riser wing tape
Hey Gang, hows the flying season going? I hate being busy during mine... Question; My Sig Riser had a slight mishap last summer and I'm in the process of repairing it. I bought it at an auction so I didn't realize this before, but the "wing tips," the part of the wings with the dihederal, are not permanently affixed to the wings! The had a dowel in the back and a tube in the main wing that a metal rod from the tip fit into. The previous owner used tape to hold the wing pieces together, color matched to the covering. Its about an inch wide. Does anyone know what kind of tape this is? Thanks

RE: can't make my futaba buddy box work
Thanks for the replys gang, yes I made sure the trainer function was on. I'm going to try it again following the manual instructions in order and EXACTLY as written, but I'm not very hopeful for sucess. When I looked in the manual it said it could perform trainer functions with a radio other than the 4yf skysport (4vf i think). Don't know if this is a huge deal or not. Would it matter if the skysport power sw was on?

can't make my futaba buddy box work
Hey Gang, I have a Futaba 6EXP and a Futaba FYF Skysport. I'm trying to use the skysport as a buddy box. The facts; Both radios hooked up skyport shows powered, but there is not battery in it receiver is a PCM 6 channel model (don't have the number right now) that came with it and is powered appropriately (6v) I use the 6exp and can manipulate the servos hooked up to my rx. When I hold the trainer sw i lose control on the 6exp after a moment, but do not gain it on the skysport. Whats up?

seaplane color for visibility
Hey Gang, hows the building season treating you? I purchased a Great Planes Super Decathlon 40 that has been in the hangar for a while. It needs some TLC, and some floats... I intend to strip off the covering and refurbish it. I was daydreaming of a color scheme of some shade of blue against white, using the standard Decathlon starburst pattern. And then it hit me. If I use blue won't it make it hard to see over/against the water? Thoughts?

RE: whats the best beginner traner kit to buy?
LT 40 with out doubt, I would also get a foam trainer (supercub from whoever) and fly it too. You could figure the sticks out before you get your pride and joy in the air. The foam is great. My stepson soloed a PZ Trojan last summer, this year it'll be the Kadet. Our T28 has been nose first into the dirt or in a tree or whatever else you can think of more times than i can count. Pick it up after the crash, dust it off, glue it together again and go fly. Great way to teach yourself. If you go with the built up trainer only, get an instructor and a buddy box. Some of the 2.4Ghz tech is relatively inexpensive now, I like the airtronics stuff myself. The instructors make all the difference. Good Luck!

RE: GP .40 Lear Jet build
I have used a robart drill jig, hinge glue and petroleum jelly for the hinges on my sig senior. After drilling the initial hole i used a dremel conical sanding bit to widen the drilled hole (control surface only) a bit so the "knuckle" of the hinge would sit inside the control surface, this prevented a large gap. The petrolium jelly prevents glue from gumming up the hinge, and the hinge glue is a aliphatic resign (wood glue) sold as hinge glue. I'm not sure if there is a special difference between it and regular wood glue. I couldn't find a link, got it at my lhs... Maybe someone who knows better than i could pipe up. I really like the robart hinges, and the process of installing them. Good luck. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXET65&P=7

RE: Lanier Sea Bird problem list
Thanks! I would guess the part where the Seabird starts to submarine is the bow wave. We'll see what I do with it. I can't help but think it needs a wider surface area on the bow, it almost looks skinny. I've heard the Herr Aquastar having problems getting off the water. It has a really skinny nose to, the answer to which was chines...

RE: Lanier Sea Bird problem list
I'm fairly new to the world of rc. I've just gotten to the point where I maiden my own stuff... I've built 4 planes and #5 is on the table, and has been for a while[8|] I can't guarantee anything I'll do will work or even be wise... On the other hand I've made some beginner mistakes and learned from them. From what I gather this one needs a face lift, big chines to wack the front off and build up a new "float" like structure out of balsa and foam. Something where the "edges" at the bottom are sharp not round. Maybe a wider surface too... Hull lifters and a sharp step at the back. I've used the microballoons before, it should be fun. I had the same thought as you, a 91 sized 4 stroke, I'll probably use a magnum or asp. I have a asp 21 on a sig wonder that runs very well. It will be a bit for me to get at this one, but with any luck it'll fly in the spring. Best of Luck.

