RE: The Tanker's Lounge
Found this thread on Cast vs Welded. At first glance it would appear that casting had the advantage of speed and less skilled labor to produce in mass. I've also read that the size of the casting (entire hull vs composite) depended upon the max casting size capabilities of the factory. http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/thread/1293850885/Sherman+Cast+vs-+Welded+Hull+Overall+Strength

A little blurry, but you might be able to read it, or know what to look for.....[:D] This is NOT in the main build instruction book. There is a small supplement - mainly dealing with RC operation. Good luck.

RE: How to hibernate rc tanks?
I think you are asking about sleeping you Tamiya in the middle of a battle after it has been knocked out so it will not reset and start taking damage again. If so, here is a link to the DAK Armor radio page. They have the link to a S.C.A.T. article that gives you a few different options. http://www.desertarmor.com/DAK_RADIO_ROOM/Radio_Room_2011.html click on the Spektrum DX6-Putting Your Tank to Sleep.pdf link

RE: tiger turret
Slide it under the two tabs at the back of the turret from the storage boxes. Mainly it is just a tight fitting piece. In multiple years of battling I've only had the top come loose once.

RE: first rc
The Tiger is a great first build. It should work fine out of the box, yet you can add mods/upgrades as you see fit. If you cannot find a local hobby store that stocks the Tiger check out the American Armor Foundation (AAF). Not only do they sell Tamiya kits & parts at very reasonable prices, they host one of the nicest indoor battlefields you will every see. http://shop.aaftankmuseum.com From the FAQ thread, a little dated but the info should help;
TAMIYA TANK OWNERS FEEDBACK ON TAMIYA TANKS: NOTE: Updated to reflect reader comments (*) The purpose of this thread is to give some factual advice to those considering purchasing Tamiya Tanks. I hope to dispel the myth that all Tamiya tanks require hundreds of dollars in upgraded parts just to work. The three tanks listed below that I built were built STOCK, and meant to battle, complete with IR battle systems. * Except for Gear Reduction and Idler Adjuster in my Tiger I, all the tanks run stock. We will be listing the following regarding STOCK Tamiya Tanks - no major drive train / track mods. 1) Know Issue(s) - 2) Their Severity - 3) Recommended Fix(es) If you have built or operate a Tamiya tank, please feel free to add to the list. ALL TANKS: 1) Turret Rotation Unit is weak - 2) The more you hand turn the turret the worse it gets - 3) Either super glue the clutch or replace with a solid gear (Tamiya Gearbox Kit #72005). Proper cable management can help * Some like to upgrade from the stock Brass Bearings to Sealed Bearings. Grease MUST be plastic safe. (Jeff) TIGER I: (built plus feedback) No Major Issues - 1) The Track Tensioner could be better - 2) Keep an eye on you track through out the day. The tracks can jump on the idler wheel - 3) Fabricate your own Tension system, or purchase an aftermarket tensioner (Daryl Tuners upgrade). 1) Main Gun Barrel Seam - 2) May cause recoil issues - 3) Careful sanding, filling, and painting of the seam,or replace with metal barrel. * 1) Gear Box Brace - 2) Helps reduce gearbox and chassis flex. Metal Tracks cause more stress - 3) Fabricate your own or purchase after market (pcomm1) KING TIGER: (have not built, based upon club member feedback) 1) Track Tensioner - 2) This is a major issue. If not adjusted properly, it can lead to track link breakage. - 3) Very careful adjustment of the stock unit, fabricate your own or purchase an aftermarket tensioner (Daryl Tuners upgrade). 1) Track Links are weak - 2) & 3) See Above - Tamiya has sent some tankers replacement tracks. * 1) Gear Box Brace - 2) Helps reduce gearbox and chassis flex. Metal Tracks cause more stress - 3) Fabricate your own or purchase after market (pcomm1)
RE: The origins of Heng Long tank designs
Those of you who want to make this a class warfare issue, it isn't. I make my living as an architect. A lot of time, effort, and money goes into creating and presenting designs. I'd get kinds PO'd if someone was not only stealing my ideas, but using copies of my own drawings to sell them to someone else. Heng Long deserves credit for their original designs, but lets not forget that they got into the tank business. You can justify it anyway you want, but that doesn't change what they did. If want to buy from Heng Long, that is your choice. Just don't be surprised by the lack of products in a market were vendors know that anything they design can be quickly and cheaply knocked off, and most buyers will gladly seek out the lowest priced copy, regardless of who brought it to market.

RE: The origins of Heng Long tank designs
I agree, a Tiger is a Tiger..... but when you start copying art work and the commander figure - is it really that hard to believe they cloned the exterior of the tank? There are even some screw holes Tamiya has on their road wheel that appear on the HL's We should be rewarding original work. If everyone is just going to go around and knock off each others products with impunity, then what is original creators incentive to keep creating?

