RE: panther or cougar?
Hi Randy, You know about the 1/4 scale Panthers we are building and building and building, I also have the Der Jet Cougar that I bought from Mike Grant. So my answer was both even though I have only flown my little foamie panther. Good Luck. John

RE: Jet Legend F15 with Kingtech K80F
Hi, I have one of the early Jet Legend F-15s from Global Jet Club, I tried to fly it with an AMT Mercury and it barely flew, it would not loop and it was sagging in the turns. This engine had about 17 pounds of thrust. I installed a Jetcat P-120 and now the plane flies properly. I need to work on moving the cg back, the landings are way too fast. Good Luck, John

RE: Question on customer service expectations
"I asked if it was possible to buy the case or if I needed to send it in for repair. They should have said 'send it in for repair' - they didn't." I am wondering what is the difference between you sending it in for repair before your attempt to repair it and you sending it in now for repair? It sounds like you have to pay for a repair either way. Good Luck, John

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
We did a little work on my Panther last night, Joe and I added a piece of 1/8" balsa from the rear of the hatch to the cockpit area to stiffen the hatch from twisting, then we added the rear pins in the hatch to hold it to the fuselage. I still have to decide how I want to lock the front of the hatch down. We were thinking about the ailerons, I am building an F9F-2 model, here are some photos of the aileron tips from Pensacola:

Hi Larry, We have not made any pipes yet. Vladimir has made a spot welder and the tests have been good, but we have not purchased any stock to make a full sized thrust tube. If you check post #191 you will see the welder and some spot welds. Stay in touch, we may be able to help you out. John

RE: AMT USA AT450 Manual
The manual on the website is for the Generation 3 ECU. I went from the Generation 1 air start engines to the Generation 3 electric start engines, I never had a generation 2 ECU. I currently own three AT-280 engines and two AT-450 engines, they have all been converted to Generation 3 ECUs and I am happy with them all. When I get my quarter scale Panther done, an AT-450 will be powering it. I admit that US Microjet engines weigh more than other engines and they do not have all of the newest advancements, but they do keep running. I have attached Generation 2 ECU files. Please let me know if you have any questions. John

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Joe said he has writer’s cramp and asked if I would post an update from last night’s work. At the beginning of the build, Vladimir Hollis made five sets of wing plug in mounts; Vladimir gave us each a set at Joe's house in late 2010. By the time I was ready to install my wing spars and mounts, I could not find my mounts, we all looked, and no one had the extra set. Mr. Fun fabricated me a second set which I installed and they work great, but they are not like the Byron/Yellow/Sig or Vladimir's. There is not enough "meat" in the top or bottom of the new mounts to drill and tap the mount so that I can use a screw to pinch the wing spar vertically. This created a speed bump which stole my motivation for two months and a challenge to find a creative way to secure my wings to the fuselage. Unfortunately all of the cool ways with springs and cams and cables and pins were beyond my mental capacity, so last night Joe, Mr. Fun and I decided to run a screw through the wing spars horizontally. The aft mount looks like I can install a cap head screw through the spar and bulkhead and into a blind nut. I think that I will have room to use a ball driver to tighten the screw after my installation is complete. The forward wing mount is a little trickier, I can not get to the aft of the mount because of the landing gear structure, so I have to install a screw from the front, but the air inlet blocks the front of the mount. Upon further head scratching, Joe thought that access could be gained through a small hole drilled outboard of the inlet. Mr. Fun thought of capturing a cap head bolt in a block of wood with a blind nut and a locknut. The whole plan came together after a trip to Home Depot to buy more blind nuts and long drill bits. After we were sure the wings slide on and off with out binding, it was time to complete the sheeting on the top of the winglet, sand the winglets and smear some light filler on the sheeting. I appreciate the help from Joe and Mr. Fun, I really needed help getting the motivation to complete the wing mounts.

TRAILER CEILING INSULATION
Here is my tutorial for installing insulation in an enclosed cargo trailer. I installed a Coleman Polar Cub 9200 BTU rooftop air conditioner last year in my trailer, I was hoping for a cool place to relax during some of the hot days at the air field, but during the Jet World Masters event in Dayton the weather was 95 degrees almost everyday for two weeks and the air conditioner did not cool the trailer. I think it was cooler outside than in the trailer. I touched the ceiling of my trailer and it was so hot during the day I could not leave my hand on the bare metal for more than a second. I decided that I needed to insulate the ceiling of the trailer. I looked around at the events and not many people have rooftop air conditioners and I could not find anyone who insulated their own trailer ceilings. I talked to several people about what type of insulation should I use and what would be the best/ easiest/cheapest way to insulate the ceiling. We came up with Styrofoam board, bubble wrap and spray foam insulation. I called United Cargo, I am following their recommendation. 1 Remove the lights, air conditioner and other things from the ceiling. 2 Prime and paint the 1/8 luan sheeting and 1x3 boards. 3 Cut 1x3 boards to length and mount to the black steel ribs with #10 1-7/16 self tapping screws. These will be used to screw the luan plywood to. 4 Cut 3 ½ thick by 24 wide insulation to length to cover ceiling and about 6 down to the walls. 5 Spray one ceiling bay at a time with 3M #08088 General Trim Adhesive. 6 Press each precut block of insulation in there respective bay. 7 Cut luan to size, I started in the back with full pieces 32 wide with the seam down the center of the trailer and the front seam landing in the center of a 1 x 3 board. 8 After the plywood was installed, I removed two sections at a time and painted them with a final coat of high gloss paint, reinstalled them and then repeated the process with the other set of plywood. 9 I have a little cleanup work to finish, but I am happy with the look of the ceiling. Hopefully this will allow the air conditioner to cool the trailer to a milder temperature.

