RE: Large plastic kit of a US Gato Class sub?
ORIGINAL: CrunchyFrog Whenever I do sea trials, though, the rule is that at least one thing's got to go grievously wrong. . . first trial tends to be short ! True to form, I smacked into the learning curve running my boat. I hadn't been practicing co2 cartridge replacement lately: When I replace a cartridge, I forgot this can stress wires and pop out plugs I have to check; I couldn't even surface - -because I forgot to reattach the blow tubes . Then I cut short the trial to flee a thunderstorm. This run was a failure, but I've got the sub ready to go out again.
You called it, but its true about the learning curve. Glad it got home safe and sound. Cheers. Dean

RE: Moebius SeaView
I got two Sub Driver units, the two in the middle. The painted one is complete with all the fixings and built mainly by Stringfly. I still need the electronic switch for the Snort Pump and the ADF for this unit. I have a SL - 8 rx and a Futuba PCM 1024 FP-T7UHP Super Helicopter Radio tx for this one with a 75 MHz Spectra Moduel refit for subs. The second one is 95% done and will fit together via the center hull seam, vs the super structure concept of the painted unit. It will not have functional bow planes, but I think I will put external dive planes on the nicelles on that one. I saw it here on this build, and consider it a good idea. I have a SL-8 rx and the WFly six channel tx for my second Sub Driver unit. The one on the outer left is destined for a Big Dave unit, and I think will be a copy of Steve's Neill's except I think I may include sail planes. Also, based on testing of my second Sub Driver unit with external dive planes on the nicelles, if sucessful as useful control surfaces for pitch stabilization, will also go on this unit. I have the WFly rx for this unit with the WFly tx. The one on the outer right, I am not sure yet what I will do with it....but I am tossing around the idea of making a cutaway static version...thats why I have the rear hull off. RE: Moebius SeaView
I plan on building a Gato. I would like to also make a large Seaview, either Rick Teskey or a Debor. I would like a Engal Gato, but I will have to go with a Revell Gato. I plan on using a Big Dave WTC for that build. I will be sending for the Seaview unit from Big Dave in a few weeks. I will keep you up to date on the build and the results.

Hi Snowtank. I asked Steve about the battery requirements for his motor. I am still waiting for his reply. Cheers either way, I will tell you soon, as I am getting my Big Dave unit soon.

Hi snowtank. Steves build has the battery in the WTC. You just acess the front endcap via the subbay doors. Nice approach, I am glad you agree.

RE: Lost Or Recovered Sub Tales
Cold cold water, St. Lawerence River, last week. Went down too deep dynamic dive, hit negitive box compression and the bottom, about 12 - 15 feet down. There it sat stuck in the weeds, wrapped around the tail. I sat on the river side and said a prayer....along comes a guy, singing to his ipod, having a great day in his beautiful gold sea kyack. It was like an angel from heaven. I called him over and told him my tale of woe. He went down stream and I met him there with a stick I had found on shore that was just about right for someone in a boat. In fact it was just right, the guy got the sub with the fork of the stick, under the sail planes, and around 6ft the sub became positive boyance and came up the rest of the way on its own. Man was I happy. My first sub, my first loss and recovery. Whew! I realize that one must stay very close to shore as the water here is way too cold to go into, about 5c ! Anyway remember negitive box compression is reached at an earlier depth due cold water and that with dynamic divers, a APC is a must.

RE: Robbe SeaWolf V2 Maiden Voyage
Negitive Box Compression It happened to me today with my Robbe SeaWolf. I dove too deep. It went straight to the bottom and got stuck in weeds. I sat on the river and said a prayer...and low and behold some guy came singing, down the river, on a sea kayack. He retrived my sub and at five feet it came up on its own, none the worse for wear, but truly a voyage to the bottom of the sea.

RE: Robbe SeaWolf V2 Maiden Voyage
I cannot get over how good I am at scribbing and cutting a hull apart. My skills have grown a lot in three months. I remember being TERRIFIED of cutting into a model....now I am a surgeon. No mistakes, no dings, nicks, or F ups. I have the tools, the knowhow and the confidence to go miles and years into this journey. I hope to turn on a whole group of people with this hobby this weekend at the local RC Display. I have been asked to bring my wares and I have been busy making sure that they are complete, good looking and functional to a high degree.

RE: Robbe SeaWolf V2 Maiden Voyage
I ordered four more batteries for the sub. I also made the modification of scribing and opening the front hull...a mistake from the original plans. That needed to be done to make a proper replacement for closing the Seawolf. The one fatal flaw, was the thin thread they had setup to close the WTC. So I replaced the thin 2mm thread and tightening rod with a 5mm thread and a O ring with a wing nut. She is much more secure now. I really like this sub. It dives excellent, patrols a mean sea with no bobbing and is my first large sub Cheers Dean

RE: Robbe SeaWolf V2 Maiden Voyage
Well I have the modifications done. I got the 6v in and the wiring is tighter, with the rx now under the tray up in front of the servos instead of back by the motor on top of the tray. They say that the sealed lead acid batteries are good for a hour. That is going to be fun. Back in the water tomorrow...two pounds heavier...pics to follow. Cheers Dean

Robbe SeaWolf V2 Maiden Voyage
Robbe SeaWolf Well its ready to go and today is the big day. Here are the insides of the first large sub I have ever made, its 36". Its a V2 version with front dive planes on a microservo. Need to get a ADF for the rear planes. Thats on order. But I am going to giver her a shake down cruise without one tomorrow. Should be 15c and the water should be about 38F. Its cold water but the ice is gone....time to get er done. Well I got two runs with no water leaks. Its a dream come true. It handles very well. I love it. It needs more ballast and I am going to put in my new 6v sealed lead acid battery, that will give me another two pounds dead center. Should be perfect. Cheers ]

RE: Walmart Submarine = Cool ! Part II
I have been fortuante then. My Dallas is four years old I think, and it works perfect. I am very happy with my fleet of two Dallas and a Chicago. One Dallas has a Seaview piggyback like the shuttle on the 747 and it works great two. Thats just my experience, not a speck of ceral, individual milage may vary.

Thanks SNOWTANK, but STRINGFLY did all the seams and stuff. I just got a refund for a Seaview missing in action. I also just got my tax refund. I now have enough money to finish the Seaview. That means Lipos and charger, ADF Plane Leveler, Sombra SL-8 rx, and the SNORT-Low Pressure Blower. probably Lipo Protector too! Cheers. PS Was working on the Seawolf last night making sure everything is shipshape. LOOKING GOOD!

What an amazing work of art the Sub Driver is with this build. The CG is PERFECT. Incredible fit and balance. I cannot say enough about the experience of Mr Merriman or the product. I will love getting a Gato together. The internet world out there who are listening. The Seaview kit from Caswell is a must buy. The DVD set a must have. Everything works PERFECT. Thanks Mr Merriman and Mike Caswell for completing my dreams of a boy and on my birthday no less...how cool is that? Cheers Dean
