They may be on par with a two stroke 1.20 in terms of power. We are running the DLE 20cc engines on Giant Big Stik planes used as trainers, swinging 17x6 props at well over 8300 RPM

The DLE20 - IMO, is a very compact little powerhouse that produces more power than most 1.20 size 4 stroke nitro's out there (if not all), and at it's cost point, is a very hard option to pass by. Then there are the running costs - or lack of them when compared to nitro.

That is fantastic service .... and it's good that your getting beyond the normal 3-4 people who get told of about positive stories like this (normally as humans we tell 3-4 times as many people when it does not go our way). They need to open a 'branch' way down here I think!! (LOL)

RE: Are Pattern Planes Good 2nd Planes?
ORIGINAL: Dirt_hawg The bigger the better for a first second or third plane..My Extreme flight Yak 54 50cc plane is the easiest plane ive ever flown..And it will do it all!..But it will set you back 2500$ or better...
Plus one to that, while I only have a 56" wide Yak54 (brought as my 2nd plane I might add - again), once set up correctly, with limited throw's and the correct expo, it's an utter breeze to fly, and I can only imagine just now nice a well set up 50cc version is (there is a hint of the green eyed monster there as i type this).
ORIGINAL: Deandome Hmmmmm....I always grouped the Pulse with the Sbachs, Yaks & the other std. acrobats, but [link=http://masportaviator.com/2009/07/02/pulse-xt-40-arf/]clearly I've been wrong[/link]! And they make bigger versions too, which I like! Thanks...that's definitely high on the list now, particularly as it comes in 60 and 120 sizes. Odd, though, that the 60 version is $260 and the 125 version is only $40 more. It's almost like they're FORCING me to go with the bigger one [:)
I have a Yak54 as a 2nd plane, the key is reducing the throws to next to nothing (mine are at only 30% of maximum) and using expo with some thought. Being as they have a really low weight per sq inch, they really do tame down nicely and turn into a kitty kat to fly that you just point and fly - they/it tracks fantastically. The beauty is that I can increase the responsiveness as I grow with that plane, as currently she cruses at only 45% throttle, so I have everything in reserve should/when I feel I need it down the line.

I'm building a Hangar 9 Blue Nose P51 ARF and have the DLE20 mounted. Apparently that 65" size stang is SWEEEEEEEEET with that motor in it!

RE: Deals on Transmitter/Receiver
ORIGINAL: Gray Beard ........ Buying high end items before you have any idea of what you are doing or plan to do is foolish.
While the links I list above are for an 8ch Futuba 2.4g radio, if someone is looking at a Dx6i already as in this case, I would still recommend that if looking to spend money on the Dx6, that little bit extra they need to get an 8ch radio will save them money overall being as they sound like they are already placing some thought into a future in the hobby. I only brought my Dx6i after I knew I had a future with the hobby, but was stupid enough to think I was saving money - shortcuts NEVER save people and/or me money in life. If only I listened to the guy I knew who was telling me to get a radio with more than 6 channels!.
ORIGINAL: Gray Beard ............. Too many people are like you and wish they would have bought a better radio right away. I went from a 7 to a 9 myself in about two years.
I'm one of them, thus my original addition of that 8ch system on my post. Spend that little extra now, and you'll be grateful down the line. I started on a 6ch RTF 450 Heli, then went nitro, got the Dx6i as it was 'cheap', and now I need an updated 8-9+ system for things like the 65", 20cc gas powered 9 servo P51 mustang I'm building - Ie, I'm spending even MORE money on buying new systems than I need to have had I just got 8ch in the beginning, as 'Y-leads' are not all they are cracked up to be! Do it once, do it right (and the Futuba FHSS receivers for that 8ch system are about half the price of the Futuba FAST and/or DSMX Spektrum ones!)

RE: What do you use to clean your monokote?
Window cleaner and a good old (washed) cloth nappy (diaper) does a great job of getting rid of nitro goo on my planes and heli.

Not quite: [link]http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LWE121&P=0[/link] PS - they have an 8channel version of that in their lineup that I'm considering upgrading my Dx6i to, which for US$279 is one of the better deals around (I wich I had gone to an 8ch + system from day one): [link]http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LWE132&P=0[/link]

Shame, but it happens, so time to move on I guess (I normally find it's normally ignorance or arrogance. Most stores I have dealt with are either staffed by muppets, or they are up themselves little plonkers who are shocked your wasting their model setup time with things like questions or sales in stuff)

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
ORIGINAL: rcmadnessp51 I had them mounted with velcro to the bottom of the rudder and elevator servos, this was to get the c.g. at 4.5 inches. 4.8 volt nimh x 1500 ma. you may want to go with larger packs at least on your rx, a 2000 would probably be ok.
Firstly, sorry to hear you lost her ... really gutted for you! With the batteries, your not running spectrum are you? .... I have herd of brown out issues with the 4.8 packs when they get low. I have 5 cell Nimh (6volt) in my planes and heli (on spectrum DSM2), and never once have had the dreaded brown out issue. The newer DSMX receivers are meant to perform better at lower voltages. With 9 servos in this thing (all digital metal geared), I'm considering that 9ch rx that the do with twin battery inputs so you (I) have power redundancy built in. It'll mean 3 batteries all up, but rather a few more grams than the other alternative.

