RE: TF FW190 GIANT ARF
Well, for what its worth. I will most likely get the TF FW190 as my next project to compliment Angels Playmate. I will pull the monocote off and glass and paint. Maybe 1/2 pound heavier. But that will not affect flight performance very much at all with the DLE55. I just want my own paint job. I don't want to be one of ten exact copies at a fly in. Adding detail and rivets does so much for a model. It gives personality. Karl

Buff, I have built the kit with the Spychella cowl. Once you build the kit with the Spychella cowl you will see the right thrust in the cowl. I built the kit with no adjustment to the tail. I built it to the plans except I modified the dorsal fin to make it more scale. It flies great. Karl

What version did you get? ARF or Kit? There are alot of differences between the two. The canopies is just one of the things different. They are different lengths. Karl

Hey Tony, Lets all gang up on Dave Brown or Tru Turn to get them to make a true P-51 spinner in various sizes. I think if enough people call them and request them to make them, they may do it. How long ago did you contact them? I'll call next week. What do you say guys? Who's with me? Karl

Tony, So his large one, is the 69 inch version? Correct? I know Platts is 80 inch. I'd like to get to 89 inch (ish). Build it around available spinners, canopies and such. Not much of a priority right now though. I have my next two projects in the works. Blown up Platt 109 and a P-40B. Karl, P.S Tony, I'm repainting Angels Playmate to improve the detail and finish. I was also able to loose some weight. I changed some things around inside the plane to allow me to loose some nose weight. She weighed about 23 1/2 lbs and she will get down to about 23. As you recall I have your exhaust for the top flight P-51. I'll send updated photos when shes done.

RE: who makes the best scale P-51
Hi Wally, Is your friend German? I was born in Munich. Anyways to answer your question. I use the Revo 50. It has proven to be the perfect engine for this plane. It is rear carb and rear exhaust. It has a long crankshaft which allows the engine to sit further back in the nose of the plane. I have attached some links that will help. This engine starts easy and has run great. http://www.rc-revolution.com/engine_r50u.htm This link is to their website http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4555292/mpage_59/key_/tm.htm Here is a link to some posts that I put on another thread. This should help. Start at post 1454. Post 1458 shows pictures of the installation of the engine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z2hgiar9sA This is a video on youtube that was taken this year in Muncie Indiana. My P-51 starts at the 3:09 min mark. This was also my first time landing on blacktop with the P-51. As you will see. LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpUwgxb7dcs Part 2 of the above video. More fun landings. It was high humidity that day with 98degrees. Air was very thin and when you got over the black top the hot air coming off of it would make planes balloon. It was very interesting to say the least. But the engine ran great. Karl

RE: funny or amazing crash stories
I usually tell non modelers that when you crash, you rarely loose the entire plane. Well here is a case where my friend never even attempted to pick up the pieces. Back in the late 80's I lived in Myrtle Beach, SC. Our local field was very nice, well groomed, but had a power lines at one end of the field and a sewage treatment plant on the other. The plant was seperated from the field by a mound that was about 25 to 30 feet high. One day my friend brought out his 40 size pattern plane powered by an O.S .61 long stroke with a tuned pipe. Needless to say it was fast. He was doing the fastest low passes down the field, I had ever seen. Each low pass was followed by a huge split S at each end of the field. On one pass I mentioned to him that I thought that I heard flutter. He responded, that he didn't have flutter. On the next pass he did his split S, followed by a dive straight into the sewage treatment pond, at well over 100mph. The splash of SH#t could be seen well over the 30 foot high mound. He had lost his elevator. he could have retrived his plane. The plant had a small boat. But he decided against it. I laugh every time I think about that.

RE: who makes the best scale P-51
Hi Everyone, Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I have the Top Flight P-51 Kit, not the Arf. The outlines of the kit and arf are very similar. I decided on the kit because I wanted to change a few things. Plus I like to build. However, that being said, You can take the arf make a few changes and achieve the desired result. I have been a modeler for 35 years and have seen alot of different Mustangs over the years. They all have scale issues. You could drive yourself nuts trying to be perfect. Ziroli, Dave Platt, Brian Taylor, Byron, Aeroworks, Aerotech, Top Flite, etc all have issues. All but the Dave Platt use a non scale airfoil. So like I said, they all have issues. What needs to be decided is how far and how much time and money do you want to invest. Also, are you a builder, a pilot or both. I personally fly my planes alot. No hanger queens here. That is why I chose the Top Flite. I was able to get a good flying, sport scale model. Here are some of the changes I made to get MY desired result. I used the Leo Spychalla Cowl and Tony Howard exhaust. this is huge for the overall nose of the model. Thank you Leo, hope to see you in Fond Du Lac in 2012. I spent alot of time on the wing fillets and dorsal fin. Notice how clean and crisp the fin is. It is not just a piece of balsa with a rounded front glued to the vertical stab. It blends in very well. Modified the belly scoop and added the oil cooler doors from fiberglass. Made fiberglass landing gear doors. Notice how little of the engine is visible. Added ducting to help cool the engine. This is glassed and painted. Engine is a Revo 52, (runs very well) These are just a few. As far as the Aero-works arf, I have seen it and its not too bad. I do understand that it is pretty complete, but for the money I would expect more. The tail is way off the dorsal fin is an issue. The landing gear stance, I don't like cowls that bolt on the front like this. It takes away from the shape of the nose. But these could be fixed. But again for the money....... Probably one of the nicest is the CARF. but it also has some issues. The Canopy is too big. And it is expensive. I can build 2 top flites for one CARF. Also wood is easier to fix than composite. Here are some pictures of my Top Flite. Karl

