RE: How many R/C airplanes do you have?
You can never have too many planes! Six gassers (88" H9 Carden Yak, 77" Goldberg Extra 330, 85"KMP 30% Extra 330, Pica 5th scale Waco, H9 1/4 scale Cub, and a Giant Aeromaster), Twelve glows (Top Flite Thunderbolt 60 and Corsair 60, H9 P-51 60-size, H9 Raptor, H9 Tango 40, Goldberg Tiger 60, Seagull Superstar 120, Seagull Ultimate Bipe 40, Great Planes U-Can-Do 40, Little Toni 60, Big Stik 60 and a Alpha), Eight electrics (ParkZone T-28, Corsair, Typhoon 3D, Sukaho 26, Ciabriata, Vapor, Slow-V and Airfoilz Yak 54,), Six helicopters (all the Blades), Three ARFs in boxes (Goldberg Edge, Giant Aeromaster, and Seagull Yak 54), Pica Waco 5th scale on the building board downstairs. There are many reasons that I'm divorced. This is only one ;)

RE: PowerExpander Sport Plus Ignition Cutoff
I didnt want to share my personal information with everyone, so I sent you my address in an email message;) However, I did want to share how much I appreciate the immediate response and the replacement. Also, I have three PowerExpanders Plus in my planes and I am very happy with them all. Thanks again.

PowerExpander Sport Plus Ignition Cutoff
I recently purchased the PowerExpander Sport Plus Ignition Cutoff for use in my new Hanger 9 Carden YAK 54. It has worked well in the first two fligts, but last night at the field the ignition did not energize. Verfied that the output light on the PowerExpander indicated that the signal was passed to the optical cable. Verified that the battery, connectors and Fromeco Badger switch passed voltage to the ignition card. Verified that the red light was working. Found that the input to the card from the switch was intermittent (i.e., when wiggled, the red light would illuminate). How do I go about getting a replacement for the ignition cutoff?

RE: BCMAEngines
My two centsI have had nothing but good interactions with Scott. He spent alot of time with me on the phone helping me understand an SPE 26 that I bought from someone else. Nothing in it for him but helping me out. My view of a standup guy. Also, I have dealt with Ed Cregger above. I purchased a plane (Giant Aeromaster). I was very happy with the deal (both price and shipping). Not only was it exactly as ordered, but he lowered the price and paid for my shipping even after I agreed to the full amount. He decided he was getting too good a deal. My view of another standup guy. What goes around comes around. Chris V

RE: Four Star 60 building. By a 54 year old beginner.
The DS821s will work fine, but a bit overkill to use digitals at $30 a pop. The Hitecs you already have installed will work fine with the DX7.

RE: Seagull Superstar 120
Finished and flew my new Superstar today. Had to give it three clicks down and it tracked true. Landing it was a little touchy, as the wind picked up to about 10 mph. Had 1/2" throw with 40% exp on the ailerons and that was a bit much. Toned it down to 3/8" and it handled well. Trouble is after ~8 minutes I landed and checked the tank and there was only about an ounce left! The OS 1.6 is a hog. Test ran it again on the ground and got 8-1/2 minutes on a tank of 10% Cool Power. Looks like I need a bigger tank. I have a new 24 oz Dubro, but wanted to know what anyone else's experience is. Does anyone know what size that stock tank is? By the way, I using an JXF 18-8 wood prop.

RE: DL-50 engine
No arrows, but the flow was in the correct direction. Even so, how does restricted fuel flow only work in the air and how does restricted fuel cause leaning at mid-throttle, but not WOT?

