RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Naswifty... The original designation for the twin fuse mustang was P-82 it was later changed to F-82. I have a P-82 T _ _ _ T in the preliminary stages. My last twist came in with minor wing damage and the supplier sent me replacement. I now have 2 slightly damaged spare wings to hack up for this project. My plan is to configure the wings to where I can remove the P-82 wing and install the single wings so that I will still be able to fly them separately. If everything goes well I will be able to switch from 2 single T _ _ _ Ts to one double T _ _ _ T in only a few minutes. Thats the plan anyway. We will have to wait and see if it works out that way. Still haven't settled on how to do the stabs. Maybe a removable clip to join them together. Currently trying to decide on the proper spacing between the fuses and repairing the wings. Work is becoming an annoying distraction from my hobby. Waldo... Sorry to here about your loss. you shloud be able to put it back together in your sleep by now. The bipe damage looks cool. I think the NTSB would call that a near miss. The rest of us would call it a near hit.[:D] Great that you both were able to get back down safe. BendeR... Don't listen to the weatherman... he lies!!!! I gave up on mine a long time ago. I do a better job. WizzBang... Hangar 9 just came out with basicaly a high wing T _ _ _ T called The Tango. It has a T _ _ _ T wing in a high wing configuration. You can check out the video of it on Horizon's site. It should give you an idea of how a high wing T _ _ _ T would fly. They are suppose to be out next month. I have one with my name on it. Glad most of you got to go fly today. It was a beautiful day here, light winds but hot as heck 103F in the shade. I had to work so no flying today. I didn't get far from the A/C today. It was almost dark when I got home. Need to rig one of the T _ _ _ Ts up with lights to fly at dusk. Will be at the field rain or shine tomorrow. T errific W hen I n S piral T wist

Thanks to everyone for all the well wishing. It really means a lot.[:)] Here is an update on my injury... it hurts.[:D] Just kidding, it seems to be healing fine. It really does hurt but the I don't care pills the nice doctor gave me are vorking wery vell. Jinxx... 15 is just a good starting point. Play around with it till you find the position that works for you. I'm going to give that prop a try. Where did you get yours? opjose... Now how did you know it was an APC prop.[:D] They are very sharp. 15 to 20 is what the Doc said I would have gotten if there had been something to put them in. I was almost disappointed. I go in with half my thumb hanging off and come out with only 4 stitches. Whats up wit dat. Smooreace... Yeah, my wife says the same thing. I just kept doing flybys until she got something. She did get the dead stick landing on video and I didn't even tell her to do it. It was scary. She did get her normal quota of shots of the ground, the trees and the sky without my plane in it. At least she does try and thats what I love about her. Washguy... Yep, when she said she wanted to go I should have stayed. I thought she was being sweet but then I found out she only went so I would take her to lunch on the way home. Again, thank you all for your concern.

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
Hi everyone! I know this is a nubie question but then I am a nubie. I just bought my nephew a Volcano STX for his B-Day. I can't seem to get it started. I followed all the instructions, such as they are, but it still won't start. Is there something I'm not doing right are is there something wrong with the truck. I've pulled on the rope until I rubbed one of my fingers raw. Is there a better way? Thanks! -Andy

