RE: Aeron 40
Of course - I am! <LOL> Paul did build one awhile back. He has pictures of his on this website. Beautiful job, I might add! Its a 'tear away' covering design with checker-board underneath - awesome work! Do you have any questions regarding the Aeron? I am sure that I can help, if you like. Happy Flying! Kevin [:D]

RE: Hard Bet Build
That is an interesting comment - Mikerjf. I am kinda surprised to hear that. The SE has a blunter leading edge (if I remember correctly), which should give it better slow flight characteristics. It does this with more drag or resistance on the leading edge. You may want to try the same manuvers with the SE at a slightly higher rate of speed. You may be hitting its stall in these manuvers because of the added resistance on the leading edge. Just a thought Kevin [:D]

RE: Hard Bet Build
I have not had any problems in using std. servos all the way around, though I have lost quite a few of the mini servos (HiTec 205, 225s stripping gears in flight) trying to use them on the ailerons. I have had others tell me that they run the mini servos all the time on the ailerons of my designs and do not have any problems with them. I guess that I am too rough on mine <LOL> [:)] I install the Dubro giant scale servo arms - which doesn't help with servo life either! [:D] BTW - all I run is the Webra 50 with a long (or extra long) Mac header and tune pipe on my Fun-Flys. I only offered short kits. I tried offering 'long' kits but had too many issues with the balsa stick suppliers. And I never liked the hardware that the kit suppliers offered. I would always just throw it out. I guess my standards were too high and too different. [:D] So.... I went to short kits only. The HB Mk3 was designed to fly fast as well as slow. I would guess that with the SSE wings, rule out the FAST part! [:)] The SSE wing design is thicker and blounter at the leading edge. Also, I presume that you got the instruction manual as well. If not - and this maybe too late, but you can download the instruction manual off of my website for FREE! Let me know how it flies Kevin

RE: Hard Bet Build
I appreciate the compliment of how easy the fuse framed up. I can't tell you how many hours I spent in the design to ensure that it came out light, strong, rigid, and ease of building. I will be currious to hear how it flies with the Something Extra wings. Did you modify the old wings to take the wing tube that came with your HB Mk3 kit? Or - Use the SIG wing tube? I didn't think that they were the same size - though I could be wrong! [:D] If the wing tubes are the same size, it would be nice if you built the HB Mk3 wings as well, and compared the 2 different wing sets - I already noticed, you don't want to have to build the wings unless you have to! [:)] Well - enjoy your modified HB Mk3, and please don't hesitate to ask me any questions that you may have regarding the kit or its flight characteristics. Happy Flying! Kevin [:D]

RE: suggest a pla
I agree with Tailtwister. There is quite a few A/C mentioned above that, - I would not consider a "good 2nd plane". Jumping into a 3D plane as a second A/C is typically, not the right decision / choice. I would also suggest the 4-Star 40/60, or Goldberg Tiger. I have used a SIG Fazer as a trainer in the past for very talented kids that are in their latter stages of training, but ordinarily would not be considered a "good 2nd plane" let alone a trainer. An Up-Roar, Dazzler, or Fazer could make a good 2nd plane if your headed for 3D and are ready for something like that. Like TailTwister mentioned, there is no way for us to determine your abilities thru this forum. You have to be the judge. Let's face it, its your pocketbook! [:D] Not having flown with you, I'd stick with the 4-Star 40/60, or Goldberg Tiger. They are forgiving, and GREAT entry level acrobatics. Like Tailtwister said, I definitely would not go into an Extreme Flight Edge 540. Its a great A/C, just not a "good 2nd plane". I fly one of these currently, and love it! Good Luck & Happy Flying! HSRCM.COM going away
Guys, - I'm going to shut-down my website, http://www.hsrcm.com. I haven't had the time to do any updates in about a year now, thence I am going to shut it down. RE: Macs or Tower muffler for 3d?
I've gone with the Ultrathrust, and I've seen the difference with the Mac 1-pc replacement muffler (not impressed, though does same some weight). I fly the Webra 50 on all of my Fun Flys with a Mac long or extra long header and tuned pipe. I tune the header so that it is about 1/4 - 1/2" longer than when tuned for maximum RPM. The little extra length adds some extra back pressure on the head of the motor and drives the power band of the motor to the lower RPMs, where we want them for a Fun Fly. I, personally, have gotten allot better performance out of this set-up for my Fun Flys as opposed to the moose can set-up, and over the Ultrathrust muffer. Remember that the mini tuned pipes like the Ultrathrust and Jett mufflers are designed for maximum RPMs. They are designed for racing Q500s, Q-40s, etc. The 2-pc design of Mac's seperate header and tuned pipe is a more expensive route over some of the other choices out there, but IMHO - its worth it! If you decide to go this route, do not make the mistake of purchasing the pre-tuned set-up from Mac. This set-up is designed for max. RPM, and you don't know if your engine will run the same in your geographical area (won't), and what prop was used to come up with this set-up. Spend the time and do it right the first time. Tuning instructions are available on MAC's website. Hope that this helps! Kevin [:D]