RE: DL-50 engine
I have been one of the ones following this thread closely for understanding my new DL50. Setting aside some of the conflicting opinions, it has been a great resource to me. Thanks to all of your advice, I believe I am coming up to speed more quickly and developing some informed opinions myself. Nevertheless, I still have some issues ;) One involves the use of a gas filter and the apparent adverse affect on my DL's performance. I could get it tuned well on the groundgood transition and a top end of ~7200 rpm with a 22B Vess using Lawnboy smokeless at 32:1. I had ground tested about a gallon. Based on Bob's (DLUSA) advice, I started some easy flying. The problem appeared to be the engine was leaning out in the air. Transition was sluggish and the mid-range had no power and lots of gurgling and hesitation. Only WOT seemed good. I had installed a [link=http://www.sullivanproducts.com/FuelSysComponentsMainFrame.htm]Sullivan Double-Screen "Crap Trap" Fuel Filter [/link]between the tank and the carb and was also using the [link=http://www.slimlineproducts.com/online_shop/excel_fueler.htm]Slimline Excel Gas Fueler [/link]. We discussed the potential need to vent the Walbro diaphram to inside the fuselage and, although we could not explain how air inleakage into the carb suction line could cause the problem I was seeing (i.e, change in tuning between the ground and the air), one of my flying buddies had the opinion that these components were unnecessary complications. first, I soldered a section of copper fuel tube to the carb diaphram vent and ran it into the fuse and I pulled the Slimline fueler and replaced it with a filling plug and tee between the carb and tank. More testing showed these problems weren't the culprit. However, when I cut the Sullivan crap-trap filter out and ran a gas line straight from the fueling tee to the carb my engine ran great. Now it runs the same on the ground or air, has great transition and no hesitations at mid throttle. For the life of me I can't figure out why the filter caused this symptom. By the way, nothing was in the filter. Any opinions?

RE: DL-50 engine
Got the new DL50 started tonight. Easy to start 5-10 flips of the prop. Ran too fast. No matter how low I took the throttle she stayed at half power. Adjusted the low end needle twice then gave up and put her back on the bench. Much head scratching. Checked the servos and could not get the throttle to close more. Tried againstill running way too fast. More bench time and eurika I found the newbie mistake. I had not removed the low end idle adjust so that the throttle was being held open. Removed the adjust screw and the throttle closed another 10% ;) What other mistakes can I make tomorrow?

RE: DL-50 engine
Thanks for the info and advice. I thought the power expander was a good idea so that I had the dual batteries and the voltage regulator. Also, I did not think I could put the gas/oil in the car. I would sure hate to have to spend money to repair the Dodge Hemi.

RE: DL-50 engine
Tonight I got my new DL 50 mounted on my new Goldberg Extra 330 that I found online from Graves RC in Florida. I bought the last Goldberg Extra 330 I could find online as well as a Goldberg Edge 540. Both planes are 77" . I plan on mounting a DL50 on the Edge next. I had lost my first Goldberg Extra 330 three weeks ago when my "buddy" crashed it by pile driving it into the runway. Post-mortem found that we had lost power to the Spectrum AR7000. Must have had a bad battery or broke a connection as he was churning the sky. Plane was a total loss as the motor was 8 inches in the dirt. The old-style aluminum mounts were mangled and one of the mounting ears broke off the engine casting. Muffler was also crushed. Although I did save all the electronicsall servos and receiver. Still I'm worried that the motor bearings or shaft may be damaged. It's currently with Bob at DLUSA for an estimate of repairs. Because I'm impatient, I had him send me a new DL50. This time I'm using dual batteries on a Smart-Fly PowerExpander with voltage regulator to a JR R921 receiver with four antennas. Talk about redundency! Unfortunately, I just now found that my new Vess 22B prop won't fit because the the stock prop bolts are not long enough to fit through the thicker Vess prop. Two questions. Does anyone know what size these four prop bolts are? They appear to be metric because none of my standard cap head bolts match. Also, I plan on running the engine tomorrow, but I have a gallon of 32:1 gas already mixed with Ryobi 4-stroke oil that I use on my Quadra 52 in my Giant Aeromaster. That gas/oil mixture seems to work fine on the Quadra. I do have some Lawnboy smokeless, but didn't want to (nor know where to) dispose of the gas I have already mixed. Do you think it will be a problem to use the Ryobi for the first gallon of break-in on the DL50.

