RE: Glider Videos
with the ash-26 what hi-start are you using? and were is the tow hook placed in relationship to the retractable landing gear doors?

RE: Basic sailplane question
good to see your interest in silent flight. The spirit is some what of a floater. meaning it does not fly really fast but from experience it will thermal until out of sight. The asw-28 will take a bit more flying to keep it in the air as it will need to be flown faster to maintain a decent l\d. with your flight experience neither plane would pose a problem. I would however suggest a plane that has spoilers or flaps to help shorten the landing. with a glider you only get one shot to put it down, unless you like down wind landings. or alot of walking [;)]

which scale ship?
it's been awhile since I last posted but I'm back with questions. started looking for a new glider and I wanted something big. Most of the molded ships I found were way pricey and or very heavy. (I'm still with high starts but I can do planes up to 14 lbs.) so I took a look at some scale ships and I like what I saw. First off they look like they belong in the air. Second is they are just sexy. anyway I am down to two choices. I would like opinions on flight characteristics and such. I like the asw-22 but unless I can find a US dealer I am going to have to eat $305 in shipping. [:'(] The first pic is the asw-22 second pic is the asw-27.

wing loading vs. preformance ???
please help me with this. our local airport has deemed it nessisary to fence the whole lot in. while this does not hurt the power flyer it is really playing hell with the hi-start and winch lines. not being able to find a second sight to fly from i am forced to go to an e-plane. this in and to itself is not an issue what i can't get my head around is a really wild set of wing loadings. plane (1) is a thermik xl 4m. electric version comes in at 110 oz. aup. about 12 oz. per foot. plane (2) a thermik xl 5m electric version comes in at 214 oz. aup. about 21 oz. per foot. both plane share the same airfoil mh-32. my question is" can the mh-32 provide good lift at the 21 oz. wing loading. i admitt i like big but i can't seem to justify the weight penalty between the 4m to the 5m. remember this is mainly a thermal and xc ship.

if you have the $$. get the profi 4000. last radio you will ever need. after playing the upgrade game for many years i would have saved the $1000.00 price tag of the 4000 easily. glad I got one.

use xyz or simular
looking into a e-glider. the one I am looking at is from a good company that seems to have it's ducks in a row. When I plug in the suggested set up in to moto-calc I get very respectable numbers. The problem I am having is that the manufacturer suggests motor "xyz" or equivalent. With all the numbers and such it seems that there is no common grounds for a quick choice. For example with glow engines you get a range say .25 to .40 so it is a relatively easy task to filter your choices for comparison. This does not seem to be the case with brushless electrics. I find advertising blurbs like "for between 25 to 35 oz. planes" about useless because of the different demands of the varying air frames. Any help? Maybe the industry is still working on this. But right now it seems that the current naming systems leave much to be desired.

RE: Anyone using Polk Tracker III for FH Sailplanes?
aeajr, I've looked into the tracker III as my next radio but have found it limited in it's ability. For a sports flyer it's great but it can't do fancy mixes. If your friend is looking for something that will handle scale sailplanes and full house setups that call for all the mixing bells and whistles I would suggest going with a mutiplex profi 4000. After much research and comparisons I have found this to be the radio for the buck to beat all others. Everything is assignable and the mixes are almost endless. I realize that the unit is a bit pricey but If one can afford it up front you will not need another, so you save by not climbing the function ladder you know one unit leading to the next to the next ad-nauseum. I have just ordered one and can not wait to start programing the radio to do what I want as opposed to what the manufactures think I want.t.

xp 9303 questions?
Looking at getting the 9303 for my gliders. After reading through the manual if have a couple of questions. 1: Can the user change the stick mode if so is mode 4 available? 2: What shift does the rx need to be all of my rx's are futaba or hi-tec. is the shift selectable at the tx? I could live without the mode 4 but I would hate to replace my rx's

new tx
my hitec tx took a major dump and I find I need a new tx. I have futaba fp-t7ugfs that is almost adequate for my needs. I am considering either a futaba 9c (something or other) or the tracker III. My question is how good is the tracker manual. I need to do some complex mixing and I really don't want major head aches over it. An example of the mixing would be: in normal flight mode having aileron differential ( no biggie) but upon activating crow mixing to change the aileron differential so that only the opposite aileron droops but the turn direction aileron remains at its preset crow setting. Got it? so if the crow is set up for 15 deg. up aileron and I input left stick the left aileron stays put but the right aileron droops. I would also like to set up several flight modes i.e. launch, thermal and speed is this all possible with the tracker III?

RE: Mode 1 Flyers, UNITE!!
I like mode 4. It puts the rudder and elevator on my right thumb. I fly gliders and launch with my left hand. This setup lets me keep a finger where it is needed. (ailerons don't help much with a hi-start or winch)

RE: Hobie Hawk set up
O.K. just an update on the hawk. Alas it has cede to be.( This parrot is no more) I was out flying the other day and had a slightly rough landing nothing major but not as pretty as usual. Well I checked out the plane and everything seemed fine ( except the crack in the rudder control horn) on the next launch the hawk went up then to the right the I said oh sh!T!!! and it impacted the ground at a great rate of speed. All that is reusable is the fuselage the wings are in many pieces along with the stabs and rudder. At least I am thorough. Time to shop for a "new" hawk.

RE: whats a good wing loading for eppler 205?
sheeting goes to the back of the spar. On the top of the wing there are 1/4" cap strips behind the spar. The covering looks nice with no dips between ribs. I'll give it a try as is but will keep the turbulators in mind. As I have been lead to believe this plane will require a good amount of nose weight so I'll be pretty close to that 8 oz. per mark

whats a good wing loading for eppler 205?
I am almost done with a Sagittia 600. I built the wings with ailerons and flaps. Right now the plane is coming in with a wing loading of 7.2 oz. But this is before balancing. What would be a wing loading range for this airfoil?

RE: Thermic 2.5M
buy it you will love it. Built mine as a poly ship but I put 3 breaks in each wing and backed off on the over all poly angle a bit. Put spoilers in it or you will be chasing the thing all over. One other thing I did was to create a bigger gluing area for the stab by putting a piece of 1/4" triangle stock on each side of the tailboom.

is it the arf or the kit? If you have built anything before the arf is an easy project even without instructions. The kit you would need plans for unless you are a more experienced builder. If need be I could guide you through the arf. The kit would be to much for e-mail.

thanks for the info. It all falls in with what I remember reading, just needed to check my assumptions. I did wind up increasing the actual rudder by 15%. Can't see a problem with that out side on need less throw in a aileron coupled set up

balanced rudder?
I am currently building a Sagittia ( the 2 meter one) as was typical of airtronics it has a balances rudder. Personally on a 2 meter plane I don't see the need especially with ailerons. So the question is if I make the balanced part of the rudder ( the part forward of the hinge line) solid do I need th increase the size of the movable rudder surface?

the wings are in two pieces with an alum. and plywood joiner. If anything you will bash up the stab more than the wings during transport.

RE: Need help on 4 flap configuration
why not crow? I thought the effect of the ailerons going up while the flaps went down helped to counter the ballooning effect of the flaps. Also with the ailerons going up a bit are you not adding wash-out the the wing. With the ailerons deployed down with the flaps it would seem you are asking for a major tip stall. I'm curious because I''m setting up my first full house glider and need to know. Where I fly the typical landing includes an 180 deg. turn at about 35' to hit the spot. I don't need the wing to tip stall with no room for a bail out.