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Today was one of those should have slept late then got up and mowed the lawn days...well no, come to think of it, couldn't even have done that. Got up at 5:30 did the morning routine S.S.S. (military guys know this) had the truck packed and ready to go at 6:30. The wife, who never wants to go flying with me, decides she wants to go today and so does her nephew. So I'm thinking, ok the more the merrier and I'll have some one to take some pics to boot. Well, all of us married guys know how long a wife can take to get ready. I finally get them in the truck at 8:15 get to the field by 8:30 get unpacked and realize I had left the transmitter at home. So, I sent the wife back for it while I got everything set up. She, of course, had to make a couple stops along the way. I finally get in the air around 9:30. The wind had come up by then but not too bad and it was straight down the runway. The temperature was way up though. man it was hot today. I took the T _ _ _ T up first no probs it flew great. The landing was perfect. Took the P-51 up next. It flew great too. It's landing was perfect as well. It looked like the flying would make up for the day's rough start. Thats what I thought anyway. Next time out with the P-51 it seemed to struggle to get up to speed. I pushed it to full throttle and It took off, climbed out and when I made the first turn on the pattern the engine died and I had a dead stick at about 70ft. I engaged the flaps and that held her up long enough to get her turned back into the wind for a nice soft landing on the grass. I find out that for some reason it had leaned way out since the first flight. I richened her up and back in the air she went. This time she flew perfect. Came in for a touch & go and a freak cross wind gust almost flipped her. I decided that was enough. Packed up and went home. Remember I said something about mowing the lawn. When I got home my son wanted to mow the lawn. That alone should have been a sign. I of course said "sure, be my guest". Well, he couldn't get it started. So I gave it a try and sure enough, on the second pull the rope broke. Ok fine. Forget mowing the lawn I'll tinker with the engine on the P-51 and try to find out why it leaned out on me. Fired it up and notice the ratchet on the needle was a little loose. Shut it down, tightened it up put the screwdriver in my shirt pocket. I tell you I put the screwdriver in my shirt pocket because it plays a major role in what happens next. Fire the engine back up, ran it up to do a pinch test and as I lean over to do the pinch test the screwdriver slips out of my shirt pocket.[X(] I quickly grab for the screwdriver to keep it from falling into the prop but I miss. Only it's not the screwdriver that hits the prop, its my thumb.[:@] So, 2 hours at the emergency room, only 4 stitches because my thumb was so mangled it was all he could get to stay in. Taped the rest of it together, splinted it, wrapped it and told me not to move it for three days. Come to find out that the Doc that fixed me up flys r/c planes too. What are the odds of that? So, as I sit here typing this post slowly with one hand, recounting the events of today I'm tempted to say "maybe I should have stayed in bed". Only tempted though because I did get to go flying today and I wouldn't have missed that for the world. Today wasn't my best day but I sure hope it was my worst. Anybody got a neckstrap I can borrow for my transmitter, its going to be a little while before I can use my thumb again.[:D] Thought you might find my day interesting.

[quote]ORIGINAL: opjose There is an easy fix for this. Adjust the tail wheel gear so that the plane sits more level than it does now. The "flatter" the angle or incidence of the plane to the runway the less it tends to ground loop or yaw on takeoff. You do want some positive incidence, but lowering the amount has a rather dramatic effect. [/quote] Thanks opjose! I'll give it a try. When you took the flywheel weight off, what did you use to keep the spacing between the spinner and the cowl? NitroSS... My official weather forcast for you is a beautiful day. Light winds in the morning increasing to about 5 mph by 10:00am and 10 to 12 mph by noon. Partly cloudy with a high of 93. Closest Rain to you is north Central KY moving West to East. Looks like a great day to go flying.[:D] Here is a link to a great place for wind forcasts. Closest it gets to you is Clarksville and Nashville but should still be fairly accurate. [link]http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&sta=KBNA&model=avn&state=TN[/link] I agree with stallwart, only difference should be throttle response. You can always move your battery a bit forward to compensate. I still have mine on. I'm running a MAS 10X6 but will be trying a APC 11X6 today. Stallwart... Thanks for the info. Its not that big of a deal, just wanted to know if anybody else was having the same prob. It just seemed a little excessive. My P-51 kicks left a lot more than any of my other planes. I can keep a little up elevator and it tracks true all the way but it lifts off without the tail coming up first and that doesn't look as cool. You have about the same weather forcast as NitroSS except clear skys and 97 for the high and the wind may pick up a little sooner for you. Here is your link. [link]http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&sta=KLIT&model=avn&state=AR[/link] Yep! If you've got an engine you have to get a plane for it! Thats why My wife won't let me buy any engines. [:D] Hope everybody gets to go fly and have fun today.

RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
Jinxx... Beautiful! The plane looks great. When you take the droops off it will become quite an agile plane. Your going to love it. The flaps make the landings nice and slow and it takes off in half the distance. I would start with about 15 degrees. Your radio should let you have more than one flap setting. You may want to mix in some down elevator with your flap switch to keep it from ballooning when you engage them on approach. I don't have mixing in my radio so I just engage them early. Love the spinner. What size prop are you using? NitroSS... The brakes mounted that way won't make any difference to the way the plane flys as long as they stay straight. The epoxy should make sure of that. Just make sure there is enough clearance between the top of the speed brake and the wing to allow for the gear flex when you land and not poke a hole in the wing. I have seen a lot done that way with no problems. I haven't gotten around to doing mine yet. Yours looks great! It looks alot better than the bare wire. What size prop and spinner are you using?

Yes, balance every thing. The less force you have to counter act with trim the better. A prop balancer is a very good investment too. Most props are off a little and balancing increases engine life. PA BEN... Did you have to do a lot of shoe horning to get that monster in? Anybody having a problem with their P-51 vearing to the left on the takeoff roll from engine torque? I counter with rudder but wonder if mine is the only one. If I run up slow and use the whole runway its not a prob but if I run up fast to try a quick takeoff its a big prob. Our Field

RE: Help me choose a new plane
Don't worry David714, you are going to love the Twist. I have 2 twist pnps and they are a blast to fly. The .46 engine is a little under powered for 3D, but for fun flying it has more than enough. I can take it vertical right off the runway and it hits 150 feet before it falls out of it. It can do some pretty agressive manuvers on high rates and float in like a trainer for a landing on low. For me, it was easier the fly than my trainer. There is a very long thread devoted to just Twists were you can get all the info you could ever want. Check it out. RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
[quote]ORIGINAL: smooreace I dont understand "accidental"! you bid early for no reason at all except to make the price go up prematurely, and then pay to much for everything in the end. Iv e spent probably close to to $20000 on ebay since its start and have only lost MAYBE 3 auctions, and have NEVER paid more than my first decided high price when I see the auction start. People bidding any more than a few hours from the auction end cant be bidding for success, their only bidding to cost others more. In a live auction tahts fraudulant bidding and is grounds for a ban from future auction. [/quote] Smooreace, let me try to explain: An accidental win on ebay, at least where washguy and I are concerned, is a win that 1. You really didn't think your bid was high enough to win but bid anyway and won, 2. You only bid one bump up from the other persons bid knowing he will probably out bid you but then he doesn't. But to be a truely accidental win they both have to be without the wife's permission. Thats what makes it accidental, at least thats what we tell the wife anyway. So ssshhh before she hears you. So you see, nothing sinister here. However to take you to task, its only fraudulant biding if the bidder never intended on making the purchase and intent is a hard thing to prove. Back before automatic bidding came along, last minute bidding was how you won an auction. So I don't know how you can say bidding at the last minute is just being malicous. I remember when Ebay first started, I had to get more memory for my computer so I could open up more windows of the auction to make faster last minute bids in case somebody out bid me. You couldn't set a price and it bid it for you everytime you were out bid. Back then it was exciting, stressfull and sometimes infuriating. In a word... FUN. I won't even place a bid on an item until the day it closes. That way I can gauge if its in my price range and not waste time on it. I bid on auctions to get the lowest price and thats my first bid, but if I decide its something I really want I'll bid more. Actually IMOO automatic bidding has taken the fun out of auctions. In my case with the Twist I bid one bump up which was like a $1.75 with a day and a half left to go and the price was way lower than they had been going for so I never dreamed the bid would hold. Did I maliciously up the bid $1.75? No I really wanted the plane I just didn't have the wife's ok, but the price was too good not to try. Even if I had to sleep on the couch. Now, if I didn't really want the plane and just bid on it because I didn't want somebody to pay less than I did for the same item, then that would be fraudulant bidding. Its all about intent. I doubt that its a very big problem because it could get quite expensive very quickly. You don't know if anyone will out bid you if you do bump it up and then your stuck buying something you didn't want or getting in trouble for not paying for it. I don't know if you could reliably do it or not but you defintely couldn't do it for long. So you made an assumption about people you don't know, doing something you don't understand and passed judgement on both. That's a really bad habit to have in this medium. Jumping to conclusions can be damaging to your character. If you had stopped at "I don't understand accidental", it would have saved us from feeling accused of doing something wrong and me a lot of typing. Sorry about the long post guys, I just hate to be accused of something I didn't do. Anyhow, PA BEN... Great looking plane, love the TAZ and the TAT. Washguy... yeah I know all about those accidental wins on ebay. Thats how I ended up with my 2nd Twist, and the extra fuselage for the P-51. But its all good, I got plenty of spare parts for when I get stupid. Speaking of spare parts, I had a very rough landing awhile back that ripped one of the landing gear blocks out of the original wing. Hmmm... might be good retract project material, since I have to replace the blocks anyway might as well hack it up to put in some retracts. Hmmm... I've got 2 spare fuselages, I might be able to put together a P-82 PTS. Oh yeah, twin P-51s that would be cool. Sorry typing out loud again. Yep, If you have the engine you've got to build a plane for it. My problem, I have too many planes and not enough engines. RCHubbub... Thanks for the info. I think your numbers are pretty close. I know when I put the 10-6 on top speed increased dramaticly. I'm going to try it with the 11-6 this weekend weather permiting. A lot of rain here lately.

RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
Hey Washguy, now your going to make me spend more money. Got to get me a .55 now.[:D] I got a good deal on the RTF version. Had some light damage but nothing major. I flew it the first few times with the stock 3-blade and was not happy. The thing was so slow I almost couldnt fly it. Put a 10-6 2-Blade on her and WOW! it was a totally different plane. It screamed! I tried a 12-6-2 but I lost topend speed. Low end speed was fine I could fly around at 1/3 throttle no problem and like you said, landings were like a feather. I guess the stock .45 trainer engine just doesn't have enough torque to swing that 12-6. So I,m going to spend more money for a .55 because that 12-6 MAS just looks so good on this plane. But if you got the stock engine the 10-6 is the way to go. On the ARF version are the engine mount holes pre-drilled and if they are did you have to drill new ones for the .55 or did it match up?

RE: Tango ARF
If it flys anything like it's older sibling, The Twist, then it will fly great. It looks like it has the Twists wing but I don't know how well it will to up on top like that. Up-right flat spins should be easy but I don't think it will roll as well. I guess I'll have to get on and see. I love my Twist. It will do anything you want but is still surprisingly docile at slow speeds and landing. If this plane has any of those characteristics, then it will be worth the money. MAndren... Will the Tango's wing interchange with the Twist? Here's a pic of my Twist for comparison. [image][/image]

I can relate to the losing your flying field. We will be losing ours soon. Too many houses going in too close to be flying gas and glow. Electrics should be ok if they'er not to big. I hope we find a new one soon but as you can see from the photo below, I'm not going to miss it too much. Its a very tight field. I hope your club gets a new one soon too. RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Bratpak... That is an odd sized prop. It is wider than the other standard props so no spinner will fit it. Unless it becomes extremely popular, they are not going to make one that will. Its all about the money. Not enough of these props selling to warrent tooling up to make a spinner that fits. Why they didn't make the center of the prop narrower so it would fit a standard spinner is my question. I tried to make the spinner that came with my T _ _ _ T fit but I would have to remove the prop stops or cut into the alining dowels. So I'm going to go up one size and modify it. I also recommend using a prop balancer to balance the spinner after the mod. Thats a good tool to have anyway. I was suprised at how far off balance some props could be. BendR... 10-4 on the much gooder! (Glow fuel will give you Dain Bamage and make your grammer bad)[:D] Just kiddin, we say more gooder here. You could fly in that field, just tell them its a really cheap and old electric and thats why it so loud and smokes.[:D] Warning: Flying a T _ _ _ T can cause you teeth to get sun burned [:D]