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build
Hi Kirt, I used a 1/4 inch thick maple rib doubler. I made a rib that looked like W-4Z and W-5Z. I think those are the part numbers. They are the rib doublers that face each other for rib W-4 and W-5. This will give you more wood to screw into, to mount the landing gear. Most people that I know use an air cylinder to operate the canopy. I believe the one for the P-51 is 4 inches long. I don't know who sells them. But I have seen them. Karl

Hi Sam, Was Muncie hot or what this year? You are correct. I use a number of different methods to duplicate rivets and panel lines. I also use the soldering iron. I make my Dasus fasteners that way. Make the circle and then take an xacto blade to make the slot. Karl

Kirtsm, Don't really need to reinforce the plane too much. I have had no issues at all with the overall structure of the kit. Only the landing gear mounts are terrible on the kit. I completely changed that. Keep the tail light. Karl

RE: ZIROLI SBD DAUNTLESS BUILD
Hi Kirby, There are a few ways to look at this. First the rivets are put on and stick just fine, as you can see in the picture above. Also note that after the rivets are dry, I wet sand them lightly to take down alittle and make them flatter. Practice to get the result that you want. If you mess up. just reapply and move on. The second way to look at this, is because you use elmers glue, you can be remove them with soap and water after they are dry. This is very handy for a flush rivet. See attached picture of the BF109. Prep the wing. Add the panel lines and rivets. Spray three coats of automotive primer. I use either Dupont fill and sand, or a product from Evercoat. These dry and are ready to sand in less than 30 minutes. Also very easy to wet sand. Once the primer is dry, sand the primer down to the top of the panel line tape is visible and the top of the rivets show the glue. Pull up the tape and using a wash cloth or sponge wash the rivets off. You will be left with recessed panel lines and nice looking flush rivets. After either way, just paint and weather as normal. Notice in the one picture of the P-51, the "dirt" streaks over the rivets. Karl, There are only two types of airplanes, Fighters and Targets".

RE: ZIROLI SBD DAUNTLESS BUILD
Hi Nicola, I recommend using a little oil bottle for any curved areas. But I use a comb on almost all straight areas. The comb works very well because you can put on alot of rivets at one time. Finding the right comb may take a minute. Ive bought about 10 to find the one that works the best. I use a bead of Elmers interior wood glue and dip the comb into the glue then apply it to the area on the plane. I completed my entire wing on my P-51 in one day. Hope this helps, Karl

kirtsm, Just one thing to keep in mind. Be conscious of weight. Under 24 lbs good over 24 lbs not so good. I have found, that the plane will fly at over 24 lbs but under 24 lbs should be your target. So be careful with accessories. Karl

RE: top flite p-51 giant scale build
Hi Doug, I have a number of posts on this thread. I address the ducting in post 1458. I recommend starting at post 1454 though. Hope it helps. I really like my Revo engine. Oh man, I just realized that you were the one I responded to in the original thread. All I can say is, trust me on this. Forget the shroud and fan. Use the ducting. I have flown the plane this year at Muncie for the Indiana Warbird Campaign event. This was the hottest day I have ever been to an event. It was crazy hot. 98 degrees and very high humidity. I know 98 degrees may not seem that bad since you are from Texas, but the humidity kills us here. And there was very little wind. I flew about five or six times on Satureday. And the engine ran fine. You could tell the air was thin because the power was down. And it was so hot the black top runway even gave us fits because the air rising off of it. You can see in the attached video from Youtube that when you can in to land, that when the plane would get to the black top, it would literally balloon a bit. It sure gave me fits. Also this was my first time taking off and landing on blacktop with the P-51. Definately more work than grass. I struggled a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z2hgiar9sA I start at the 3:09 minute mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpUwgxb7dcs&feature=related Hope you like Karl
