RE: water based acrylic lacquer
I needed a bit or red to touch up the cowl on my CAP. I went to Hoby Lobby (crafdt store) and bought some cheap arcrlic craft paint. A 4 oz bottle was 99 cents. I clear coated it with a house brand automotive urethane clear. No reaction between the two. I even brushed the urethane on as it was the ring behind the spinner. I plan to use the same on a complete project next time around. I've been flying the crap out of the plane all summer as it is my only flyable plane for the moment. The house brand urethane was reasonable price and it sprays very nice. ken

RE: Radios
My JR X-347 just died.. I replaced it and my four RX's with a Hitec A9 with a Opitma 9 (2) Optima 6's and a Minima 6 for less than a JR 9003 TX only. So far I'm happy with the ease of programing. Had one hiccup but that was my fault. I missed a step. Just new TX blues, so to speak. I'm much more comfortable with it now. Ken

RE: Classic Pattern Primer August 11, 2012
Well, the Primer went off without a hitch. We could have had a few more participants, but we always say that. The weather was absolutely perfect. The temp was in the mid 70's with light winds. The thermals passing through gave us more headaches than anything, especially when trying to string three loops together.[:D] We had six participants on Saturday. All had a good time and three of us made an agreement to practice and call for each other when we are out flying together. The individual maneuvers are not hard, it is harder to string them all together in a row and make them look good. I know "nerves" played a role on Saturday even though it was just "practice". Everybody had a good time. After it was over we did some fun flying and many were practicing the pattern. Here are a few photos of the event. If I get the order right, Denny with his twist did a good job. Another 3D plane getting ready. Blake flying and Bob calling. A very smooth Revolver. My favorite out of the bunch.... Well it is mine after all!! Lunch! Ya have to keep up your strength to fly the pattern. Kelly made us all look bad. We just about had to threaten him with bodily harm to get him to fly. VERY smooth making the rest of us very jealous. A little Cub with a 30 4C Saito flew the novice pattern. A little trouble with the stall turn but practice would help with that. Ken

RE: CPA / BPA Contest update
ORIGINAL: obergc Ken, Doctor tested the eye that was operated on and it's at 20/25 with the single vision lens.  My doctor advised me against getting the Re-Stor lens because he thought that it would be a compromise and not give me the best far vision as possible.  I don't mind using peepers for reading but I wanted the best far vision possible for flying R/C.  I was a little apprehensive about getting the surgery but like you say, except for the eye drops, the surgery is almost instant gratification.  My doctor told me that about 50% of the folks that have the Re-Stor lens love them and the other 50% hate them.  So far I'm estatic at the results, I hope the 2nd eye does as well.  Hopefully the days of my pattern ships disappearing several times during each flight will be long gone.
I wound up at 20/25 and 20/30. The worst part is I have a little astigmatism in the right eye that didn't get corrected. I also need "cheaters" and in fact have some regular glasses with the prescription needed to make both eyes 20/20. I normally don't fly with glasses, but feel it might be a good idea to wear them especially if trying to see a specific problem with the plane. Might help my acrobatics also. NOT![;)] I still need to connect my eyes to my thumbs.[:D] You're half done! Good luck on the other half! ken

RE: Elevator Trim Issues
My vote is for water soaked floats. You mentioned they were balsa covered in a heat shrink film. IMO, built up floats should be covered with glass and epoxy. While it is not a 100% guarantee of water tightness, I would trust the glass/epoxy way farther than iron on film. Ken

RE: Older H9 CAP 232
Well, I have about 20 or so flights on the CAP, maybe a few more. I had some engine issues, namely lean runs. Long story short I think it was the fuel tank shoved to close to the firewall, partially pinching the fuel line. You could hold the nose straight up and it would run fine. It would only lean out in the air. I'm very satisfied with the whole process of the rebuild. The plane is all 3/4 ounce glass cloth and epoxy with fabric on the movable tail parts. The color is Krylon rattle can, graphics by Cali and an automotive urethane clear over the top for fuel protection. All up weight with an empty fuel tank is 7 1/2 pounds. The Enya 90 4C, while not giving unlimited vertical performance, does a very fine job on a 14X6 prop. 200 foot diameter loops are easily obtained from level flight. Stalls are straight forward and if you hold it just right will bob two or three times before falling off on the right wing. Stall recovery is a bit delayed though but for 99% of flying will not bother. Landings are easy. I tend to fly the plane to the ground anyway so no worries there. I have done a few full stall landings and you get plenty of warning before the stall. Taxi and take off is a dream. You only need a bit of up elevator until you have enough speed to make the tail fly. The rudder is very effective, as it should be[:)], so keeping it on the center line is an easy task. I installed a spring steer tail wheel from Dubro. It's the "semi" scale unit. This is my first tail wheel of this type and I'm loving it. Oh, the rudder is pull / pull, another first for me. Another good decision made! I went to a fun fly a couple of weeks ago at a private full scale landing strip. It was 60 feet wide and we had to land from the south and take off to the south (both down wind). On one landing I had a dead stick, my fault for not getting the HS mix right and wound up in the TOP of the corn on a down wind landing. All I had to do was reach in and grab the landing gear. It was one row in! No damage at all[:D] I'm happy[:D][:D][:D] Ken

