RE: Spektrum RX
Thanks very much Gordon! I got your PM too.

Spektrum RX
Hello Everyone, Which Spektrum RXs are recommended for Q500 planes? I’d like to keep the cost as low as possible and would like to NOT have to use a satellite RX. What Spektrum RXs are recommended for racing? Would the “sport receivers be okay? The AR400 is a mere $30 and the AR600C is affordable at $60. Looks like neither of these use a satellite. But I don’t want to risk bad performance or worse, a crash trying to save a few dimes. The AR6255 “carbon looks good in that it doesn’t have a satellite but is a little more pricy. TIA for your replies!

RE: New kit ideas?
Hi Rick, More power to you! I think the size you're looking at 20cc to 50cc is just about right. Even at the upper end of that size they're getting hard to transport so I think you've picked a good, reasonable size range. As for planes, you could go the warbird route because there's not a lot of selection for heavy metal in the 70" to 77" range. Sure there's a plan here or there but most stuff is bigger or smaller. 70" to 77" span is a really nice size IMHO. I'm always partial to racers. I'd love to see good scale representations of golden age racers like the Caudron, Shoenfeldt Firecracker, Wedell Williams, Mr. Mulligan, Jeep, Goon etc. Heck, anything golden age would be nice even if it wasn't a racer. Then there's always F1s. It would be nice to see Nemesis in this size. Hostetler's is awesome; it's just too big. Same thing with the Mamoth Scale plans Shoestring. Nice but too big. I wish you great success with this!

RE: Power Problems
ORIGINAL: carrellh I would not run a separate power supply for the retracts. You can do it (post 23) without hacking up your electrical system or voiding warranties, but, using the ''parallel pack'' info from http://www.hangtimes.com/parallel_packs.html (copied from post 19) should be all you need.
This was a very informative bit of information. It'll come in very handy. Thanks! It does raise a couple of questions though: 1) Someone in an earlier post in this thread stated that you must use two packs of equal voltage and equal amperage. The article clearly states that the packs must have the same number of cells (voltage) but that the amperage may differ. I can see why you'd want to have identical capacity (mah) packs just to avoid confusion when charging and cycling but I just wanted to point out the discrepancy. 2) The article only talks about NICD chemistry. I presume that this system also can be used with NIMH batteries. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 3) Assuming it will work with NIMH batts, what about having one battery be NIMH and one NICD? I don't think I'd ever do this, but just want to bring it up. Thanks!

RE: Printing plans source
ORIGINAL: Joe Westrich Hey everyone. Does anyone have a good source to print plans at a reasonable price. I went to Kinkos last night and they wanted $90 for my project. I thought that was a bit much. I have 3 sheets that are about 40 by 140in. Kinkos wants .75$ per square foot. Tell me where you print your plans.
75 cents per sq foot? You got a bargain! FedEx/Kinkos by me want $1 per sq ft. Needless to say I went elsewhere. Just last week I had a set of drawings of a 1/6 scale Sea Fury scanned to .pdf, Vito Tomeo's design. The three sheets, wing, fuse, ribs/formers, would have been well over $100 at Kinkos. I went to a place called ABC Imaging in Denver and the cost was a mere $10.70. I told them I'd be back with more.

RE: Do ARF's Belong in Warbirds?
ORIGINAL: makmov IMHO building is at least half the hobby. Not to say there isn't room for those who just buy an ARF and go flying. The non-builder pilots are just kind of in a different realm. There are those who never built a kit, I know some of them, and they don't come across as having any clue what it's like to spend those 100s of hours like a mad Scientists. Some of them just don't get it, which is fine. The shop is where the magic happens. To be balled up with nonbuilder ARF pilots, however, is kind of a slap in the face of true craftsmen. Anyone can buy an ARF and learn to fly. Not everyone can build a kit and make it fly. And many ARFers are not doing themselves and favors dissmissing what the kit build does in there shop. A little more respect for the kit builder would go a long way in the ARFers cause.
For me, tinkering in my shop building this or that, and fiddling with airplane drawings in my CAD program are WAY more than half of the hobby. But look at it from a different point of view... An R/Cer who flies only ARFs might be heard to say "Those kit builders and scratch builders just don't get it. They spend 100s of hours in their mad scientist's labs futzing around when they should be out here flying! That's what this hobby is all about after all Flying!" In some way or other, I've been disappointed with every ARF I've ever owned. I much prefer the craftsmanship and engineering it takes to build from a kit or from scratch. That said, I don't begrudge anyone how they choose to spend their time and money on this hobby. ARF warbirds belong in the warbirds forum because they are warbirds. It really is pretty simple.

