RE: Inverted 4-stroke?
I haven't run the 65 inverted, but have the 32 mounted inverted, no problem. J

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge
My 65's run CCW. I suppose if you mounted the prop hub on the magneto/flywheel end, then they would run CW. When the hub is mounted on the fan end, then you have an engine that turns CCW. Granted the mounting lugs are larger on the front of the engine (there are lugs front and back), but the smaller rear mounting lugs have held up fine. The fan end also provides a much bigger shaft on which to mount the prop hub. J

Nicely done. Are you using the stock muffler for flight? Mine will turn a 20x8 at @ 6600 RPM. J

RE: NEW BUSA 1/3rd Scale Fokker Triplane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BobH, My first WWI AC was a Fokker DRI from the WE Tech plans. It was a bit of a challenge. The tail as shown was completely sheeted and way overbuilt. There was really no info as to mounting the cabane struts and the landing gear was kind of weak. Fortunately at the time my father was building a DVIII/EV from the Holman plans so I borrowed some of the construction methods from those plans. I have the WE Tech plans for the DH4 and hope to build that someday. Now that I know what to look out for it should go smoother. J PS: do335a, Do you have Bonzo plans? I remember there being a Buster, but not a Bonzo. I like the Bonzo.

RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
I'd love nothing more! However, when it rains, it pours. We had a small fire in our kitchen and cleaning up the mess will take a bit more time. Safety note: I have about 4 or 5 fire extinguishers but all of them were either downstairs or in the garage (our kitchen is on the second floor). From now on I'll keep one upstairs as well. How many fire extinguishers do you keep in your house? J

Life is what happens when you really want to be making airplanes. I think I have all the plumbing problems in my house fixed (fingers crossed). I am also "mentoring" a high school senior with his project and that is on my bench now. I hope I can get back to the Albie after the 18th. J

RE: Dawn Patrol over Gilman Springs WW1 2012 (lots of cool pics)
Albatros DV, judging by the color scheme. The auxillary strut is a bit of a red herring. One can find DVas, DVs and even DIIIs with (and without) the strut. The easiest way the tell the difference between the DV and DVA is the aileron control cables. Thanks for the pix! J

RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
The rudder cables are just running free, which might pose a problem if I need to replace them. I did put in tubes for the elevator cables, but not full length tubes. I'll try to get some pics of the LG Monday. I have the Windsock Datafile, a series of C&C articles, and other bits and bobs for reference. J

RE: SE5a 1/5 Scale, can it compete?
I've seen several of the Dynaflite SE5s and they fly very well, so much so that I wouldn't mind having one of my own. However, one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is that the top wing is way too far above the fuselage. You might want to check the outline first before adding finer detail. J

I deviated from way shown on the plans and my stab is a plug-in affair. It's a bit more work but I can cover the stab halves before they are attached. J

RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
If you haven't built the stab yet, you might want to check the location of the the middle and outer ribs. I made some airfoil shaped ribs out of 3/16" balsa and then added them outside the 1/4" square as shown on the plans. I then removed the 1/4" square. PS: If you do a search for caning reed, yuo should find several suppliers. I use 1.5mm for "wire" TEs and 3.25mm for tube TEs.(1/4 scale AC).

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 scale Fokker DVII from plans
Two quick ways I can spot a BUSA DVII are the landing gear axle fairing (aka "subwing") and the size of the strut fairings. These are both rather easy to correct if you know beforehand. J

RE: FOKKER D7
This probably not the same aircraft as the first pic I posted! It is likely the same AC as the photo Oberst posted. If you look closely you'll notice the prop, prop hub, and the stripes are different. PS: Yes, Kirschstein is Jasta 6, my reference to Jasta 8 is for a different aircraft.

RE: FOKKER D7
Here is the B/W striped DVII. There were many red/white DVIIs, most all of Jasta 18 were R/W, although the bottom of the wings may have retained the lozenge. The all R/W DVII I was thinking of was from Jasta 8.

RE: FOKKER D7
OOPS! I almost forgot. There is also a DVII ( probably two) that is completely covered in black and white stripes. You may have to spend some $$ for all the masking tape to do that one though! The red/white striped one has several goods photos of it and it certainly is painted all over. J

RE: FOKKER D7
If you want to do a WWI DVII without lozenge, here are some of your choices. All white, all black, red and white striped, and one with yellow wings with the streaky green Fokker camo on the fuse. There may be some more but it's hard to tell if they retained the lozenge on the bottom of the wings or not. J Here is a pic of my Jasta 7 DVII, Wiili Nebgen's machine.(Willi was tying his bootlaces when the photo was taken)

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
This is my first 1/3 scale model and I was wondering how powerful a servo I should use. I was thinking of using one for the rudder, two for the elevator, on one for each aileron. TIA, J

RE: Stupid truck ad
Oh yes, trucks landing airplanes, trucks going through fire, trucks bursting through snowbanks, trucks making you a mocha latte while driving to the top of Mt. Rainier, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. The only harm is that some idiots believe they can do anything with these vehicles, despite the disclaimers. Unfortunately, a lot of these idiots wind up in my neighbor's front yard after a snow or freezing rain condition. 4-wheel drive and anti-lock brakes do not counteract the laws of physics. I am glad I am on the upper side of the hill.

RE: Applying Dope to GTM Fabric Question
All good answers. One thing to understand is that non-tautening dope is like decaf coffee. Decaf coffee still has caffeine and non-tautening dope still shrinks. My only concern about using tautening nitrate at the very beginning of the process is the possibility it might pull the edges of the fabric off of the airframe. As others have said, don't freak out if it looks horrible after the first coat or two of dope, "It will get better". J

RE: 4-mix 65cc got me stumped
Since you are using EI and hand-starting, I would take off the compression release. It's easy to do and at the same time will also allow you to double/triple check the valve timing, which I think the problem is. An easy way to tell TDC on these guys is to look at the crankshaft counterbalances. The top of the balance should be parallel with the bottom of the cylinder/crankcase, and of course the arrows on the cam should then line up with the marks inside the case. After the teeth engage, you can rotate the shaft back and forth a little to make sure you didn't "jump a tooth". All of the 65s I've done run at 28 BTDC and I set mine at 26 to make them less "bitey" during starting. Best of luck, J
