Sorry for not posting for a bit. I've been really busy lately. I have the fuselage built up enough to start installing things so that it will go together a lot easier later. I test mounted the engine and I added rails in the radio compartment to mount the radio gear. The reason I chose rails is so that I can slide the radio gear fore and aft in order to place my cg where I want it without having to add extra weight. I have some ideas for a trim scheme floating in my head but I'm going to let you guys find that one out when the time comes. Let me know what you guys think so far. I'm open to lots of suggestions. Enjoy the pictures!

RE: Bridi Vagabond 40 by Bluejay Models
I love how easy this is going. It goes together well enough for being my second build but open ended enough for me to make my own decisions about a few things. I'm about to mount the engine and I will be adding the servo and radio tray once I design them along with the pushrods so I can get the locations of everything just right while it is "in the bones". If this plane is as enjoyable to fly as it is to build, then I think that I will have a wonderful model this upcoming season!

Two more. One of them is a distraction that my dad is building while I build mine. If I don't post for a bit that is a picture of the reason why. But this build is so quick that it shouldn't be a problem.

RE: Bridi Vagabond 40 by Bluejay Models
I'm still having trouble uploading pictures forsome reason. I have no idea why. But here's an update. I pulled the tail together and added all of thecrossbraces. When I did this I created a bow in the radio compartment. After checking that everything was properly placed, I took two pieces ofaluminum angle stock and made a jig by clamping them to the bulkheads. Ithen made the frame that goes underneath the cockpit and glued it in place andsanded it flush with the sides of the fuselage. Earlier tonight, I addedthe wing mounting blocks and the triangle stock to reinforce them. I hopeto get these pictures uploaded soon so that you all can see my progress. I'm liking how it looks so far. Two things; 1: I've decided on a trim scheme. I'lldescribe it once I make final decisions of what I want to do. 2: I'm going back and forth on whether ornot I want to add wing fairings. I like the original lines a lot but I'veseen some kaos planes out there with wing fairings that look awesome.

RE: Bridi Vagabond 40 by Bluejay Models
Gray Beard: I really like your airplanes. Especially the circles, they are a very bold touch indeed. I am also a huge fan of your Dirty Birdy. I love those planes. A fellow club member used to have one right before he got into turbines and said that it flies like a jet. I am seriously considering building one. But that will come later after I get this Vagabond built, set up, in the air, trimmed and engine tuned. I also have two projects to wrap up before I'd get to it. But back to your Dirty Birdy. I was considering black and yellow for my vagabond and I was thinking of some way to trim the underside to make it stand out. I love your circle and what looks like a tire track to me. Scotty: I think I will definitely go with my GMS .47 for two reasons. 1) You and everyone else who says that they are great engines with a lot of power and 2) I already own it so I can save that money for my DLE modification that I'm doing on one of my other planes. I've read about carb leak issues but they all seem linked to improper carb installation so I will definitely make sure that gets sealed. I have the version from MECOA that came with the tuned muffler so it should sound real nice when it winds up too. I haven't gotten anymore building done this weekend since I've been with my gf and her 4yo. But I should get a ton of work done on the fuselage this week. Progress is kind of slow because I have to wait longer for the Sigment to dry than CA but I like that I have the time to set things exactly where I want them and it forces me to be more precise and take my time. Both of which I like doing since I haven't built for a while.

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
So Santa Claus brought me a DLE 20cc for Christmas. I'm beginning to modify the firewall on mine to take this engine and I'll use that evolution 120nx for another project (probably a Sig Four Star 120 or something similar). But before I do too much, I was hoping to get some tips from you guys about the modification. Instead of mounting it in the stock location, I want to mount it such that the cylinder is straight down because it would be right behind the lower air inlet and I could just block off the upper air inlets so that I would have proper cooling. I want input from you guys before I proceed too far because this is my first gasser. Since this is the newer version with the boxed firewall similar to larger models, I am laminating the sides with 3/8" birch plywood and reinforcing with 1/4" triangle stock to accommodate the additional power and vibration (which I plan to minimize). Let me know what you guys think and please provide any tips you may have to rotate the engine mount without moving the centerline of the engine. Thanks, Jeff

Bridi Vagabond 40 by Bluejay Models
I've started to build my vagabond 40 by Bluejay models. I have made progress on the fuselage so far. I have the fuselage sides, bulkheads and crossbraces installed. I am using primarily sigment because my building area (basement) is poorly ventilated and the use of CA always gets to me in there. I am looking for ideas for covering so feel free to post pictures of your planes (preferrably classic pattern ships). I also need input on how to set up some sort of wing jig. I was thinking I would be building the wing panels upside down because the plans show that there is dihedral in the bottom of the wings only. I'm also deciding between engines. I already have a GMS 47 laying around that I'm not using but I am also thinking of an OS 40 SF (if I win the auction), 46 AX or Magnum 46. Any input on these is welcome. I am having issues uploading pictures at the moment. As soon as I get is resolved, I will post them.

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
How's the build coming? I agree that the 10 oz is too small. I am going to use that tank in the Vagabond 40 that I am building over the winter. Let me know how the Dubro fits. I am going to try the Sullivan 14 oz and I'll post what results I get. I am also definitely over revving with my 15x6 despite that being the recommended prop. I want to try a 16x6 but I am concerned with ground clearance. I might go with a three-blade 15x6 and see how that goes. I know that Xoar makes one out of wood that is really nice.

