RE: HANGER 9 EDGE 540 ....BLAST FROM THE PAST
Does anyone remember what C.G. works for good 3d on this plane, yet still be stable. I have been running a DLE 30 on mine for the last few years. Power is good , but it flies a little heavy.

RE: NEW DLE30!
Vert. Grimace. I have a DLE 30 that was doing the same thing. Chased needle everywhere, could not tune. Start out ok ran worse as it warmed. Finally quit while tuning on the ground. NO SPARK. After ignition cooled, spark came back.Sent ignition back to tower, they replaced it. Now it will idle all day at 1600 and runs much better. Still doesnt turn as high RPM as other 2 dle 30s but at least it runs and doesnt die.

RE: NEW DLE30!
hey Jody a quick question. I have 3 dle 30s all great engines, couldnt ask for better. One of the 30s are in a edge 540 that weighs right at 13lb. For all maneuvers, except for hover it is great, just needs a little more power for good pull out. I have read the Frank Bowman ring may gain as much as 200 RPMs. And that is a pretty cheap improvement. Are there any tuned canisters, or any other mufflers (that are any good, and dont weight 8oz) that will gain any descent RPMs. Right now I have the stock muffler. I am using a xoar 19x8 beechwood prop. I have tried a Zinger pro 20x6, didnt care for the speed nor the prop rip, and a 19x8 CF Mejzlik( which was the best, but heavy). I have seen 19x7 xoars, but no one seems to have any. A 400 rpm gain with the xoar 19x8 would probably be enough. Just not sure how to get it. Thanks

RE: NEW DLE30!
Let me throw in my $.02 on the DLE 30. I have a Hangar 9 Edge 540 78" and a Lanier stinger 120 both with DLE 30s. Each weigh a touch over 13LB. The 30s with a Xoar 19x8 have impressive unlimited vertical. The edge will do decent 3d the stinger wont but it wasn't made to 3d. As many have stated 13LBS. is the upper limit for 3D on a DLE 30, but they will sport fly 15 LBS very well I am sure.

I have been running Zinger pro 20x6 on 13lb planes. They have ok pullout. A xoar 20x6 would be better I am sure. A 12lb plane should be very good with a quality 20x6. I also like the 20x6 props for easy landing with 2000 rpm idle speeds.

T.O.M. how about a quick bit of advise. A few posts back you wrote about metal throttle rods being a no-no. I have 5 gassers running with the following set up; standard servo with plastic arm, 2-56 push rod going to a plastic ball link at throttle arm at carb. I am running Spektrum 2.4g recs. seperate batteries. I have not had any trouble in 3 years, but in your opinion am I setting on a time bomb. If so what should I be using? I spoke with the Horizon techs and they said it will be fine. But if you have seen otherwise please share. Thanks for your advise.

I asked the HH tech that very question. I said the DLE 30 doesnt shake near as much as a big Saito. His repsonce was the gas engines have a different kind of vibration that WILL break the hard plastic servos.

RE: New Funtana 125
I have 16 DS821 in service on various 60 size GLOW powered planes and smaller. 2 of the 3D planes have at least 100 flights each running 5 cell NiCd for power. The DS821 servos still are working as new. I did break the output shaft on 1 while setting up a pull pull rudder (my fault), but I wont used the on a pull pull after that. Now I spoke Horizon about a year ago about using 2 Matchboxes with (4) DS821s on a 80+ inch GAS plane with long barn door style ailerons. They said,"They would not use any DS821 on ANY GAS power plane due to the vibration breaking the output shaft and / or gears." In that techs opinion he would use 1st choice metal gears and second choice nylon, never karbonite. Now a year later I needed the MG servos from that 80" plane for something else. I took a chance and installed 4 DS821 on the ailerons and have about 15 flights on them no problems. BUT this is on a 13+ lb plane with a DLE 30, with 4 servos on (2) 36" wide x 2 inch deep barn door ailerons. That plane is so heavy it really doesn't vibrate much and the control surfaces are not 3D sized. My personal opinion, I would not use them on anything 3D plane larger than a 60 sized glow that I wanted to keep. The one output shaft that I broke didn't take that much side loading to snap it off. Just my 2 cents.[:D]

DLE-30 is almost a pound lighter and puts out a fair bit more power than a Zenoah 26. The DLE30s are good engines but so are the Zenoahs I have 3 dle-30s and all are good engines with lots of power. Just exercise throttle control and you will be fine.