BendR.... Nope, never been to Camp Bondsteel. Only know what I've read about it, which is how I know you have SEA Huts. SEA Huts are way better than tents and all Army wall lockers are tiny. The ones we had 20 years ago were tiny, old and smelly.[:D] So I guess your keeping it under your bunk. How high up the chain did you have to go to get the ok to get it? That's one heck of a lady you got there. Nitro Dew... Another vote for screws. Packing tape works great till you can find screws. Waldopepperaxel... We seem to be having a similar problem. I can never get anyone to go with me to operate the camera. Maybe I'm flying too early in the morning. Finally got to go flying this weekend. Got up early, loaded up and headed to the field. When I got to the field there was a good 5 to 10 mph crosswind which meant I had the field to myself. By the time I got unloaded and set up the wind had kicked up to a steady 10mph with gusts to 12 to 14. No problem for the T _ _ _ T it liked it. I would pull it into a vertical stall and let the wind push it backward twisting while it did. Then I did some almost vertical touch and go's. The T _ _ _ T is about the only plane I would consider flying in that strong of wind. Had to cut the fun short as a thunderstorm showed up and rained on my parade.

BendR... Great Job! It Looks great!!!. Where ya storing that puppy? Not a lot room in them SEA Hut wall lockers.[:D] Don't forget to get clearance from the tower before you takeoff.[:)]

Mr. Pepper.... Brilliant bit of deduction Mr. Holmes. Spot on ole man spot on.[:)] Nope, no re-cover just the way the light was hittin it. I love the transparent purple covering on the underside of the wing. It makes it so easy to spot damage. The green and white on top grows on you. Could be those of us who buy the PNP's might feel a little guilty about not putting in all the long hours of build time and therefore are not posting pics of their planes.... but I doubt it, we would just rather fly them.[:D] I'll post more of mine in the future. BendR.... That seems to be a common problem. Seem the better you package something, the harder they try to break it. Great job on the repair. Looks great. Did they ask for the damaged wing back? If not then WooHoo! Hey, you've got two wings now. You can Build a Bipe too! [:D] Ok, we have Skukreja building a Bipe-T _ _ _ T and Mr. Pepper is going to build a Tripe-T_ _ _ T. Who can we get to build a Twin-T _ _ _ T. Put a couple .46s or .61s on it. What about a Tri-Power T _ _ _ T. (Tim the Toolman Taylor Grunts) That would be a site. [:D]

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Waldo, yep thats a PNP T _ _ _ T. Them some mighty fine eyeballs you got there. I didn't have any build experience and I'm somewhat impatient, so it was the perfect plane. I have a couple of flat-outs and a foamy to get my feet wet in the building department. Then I have a Transall C-160 ARF with twin .25s to graduate with. I'm in the Sod business so not a lot of free time this time of year and I would rather spend the little time I have flying. Yes, that was a very beautiful field! Over 65 acres of nice soft 3" thick Kentucky Bluegrass 2,200 ft above sea level and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the back ground. Located between Hendersonville, NC and Brevard, NC just inside Transylvania county. A local sod farm lets the local club fly there and they were kind enough to let let me fly too. They have 2 rules. Rule 1: Don't park on the grass. Rule 2: See rule 1.[:)] The tall grass made it kind of hard to take off but every landing was nice and soft. The best part was that with all the open space it didn't matter which way the wind was blowing. You could always land into the wind. By late morning the wind had picked up to about 12 to 14 mph. Did that bother the T _ _ _ T? Nope! It flew like it was made for it. I was even able to do near vertical landings. This is an amazing plane. That field was a real treat. Our field here in Kingsland, GA is very tight. We have a nice 50'x 300' runway but tall 80' pine trees all around and only a 400' x 1000' opening. Thats about all there is in SE Georgia, pine trees.[&o] I envy all you fellas in the wide open spaces. Andy

