RE: Top Flite AT-6 Texan Gold Flight ARF
I bought the metal reinforcing frames and they do fix the problem with the plastic retract bodies breaking. Can't remember the man's name that sold them but he posted here on RCU about them. I think I have an extra set of them somewhere that I may be willing to sell. As for the wire gear I inserted a bolt with large washes on each side and a nut through the wire gear where it is wound to make the spring. This solved most of the bending of the gear. It is a beatiful plane in the air and worth the trouble to keep experimenting until the gear issue is fixed.

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Does anyone know if the cowl for the newer P47 30cc would fit the orginal H9 P47 150? I am thinking of ordering the replacement cowl for the newer plane and repainting it as the old cowl is discontinued. Any help appreciated.

RE: Horrible crash!
Definetly way to slow and not enough of an angle of attack on the landing approach. On a previous pass at about 30 seconds you can see the right wing dip because he was to slow, that time he was higher and throttled up. The full scale guy says not a stall and then talks about adding throttle if to slow in order to slow the descent and stablize the approach, if it talks like a stall, walks like a stall, and looks like a stall, must a been a stall. Seen alot of RC pilots try to go from trainers that we are taught to float in to big aerobatic planes or warbirds that will not float with the same result. Someone on the video is heard saying "you were to fast" !!!!, guess that is why the plane fell out to the sky?

RE: What might it be worth?
RCU has a buy and sell section with a market values tab, the prices given here are right in the ball park. Often unloading used RC equipment is a real chore, hard just to find a buyer much less get much money. Since your friend has no expense involved selling it to you I would lean to the low end, but since he has already given you other stuff maybe the high side is fair also. Anyway used RC stuff in my aera sells very cheap or even not at all, getting $400 here would be a good sale, but if the plane is perfect and the engine new $600 is also fair. However, staying freinds is worth more than $200 to either of you.

RE: Giant Scale crop dusters?
Having been in farming for most of my 65 years and active in RC for over 25 let me say that is the least likely scenario for RC control I have ever heard. The ag planes are huge, carry massive amounts of water and chemical and fuel. The pilots are better than airshow stunt guys and risk their lives daily. Some one mentioned depth perception and even spray coverage, very important issues. How does the RC full scale duster get to the correct field, where does it take off and land, are the water and chemicals trucked in for refill, etc etc. Dusters operate out of a private home base airfield set up speciffically for the care and maintencance of these type plans, water and USDA regulated chemicals are stored on site with equiptment to properly mix and load them on the planes. The field to spray may be dozens of miles or more from the home base and air time to and from the field, time spent applying over the field, and returning for refills all compute into the costs charged to a farmer. Having the planes RC controlled only complicates the process and does not make it more effiecent, safer. or less expensive. Having a small drone inspect a huge smoke stack is one thing, spraying hundreds of thousands of acres from the air is quite another.

RE: Why are we using NiMh...really?
I agree with you, got rid of all my NiMh about three years ago after all the same problems, for me main one is they don't hold a charge for long. Still using all Nicads for receiver packs and eneloops for my transmitter. However, picked up a DX8 for my indoor electric planes and it came with I believe a NiMH pack and it seems to work well, I do recharge it slowly though. It will get warm with the factory tx charger the radio came with so I take it out of the tx but leave it hooked up to the radio to recharge. I also am wanting to go all A123 someday but with 16 planes it is a big step for me. Also I was concerned about how to monitor how much charge remained in the 123 batteries but I hear they are coming up with ways to solve that problem. The Nicad reciever packs still are available from some online vendors but if that comes to an end will have to upgrade someday.

RE: Why the near obsession with over powering airplanes?
One could ask why some have an obsession complaining about people who "over power" their airplanes? Different strokes for different folks! If it is dramatically overpowered usually takes care of itself with a destroyed airframe and or destroyed engine. If it works out ok for the power hungry pilot so be it. Most of us love to see if not also fly fast aerobatic planes, as well as the nice scale stuff, there is room for both.

RE: Plane noses up for no reason
Just because no one else has mentioned it, and those are all things to look at, have you checked how the elelvator servo is mounted? Sometimes if in a servo tray the tray comes loose or the servo screws themselves and you can get the problems you describe. I would start with the pushrods and the serovs and linkages, the firewall and the engine mount. Then if everything is solid and functioning correcting look at surfaces etc. Have seen pushrod tubes that were initially well supprted have the supports come loose and teh rod flex in flight. Have seen servo trays slide back and forth a 1/2 inch when they broke loose maybe from a previous hard landing, etc etc. Keep looking, it usually is a problem you can find, if it flew well before and then changed something is casuing it.

