RE: Engines for Hangar 9 Twin Otter
I went with a Twin-sync setup on mine. LOVE IT and the installation was pretty straight forward. The biggest issue is getting the servo end points set up correctly so you get maximum sensitivity from the unit. I elected to put the sensor magnets in the spinner hubs. I am quite pleased with the operation and the engines are within 100-200 rpm of each other. One other HUGE advantage is that if you have an engine out, the active engine immediately goes to idle. Already saved my bacon on a touch and go. http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/WRCTWINSYNC.html

RE: Kit for twin Saito 62's?
*** Edit: just saw korvette's post with the link.....Sorry for the duplication I took the twin otter and reworked it to suit my own taste. I striped the covering, glassed and painted it and converted it from A DHC6-300 to a -100 (1966 snub nose). The model came in just under 15lbs (+/- 3lbs over the standard arf) The FA62's are a perfect match for the heavier airframe. Although, I had to do quite a bit of rework to the nacelles to fit them in. A short video.....it was getting late so the quality isn't great. http://youtu.be/kdffK5v5fJM PS....The TF DC3 is on my list as well.

RE: Engines for Hangar 9 Twin Otter
Those mufflers may be a good solution. I'll look into it. After so much building over the winter, I think I'm going to enjoy this bird a little before I make any changes. With regard to the finish, it is actually modeled after the Norwegian Special Forces aircraft used from 1967-2001! The plane later got around some and unfortunately met it's demise not far from where I live here in Georgia, US. I found that out after I was well into the project. Good thing I am not superstitious. http://www.719skvadron.no/dhc6/dhc6-news.htm If you're thinking about going with 4 stroke glow, I'd seriously look at the OS FS56 or better yet, the YS FZ70-S. Both have a smaller footprint than the Saitos and deliver more power. The YS has a crazy amount of HP. I went with the Saitos because I already had one of the required two and did not want to incur the added cost. Keith

RE: Engines for Hangar 9 Twin Otter
Below are a few photos. I had to rework the nacelles to get the 62's to fit. I extended the cowls appx 1/2" by adding blocks to the existing firewall and then filled in recessed space that the nacelles originally mounted to with 1/32 ply and filler. In addition, I removed the tank floor of each nacelle and made a new one appx 3/4" lower to achieve the correct center-line relationship of the tank to the carb. I used a combination of maple, basswood and light 1/4" plywood to reinforce the construction after cutting out the floor. I bumped the tanks from 8oz to 10oz and I'm glad I did. My last flight was 8.5 minutes and I used appx 5oz of fuel. With regard to the exhaust, I used a 90 degree adapter (tapped for pressure) with a straight pipe out the bottom of the nacelle. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like a turbine.....more like a hot rod! [:D]

RE: Warbird Colors vs Nelson Paints
Both products apply VERY well. Actually, I like the way WBC goes on a little better than Nelsons. HOWEVER......my BIGGEST issue that divides the two has to do with resistance to chemicals. Denatured alcohol will soften the WBC finish (even when the crosslinker has been added) while MEK or Acetone will remove it completely after it's dried and cured. Nelsons is resistant to all previously mentioned and is hard as nails. After all.....who doesn't need to clean up a little oozed out 5 min epoxy? Having alcohol take off the WBC finish was a disappointment for me. Sorry Chuck. Love your stuff but...... Nelsons has my vote.

RE: Hangar 9 produced the Twin Otter!
Attached are a few photos of my completed H9 Otter. Stripped/glassed and finished to resemble the Norwegian special forces 057 livery. Twin Saito 62's. The nacelles had to be highly modified to get these engines to fit and to locate the fuel tanks properly. 14.75lbs. Maiden pending the arrival of additional nerve. Does this meter REALLY display voltage AND capacity under load? I have not found documentation that indicates this is true.

RE: Engines for Hangar 9 Twin Otter
I'm in the process of doing a makeover to the H9 Twotter. I am making a DHC6-100 instead of the -300. I did quite a bit of research on engines so hopefully you can benefit. Since I am recovering/glassing/painting, I was not confident the Saitos 40's would perform with the increased weight. The FA-40 appears to be the only 4 stroke engine that will fit without modification. Below is what I found. I elected to go with the Saito FA62A's since they are in the same case as the FA56, and I already own one of the required 2. I also extend the cowl instead of cutting into the firewall as I also increased tank size from the standard 8oz tank to 10oz. The line of the prop still appears to be in line with the fuse in a scale location. I'll post pics when I get some. Disclaimer.... the dims for the Magnum below is the best I could determine. Info for that engine is hard to find. Below is my target model [image]http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k262/kthmarks/DHC6-100.jpg[/image]

RE: Hangar 9 produced the Twin Otter!
ORIGINAL: thailazer kthmarks..... A snub nose would be a pretty quick project. Get some blue dock-billet Styrofoam, carve it to shape with a saw and a sure-form rasp, and then fill it with microfill before you put on a layer of light glass. I had my whole fuse carved out and micro-filled in one evening. Sat in a lawn chair next to the full scale ship as I did to make sure I got the lines

RE: Hangar 9 produced the Twin Otter!
Joe, Thank you. I will start reading. I see in one of the early postings (on the other board) where I am not alone about preferring the -100 model (round nose). It's just a nicer looking profile. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. BTW....we've got about 6"of snow here in Atlanta today......you guys up north......CAN HAVE IT! ;o)

RE: Hangar 9 produced the Twin Otter!
I am seriously considering this plane and would be going with glow engines. From a previous thread apparently Saito 40's fit well. Based on that dimension it looks like a few models of the OS FS would fit as well (I am a 4 stroke junkie). My only complaint about the design of this plane is the nose....and well, choice of finish. While this plane is modeled after a DHC 6-300 (pointed nose), the rounded nose of the DHC 6-100 profile is WAY more aesthetically pleasing IMO. It looks like some rework on my part is in order.

RE: Focus Sport 110 YS Powered
I fly mine with a Saito 120 with 15% fuel. I could not recommend anything lower in hp. It flies very well but the vertical performance is certainly not unlimited. I think a 120 2 stroke would carry this plane well as would a YS110. A YS91 might do the trick with 30% and was proped correctly.

RE: Focus Sport 110 YS Powered
ORIGINAL: maynardrupp I called Central Hobbies yesterday and was told that the YS 115 might be available by September or October. I then decided to order a Focus Sport and power it with an OS 120AX. Next I was told that the Focus Sport is no longer being produced. They do have a few ARC planes in stock though. Well, I can cover as well or better than they can but I am not sure I want to get involved with a plane that has no repair parts available and they don't supply full size plans so I can make what I need. What a dilema.[&o]
I've been flying mine for a couple of seasons now......I have not required any replacement parts....if you're concerned, see what they'll charge for an extra cowl and wheel pants....for grins. I have a Saito 120 in mine...it flies great! The 120ax will be plenty.