RE: Heres my puzzle, now to glue it all together
Personally - I like the hatches on top of the wing. It is not as pretty - some say, but since the exhaust typically covers the bottom of the wing on a profile, there is less chance of getting fuel residue inside the wing with the hatches on top. If you haven't stripped the wing, I'd go with it! Good Luck - Sam! Kevin [:D]

RE: Which is better for 3D
Jeff is absolutely right. If you want full 3D capability, then go with a profile. All that you mentioned with do some 3D, though not the full array of 3D manuvers. See if you can fins someone that is already flying a profile in your area. Watch its capability, and fly it, if they will let you. You'll be SOLD on profiles in a heartbeat! Kevin [:D]

RE: Hangar 9 TWIST motor?
You'll probably want something more than 46 LA. Even if the 46 LA will hover it, it probably won't pull out of a hover with authority, and based on your question, I would guess that you are wanting to learn to hover. If this is the case, you definitely want something that will pull you out of a hover with authority, otherwise you will be liable to have to due allot of rebuilding and repairing! [:)] Some 46 LA I've seen are very strong for a bushed motor, though those are typically not the normal 46 LA. I would have thought that the TT 46 would do just fine with the right prop. I would highly recommend a BB motor, like the TT. If you already have the 46 LA, and are on a limited budget, then put a 11X4 or 11X5 wood prop on it and go. Just make sure that you hover high enough that if you get in trouble, you got enough room to fly out of your situation. Realize that there are so many factors that effect the performance of these glow engines, altitude that you are flying at, barametric pressure, temperature, humidity, etc., then every engine is not the same, even from the same manufacturer & same size. Then you have to factor in the resistenance of the aircraft design, weight, etc. And typically, all ARFs vary so much in wieght from the factor. I think that some of them still have a little chinese kid in them, since they are so heavy! [:D] Inb other words, it is a guess for us, at best, to say this engine or another is the best for you. People can only express an opinion based on what they have been exposed to. Personally, I run nothing but Webra 50's with a Mac long or extra long header and a Mac long tune pipe. This is what works for me in my area. I am not a 4C kinda guy. So here is my 2 cents (and probably then some [:)]) Hope that it helps in some way. Kevin [:D]

RE: webra 50 prop
Sorry Balin - but I have never run a MCM on any of my Webras. I have always ran the Mac long or extra long headers with the standard long pipe. In fact, I don't even break my engines in any more with the stk mufflers. I go straight to the header and pipe. It has been soooo long that I ran a stk muffler on one of my Webra 50s that I have nothing to base my answer on. Sorry - I can't help you with your question. Good luck! Kevin [:D]

RE: want a profile plane, what do you like?
As Jeff has said above, it is hard to beat a SPAD for durability - but they fly like crap! [:)] You have to make some sacrifices for that durability <LOL> You can learn some 3D with a SPAD i.e. harrier, elevator, flat spins, waterfalls - but I would not recomend it (IMO). A SPAD flies entirely different from the others mention in Jeff's thread. Remember, with a SPAD, the wing is not typically a full foil, so the angle in which you fly it forms a foil with the air flow. In the recent AMA magazine, they review the Extreme Flight profile Edge 540, and claim that it is a good one for learning 3D. I have one and love it (despite what my avitar depicts - <LOL> (have to change that thing! [:D]) The Knife and Burrito as excellent choices as well. You can't go wrong this any of them mentioned so far in this thread. Kevin [:D]

RE: webra 50 prop
Considering the number of Webra 50s that I have, and also consider that I have sold every OS that I had, that should tell you everything that you need to know! [:D] <LOL> Honestly, the Webra 50 is awesome, though picky in its set-up, and sometimes sensitive. If you are a prefectionist, always looking for that extra 200 rpm, then Webra is a good choice. If you want an engine that you set the needles once and you never want to touch them again, regardless of slight variations in performance, then a Webra 50 is not for you! Personally, I haven't been impressed with OS (airplane engines) since they dropped the old SF series. Webra is on the expensive side in comparison to some other brands available, but obviously I think that it is worth it! [:D] The Webra 50s are light, and out perform anything that I have found out there (at least for me). I have bought numerous other manufacturer's engines, and I always go back to the Webra 50 for my Fun-Flys. Also realize that I am not a big fan of 4-strokes either, though seem extremely promising in allot of people's eyes. I just have not had any luck with 4Cs. I have not been impressed with the Webra 32. I have about 3 Webra 32s, and I prefer the TT36 despite they are heavier. Realize that this is only MHO, but you asked for it! [:D] <LOL> Take Care & Happy Flying! Kevin [:D]

RE: webra 50 prop
I run anywheres from 4 to 6 Webra 50s with Mac headers and long tuned pipes on my Fun-Flys (must own at leaswt 8 - 10 Webra 50s now). I have migrated to a modified version of a Zinger 12X4 woodie. I round the tips and thin the blades on them very much like what the APC looks like. The advantage to the wood is that it is so - so much lighter that the throttle response is instantaneous. IMO - the APC is way too heavy, thereby it takes too long to spool up and too long to slow down. Once you find a woodie that works for you, you'll never want to go back to that heavy sh!t <LOL> Try it! - You'll Love It! <LOL> Kevin [:D]