RE: Lanier Sea Bird problem list
Thanks What can i do to improve the yaw issue? If a bigger fin will make it yaw/weathervane worse, does a bigger surface area in front help? You reviewed the Mariner, what keeps it from yawing? Is it a CG kinda issue? How close the motor is to the CG, etc? Maybe putting the motor out further. I've got glue/epoxy, microbaloons, balsa in all different sizes, and foam. I also have a saw[>:] it doesn't need to look like a seabird...

I don't doubt I'm headed for a rather rocky relationship, I just want to do it cuz its a challenge and cuz I can. I'll try the chines. What do you know about the yaw problem, is it in flight only or just on the water...

RE: Lanier Sea Bird problem list
The incidence thing, more microbaloons and epoxy? Or how about some flaps? I know technically those don't change incidence, but in a way they change the camber of the wing creating more lift. Is that the idea behind incidence? The wing is at a higher angle of attack thus producing more lift?

RE: Lanier Sea Bird problem list
Mr. Casey, I think I understand the sharp step idea you mentioned, some foam (pink stuff from the hardware store) epoxy and microbaloons I can handle. What about the size of the step? When I look at pictures of the mariner, its a pretty sizeable thing. It looks like a half inch or better. If I can glue to the abs, which it sounds like I can, would it be worth it to glue some foam to the bottom of the hull to make it a bigger step? What about the sides to increase the area of the "boat" portion of the hull? You mentioned "hull lifters." Are those the chines? Glueing to ABS, I think I know the answer to this, it has to be epoxy... Can I use anything else? This "turd" is heavy enough already... Minnflyer, my guess was that the larger surface would be harder to move through the air thus keeping it from yawing. On scale aircraft they call them vertical stabilizers... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_stabilizer I'm sure you've got some experience with this though, and before I go to a whole bunch of effort to learn the hard way, what can I do to help prevent the yaw problem? Its certainly done on other aircraft. Is this yaw problem a on the water kinda thing? I could add a "skeg"... Or how about I put the whole damn thing on floats[:D]

Lanier Sea Bird problem list
OK folks, I got a used Lanier Sea Bird at auction. Since then I've read some not so impressive things about this critter. Without bashing to badly, i.e. I need to be able to understand what the problem is aside from it being a turd, can former Sea Bird victims reply with the issues they've had with this "turd"... One looks to be the weight. Not sure what to do about that yet, aside from building a bigger wing... I also heard it won't fly straight? Thanks

RE: removing old monokote ?
I've used a heat gun to get off what I couldn't with a covering iron and peeling, but I never got all the covering off. Especially where the model appeared to have been repaired with CA and the CA came in contact with the covering. Good luck.

RE: Senior header tank
oops, sorry I see I point a couple posts ago that requires an edit. I said I'd try a 2oz with the regulator, what I meant to say was I'd try the 2 16oz tanks with the regulator. I agree, going down the same road I did before is not the best thing to do[;)]. I've wondering if I'm headed for a headache with the 2 16s but I can always just take one out if its a problem. Its not like I haven't packed and unpacked the nose of that senior a few times[8|]. So, two 16oz tanks with a iron bay regulator. Lazy day Senior flying and playing pass the box with my kid[:D] Thanks again for the help everyone.

RE: Senior header tank
Will do. I think I'll shy away from the walbro carb pump as it might take more figuring out than I want to do. I'll try the 2 oz tanks with an Iron Bay regulator and see how it goes. 32 ounces should be more than enough to get my son and I both some stick time. The 16oz tank will also let us put some more stuff up front which will help w my portly seniors heavy aft end. Thanks again