RE: A123 battery too much for 4.8 V rated servos.
Hi, There have been many reports, including my own, that there have not been issues using 20 year old servos with JR/Spektrum receivers and A123 batteries. I know that I have used Futaba S-148 servos and JR NES-517 servos on air valves without any problems. I wonder why your servos burned up? Who can tell us? thanks, John

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
I spent some time working on the Tip Tanks that Vladimir made for us. I started with 40 grit paper to knock down the weave of the cloth, I shot some rattle can primer on the tanks, then I glazed the tanks with two part Bondo, then I knocked the Bondo down with 80 grit sand paper and I followed that up with some 120 grit sand paper. I brought my tanks to a body shop for some advice on high filling primers and Larry and Visser’s Collision Center offered to shoot a new primer on my tanks for me, I picked them up today and they look pretty good, but I need to sand them with 150 grit paper and fill any low spots. Larry misted black laquer paint over the tanks to use as a sanding guide coat so that I can identify the low spots easier.

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Joe came over to help me glass the wings on Friday night and then I added a second layer of cloth on Saturday morning. I laminated a sheet of poster board with cloth and resin to make a “composite hinge cover for the rudder; I glued a ½ inch strip around the trailing edge of the rudder post. I worked on the vertical fin and rudders; I glassed the vertical on both sides.

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
I had the vertical fin on the plane and the rudders fitted to the fin and I was not happy with the shape of the leading edge of the built up fin, so we cut it off and we hot wire cut a new top fin and Joe sheeted it in his vacuum bag. Joe and I decided to cut a new rudder, but it was too wide at the top, so I used the old built up rudder top and I made a new lower rudder and center fairing. I have to fit the top rudder and install some sheeting and the hinge cover. I think it will be alright.

RE: Boomerang XLII stab bolts issue!!
I used small washers that fit into the recess, they were about 1/4 inch in diameter, I wanted them to prevent the cap head bolts from compressing the block of wood in the stab.

RE: Boomerang XLII stab bolts issue!!
Hey Guys, That was my old Boomerang XL2 generation one that flamed out and I pan-caked in at Bowling Green in 2006. I sold the air frame, it was repaired and a Rhino was installed. I think that the plane was flown too fast and the repairs might not have been completely up to standard. I have hundreds of flights on my replacement generation two XL2 since 2006, I have been flying it conservately with a Kingtech K-170 all last season. The wing bolts and tail bolts are all the same size as each other, all are 3mm. I glued a washer in the recessed area in the horizontal stab, that way I never have to look for them. 3mm should be fine. I also glassed my center section after I had to repair my gear mounts. Good Luck, John

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Last night Mr Fun and I glued the top of the verticle fin on my Panther, then I attached the pink foam block under the fin and reinforced the inside of the hatch. Tonight I am headed to Joe's house to reconstruct my Rudder and start the work on my wingtip tanks. I needed the measurements at Joe's for the rudder, so I put them there as a quick reference.

RE: Undecided
Hi, I am flying my generation Euro Sport with inlets and bifurcated pipe with a 28 pound AT-280. It takes about 300 feet of runway to take off, but it flies well. My throws might be too mild and my CG might be a little forward. I fly a K-170 which replaced an AT-280 in my Boomerang XL2, it is a very nice engine and the K-170 really has a lot of thrust. If the choice is a K-140 or K-170, go with the K-170. I know some guys flying the Euro with an AT-450 engine putting out over 40 pounds of thrust. Good Luck, John

RE: Y/A f18 twin, 200 pipe fitting.
I bought this partially finished generation one kit a few years ago, the solution was to remove the exhuast cones. I do not know how it would look on the ARF, but it works for me and it allows access to the rear of the fuselage. I have the large pipe and an Olympus engine. Good Luck and let us know what you decide. John

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Mr. Fun and Dennis came over Monday night and Mr. Fun and Joe came over Wednesday night, we worked both nights until after midnight. I glassed the elevators and the ailerons, I have to wait to glass the flaps until I hinge them. I glassed the "firewall". We cut the hatch from the fuselage and then decided to glue it back together and recut it. We ran light plywood on the bottom of the hatch and the inside of the mating fuselage for the hatch to rest on. I made a front and rear hatch former to box in the hatch.

RE: Fiberglassing questions: Why Bondo Specifically and Regarding Seams and now, more
Hi Justin, Yes, I made the glue stand out of 1/4" cleap plywood, I think it was a group project, all of my builder friends have them. You only need it for 5 minute and 30 minute, the finishing resin is very thin and can be stored upright. I never used 15 minute epoxy. I am glad we can help you learn about glassing. I only use light filler under the glass cloth, you should be able to see the white filler under the glass. John
