RE: 5b 2.0 comes with Zen engine from factory
HobbyThek offers to upgrade stock engine on a HPI Baja 5b to a G260 for 140 Euros at the time of purchase. Strange their not offering the G270 now that it is out. I once chatted with a HobbyThek employee and asked about the stock engines that are removed. The guy said these are sold at the shop to those looking for a good price on a base engine. Pretty cool option to have.

Awesome onboard footage! It helped having the "outboard" footage to compare it to [;)] I wonder if a camcorder with image stabilization would help with the vibration? It gives the footage an edgy feel but it would be nice to see smoothed out also.

RE: vs/nutech hurricane c5 ??
Hey Pwaicon, is that an FG 8485 diff in the center? I have that as a rear diff in my Firehammer. If so, its interesting how that diff designed for rear wheel drive just drops right in as a center diff.

RE: Guys whats wrong with my car
If there is any kind of firing sound from the engine, even if slight, then the kill switch is probably not stuck or bad. I drilled a small hole in my kill switch cover and put a small machine screw in it. If it gets stuck just pull on the screw head to free it.

RE: Guys whats wrong with my car
Grass will get sucked in the pull start fan area and another inlet under the engine. This grass will fill up the area behind the fan shroud (cover the pull start is screwed on to) and also into the cooling fins of the head. This would not directly cause a "won't start" problem but it can cause a lot of heat in the head and head gasket because the fan airflow is choked off. An Outerwears pullstart cover is a great investment to cut down most of the grass getting in there. Others here have glued mesh over the holes under the crankcase to keep crap from getting in there. A pullstart cover will take care of most of this problem. Look at the line created by the head gasket and see if it is black anywhere, especially on the exhaust-side of the engine. This might indicate a bad seal and oil seeping out. This seepage mixed with dirt will look like dark clay.

RE: on road clone for desperate times
There's a nice looking used on-road car in the RCU classifieds. It has an Mercedes body shell and is selling for $500. It is a lesser known, good brand (SVM). It may be compatible with FG parts. It has alloy A-arms which could make it a little forgiving on crashes. http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=505826

RE: firehammer discontinued??
Duratrax will provide parts for several years. I picked up an old Associated RC10T and can still get parts from Tower Hobbies. That said, there are many parts for the FG Marder that are interchangeable.

RE: took a break, but now?
The 4WD Smartechs are not straight FG clones like their 2WD models. The Smartech Titan uses shaft drive while the FG is belt driven. There are other considerable differences. There are several experienced gasser-owners who can share the Smartech Titan (or 4WD buggy) experiences.

RE: air cleaner
If your engine uses a Walbro-brand carburator then it is highly likely that any of the air cleaners from HPI, FG, Duratrax, etc. will fit on the carb. The next problem will be clearance to support the depth of the air filter you want. The Duratrax Firehammer buggy air cleaner is widely regarded as the best at keeping junk out of the engine. It uses a dual foam element design. Every time I have cleaned my filter the outside foam element is filthy but the inside foam element is almost perfectly clean. You can order the Firehammer air cleaner from any hobby shop that sells Duratrax or from Tower Hobbies. It sells for about $17 - $20. Here's a link to it on Tower: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHTX0&P=Z

RE: How to adjust adjustable diff for FG?
According to a guy at HobbyThek the 8485 locking mechanism is very poorly designed and has a very non-linear slip adjustment. I run my 8485 fully locked down. The best way to go with these diff is the vicous type where you can use different fluids to adjust the slip.

RE: On-road body for DTX Firehammer?
There are many on-road bodies from FG. You may need to remove the rollcage for it to fit right. You will also have trouble with body mount posts. I'm not sure if width will be a problem. To get an idea for on-road bodies you can visit http://www.rc-car-online.de/htstarteng.htm. This is the online store for a German shop called HobbyThek. They are the largest retailer of gassers and have a lot of bodies for sale, painted and unpainted. The also have kits of pre-mounted wheels and tires and gear sets. Their shipping is really high (minimum $40 to the US). You could check out bodies there and then go to a US supplier of FG like LargeScaleRC.com to find out what can be bought in the US.

RE: 1/5 scale new bright buggy questions
I have studied the New Bright buggy at Target. It looks pretty nice for $100 but there is NO source for replacement parts. Being an open wheel design and large scale it will be very easy to break plastic suspension arms that support the wheels. Once you break one of the these parts you will have a $100 door stop. For $120 you could buy a 1:10 scale Duratrax Evader buggy or stadium truck. This truck is very well supported with assembly diagrams, detailed manuals. With the drawings you will know how to remove/replace every single nut, bolt and part on the vehicle. It will also provide all part numbers to buy spares. Duratrax dealers are all over the place in the US and Tower Hobbies online has everything too. You will need to buy one or two 7.2 volt battery packs and a charger as well. Check out the Duratrax Evader here: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSGU7**&P=ML Evader exploded diagram: http://manuals.hobbico.com/dtx/dtxd29-exploded.pdf Evader owners manual: http://manuals.hobbico.com/dtx/dtxd29-manual.pdf

