Thunder Power TP610 charger and NiMH batteries
I purchased a Thunder Power TP610 last fall primarily to charge LiPo's for indoor flying. Now that spring has rolled around, I use it on NiHM batteries in my outdoor planes. But something seeems amiss. It seems to not fully charge this type of battery, at least when compared to my old Triton II charger. For instance, I attempted to charge a 4.8V 1500 mAh ignition battery with the TP610. I had it set on 1A, and it only charged for a few minutes and put in 15 mAh. Then I connected my old Triton, set at the same 1A, and it charged for roughly 30 minutes and put in approximately 330 mAh. I know the TP610 is set at 5mA delta (whatever that means), but don't know what the Triton is set at (most likely whatever the default is). So, is the new TP610 not fully charging my NiMH batteries, or is the old Triton overcharging them? Confused to say the least. Thanks for any help. Kerry
ORIGINAL: Planejaw Don't worry, it's only light ply. Not a big deal-breaker there. Drill a couple of 1/4'' holes under there, or take a sharp #11 blade and make a small rectangular hole to feed your servo wires through. I'm not near my plane right now, but can you drop the wires a little lower and go under the former and into the radio compartment area?
The former is completely solid. No holes above or below the hidden servo/receiver mounting tray. It would be difficult to put holes in there. Maybe I'll give it a try (I tend to be lazy though. [:D]) Horizon sent me some servo extensions, so I can route the wires up and over. Kerry

RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Well, I made it all the way to Step 8 in the assembly before I found a problem! The wires for the elevator and rudder servos are supposed to get fed through a former up to beneath the seat hatch area. Problem is, there's NO OPENINGS in the former! The photo in the manual shows oval holes, but mine is as solid as it gets! No way I can put holes in there without a lot of difficulty. I've sent a report to Horizon. We'll see what they say. The only thing I can think of is add extensions to the servos and run the wires up and over this former inside the cockpit area. Post 82 shows how it SHOULD look. Just my luck! Kerry

RE: Do you remember being a beginner???
I had wanted to try RC after having a control line plane that I could never get to start. (How many people did Cox ruin with their crummy engines that wouldn't run)? So, when I was interning during my second year of college, and made some money, I bought an early ARF. This was in 1984. The plane was a .25 size high wing that had foam core wings and a plastic fuse. There was I guy I worked with that said he new how to fly and would teach me. We went to one of the empty parking lot fields by the Charlotte Motor Speedway to try it out. He got it about 30 feet in the air and rolled it straight into the ground. He said that the controls were set up wrong. Of course it cracked the plastic fuse into multiple pieces. I put it aside, and it wasn't until 20 years later when an intern who started working here talked about RC that I got back into it. I have since come to realize that the transmitter was set up for Mode 1 and my 'instructor' was used to mode 2. Why he didn't checked that I'll never know. I'm sure there were clubs back then, but there was no such thing as the internet, so I wasn't aware of them. It was definitely a different time. Had I found a real instructor, I might not have lost out on 20 years of fun. P.S. I have to admit that I was terrified of that little engine. I thought I was going to cut my fingers off every time I had to adjust the needle valve. Kerry

I haven't gotten to fly much, but I've got a few flights on the Yak with a Perry-pumped OS 160. I'm no 3D'er, but it hovered at a little over half throttle with a Xoar 18x8 prop. If you don't feel like going to gas, I think this engine is a good alternative. Just bring lots of nitro to the field. [:D] Kerry

RE: Mig 3 kit, decent ARF, who has it?
I have a set of Harold Osborne plans that I purchased from Ken Kehlet. It is for a 71" ws plane that was drawn up in 1978. It calls for a 0.61 two stroke engine, but I'd guess you could easily upsize it given the wing span. I haven't done anything with the plans since I received them. Eventually I'll get around to it. My biggest hang up is having to make a canopy and cowl for it. Take a look at this post: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6481183/anchors_8505310/mpage_2/key_/anchor/tm.htm#8505310 You can try to contact Ken at the address given there. Kerry

I absolutely hate crashing!!! There, I said it!
The season has started off badly for me. Had a wing bolt come loose on a brand new Yak (first flight), and had radio problems that brought down an Extra (first flight of the year). It just gets me so worked up! [:@][:'(] We've hardly had any flying weather yet this year, and I'm already in the hole. The wing bolt was my fault, although it sure FELT tight. Radio problem has yet to be determined. It was my first flight on the plane with a 2.4GHz receiver in place. I THOUGHT these were fairly idiot proof, but found out the hard way that they're not. Didn't have any problems last year running the plane on FM. GRRRRRRRRR Just b.tch.ng!!! Kerry

RE: 12FG or 10C? - Help me decide!!
If you want familiarity go with the 10C, if you want a radio that could tide you over for a LONG time, get the 12FG. Couple things I dislike about the 12FG (recently stepped up from a 9CAPS): - having to push the button to transmit EVERY time you turn the transmitter on. - CAMPAC not usable - 9C frequency module incompatable (would be nice to only have to take one radio to the field) - receivers are expensive (8 channel & up to get the most out of the radio) - have to go into the 'Linkage' menu to select the aircraft you want to fly (why not the 'Model' menu??????) RE: yak , sukoi ,edge ..???
I think you'll find that there is a reason everyone flies the same planes. That being said, there's no reason that any plane can't be made to 3D. The first issue is power to weight ratio. Secondly, the control surfaces need to be large, and have lots of throw. Straight wings (no dihedral) are a must, plus a symmetric airfoil. Beyond that, it can pretty much look like anything. Personally I like Yaks and Sukhois - something about those radial engines I guess. But for something that's seen a bit less, I'd choose a Katana. Kerry

RE: 71" Peakmodel Yak 54
Forgot to mention this previously, my wing bolts were egg-shaped. This means that only part of the screw threads were engaging. I chose to replace them. Of course I expected them to be 1/4-20 size. But we all know what happens when we assume! I discovered that they are 6mm bolts. I had some steel ones that I can use temporarily. If anybody out there knows where to find plastic 6mm bolts, let me know. Thanks Kerry

Binding a 12FG to an R617
For some reason I can't bind this receiver. It's my first try at this, so maybe I'm doing something stupid. I switched the transmitter to 7 Channel mode. When I power up the receiver, the LED flashes green. When I push the easy link button, the LED flashes red (while I'm holding it), but then goes back to flashing green when I let go. I waited at least a minute and it was still flashing green. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks Kerry

RE: Newbie - Which Radio??
Definitely no one right answer to that question. As stated above, a 7 channel radio is a good starting point these days. They offer a lot of good programming options which is a key for the longevity of the radio. It has enough channels to cover a basic warbird without needing a Y harness*. Throttle, rudder, elevator, aileron, aileron, flaps and retractable landing gear = 7. As you start going to larger planes, you'll find that some use 2 elevator servos too (but most planes don't use flaps and retracts). The best thing you can do is decide which type of plane you most want to fly and let that be your guide. If you're sure that a WWII bomber is in your future, then a 7 channel radio probably isn't going to be enough. If you're not sure how long you'll be in the hobby, don't overspend on something you won't get your money's worth out of. Kerry *Some people swear they'll never use Y harnesses because of all the problems they've had - I never experienced any that I could trace to a Y harness.
