RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
I was just on the Hobby People website earlier this morning and saw the great deal mentioned by bigedmustafa for the Hitec Aurora. I went to a different site to do a comparison between the Aurora, the Futaba 10C, and the JR X9303. You can see the comparison chart here: http://www.hitecaurora.com/Comparison_Chart.pdf It looks like the Aurora is the radio for me! When I went back to the Hobby People website, the price had climbed to $429.99. I called them to ask about the change in price, and they said that the sale price must have been a typo because they didn't show any sale price on the item. Hmmm... juggler

Mighty Atom .097 and O&R FRV .60 Ignition Engines
I've got two antique ignition engines that have been restored to original operating condition. One is an Ohlsson & Rice FRV .60 built in the early 1950s I believe. The serial number on the back of it is 079361. The other engine is an .097 Mighty Atom dating from 1939. The serial number on this engine is 3900. You can see photographs of both engines below. If anyone could enlighten me, I'd like to know what the current market value is for each of these engines. Does anyone have the most recent Anderson Blue Book? What are the values listed for each engine, and are these in fact accurate representations of what the market would support in terms of price? Thanks for any help you can provide. juggler

RE: Sal Taibi 84
Hi KH116, You did a beautiful job restoring that plane! I purchased a 1941 Goldberg Comet Interceptor that was in rough shape, and like you I restored it and in the process converted it to electric flight. It also has the lifting stabilizer and it flies like a dream. You mentioned in one of your previous posts that you recently built a 96" Lanzo Bomber. I've got a short kit for this same model and I plan on building it later on this year. And I'll likely power it with an electric motor too. What motor/battery/prop combo did you select for the Bomber, and how does she fly? Could you post a few pictures of the finished project? Thanks. juggler

RE: Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
I thought that some of those who participated in this discussion might like to see the photographs of the resotred engine. Woody Bartelt did a great job! I do have a follow-up question for those of you who operate these engines. I'm considering using this engine in a 96" wingspan Lanzo Bomber, and in order to operate it I have to select a set of ignition components (condenser, coils, resistors, etc.) since I don't have any. Do you have any recommendations on where to purchase these compenents for this engine? Woody has a Model Electric ignition system for about $45.00, and also offers a Chinese version that's lighter for about $35.00. Does anyone have any experience with either of these systems who can give me a suggestion about which one would be a better choice for my application? Thanks for any assistance that you can provide! juggler

RE: Great Planes Spirit info
I've electrified a Great Planes Spirit, and it thermals beautifully. I bought this sailplane as an ARF on Ebay many years ago. The original owner didn't do a very good job of assembling it, and the plane was damaged on its very first flight due to a radio problem. After it sat unused for a few years, I decided one day to convert it over to electric flight. I managed to make all of the modifications to transform it into an electric sailplane in just two days. It was very easy to do. See the attached photograph for the layout of the components. I use a 3 cell 2200 mAh LiPo battery with a Castle Creations Phoenix 35 speed control and a Turnigy C3530 1100 KV brushless motor. The dimensions of the Zippy Flightmax battery in the photograph are 4" x 1 5/16" x 15/16". The fuselage will easily accomodate a battery that is 1 1/2" in width. And with this set-up, I didn't need to add any ballast whatsoever. It climbs incredibly fast under full power. You will love it! juggler

RE: FINDING LOST PLANES - Plane Locators
I own three of the Sky King lost model alarms. They seem to work well, and I've never had one in a plane that went down. But I did lose my Zagi a few weeks ago, and was cursing myself that I didn't have one of these locators in the plane at the time. I went searching through the woods for about an hour, and it was tough going. The underbrush was extremely thick. By luck I managed to find it. When I got the plane out I checked to see what had gone wrong. Nothing was working. No motor, elevons, or receiver power. Nothing. I went to disconnect the LiPo battery, and when the Dean's connector was about half way out suddenly everything turned back on again. Then I plugged the connector all the way back in again, and everything shut down. Unplugged it half way again, and suddenly everything came back to life. Plugged it back in all the way, dead. My connector apparently had gone bad somehow. And even if I had one of these lost model locators in the plane when it went down, it still wouldn't have worked because there would have been no battery connection to supply it with power. When things go wrong, they can really go wrong. I was lucky that I found this plane. juggler