RE: WACO YMF
can anyone direct me to the post on landing gear repairs. I broke the gear on my Cox Hobbies 1/6 scale Pica Waco tonight when I had to land with the wheel pant upside down. Grass yanked the pant off and snapped the wire at the weld inside the fiberglassing. I seem to recall a post by Khodges some time past on how he had fixed a similar problem, but I cant find it in the thread. There must be a better way to search this forum, but I haven't figured it out.

RE: Four Star 60 building. By a 54 year old beginner.
The tread is back! I missed your posts. I built mine plus two more. The wing on the second folded in half during our pilon race competiion between four local clubs. Planted eight inches in the field, saved the servos, but the spectrum reciever was broken in half! Put the thunder tiger 40 in my next 4* and it started on the first flip. Another race in two weeks, so I should start my building again ;)

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
Called Sig today and they were very helpful. Agreed to send me a new bottom wing. Also advised to file the aluminum spar edgesrounding them off to allow the top wing to fit better. Apparently, some glue gets in the wing spar channel and causes the spar to bind. That's my project for tonight.

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
Thanks Scott for all the information. I am almost finished with my build and this forum has been very helpful. I especially appreciate the post on the location of the gas caps. I couldn't figure where they went looking at the pictures. I also agree with others that the instruction manual was the best Ive seen-very helpful and friendly. I especially appreciated the advice on the "extras" installation. I used it all. Thanks for the info on the Wings dummy radial and the alternate TopFlite 1/7 scale . I just ordered one from Tower HobbiesI love the convienence of the internet shopping. I too have an problem with my lower right wing tip, in that today I noticed it was too flexible. Looks to me like its broken. I plan on calling Sig tomorrow to see about a replacement. One question you might be able to help with involves removing the top wings. I slid them onto the aluminum strut with no problem, but had a tough time removing them. They are so tight that Im worried that I will damage them when I need to remove them for transport to the field. Do you have any advice on how to make them looser. Should I try soap, wax or graphite onthe aluminum struts. I cant see how to open the slot in the wing without damage and am worried that applying some lubrication will gum up the slot and make them impossible to remove.

RE: Carl Goldberg Extra 330 ARF
Does anyone know a source for a replacement canopy and hatch cover? I bought a used CG 330 with a DL50, but the hatch has been modified to remove excess (?) weight and it is cracked. I have checked the Goldberg site and their new owner Great Planes, but they have no spare parts. Also checked with Tower Hobbies and they dont either. Any ideas?

RE: BCMAEngines
The hole must not be plugged. It transmits a pressure pulse to the carb to activate the diaphram that pulls fuel into the carb.

RE: BCMAEngines
Sounds exactly like what I was getting on my new SPE 26. Tried everything. Had the carb rebuilt by the local mechanic. Turned out that the ignition was bad. I too, thought I had spark--I could see one. Just before I gave up, I talked to Mark and bought a new ignition. Started on the first try. Its expensive, but after everything else fails, don't assume you have a good ignition just because you see a spark.

RE: BCMAEngines
Adam helped me replace a bad ignition for an SPE 26cc I purchased elsewhere. Although not immediately available, he answered my calls and left me a message. When I called back, he was quite helpful and spent alot of "free" time on the phone answering my questions and explaining how the SPE worked. His ignition started this problem child in the first try. He even sent me another "tuned" magnet pickup wire at no expense. For what its worth, my experience was positive. Chris VanDenburgh

RE: 2nd plane -- Pulse XT or 4 Star?
My first plane was an old alpha trainer with an OS .46Max that was a powerhouse. My second was the Hanger 9 Mustang P-51 PTS. I love the look of this war bird and once I pulled all the training aides off, it flys beautifully. I just love the low passes. My next was the Pulse, but I didn't fly her until after I built my 4-star 40 kit. The pulse is prettier and flys better than the 4-star, but there is something about flying something you built yourself. My solution--get them both! Get them all--you can never have enough planes.
