RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
Three photos from this weeks fly-in, I got four more flights on the Spitty. I had to replace the 1/4" diameter 4" long hardware (cheap) grade engine mounting bolts that go through the firewall, thru maple standoff to the engine mounting lug with grade 6 or 8 bolts as the cheap one were breaking where the thread ended on the shaft, never had that happen on any of my planes before and I used the same mounting system, I wonder if that heavy spinner backplate is a contributing reason. Landings are getting better with about 50 to 60 degrees of flap. This winter I'll add the tail wheel doors and the cannons. cheers - ken [image]http://spitfire9.com/kkbuild/Gimli_2012_-__0039_2.jpg[/image] . RE: Yellow Aircraft (YA) Spitfire build by Kenair
HI, thanks all, I used about about 1.5 - 1.75 pounds of nose weight, hard to say if the built up tail made that big difference, it helped, All my servoes and batteries are on double level trays at the c of g or ahead of the c of g and that helped to keep the nose weigh down, though the double level trays make servicing (like a loose motor mount bolt) a pain as I have to move the trop tray to get to the inside rear of the firewall. I'm pretty pleased how nice it flies on it's first flights, can't wait to get it back in the air. cheers - ken

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
I'm happy to report that this morning, the maiden flight (finally) of my YA Spitfire MKXIV went very well. In all three flights were completed and the snag list has a few minor items. The DLE 55 ran very well using a Zinger 22x6-10 cut down to 21". Gross weigh less fuel is 25#-14oz, CG is at 5" - 5/8". Landings with 1/2 flap was predictable and stable. Snags are: air leak on right main gear cylinder - O ring must be hard, tail wheel steering very sloppy, JR statellite rx mount came off the fuselage inside, air pressure guage on instrument panel too hard to see, will remount on fuselage side. I will have to add the cannons and the lg doors soon! cheers - ken Three photos after the test flight. . [image]http://spitfire9.com/kkbuild/IMG_0623.jpg[/image]. . RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
Hi, I have not sorted out my DL 50 issue so I bought a new DLE 55 for the Spittie but I plan to get 8 to 10 flights on the new DLE 55 in my Extra 300 before installing it in my YA Spitfire, thus I'm 4 to 6 weeks away as the spring weather here has been windy and cool. Another DL 50 I bought used this winter off the web as a back up has developed a case leak. I was running it up in the Extra 300 so I'm working through that one too. cheers -ken

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
March 31, 2012 - A fantastic spring day by Winnipeg standards, +18C, I brought up the Spitfire from the basement for an engine run. The DL 50 engine has not been run in two years since it was taken out of an Extra 300. The DL 50 was hard to start, I had to prime it three time, and ran hot, quitting after three minutes at 1/2 to 3/4 power. with the cowl off too. I will have to troubleshoot this engine snag. I also have an air leak, otherwise all the other systems worked ok. I has a $50 off code from Tower Hobbies and ordered a new DLE 55 as a back up, our flying season is too short to be grounded with a balky engine. cheers - ken . RE: Yellow Aircraft (YA) Spitfire build by Kenair
The MPI charge switch is for the DL50 ignition module. The other two are the JR charge jacks. Keep in minds your are looking only 8" away from the fuselage, from a few feet away they blend in quite nicely and when the plane is in the air, well you get the idea.....KISS to a point. cheers - ken

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
Good to hear you are getting more flights on your Spittie, I wish to share my air valve and DL 50 plastic choke rod install. the air valve is from Hobby King and at $5.99 is a good price, I left it charge with air for 48 hours with no leakage. Both are installed in the exhaust stacks. Spittie now 95% complete, on target for a late May test flight! cheers - ken . [image]http://spitfire9.com/kkbuild/IMG_1916.JPG[/image] . RE: Yellow Aircraft (YA) Spitfire build by Kenair
Hi, just over a year since my last update, what a great flying summer we had in Manitoba and the return of the Winnipeg Jets has been exciting. I've got 90% of the painting done. I needed 1.2 pounds of lead to balance, in keeping the servoes ahead of the C of G helped with the amount of lead need to balance this bird. The all up weight less fuel will be 25 lb, 15 ounces. I ran a plastic push rod for the DL 50 choke through one of the exhaust stacks, I also installed the Hobby King air filler valve in the adjacent exhaust stack. All or the control surfaces push rods are hooked up. Thus we are looking ahead to a test flight in May, one the frozen tundra is thawed up here in the great White North. cheers - ken . Happy New Year! I plan to have my YA Spitfire ready for this spring! If ok with you guys, I like to use some of your posted photos on my Spitfire site [link=http://spitfire9.com/]Spitfire9[/link], guys are always looking for information on Spitfire builds, engines used, weights, etc. This summer I re-engined my Dynaflite Spitfire froms a US 35 to a DLE30, the extra power has made the Dyna Spit into a new airplane for me. All the best in 2012, cheers - ken . [image]http://spitfire9.com/2011-12-31_update.jpg[/image] . [image]http://www.upaero.com/spitfires/spit_lf_r.JPG[/image]

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
HI, HI, I also posted this in a separate thread, however some of you maybe subscribed to this thread and don`t read RCU often - thanks ken . The Yellow Aircraft (YA) Spitfire Spinner has a heavy backplate, mine is 14.2 oz. What are the upsides and downsides at this weight. Some have milled their backplates to reduce the weight, however is there many who have flown with a stock backplate, any feedback on flying with a heavy backplate. I`m getting late in the season and am thinking about flying my YA spitfire with the stock spinner backplate and a DL 50. Appreciate your comments and opinions thanks in advance - ken kalynuk I also posted this question in RCU

HI, what is the CG postion you decided on at the end? If you have a Zinger 22x6-10 bring that along too, I used that prop on my two Top Flite P-51's and find it flies those P-51's at a nice speed with out loading down the Brison 3.2's. Cheers - ken