RE: NEW DLE30!
Ditto on the run dry. Asked the same question of T.O.M. . His response was no reason to run dry. Just pump the fuel out of the tank. As many have stated put a tee as close to the carb as you can to fill and empty the tank. That way you dont have to draw fuel all the way from the tank each first start of the day.

RE: NEW DLE30!
I put a rear carb dle 30 in a lanier stinger 120 arf and flew it today for the first time. Wow. I have 2 other side carbs that run very good , no complaints, but the rear carb does run better and is easier to tune. I ran one tank one the ground for initial tune, then took to the air. To my surprise the rear carb didnt tune the same as the side. the old lean to max rpm then richen 20 rpm at WOT worked, but the lean all you can till it just takes throttle at warm idle didnt. That tune resulted in a lean run at 1/4 throttle to the point it died. I richened the idle 1/16 turn and problem is gone. I wander if some of the dead stick posts about the rear carb engines, are from the above tuning procedure used successfully on most side carb dle30s?

RE: NEW DLE30!
I broke mine engine in on a 20x6 and continue to fly on that prop. The 6 pitch will slow your landing speed a bit. Read some of the earlier tuning posts, but in short, lean your low speed needle until it wont take a quick throttle, until after the engine is warm. I left my idle rpm at 2000 rpm, and my engine has never died. If you need a slower idle, on landing approach trim down a click or 2. One last thing that I always add. I run Pennzoil air cooled oil at 32:1 and a NGK cm6 plug. From my own experience, if your still having trouble, try a different brand of gas. I personally run CITCO premium it seems to run the best and doesn't have any alcohol. Just my 2 cents.

My edge weighs 12lb 13oz, it will pullout of a hover with a 20x6 Zinger pro ok, it doesnt like a vertical snap at least when its 90 deg. f outside. I think you will be OK for most 3D at 12lb or less.

RE: NEW DLE30!
The side carb will fit in your cowl just fine, will have killer power, just keep the speed down. The all up weight wont be much more than the 150 (maybe an oz or 2) since you will only need a 12 oz gas tank. I think my dle vibrates at an idle a little more than the crrc, but not any more than a saito 150.

RE: NEW DLE30!
Whether you choose a CRRC 26i a DLE 30 or a Saito 125 or any other over powed engine, you will have to practice throttle management or you WILL get flutter and pick up a pile of pieces. Those planes were meant to use a low pitch prop like a 16x4w witch made it fly slowly. I have many flights on mine with a 17x6 APC, I just make sure the throttle is used wisely.

RE: NEW DLE30!
The side carb engine can be bought on ebay from USA sellers, but good luck with any warranty issues. I have a CRRC 26i in a Funtana 90s works well, maybe a little heavy. The Dle 30 is a little lighter in weight with LOTS more power. You may have ground clearance problems with the DLE as a 18x8 is about a min. prop. I am running a 17x6 on my CRRC with not much ground clearance. If you wanted to put the Funtana 90 on a diet, CF landing gear, wing tube, LiFe batts. and lighten any thing you can think of, it would be an absolute vertical rocket, and an average 3d plane. ( The DLE 30 will have killer power to spare either way.) Mine is a good all around flier with unlimited vertical, but is too heavy for the airframe to be a great 3d machine.

RE: NEW DLE30!
I agree 2 clicks up on the idle to take off and normal fly. 2 down on final approach. Use a 6 pitch prop, make sure the idle adj. is as lean as possible.( wont take throttle when cold, but will after the engine is warm.) After several gal. of fuel use a 19x8 prop and it will idle fine at 1700. One last thing to try, as I have stated before not all gas runs the same (at least here in the mid west), try a different brand. I have had the best luck with Citco premium and penzoil air cooled at 32:1. This is just my personal experience, doesn't mean it will work for you. The high octane does nothing for you, but something in the formulation does help the idle reliability a lot.( maybe easier to vaporize, dont know, I only know it worked for me.)

T.O.M. a question. At the end of a fling day should I run my gas engine dry or leave fuel in the lines and carb? Some folks have told me leaving fuel in the carb is good, keeps the diaphragm from drying out, and also make for an easier start next time. What do you say?