While I have some time on heli's before getting a plane, I'm personally finding that my Yak54 at 30% on all throws and with a good amount of expo is proving to be a great 2nd plane (seriously!!). While some will state I'm mad (your entitled to your opinion), it's light, has a really low wing loading, floats in for landings at stupid slow speed, and once tamed in re control surface throws and expo, is proving to be a really nice aircraft ..... and as the guy who did my initial test flight for me put it, "she fly's like a kitty cat"!! It was an educated and thought out punt when I went this way, but as the true nature of the beast is a dual rate switch away as I expected it to be. and it's fair to say that I'll NEVER out grow this 2nd plane!

made a positive contribution. I ran my DLE20 for the first time yesterday, and it runs very well but the sound level is horrendous!. Does anyone have a solution?
You make it sound like motor noise is a bad thing ;)

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
I was out of town for a couple of days and managed to get myself a nice wooden silver painted wooden prop for the P51, dam that thing is big compared to the on on my .61 glow powered yak (not quite you beasts prop there RCMADNESS) - though I feel it'll look slightly inadequate when I get around to getting the nito heli out with it's 600mm/23" long main blades on each side. That said, at under NZ$24 for the 16*8, I do like the 'cheapness' of the prop when comparing to the cost of heli blades, of which I spend more than that on just the tail blades, and up to $160-180 on the main blades. Shame the rest of the plane didn't come in like that! [;)] Will look to get a motor stand built at work next week so I can FINALLY test bed the DLE20!
ORIGINAL: rcmadnessp51 I have another interesting story to tell you about The Beast that you will enjoy. Will have to be later as I am out of time now......(remember to ask me about it so I dont forget) Re the exhaust, Not sure how you could get around cutting, If you do just be as neet as you can it will be fine (not the end of the world LOL). Even mine didnt fit perfect and I ended up with a hole lol. Good luck with every thing. Enjoy your new family members. (The dogs)
Does this count as a reminder re that Beast story? As for the exhaust, It's looking like I'll have to cut it, even if it DOES ruin the lines a bit, it will help with future cooling. Perhaps this weekend - IF I can find my specific tools in amongst all the boxes still to be sorted through. (i HATE moving! - even when it's moving back into my house post e/quake repairs) Looking to collect a wooden 16*8 prop when out of town later this week to at least allow me to spool the motor up on a test bed as I'm keen to hear her fire. With the servo to motor link, did you run a longer arm on the carb/throttle or anything to get around the tank being in the way? (still to get the manual and re-read it in fairness re servo connection) As for the dogs, Mason and Star will be collected from their respective foster homes this Friday to allow us to be there over the first weekend they are here, and together for that matter. All pretty keen since we got the last two hounds off the local Greyhounds As Pets 'office' since they are wrapping up the kennels in this part of the country (or 'world' as far as you go).

That "Beast" in the background looks really nice RcMadness - the one in my sim (phoenix) is a real handful that's for sure! Still, dogs sorted, we get them Friday, so now I "should" be able to go flying this Sunday since that and the finishing of the house repair's will see most things out of my hair between now and then!. (WOO-HOO!!!!!!) Still trying to decide what to do with this exhaust though!?!?! (opening it up to fit the exhaust will help a little re heat loss, but not look as good. This is turning into quite the sticking point)

Fantastic Rcmadness, great to hear it went well for you. If your a little worried re your unworthy video, just add it as a private video that needs the link to be found, as I'm dying to see it. Was going to go flying myself tomorrow, be we need to go look at a couple of rescued greyhounds we are looking to adopt, so perhaps next weekend! (on the yak)

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
ORIGINAL: rcmadnessp51 Thanks kiwibob, I did have to make one small hole in the top of the cowl (just big enough for a small screw driver)Â to be able to adjust the needle valve's. Also after my run up I noticed a spot on my cowl??? It turned out that my Pitts muffler is just touching and has already started to work through <img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/angry_smile.gif'' />grrrr. As far as the maiden, I will have to wate untill late this after noon or tomorrow, As the wife has found something for us to do this morning <img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/confused_smile.gif'' />
I hear you re 'particular' people within ones life finding things for us to do ..... mines GREAT at that!. kinda thinking it could be a good option to get the bits and have the boys at work make me a muffler, but I have time on my side if I decide to go down that path. Today I might make a start on fuse servos etc, or might just glue in the elevators ...see how time goes after I get done with Saturday chores (and whatever my wife needs doing)