RE: EF 540T questions
I am using the CF LG on my Edge without any problem at all! I can't understand the problems outlined here regarding CF breaking, or delaminating, or ??? (I am not sure) That tells me that the there was something wrong with the resin / hardener, or they were not vacuum bagged properly. I've used the Tetherite gear on other aircraft and liked them. I used the CF on this one because they were in the shop when I needed something! [:D] I've beat the crap out of my CF gear on this A/C without any problem at all. I've used allot of CF gear without problems. BTW - watch what modifications that you make in the tail section of this A/C and select your tail servos (weight) carefully. I changed the tail wheel assy. to a DB haige style, and went with heavy servos and a really light engine (Webra 50) with a full length header and tune pipe. This combination and set-up created allot of problems for me to get the CG to the 1" behind the spar that I wanted. I ended up adding a brass spinner nut to the nose to get the CG close, which I don't like adding a brass spinner to anything![:o] I've also - since - changed the tail servos to lighter servos (digitals), but still haven't been able to get rid of the brass spinner nut. [:(] And BTW - Yeah - Yeah! I still haven't changed my avitar, this A/C has changed my opinion regarding this particular ARF - anyways! <LOL> Kevin [:D]

RE: EF 540t Profile
I've had allot of problems with the HS 225's. I've quit using them - even for a throttle servo ( BTW - that is all that I will use them for on a Fun-Fly). I've got about 8 - 10 that I need to send back to HiTec. Both my son and I use to use them. I have moved to a comparible Futaba servo (can't remember the No.) where a mini servo is important, otherwise, I've switched to a std servo, or whatever is laying around in the shop [:D] I can't understand how you guys are getting away with the HS 80 series for a throttle servo, obviously, I am a heck of allot tougher on my throttle servo than you! <LOL> Kevin [:D]

RE: EF 540t Profile
One thing that I did was I cut and installed short sections of large fuel tubing on the wire ties that hold the fuel tank in place in addition to the foam between the tank and fuse. I just slide the fuel tubing over the wire tie before I install it. The fuel tubing adds allot of extra dampening effect and helps prevent the fuel tank / wire ties from sliding. Works GREAT! RE: EF 540t Profile
Excellent flying profile! I talked with Chris personally when I bought mine. He said that he was flying his with the CG at about 1 in. behind the spar. I've got mine at about the same. I am running high torque (over stds) digital servos in the tail and MPI 870's on the ailerons. I have a Webra 50 with a X-Long header and std. tuned pipe by Mac Products on mine mounted at the end of the engine mounting rails. I still had to add a brass spinner nut to get the CG close, though I installed a different tail wheel assy over what was supplied with the kit (and I am sorry that I did). Mine is around 4.5 lbs with this set-up (even with the brass spinner nut). I love it! Kevin [:D] BTW - I have to change my Avitar after this ARF! [:D]

RE: ST45 on spa3dt, CG540 Edge, Morris Knife?
I've had excellent luck with the ST45 - Normally - plenty of power! There are several things that probably needs to be checked if it was in the closet for a long periof of time. I would clean the carb. Take is all apart and clean it out. Ensure that the needles are not damged nor their seats. Back-Flush the carb, and pressure test the integrity of the seals after you assemble the carb to ensure that it does not leak. Also, pressure test the casing to ensure that the head is not leaking nor the backplate seal. If this does not fix the issue - PM me and I'll meet you at my airfield, since we are close, and I'll see what I can do for you. Let me know how you make out. Good Luck - Kevin

RE: climbing flat spin
Jeff and SmallFly (Tom) are exactly right. If you look at the movies I have posted on my website of climbing flat spins, you'll see that the aircraft can not be perfectly flat to accomplish a climbing flat spin. Every aircraft wants and needs something different to get it into that perfectly flat - flat spin. I find that if you over cross the ailerons from the flat position, the aircraft will be more apt to climb. Coming out of the rudder will typically allow the tail to drop and perform a Tornado. Once again, you'll find a 'sweet' spot where the aircraft will maintain altitude and even climb, provided that there is enough power on the aircraft. The Sledge is perfectly capable of any of these manuvers. It just takes practice and patience, not necessarily a different aircraft. Burn that glow fuel! [:)] Kevin [:D]

RE: Build gurus HELP!!!
I realize that this response may be late, but Paul is absolutely right - do not sheet with ply except at the nose with lite ply. I recommend that you sheet the fuse with 1/16" balsa at a 45 deg. angle relative to the bottom of the fuse, then sheet the opposite side of the fuse 90 degrees to that. This really stiffens up the fuse without having to add the CF strips and will take out that potential torsional twist. I've also taken a gun drill and drilled the fuse and added a CF rod down thru the fuse and into the trailing edge of the wing to stiffen a fuse up. Hope that this helps - Sorry - potentially too late! Kevin :D