RE: The origins of Heng Long tank designs
Tamiya would have brought suit long ago if there was any copying going on.
Yeah, because we all know how well the Chinese protect foreign intellectual property rights....[8|] HL clearly "borrowed" the exterior work of their first two tanks (Tiger I and Snow Leopard/Pershing) from Tamiya. What they did was simplify the interior and RC components for cheap, mass production. Portions of the original box art for the Tiger were straight from Tamiya. The tank commanders are still copies of their Tamiya counterparts. Even the "design errors" in the HL Tiger could have been placed there to help differentiate the HL Tiger from Tamiya's and avoid being called a direct copy. With the Panzer III and Bulldog they finally finally started coming up with unique designs. Credit HL all you want for expanding the hobby and making 1/16 scale tanks affordable, but they clearly would not have done so unless Tamiya had done it first.

RE: Coming soon to this forum (not for the rivit counters)
BIGMIG, While I can appreciate the technical accomplishment and ingenuity it will take to make this work, posting how to make a rocket launcher with an exploding warhead is WAY out what should be acceptable for this forum. Just because you CAN do something does not always mean you SHOULD do it - or at least don't post it for the world to see. As you even state there may be young impressionable minds reading this site. You've stated that you will keep everything small scale, that will not stop someone else from copy the design for a larger and more dangerous project.

RE: Tamiya Tiger Build Advice
I use the Testors liquid cement, so thin will work. Just need to use the right amount and keep the pieces together till it sets up. I use shoe goo for rubber cement. Also to hold on any accessories on the outside of the tank. It gives a bit when bumped and the parts come off with a slow steady pull. The Side skirts on my Tiger were being ripped off so often I started using shoe goo to hold them on

S.C.A.T. Battlefield Update!
TO : All members of S.C.A.T. RE : New Battlefield! Bill K has generously offered his yard in Temecula as a site for our new battlefield. The land is unimproved and will need work before it is 'tank ready' . I'd like to get idea about how many people would be interested in helping with a Build Day. Bill describes the site as approximately 25' x 35'. The back slopes a bit, but not as much as Steve's did. It is next to his G scale outdoor trains…… no we will NOT be driving the tanks through his train layout ; - ) If we get enough interest (Sean and I are in) then I'll send a few prospective days to choose. PLEASE RSVP - A) Is the site one you'd be willing to drive to? B) Could you be available to help with the Build Day? For you guys up in north Orange County or LA this is farther south. The good news is that we might pick up a few more of the guys in San Diego. It could be about an 30 minutes closer for the brave souls from DAK that make the long trek across the desert. I am putting this out both via email (see list below) and the internet forums because it seems that some members emails may have changed or are missing and I want to make sure we reach everyone. Feel free to pass it on to anyone I may have missed. RE: A question of trees on the battle field....
The boys from DAK brought these when we where demoing tanks on a concrete floor at RCX a few years back.... The thinner the wood the 'cleaner' it looks, but weighs less and is easier for the tanks to push around. Beveling the edges could help You could drill two holes in in each base and use two spikes to stop the tanks from pushing them around. Still punching holes in the ground, but better than doing it for each tree.

RE: Tamiya Tiger Build Advice
Check out the DAK (Desert Armor Korps) Radio Room http://www.desertarmor.com/DAK_RADIO_ROOM/Radio_Room_2011.html They seem to have no problem using Spektrum 2.4 GHz radios with Tamiya tanks. They even have a guide about setting up DX6 (programable). I've used both the DX5e and the DX6i with my Tamiya tanks.

RE: Tamiya Tiger Build Advice
From my FAQ post 5 years ago..... still valid TIGER I: (I built one plus feedback club members) No Major Issues - 1) The Track Tensioner could be better - 2) Keep an eye on you track through out the day. Metal Tracks cause more stress - 3) Fabricate your own or purchase after market (pcomm1) Additional - Tamiya turret rotation is weak. You can add a wire tie around the motor to stiffen. The clutch gear can be super glued or replace with a solid gear. - Just ask if you can't find the old posts.

RE: Trumpeter T-34s
The biggest complaint I'm aware of was the cheap plastic gear box. They can be replaced with aftermarket / HL units, but it is a bit of work. The suspension was week (Daryl Turner makes a very nice aluminum upgrade) and the suspension and hull were deemed to be too flexible. Here a good review of the basic kit on Willy'd RC Custom Models site (if you did around the site you will find links to Daryl's upgrades) http://www.customrcmodels.com/Tanks/id94.htm This DAK article about a SU-85 conversions shows some of the steps taken to re-enforce the suspension / hull http://www.desertarmor.com/DAK_PROJECTS/SU-85.html