RE: Do ARF's Belong in Warbirds?
Yes, ARFs belong in the warbirds forum. Just as some ARFs are better than others in scale representation, the same is true for kits and even plans available for plans building. Everyone knows the Top Flite kits leave a lot to be desired as far as scale outline goes. That said, they are a lot better than the sorta scale warbirds from Great Planes. The GP Corsair for example. Is the kit built GP Corsair a warbird? You bet your a** it is. If you're going to compete at the scale masters, you're not going to start with a Top Flite kit, much less one from Great Planes. So let me throw a wrinkle into this discussion. Some of the Bind N Fly warbirds look much better in scale outline, color scheme and markings than many ARFs, kits, or plans built planes. Take the BNF F4F Wildcat for example. Does the BNF F4F belong in the warbird forum? I say yes because it's a warbird.

RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
I got the stab and elevators sheeted then trimmed to shape. The trailing edge came out a little wavy so I used a steam iron to flatten it. It worked really well! After a little while the warp returned somewhat but it should sand out just fine.

RE: Best 3D CAD product for me
Thanks for the reply SBS. I might give FreeCAD a try. I called Alibre about their edu discount. The problem is that it is only a one year subscription. After one year, the product will no longer function at which time I'll have to subscribe again. Same is true for SolidWorks. Rhino has an educational offer that is not a subscription but of course, it's more expensive. I don't mind having to pony up for a quality product, I'd just rather spend my limited budget on plans, balsa, and other R/C gear.

RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
Thanks for the reply Chad. I'll look up that other thread for the tips on hinging. Yes, I was aware of how the ailerons are hinged. Seems pretty unusual. Do you know why Grumman chose this method? I do like how you've engineered the surfaces to be integral to the wing and stab then cut free later. That does make things easier to align. Good point about the rudder matching the other surfaces as well. You've convinced me. I'll be needing those 3/8" rudder pieces after all. At this point, you can include them with the plastic parts when you're ready to ship those. On the flaps, I plan to make a mock up before attempting to modify the actual parts. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to use the mechanism and still have a scale appearance. Problem is, it might require three servos. Or I might be able to get it to work with four bell cranks. We'll see.

RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
Thus far I have the fin built and have made progress on the stab/ele on my Hellcat project. I'm not going to post photos in this thread unless they differ from what has already been provided or if I modify the plane or deviate from the plans in a significant way. The content of this thread is valuable so I won't clutter it up with more pix of the same thing. That said I am considering deviating from the instructions in the construction of the rudder. I am thinking about making a built up structure and covering with coverall or similar fabric, fashioning a rounded LE of the rudder and using hinge points rather than CA hinges. Not sure what I'll decide on this. If I build the rudder this way, I should probably do this to the other control surfaces as well. Not sure I want to go there. I do plan to make significant changes to the way the flaps are actuated. I doubt I'll add the piano hinge gap sealing mechanism to the underside of the wing but I think I can get the flaps to actuate back and down rather than just dropping from the TE. We'll see if I can do this without adding a bunch of weight.

RE: V-Tail Question
I think that you didn't change anything from your first post. In both you say that the left ruddervator goes up. This will produce right yaw which is the opposite of what you want. When looking from the rear of the V, both ruddervators should move left for left rudder and right for right rudder.