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
ORIGINAL: rcmadnessp51 OK Kiwibob, I put the finishing touches on her today and ran up the motor, Spinning a 16x8 APC prop. The C.G. is set at 4.5 The all up wate came in at 10 lb 10 oz Maiden will be tomorrow Wish me luck
Wishing you more than luck on the maiden there Rcmadness ..... all the best, and I look forward to your post flight review (and or video - hint hint!) [;)] Mine won't be quite as neat as yours, my cruddy pitts is too fat along the side, and the metals not suitable for a cut and re-weld (anodized), and no-one over here stocks Jtec - so I'll have it sticking through the side of the cowl a little (grrrr) - but it could be worse, I could be still using that stock monster of an exhaust! Still, I wonder just how much to get an exhaust made up? (using mine as a design basis)

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
ORIGINAL: Mr67Stang Eleven months and no maiden yet? Get to it. Your missing out[:D] I have the DLE-20 in a Sig P-51b and it's a blast. Below is a link to the video of my maiden flight if that sort of thing motivates you... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaZuuaetpAU
I hear ya .... despite the dud finger causing me issues I am getting around to working on her slowly again. Got the motor 100% where I want it last night in relation to being centered, as she was 2mm off to one side. Once happy there, I started on doing the holes for the pitts exhaust as well. This is where it got annoying, as being as my locally obtained pitts is NOT a Jtec, it's looking like it might be a little fat around the side. I might have to open the cowl where the side of the muffler goes, which I am NOT happy about - I was hoping I could enclose it all other than exit pipes and spark plug lead. I'm fighting doing this at this point as I have noticed that the spinner (and thus motor) can come back about 1.5-2mm, and I'm going to see if moving it back a little will help with the in-cowl issue by moving the whole assembly back towards the fatter part of the cowl. I hoping I'll get the few mm's clearance I need, as if not, it's ugly bit out the side, or I get the welders at work to trim and re-weld the fat part of the exhaust away. I will need to open up the bulk head a little around the carb bolts and choke butterfly, but that said it will prevent the motor touching the bulk head and introducing hard vibration onto the air frame beyond the mount points themselves. Re taking 11 months, in my defense I only had access to my plane in January, as while we brought it in August last year, it was still a birthday present. So it's really only been about 6 months now, and for the last two we have been living out of boxes etc while the earthquake damage is repaired on my home. Does not mean I don't want her finished. I just need to finish learning to fly my other planes to a point where I'll be happy to fly (and land) her first - heli guy here!. Now that my wife's not working Saturdays anymore, I have more time open to me to spend up at the club since we don't have to condense an entire weekend into one day (WOO-HOO!!!!!!) [:D]

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
ORIGINAL: Ian Burridge kiwibob, Hurry up and get finished as you will love it. Mine is done out electric on 8s lipo and flies like a warbird should. No mixing when flaps deployed and yes you can bring it in long and slow with a little power on full flap. CG is middle of the range suggested but aileron is 60 0/0 of recomended. No idea of weight as I never weigh any of my models. Ian.
What did your come in at weight wise Ian? .... I'm starting to try to look at my baby getting through what I can with this confounded finger, just having a little fun finding all my required tools being as the interior painters are to only be finished this Friday, and half our stuff is still in boxes as a result. In fairness though, I'm only aiming for a early summer maiden flight (your winter), as I have not been able to fly a lot as required, and being kinda new to planes, due to work, family etc, I still need to spend more time on my Yak before I want to trust myself with the Mustang as I have not had the airtime to a point where I'm comfortable. PS, the Yak with the throws at 30% and with 25% expo is an utter kitty cat, it really hides the monster that lives under the control of my dual rate switch quite well! ;)

RE: How to handle the guys with flawed plans?
ORIGINAL: jester_s1 Being Southern, I couldn't respond so directly as to fall on the ground laughing. It's undignified. I'd have to put on my best ''taking you seriously face'' and say, ''Go ahead then, but I have a favor to ask. Please video it because I've always wondered what a turbine engine looks like when it hits the dirt at 100 mph and flies all to pieces.''
We somehow manage to be understated, yet at the same time a bit more up front down here, I'd almost consider it an art form at times, as there are some real idiots out there that deserve more than they get at times. (not too sure if the term is more than a local colloquialism or not, but we have a saying in that "a spade is a spade" meaning it is what it is - you could easily substitute "idiot" for 'spade', or a whole lot of other expletives for that matter, the result would be the same [;)]) And to answer your 'turbine/100mph' point, this should hopefully help with what may well be in store (lol): [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcuHOU0VnC8[/link]
