RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
I made a modification to charge the flight battery with out removing the canopy as follows: 1) by removing the cap and plastic threaded part from a 1/2 pint heavy cream container. 2)I than mounted the threaded piece of the container to a balsa plate and installed the charging jack in side of the threaded plastic part. 3) I than mounted the assembly ( the balsa plate, the charging plug and the plastic threaded piece ) to the top front portion of the fus. just above the battery. 4) I painted the cap gray to look like a radar antenna. Since the cap will keep the heavy cream from coming out of the container, theory tells me the cap will keep water out if screwed on tight. If any one would like a picture let me know

Yes. I have completed the covering. I just ordered the decal. The model is about 7 1/4 lbs and is ready to fly. Going to use a Thunder Tigre GP42 for power.

RE: GP Profile 38, first flight.. Pleasantly surprised
Yo Greg, If this is any help, I added one once of lead weight to the tail to obtain the correct CG. I also fabricated the horizontal stabilizer using ¼ inch solid balsa to strengthen the tail from twisting ( as was mentioned in previous statements by other builders). I also fully assembled the P38 and mounted all components to check the CG before covering. The CG was some what nose heavy and I thought I could move the battery and radio around to correct the CG. However I could not correct the CG and had to add the dead weight on the under side of the horizontal stab. The P38 flew well as balanced and the OS25 LA’s moved the plane with authority. Ken

RE: Maiden on the GP P-38 Yesterday.
Hi Bernd, I'm not sure about the engines you are using. I used two O.S. 25LA's but had to add about 1 ounce of tail weight to obtain the correct CG. Have you balanced your P38 yet? Your english it probably better than my German Ken

I think your CG set at 130mm will be OK, however I belive that the CG adjusted to 135mm will be best. Let me know how you do, Ken

RE: CMP Quest 50 ARF----????
HI All, I completed my maiden flight on my new Quest 50 and found the CG incorrect. At least the way I measured it. The 95mm to 105mm might be correct but not if you measure the distance at the root of the wing. When I measured the CG from the root of the wing I had to add about 8 oz. of nose weight to balance the plane. The first flight required a lot of up elivator to keep the plane in level flight. I removed the the nose weight and rebalanced the plane by measuring the wing length from the root to the tip of the wing, than take the half the distance of the wing and measure the 95mm on both sides of the wing and balanced it at that point. (At the root of the wing the distance is about 5 3/4 inches.) The second flight was much improved and required just a small amount of trim. My engine is a Sato Fa 56. Hope this helps you out Ken

RE: Maiden on the GP P-38 Yesterday.
Hi All, Sunday Oct 8th was the maiden flight of my P38. The weather was perfect, blue skies, temperature about 68 degrees, wind from one to five miles per hr. right down the runway and the trees are in their fall color. The pilot, Chris Zonio is a fellow Binghamton Aeros club member who made both flights. After the first flight we made several adjustments and one was to change the 6-degree of engine off set to zero. The P38 flew excellent and with out any problems. Chris made several low passes for pictures. Both flights caused most spectators to turn their heads and look at the P38. The sound of the 25 LA’s in sync. Was to say the least outstanding. Both engines turned about 8800 RPM with APC 9/6 props. I have added three pictures of the maiden flight to my gallery Ken

RE: Maiden on the GP P-38 Yesterday.
Yo RedRaiderFlyer, Just fired up my GP P38 for the first time using OS 25LA's and found excessive vibration caused by the plastic spinners. I decided to remove them and was able to reduce all of the vibration by balancing the APC 9/6 props and fine tuning the motors.

RE: Maiden on the GP P-38 Yesterday.
Check out my gallery photos. There is one pix. indicating the method I used to operate the split flaps I installed using one HS55 servo. I think that the 27 deg of flaps that I was going to use is too much and will decrease the flaps to about 10 deg. for the first run. Ken

RE: GP Profile 38, first flight.. Pleasantly surprised
Hi Greg, I have a Futaba 6EXA transmitter and the 127D 6 channel receiver. To operate the flaps, I am using the switch that is normally used to operate the retracs. I plan to start with about 27 degrees of flaps. The flaperon will be set up to operate using the flap control and I will program about 3 degrees of down elevator with the flaperon. I am using 3 Hitec 55 servos, one for each throttle control and one to operate the flaps. I am using four Futaba 3004's. to operate the front wheel steering, rudder, elevator and ailerons. If you go to my gallery you can see the set up for the flaps. I don't have any info for you onthe needle valves. I also plan to mount the engines motor mounts in line with the profile and set the engines with 6 degrees of off set using washers under the engine. If you would like pictures send me your email address. Ken

RE: GP Profile 38, first flight.. Pleasantly surprised
Hi Greg, I don't think rotating the engines will change the CG, however if it does I would think you could correct any slight change in balance when you do a final balance of the model. I have added split flaps on my P38 on the wing between the booms and will also use flaperons. Since several builders of this model had to add weight to the tail to correct the CG, I decided to change the stabilizer from the built up method to a solid 1/4 inch thick balsa material. Ken

RE: GP Profile 38, first flight.. Pleasantly surprised
Hi Henry, The P38 and booms are working out great! First I built up all of the assemblies as the instruction and planes indicated. I then decided to sketch out the conversion of the booms one half at a time just below the profile drawing. That is inboard side and outboard side independently for the right side boom. I cut the length of the support for the ribs starting from the leading edge of the wing to the tail. I then sketched out the ribs from the trailing edge of the wing to the leading edge of the elevator. I placed the ribs about 1 to 1.5 inches apart. I left space where the servo is going and will add the ribs later to support the sheeting. If you go to my gallery you will see a picture of what I just tried to describe. I plan to sheet over the wing as the instructions indicate after I install all of the servos and check out their functions. I will than add the half ribs top and bottom on to the sheeting. I believe the strength of the wing to booms will be acceptable and the half ribs are only window dressing. I’ll let you know if I’m correct after the first flight. If the wing falls off I’m wrong! I am also making tubes from heavy paper to allow me to change servos if need be. Once the boom half are assembled to the profile, it will not be easy to pull leads through. I am using Hitec 55 servos for throttle control and will place paper tubes for their removal should that be necessary. I am not using the planes for the servo installation. All servos in the wing will have access plates installed in the bottom of the wing for ease of service. And last, I have installed split flaps on the wing between the booms. If you have any question or would like some pictures let me know, Ken

RE: GP Profile 38, first flight.. Pleasantly surprised
Progress report on my P38 I have good news and some not so good news. The good news is that I have most of the major sub assemblies completed. The not so good news is that I started fabrication prior to reading the information in the RCU Forum! I had planed to use Hitec HS55 servos for the throttle, adding the extra wing support and maybe flaps. As you can see (in my galary pictures) I’m also working on the booms to convert them from a profile configuration. I’m not sure what this will do to the CG? Can any one tell me how much weight they added to the tail to bring the model into the suggested balance? The power will be two OS 25LA’s. Any feedback is appreciated. Ken

Just starting my first twin project using the P38 profile. Has any one made the revision to the stabilizer and rudders by going solid rather than building them up as per the planes? Ken