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I think so. The thing to watch out for is that there is a cross member on the top hatch that runs across the back of the tank area when the hatch is on. As long as the tank does not extend past the rear of the tank area, it should be ok. I have a Sullivan 12 oz in mine right now and I have a little bit of room left over behind it.

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
Did you order the newer version? The one that I had pictured above? I'm also going to change out the tank in mine for a 14 oz because I want a longer flight time. And I'm going to switch mine from a 15x6 to a 16x6 because my engine is over revving a little. Maiden Report (New version): Once trimmed it flies great!!! I ultimately had to had a little bit of weight to the tail to balance the Evolution 120 that I stuffed in there. My cg is right where the manual states (the new version puts the cg 100 cm from the LE of the wing) and it is slightly nose heavy. I'll move it back once I start 3D but it is fine for now. Flight tests revealed that the right wing was a little heavy so I put an ounce in the left wing to balance it and now my flight testing shows that it is balanced. Flight of the airplane is very neutral. It goes where you point it. Vertical with the Evo 120 is unlimited. A fellow club member who loves Extras wanted to how far mine would go vertical and I had to pull power off when it got so high that I was starting to have difficulty seeing it. It's vertical rate of climb yielded a couple "Holy sh!t!" comments from club members. Knife edge pulled hard toward the landing gear. Ground inspection revealed that I had bent the aluminum wing tube that came with the plane. I definitely recommend replacing with something stronger. The landing gear mounts in the fuselage were beefed up a lot in the new version (mine took a beating with many dead stick landings until I could get my engine dialed in and it's still going strong) but the aluminum gear is the same as previous versions and it bends really easily. I definitely recommend replacing that too. The plane does not want to land. It loves to float so you have to fly it down but watch your speed. I am going to mix in a little bit of spoileron to help it come down to the runway. I haven't tried the DLE 20 on this bird but the new version looks like it could handle it pretty well considering it has a firewall similar to bigger gassers with the box that you can mount the ignition and ignition battery to. Or you could also mount it in the large exhaust tunnel that this plane has. It's big enough to handle the stock muffler on my Evolution with no modification to the airframe. You may have to drill the hole in the center of the firewall a little bigger to accomodate the carb. I'm on the fence about swapping my Evolution out for the DLE 20. If any of you go through with it, let me know what you think. There are two things to watch out for with this plane. Glue joints and fuel proofing. Many glue joints towards the front of the plane look like they have not been glued. Definitely wick thin CA into those. The fuel proofing job done on this plane is very poor. Definitely go over it yourself so that you don't get fuel soaked. Sorry about the late posting of my maiden report. I've been flying a lot because of how much fun this plane is.

RE: Evolution 1.20NX quits on take-off
It's ok. I can use those #8s in other engines and what you said about the plug made sense to me. I think it was just a matter of the physical length of the plug. The Evolution super plug is roughly the same length as the type F plug. I think I had limited success with it because of the length but the heat of the plug might not have been right. Does anybody know what heat the Evolution GP01 super plug is? I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar to the #8.

RE: Evolution 1.20NX quits on take-off
Got it running!!! I had to richen the low speed needle, put new large bore fuel and muffler pressure lines on, remove the fuel filter (filtering from my bottle to my tank now) and believe it or not, I used an Evolution Super Plug. The OS #8 did not work well because it was too short for that engine. Something about the head design so it theoretically made sense and then attempting the #8 at the field with no luck confirmed it for me. I guess I can go chat in the Evolution success story thread now. My Extra is a hot rod with wings now! :-)

RE: Evolution 1.20NX quits on take-off
Thanks for the tips. My fuel is Wildcat Premium 15% with 18% oil content and I think %5 of that is castor. I'll check the fuel lines and I'll probably run it without a fuel filter too. I'll filter it from the fuel bottle instead. I plan to richen until I have good blue smoke and I'll try your plug suggestions too. Once all of this is done, I'll let you know how it goes.

Evolution 1.20NX quits on take-off
I have an Evolution 1.20NX in my Phoenix Models Extra 330s. I currently have an OS type F plug and am running 15% nitro fuel on it. I ran it the other day with no issues. Today, I could not keep it running to save my life. I checked the tune on the ground and had it tuned just right. However on take-off, it would quit every time. Any suggestions? Thanks.

RE: Evolution Glow Engine Success Story
I have an evolution 120nx mounted 45° down. The thing loves to backfire on me but with enough patience, I was able to get it running and get the carb tuned (I had to pull the set right stuff off of mine too). It now runs like a champ but every now and then it will hiccup and give me backfire problems again. I know that it is a tuning issue since the engine is very strong and reliable most of the time. I am suspicious that I have the low speed needle just a bit too rich. I am currently running 15% Wildcat premium blend (the premium means it has extra castor) with an O.S. type F plug. I'm not sure about my plug choice since it is a 4-stroke plug and all, but it seams to backfire less and have a stronger idle. Any suggestions? P.S. The 120nx has similar mounting dimensions to a Super Tigre 90. I have it in a 60-90 size extra currently and holy cow this thing will fly vertical forever! I love this engine and I'm very close to having it tuned just right so any suggestions would be very welcome.

My Vagabond kit arrived a few days ago. Unfortunately, the big mean man in the brown truck manhandled it a little too much and the rudder was damaged. A quick call to Blue Jay and another is on the way. I have to finish my current build and clean my work area a bit and then I'll be starting on this plane. On a side note, I am very impressed with the quality of wood in this kit! I will definitely be building another kit from Blue Jay. I'm thinking the Dirty Birdy will be a good choice.
