excellent. I knew you were contemplating it! Can't wait to hear about that. JL

[:D] i know how much jeff likes the protos lol, so i thought i tease him a little, although ivan can really break out the tease since he actually has one lol. wish i did, i really like the way it looks, and flys, at least on the sim. [:D]
I'm sure I have a Protos on RF G4.5... I will have a look. My flying on the sim has come on big time... I just need to replicate it in real life!! backwards circuits left and right, inverted passes left to right and right to left, nose in, loops etc. Just to scardey cat for real!! [:D] No 3D yet though, I am conetrating on orientation and smoothness. I'm sure if it wasn't for the orientation training I wouldn't have recovered the B400 just now. I will put up a video tonight too. looking forward to seeing that one.

God, I was such... such... such... a kid! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6352268211032740503# Jon... yep, I've tried it pointing down and pointing up.  On the stock plastic frame I had it pointing down even though the manual said to have it pointing up.... Oh, and thanks for that Avatar suggestion.... LMAO!!!! Scott
LMAO! I note it said the "original" Beanie Copter!! Attempts were made to copy the technology apparently....[&:] I just went out for 30 mins to have a fly as the wind dropped right down... The Blade 400 still needs work. Tonight I am going to split the frame and change the tail pully gear. shaft and bearings, the main tail drive gear and the belt. I was doing back flips and the tail went wild and I still have the "ticking" I think the belt is slipping. They are about the only original items on the thing!! Oh, and the main shaft bearings are coming out as well... I was in a back flip and it went violently to the left - I JUST managed to recover it. I need to go through the Gaui as well. I flew one pack on that as well - but to start with the blades wouldn't spin. I had an issue with my soldering the other day so I disconnected and re-connected the motor bullet connectors and it was fine. So I hovered really just in case. Something is a-miss. Finally tracked the blades but I have to get some decent carbons for it - these woodies flex to much. That's where the next stash of five and tens is going!! I realised to day I was adjusting the wrong blade!! Because they are leading edge control I was looking at the wrong one. I couldn't understand how it got worse!![&:] I had just done the B400 so was aiming in the same direction!! What a Nob.

sounds like an excellent plan. if you have 5 or 6 months on the sime thenthe 250 or b400 won't make too much difference - the 250 will still be harder to fly compared to the B400 though.

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
ORIGINAL: dunkonu23 Figured I'd give you guys a short update on the Head Hunter frame build.  It's pretty much done.  I would have been done had I not had to get a physical for insurancethat was weird.  The nurse came to my house.  Never had that happen before... anyway... Today was pretty much connecting everything in final locations and running wires.  I suck at running wires.  I absolutely hate it.  But at the end of the session, it's waiting for the boom to be put on and the tail to be setup, then... I have a decision to make.   Earlier in the day there were three options, but a little while ago, I added a fourth and fifth.   In a nutshell, the canopy doesn't fit properly with the TonicX Z30A motor I want to use.  So, my options are: 1.  Cut my Fusuno canopy to make the motor fit. 2.  Use the cheesy canopy that came with the IRCHA 425 kit (which I stretched to 550), and cut it. 3.  Use the Gaui 1300 KV motor. 4.  I ordered a different motor... a Hyperion ... here: http://www.allerc.com/product_info.php?products_id=3380  This motor is supposed to be the shiznit, but prior to this was only available with a kit from Japan.  That said, there's not spec one on the motor so size may still be an issue.  Who says bigger is better?  :) 5.  Do some creative engineering and devise a new way to mount the canopy.  Scott
Hey Scott I look forward to seeing some photos of the HH frame and that new motor. perhaps you could try cutting the cheap stock canopy first and then move on to the FG one if it works out. Out of curiosity - do you have a link to the Fusuno canopy you got for the 550? Talking of motors - is there spreadsheet on the net somewhere that summarises the power ratings etc? It's another thing that confuses me at the moment. You would never believe I was an electrician once! Trade skill trained - but never went down that path. horses for courses as they say.[&:]
ORIGINAL: baurwin ive got a question thats been buggin me. how crucial is it that the horns are truly 90*? say if you have one thats slightly off, as long as the swash is level, and you adjust epa's to compensate at high and low stick, i dont see how it would pose any problems. i have one of my helis that ive done this on, and im curious if it would create a problem or not. i believe after getting all my swash leveling tools i found that one servo was a slightly low at midstick so i just bumped it up a bit with some sub trim, then leveled it out at high and low with epa. then checked up and down thoughout the range of motion and the swash stays level through out. keep in mind, im not talkin about it being way off 90, but its a little off 90. aside from it maybe being a short cut and not the ''correct'' way to do it, do you guys forsee problems occuring. thinkin back, I cant even remember why I did it that way, or even wich bird it was on, either the 450 or 500. most likely the 450 as I recall I was just an experiment most likely. cant imagine doing it on the 500. I think maybe I just wanted to see if it could be done that way and then i never went back and recentered. or maybe I did, heck I dont even remember at this point. The 450 has been rebuilt so many times that even it was it, it prolly isnt that way n e more lmao. id like to hear you guyz's thoughts on it though. [:D]
Well - here's my 2c worth... from what you have described it sounds as though you are doing things the right way. To me there are a couple of ways to compensate for the servo horns not being truly 90'. I centred mine at 90' using sub-trims and then checked the ATV's when setting up the swash at full extents. Like you though it is amazinghow many times you can rebuild these things and still get stuck on what some might regard as elementary - like forgetting how to spell simple words sometimes! (like gauge or is it guage???). Usually my queries on here are just for re-assurance or confirmation. I'm with ya Eddie! Jeff - it seems whatever it is you do with that thing - it just motors! I haven't been to hung up on weight yet, but i think the B400 is due a new motor and speedy so I will no doubt re-read your testing. No scales yet though either [:o] 33' F with you and 34'C with us!! Still to windy most of the time at the moment though. I have both birds in the car and I'm holding out for a lull at lunchtime. Last night I removed the ESC from the Gaui, stripped the heat-shrink off and unsoldered the Throttle leads (to the RX). It was a little stretched so I needed to unwind a couple of loops from the ferrite ring. I found some clear heat-shrink at the LHS so I re-soldered with about another inch or so of lead and shink wrapped her up again. It allowed me to re-route all the RX wiring and neaten it up. I got another RX battery too - a Turnigy 1000mAh. it's a tad bigger than the 800mAh (as you would expect) so tidying the loom made some space for it. It's all good.[:D] The new FG canopy for the B400 fits like a glove! I bought T450 stand-offs but ended up screwing about 30mm of each end of an old flybar into the anti-rotation brackets. I fitted standard grommets into the canopy. To hold it at the base I used the Gaui principle - a short piece of plastic and a screw with some fuel tubing over it for it to locate on. Sweet. Let's hope I don't stuff this one into the turf! [&:] On the subject of canopies - i went to pick up my new FG Gaui canopy yesterday. I opted for the painted version - which actually means painted 'white' but with the faux windscreen in black. Very smart but it had a crack!! Right at the weakest point. Probably would have cracked there anyway but best to start off without! So they kept that one and I have ordered a 'non-painted' one instead. This time I will do a pucker paint job - not sure on the scheme yet. If you have any ideas - send 'em on over. Maybe bright and visible rather than the stock colours - after all - i have one of them!![;)] Ivan must be off racing is he? I thought I read something about that...