RE: DO you like the new look of the DDM website
The site upgrade looks real nice. The slowdowns are most likely due to more use of Javascript to provide the pretty drop-down menus and that kind of stuff. Even if you don't use these elements it still takes time to load the pieces and build them up inside your browser before they are displayed. The company I develop software for took an older product that used simpler HTML and jazzed it up like DDM did and it has slowed down for users with older computers, lower amounts of main memory or older browsers. If you're experiencing slowdowns with Microsoft Internet Explorer, try Firefox 3.0 (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) or Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome). These two browsers run a lot faster than Internet Explorer - especially their Javascript engines. I wish DDM would do more to make the more Firehammer-friendly. Some tables to show Elcon and FG parts compatibility would be helpful.

RE: revo 3.3 faster than TQ clone
Not surprising at all that your Revo could outrun a stock TQ. The TQ is probably capable of maybe 35 mph stock. A stock Zenoah G260 with stock muffler is good for about 3 hp. I'm not sure what the rating is on the stock TQ engine but it's probably less than the Zenoah based other forum members' postings. The "fuelie" engine is a CY-brand 26cc clone of the Zenoah and makes good power for sure. With stock gearing on an FG Marder or Firehammer and one of these engines you will be closer to 40 mph. Adding a tuned pipe to a CY or Zenoah 26cc will take you up to 45 mph. Changing the gearing will boost your top speed some also. The real game-changer for speed comes with the FG 2-speed tranny. That tranny, tuned pipe and 26cc engine will get you in to the low 50s. Adding the FG 2-speed is not a trivial upgrade even on an FG. It involves a new gear plate and brake system. You'd be looking at $500+ for the parts.

RE: Searching for a huge RC electric car
I saw a New Bright 1:5 scale buggy at Target for $150 USD. It was set up like my Duratrax Firehammer but obviously no where near the quality/durability. It uses a single 7.2 volt NiCad battery pack so I'm sure considering the weight it would probably not go more than 10 - 12 miles per hour. Another concern I had given the buggy setup is how vulnerable the the suspension arms will be. If one of the open wheels catches a rock, stump, curb, etc. at speed it will probably snap a suspension arm. I don't know how easy it will be to get replacement parts but it could be a big pain. If the buggy is run in grass it could also put a big strain on the speed controller given the weight of the vehicle so it would be best to keep something like that a smooth or gravel surface.

RE: lipos in 1/5
I'm with Roger on this one, too. I run a 3000 mAH NiMH battery pack charged at 3.0 amps on a MRC SuperBrain charger. I get several tanks of runtime before needing to recharge. Are you using a rapid charger or a wall-wart trickle charger? What type of battery pack are you using now?

RE: fg baja or fg stadium
Your setup with the slicks looks badass! I got an FG 2-way LSD for my Firehammer and it was a huge difference. With the old stock diff I got the single wheel spin all the time. Now launches are much more predictable.

After staring at the exploded parts diagram and searching Tower it appears this grommet not sold at all. The Walbro in-tank fuel filter is also not available from Duratrax or Tower Hobbies. I tried to track down an XTM Grizzly exploded diagram to see if XTM sells the grommets but had no luck. You might try HobbyPeople.net to see if they have these grommets.

RE: how much is your LHS selling the baja5b rtr
At today's conversion rate that is $1188 USD. I would expect a LHS here in the states would probably ask $1000 USD. Do Aussie shop owners have to extra duties that would inflate the price? If not then that guy is definitely inflating the price.

RE: i hope i didnt get ripped off
Tear it down and clean it up. I bet you'll find that a lot of the wear you see will clean off nicely. At $760 you got a fantastic price. The upgraded engine, 813 carb, pipe, boost bottle and alloy parts alone would cost more than $500. The first time you fire it up and drive all qualms you have about what you paid will completely disappear [:D]

RE: BAJA 5T Press Release
I can somewhat see your point that this has a lot of the SS hopups (no pipe) and it's assembled. The 5b is $50 MORE ($969 USD) than the unassembled SS kit ($919 USD). The pipe is worth about $100. If the pipe were taken off the SS kit it would be probably $100 less than a 5b (not going to get all $100 off the price if HPI sold it that way). Take the pipe out and retool the SS kit into truck form with no other major upgrades (no 4WD, no front disc brakes, etc.) and add assembly to the cost. I still think the price point is kinda high. After the hype and inital orders ship it will be interesting to see if that price stays that high. I think this shows the huge value that the SS buggy kit has. If I had the budget for a second gasser I'd be all over that SS buggy kit! All that aside it is awesome to see that HPI has made another big commitment to 1:5 scale gassers. With all the third party support of the Baja platform this is a great product line.