RE: Could this be the perfect clear coat?
ORIGINAL: jester_s1 I suppose an auto shop would do it, but I doubt it's cheap.
Just for fun and giggles check with a body shop. Ask them to clear coat your plane when they are doing another job. that way they will use "leftovers" in the gun. It doesn't take much do a medium size plane. Also ask to "go lite" on the paint and explain that weight is the enemy especially at the rear of the plane. If you have a shop you've been to for your car, they might be more friendly towards you. RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
ORIGINAL: Jeff Foley
ORIGINAL: dodgers72 There seems to be a lot of talk about the kavalier. I'm kinda leaning towards it, especially since I was born and raised in Virginia. A good UVA cavalier scheme would be a perfect!!
I can tell you an interesting story about the Kavalier.... I worked at Sig from 1976 to 1978 as a product engineer. Did a little of everything....dies, molds, plans, instruction books etc. When Claude McCullough (a real modeler's modeler) designed the Kavalier, he built a superb prototype with a nice paint job for photos and to get in some test flying. Claude and I were the only two at Sig who flew mode 2.....everyone else flew mode 1 because of the influence of reeds. Now...Claude could fly okay, but he wasn't always comfortable behind the sticks. Since I was young, stupid and fearless...he elected me to do his flying for him. We went out to Sig field on a bright sunny Iowa day with the big puffy clouds hanging around. This was Claudes favorite type of day to take photos. After what seemed like a long long period of Claude snapping away trying to get that perfect box top photo...we were ready to fly. I fueled it up, took off, and after about two clicks of right aileron trim and one of up elevator it was flying perfect. I tried a couple of rolls....perfect. Rolled inverted for a couple of laps....perfect. Ailerons and elevator felt balanced and even did a little slow flight with no problems. Then I tried a loop. It tracked well, wings perfectly level, up and over the top and down the backside....thats when it happened, a sudden pitch up that was very violent (and unexpected!) It only lasted a split second and then back to normal flight. I tried again...same result. At first I thought it was radio hit...but it did it twice more in the same spot. Puzzled...Claude said land it and we checked linkages, servo and every other thing we could think of...but all looked normal. After sitting there beside the model and studying it for a while...it dawned on me what was happening. When Claude was shooting pictures, he only put four #64 rubber bands on the wing because he thought they were ugly. And he didn't add any more! Every time I came down the backside of a loop, the front of the wing would raise up...stetching the rubber bands and then pop back down in place! After about eight more #64's were put on...all was normal. Jeff Foley Product Engineer Sig Mfg. (1976-1978)
Jeff, Does the Caviler and the Commander have the same roots? The Commander was my first plane with a "new" generation McCoy 40 in it. It was the plain bearing with the finned case. I remember our club used to take an annual trip to Sig every year with our local dealer. We would pick up fuel, kits, balsa wood and anything else we could get our grubby hands on. Almost forgot the factory tours. That was a lot of fun. It was amazing watching the gals pack kits in boxes. I never could get it all the kit back in the box it came out of!! Thanks Ken

RE: OS Max 91fx Shutting off above 3/4 throttle, HELP!
I had a similar problem with my Enya 90 4C. New fuel system in new plane. Turned out the fuel tank was jammed to tight to the firewall pinching the fuel line slightly. All you had to do was think start and it started and would idle all day long. You could hold the plane vertical (nose up) and it would run just fine. Nose down and it would richen just like it was supposed to. Pressure tested the fuel system and it held a couple PSI for 15 minutes. I removed part of a former o allow the tank to slide back a 1/4 inch and all is well. You are to lean. I was SO SURE of my new fuel system/tank installation, that was the last thing I checked. heck I even had the engine and carb in a total tear down a couple of times looking for the issue that did not exist in that part of the plane.