RE: Club letter to local airports within five miles
5) when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the airport) with prior notice of the operation (model aircraft operators flying from a permanent location within 5 miles of an airport should establish a mutually-agreed upon operating procedure with the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the airport)). See word should in third line above. I defer to your expertise, however my 2 sons that are Federal agents and have had individuals prosecuted and convicted are aware of the distinctions. Not to say that will apply here.

RE: Club letter to local airports within five miles
Surprised that no one has noticed that the new law provision about establied rc sites contacting airports uses the term "should". Federal laws are writtten using 2 basic terms, SHALL and SHOULD. There is a very major difference in the requirements and the impact of laws based on those 2 distinctions. Time will determine how this plays out but from experience I take comfort in the fact that this was passed using the Should term. The lawyers for all sides will work this out in due course.

RE: fuel
Have used medium fuel line for clunks for years with no problems. Hayes tanks are the only way to go, once you try them you will never use anthing else. I agree with everyone else, in the air the nose down attitude won't be an issue, however failure to pull up will create alot bigger problem than fuel draw.

RE: Flyzone Albatros TX-R airplane - Don't buy it unless you have a computer radio
Another issue with the Anylink is that some transmitter models require one of the 4 optional cables to make anylink work. For exmple a DX8 requires cable TCM0005 WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE YET! None of the 4 optional cables are available, so if you have an Auroa 9 or a DX8 the "free' anylink you get with a Flyzone plane right now does you no good. Why can't Hobbico and Horizon get their acts together when they introduce new products? I know the problem is China supply line dependability but you would think they could do better.

RE: dx8 or HI-TEC AURORA 9CH
I have both the Auroa 9 and the DX8, they are both great. You won't go wrong with either. Why both? Got the Hitec first and have 25 planes on it, gas, glow, electric, no problems. Got back into indoor micros this year and decided to get the DX8 to go with my 6 micro bind and fly Parkzone planes. I love it. So will probably convert all my electrics, indoor and outdoor, over to the DX8. Love the Hitec 9 channel receivers on my scale warbirds and in many cases have used up all 9. I was not anxious to get back into 2 radio lines again but am glad I did.

RE: Need Help!!! Tygon vs Viton
I have been using Viton exclusively in 7 gas planes for over 2 years now, will never use Tygon again. No need to replumb the fuel system every year as I had to do with Tygon. Get mine from McMaster Carr sku 5119K4 1/8 in ID, 1/4 OD, 1/16" Wall Black. Not cheap though, last order was $3.85 per foot. Have been told of other sources for it by other giant scale gas guys that gave up on Tygon also, but I can't remember where they said they get it. It stays pliable unlike Tygon, gasoline doesn't seem to efffect it at all. Fuel line from lawn mower shops may also be an altermative.

RE: Red Fueling Valve
I use both the gas and glow Dubro Kwik-fill valves in both sizes in about 25 planes. I keep sets of rebuild kits on hand for each type that Dubro sells for a few bucks. Can replace the o-rings and spring and plunger in about 3 minutes with a t-pin. I have a friend that does it with the fueler still on the planes. Most of mine have been good for 3 to 4 years. Some say if one is sticking at the field a drop of oil in the valve may free it up enough to get by for the day. A filler with a stuck valve will let you fill the tank but won't let any fuel get to the carb when you try to start the engine. My son uses the dots and loves them. I just was never smart enough to make a 3 line tank work.

My post #8 did not suggest all castor oil fuel as you infer in post # 10. Let me rephrase, my expericence with fuels containing even some castor oil was resulting varnish. Like Red Head I have engines 25 years old run on nothing but Cool Power 15 % still working fine. Why is it the castor oil crowd, insists that only their opinion can be correct and refuses to acknowledge anyone else's expericences. This issue bores me and I will leave all to thier fixations.

I ran OS FP 40s on 15% Cool Power for years with no problems as did many other members in my club. All castor oil fuel did was varnish them up. Any engine can be run to lean but if tuned correctly the synthetic fuel worked just fine.