RE: Full size RX vs. Micro RX
I have also had a great deal of experience with the Berg single conversion 4 channel receivers. They are full range. I had a sailplane climb so high in a thermal once that I could barely make out the wings, and it flew with a Berg 4L microstamp receiver. I had no issues controlling it whatsoever. I have approximately 10 of these receivers, and have had good luck with all but possibly one of them. I did run into an issue flying a Multiplex Easy Glider. I had flown this plane for less than a year, and one afternoon the plane was flying normally when it hit a gust of wind and suddenly went berserk. It was doing tight backward flips at full throttle, and refused to respond to the transmitter controls. It seemed as though I was hit with some type of interference. There was was absolutely no control at all. I am still not certain if the problem was interference, or was a fault with the Berg receiver, or the brushed Blue Arrow speed control, or with some of the other electronics. When I got the plane back I checked the receiver crystal, and it was still locked in place. So that wasn't the problem. After talking with the Castle Creations techs, they instructed me to mail the receiver back to them so they could examine it. They immediately sent me a brand new receiver at no charge. So if you have a problem, or even think that you have a problem with their products, they stand behind them 100%. And they have some of the most knowledgeable technical support people in the industry. I recommend them.

RE: Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
Thanks for the reply Jim. No, I'm not sure if it's a .60 size or not. I guessed that it is based on the physical size of the engine. It has no gas tank, and the serial number on the back of it is 079361. According to the information in this thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1062223/mpage_1/key_ohlsson/anchor/tm.htm#1062223 the serial numbers ranged from 078891 to 080830 for .60 O&R engines manufactured in the 1950s with no gas tank and aluminum head. The distance between the flats on the plug measure 3/8", and there is no adapter in the aluminum head.

Ohlsson & Rice Antique Airplane Engine
I just purchased a box of 11 airplane engines at a garage sale recently, and found this one in the box. O&R appears on the front. I discovered that this stands for Ohlsson and Rice. I have absolutely no experience with vintage engines, and was wondering if anyone could confirm if this is in fact a .60 size engine, which I suspect. The engine has good compression, and turns smoothly. I can't tell if anything is missing from it, but I am guessing that it is all there. The glow or spark plug on the top says "CHAMPION VG 2". Based on some preliminary research, the serial numbers on the back indicate that it was probably manufactured at some time in the 1950s. I would like to get this engine up and running. Can anyone direct me to a web address where they walk you through the process of operating and maintaining these types of antique engines? What type of fuel does this engine use? Is it a gasoline engine, or a glow fuel engine? If it uses gasoline, what octane should be used, and what is the correct mixture of oil to gas? Should castor oil be used in place of automotive oil? Is there anything that I should be wary of in starting or running this engine? Were these reliable engines, and was the power output comparable to the .60 engines that can be purchased today? Any help that you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks. juggler

I own a wide range of Castle Creations Phoenix speed controllers and Berg receivers. RE: never say "totaled"
Here's an example of a plane that had a wing in the dumpster, but I decided to put it back together anyway (for the second time). I just love the way it flies. I bought this Comet Interceptor already built, and it was obvious that whoever originally built this plane didn't really have a thorough grasp of construction principles. The wing construction looked very flimsy, and I realized this as I recovered it after the first crash. That crash was caused when the receiver antenna was whipped by the wind and got caught between the base of the rudder and the fuselage, keeping the rudder deflected so that it couldn't return to the neutral position. It wasn't pretty watching the resulting death spiral. I repaired it and repositioned the exit for the antenna, and the next few flights went well. Then in about another week I had a friend bring it up to about 500 feet, and he climbed under full power. The wing couldn't take the stress, and it sheared in half just after it reached altitude. I watched it auger into the ground at an angle of about 45 degrees. The carnage can be seen in the attached photograph. The entire front end of the plane was trashed, and the wing was no longer worth repairing. So after some hesitation I finally built a new wing, and repaired the fuselage for the second time. The next two photographs show the plane after the rebuild. It flies beautifully. juggler

5" Diameter Wire Wheels for a Fokker DVII
I'm in the process of building a scale Fokker DVII, and wanted to use a set of 5" diameter wire wheels for the landing gear. I can't find a set anywhere. So it could take much longer than that. I can afford to wait until the end of the year, but I'd be very interested if anyone could tell me where they are available today. And I did also check Ebay, but there are no current auctions for these wheels. Thanks. Juggler

Sailplane Wing Balance
In the process of building a new sailplane wing, I had to add some ballast to one side to get it to balance properly. The wing is 66" long, and the ballast is relatively light, weighing in at about 5 grams. I positioned it approximately 16" out from the center of the wing and it balances perfectly. What didn't click in my brain as I was doing this is that the piece I used for ballast is a small magnet. Does this have the potential to screw up the reception of the 72 MHz signals to my plane? I can dig it out and replace it with lead, but if there is no cause for concern I would just like to leave it alone and fly. Any opinions? juggler