RE: Hangar 9 Twist 3D Part II - Thread Continuation
Greetings from SE Georgia fellow T _ _ _ ters. I have been reading the thread for a while now and you guy are a wealth of knowledge. I've had my T _ _ _ T for about 3 months now and there is no better plane in my book. I started flying in January with a Hobbyzone Super Cub. Cheap and easy to fix. Then went to the H9 P-51 PTS. Flew that for a couple months and got the T _ _ _ T. It was easier to fly than the trainer P-51 and a lot more fun. The T _ _ _ T is the kind of plane and flying that I wanted to do when I got into this hobby in the first place. Can't wait to move up to the 60. Just wanted to jump in and say Hello! I do have a question. If the thead is so large that they had to break it into part 2, why don't they just give you your own forum? Anyways keep it up, all us new T _ _ _ Ters need you. -Andy If it comes though here is a pic of me on vacation in Transylvania, NC flying my T _ _ _ T [image][image]

RE: P-51 PTS question
I agree, it is apples and oranges. The efficiency of a prop is relative. Relative to what you are wanting to get out of the prop. Are you wanting speed or vertical lift? Do want fast acceleration and high rpm like for a pattern plane or gut wrenching torq to hang a 3D on at 1/4 throttle. How efficient the prop is, depends on what you want it to do. The comparison I like to use for 2 vs 3 or more blades is the difference between a gas engine vs a diesel engine. A 300hp gas engine and a 300hp diesel engine have the same hp but are two very different animals. The gas engine has fast acceleration and high rpms and the car goes fast but if you hook it to a 2000 pound trailer it stuggles. The diesel has slower acceleration but more torq at lower rpms. It will pull the trailer without breaking a sweat but its not going to win any races. With 3 & 4 bladed props you have more blades digging in to the air so more torq or pulling power at lower rpms and a little slower throttle response. That is what H9 wanted for their trainer. Now the downside is the at higher rpms 3 & 4 blade props start to kind of catch up to themselves. The blade behind is passing through the disturbed air from the blade in front and becomes less "efficient"[:D]. There is not enough time between blade passes to let new air in between to bite into. Which keeps the top speed down, something else H9 wanted on the PTS. First you have to decide what you want your plane to do, then you can start making engine and prop choices. Actually you need to first decide what kind of flying you want to do and then decide what plane to get. The P-51 PTS is a great trainer and intermediate plane and will do basic aerobatics but the dehydril keeps it from doing them as clean as a 3D or pattern plane. For that kind of flying I fly my Twist 40 or my Kaos 40. Choose a plane for the type of flying you want to do. Trying to get a plane to fly in a way it wasn't designed for is asking for heartache. In Showtime100's case, he wants the cool look of a 4 blade prop without sacrificing a lot of performance. The problem with a 40 size plane is the choices are few on 3's and almost non-existent on 4's. There seem to be more multi-blade prop choices for larger planes. I'm looking for a good 4 blade for my PTS as well. A nice black one so I can dip the tips into yellow paint for that cool authentic P-51 look. I don't care if it goes fast or has a lot of verticle. I just want it to look as good on the ground as it does in the air. As for choosing an engine, the argument for 2-stroke vs 4-stroke is just as fierce. But in my own opinion good rule of thumb is for 4-stroke you need to go up 2 to 3 sizes from a 2-stroke. Correct me if I'm wrong guys, I've never used a 4-stroke. I have been pleased with the evolution engines so far. I have three in my planes and they start easy everytime and run flawless. Most of the others in my club use O.S. and they seem to just as reliable. So, if you have your heart set on a 4-stroke then I would go with the biggest one you can shoe horn in at least a .60. Go buy the only 40 size 4-blade prop your LHS has in stock (if they have one) I'd say a 10x4x4 or 10x6x4 but thats just a guess. Your choices are going be very limited on props but no your not barking up the wrong tree. -Andy PS: Sorry for the long post. I tend to ramble. (too much free time not flying)
