RE: Camarillo, CA Channel Islands Condors Field Closure
You think the club members would have dealt with the fire as soon as the plane went in, instead of letting it spread to the point that the fire department had to be called! Bad things happen when your club members are too lazy and unprepared with a fire exstinguisher to take care of a fire on their own like almost all the jet guys are! But this is Kalifornia which is a state with many takers and few doer's! I wouldn't live there with all the helpless fools that call it HOME!!!

RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
I think 50cc is the best for many reasons, 1) I can start it on my own from behind that means I don't have to bother any of the other flyers that are too lazy to get off their rears and give a hand! 2) It is large enough to be stable on windy days that we have alot of here in south Texas! 3) one metal gear servo per surface is more than enough! 4) I can pick it up and put in my van without worrying about breaking my back doing so! 5) Less chance of hitting the tail trying to get it through a doorway! 5) Big enough I can see it when I fly way out from the strip!

RE: Question??
The Wright brothers were the first to achieve powered manned flight! Langley had much more powerful engines but his propeller developement was his downfall. He designed propellers like the ones used on boats and could not get more than 50% efficiency out of any of the ones he produced! The Wright brothers developed the first practical wind tunnel and with much testing developed a propeller that produced about 90% efficiency which is very close to what a modern day propeller performance is. Many believe that their propeller developement was their greatest achievement, even though there were many great ones! Glenn Curtis patented the aileron which replaced wing warping but was accused of stealing the design from the aerial experiment association in which Alexander Graham Bell had founded and Curtis had been a member of, but who knows for sure!

Personally, I have no idea why anyone would want to spend hours-days-weeks-months-years on a project of forming and glueing sticks together, but to each his own! The newer top shelf laser cut arf's, like pilot, are much lighter and fly so much better than the heavier planes of the past ever did! I don't have the time or patience to build so I buy arf's and if you have a problem with it and think lesser of me because I'm missing the true essence of the hobby(in your opinion) all I can say is shove your disdain for me where the sun don't shine!!!

RE: Life battery packs
I wish I knew what the intermittent peak current draw was in flight when the sticks are really being twisted but I don't, I have alot of 7955 and 8611a servos and I at times can show my planes very little mercy, usually the older ones. I have only minimum voltage to go by and the voltage drop is much less the higher the c-rating of the battery. When I bought my dx8 and started putting in telemetry modules is when I found out my nimh batteries didn't perform well, I changed to life batteries and the voltage drop issues miraculasly disappeared!

RE: Life battery packs
Over the last year I have converted almost all my planes to life batteries and am very impressed compared to the nimh batteries I used to use. The planes I mainly fly are between 50cc to 120cc with digital servos on most of them. I do have telemetery for showing lowest voltage during a flight on both ignition and reciever. I recommend using the higher c rating life packs for your reciever power because of fluctuating current drain you get from servos, especially digital ones. I prefer 30c life packs but do have a few 20c packs on my planes. The ignition is a constant low drain so I find c ratings as low as 3c to be sufficient.

I don't know if it has to do with flying sights, we have two great ones in my area, we have probably a million people living in the lower rio grande valley and had low winds this past weekend and we had 4 pilots at one field saturday and 3 at the other sunday! Five years ago it would have been at least 10-15 people at each of them. We would have had warbirds galore 5 years ago and we now have 2 warbird guys left.

JollyPopper, I agree 100% and have worked all my adult life in a skilled trade. I have trouble finding any younger men that want to learn my trade even though it is in great demand! The majority of kids want to go to a community college and get a degree in worthlessness so the can be a manager at a Kentucky fried chicken rather then work out in nature and deal with the heat in the summer and cold in winter. They could care less of learning any mechanical skills that could save them a great deal in the future! I agree 100% that we are a dying breed that will be soarly missed when we are gone!

I had a talk with one of our associate AVP's yesterday on the overall decline I am seeing at a couple clubs that I am a member of to get his take on it. He first off told me the AMA is very aware of it and that a few areas are doing well, but most are not. He did mention the pacific northwest as one example of growth but that was all he mentioned. He did mention higher gas prices as a temperary problem, but also stated the average age of an AMA member is well up there, and many long time members, even though they don't fly anymore continue to support the AMA and pay membership, but don't participate much, if any anymore. He did tell me that the next election for president is very important for the future of the AMA and he is clearly not a supporter of the current one.

RE: Where is this hobby going
We used to be a country that built and manufactured many things! We used to have a general population where most had at least some mechanical skills if not many! Today we have become a retail society that mostly buy and sell foreign products because it is much more profitable for the money junkies of the world to use slave labor to build products then to pay a living wage here in the US! The sad part of this all is that most of the younger generation don't possess the mechanical skills to put a trainer together, let alone a giant scale aircraft and don't particularly care to learn! If you have been in this hobby at least 5 years and haven't noticed a decline in participation, than your club is an exception, compared to most! Yes, this is a dying and or declining hobby, if you don't believe me, try to sell your used aircraft, engines and radio equipment and see if you can even get 50 cents on the dollar for what you spent! I bet a quarter on the dollar, if that, is the average if the truth was known! I love flying my giant scale aircraft and hope for the best but must look at reality and it ain't so great for this here hobby or country!

RE: LiFe or Lipo with regulator??
I have a dx8 with telemetry on most of my planes and I have replaced all my nimh batteries after recording in flight voltage drops as low 4 volts with them. I use mainly dual turnigy life batteries with a min. of 30c discharge and have next to no in flight voltage drop now. I did also find a switch that was causing a voltage drop in a plane so I replaced the switch with 2 new switches with dual batteries! I'm sure countless radio manufactures have been trashed by rc pilots after crashes when the TRUE culprit of the crash was a weak or worn out reciever battery

Evolution gas engines and horizon I'm pissed!
I just wasted a half an hour on hold at horizon hobby, twenty minutes waiting to talk to tech support and ten minutes waiting for someone to take my number and name down so they could call me back, I finally hung up!!! Why do you not answer your phone even to take my phone number down, do you think your time is more important then mine or do just not give a shinola? This is the kind of customer service that loses customers! I have several evolution gas engines and other than carburator issues due to the ethanol in our gas, "thanks government", the ONLY other issue I have had is blown out cylinder gaskets on my 58, 80 and 116! I have dealt with the gasket issue on my 58 and 116 and have been instructed to cross hatch the surfaces before replacing the blown out gasket and have had some what good success! I bought a new 80cc evolution engine a couple of years ago and since it was a new engine I thought evolution would have resolved this foot gasket issue but two weeks ago I had a dead stick on my ultimate and damaged the plane! When I pulled the cowl off I found the cylinder gasket in the back of the engine blown out!!! Why has this long standing issue not been resolved??? Why would I recommend an evolution engine to anyone with this issue not resolved, and like an achoholic you have to admit you have a problem and then do whatever you have to do to remedy it, NOT SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG!!! I see that this gasket is back ordered with no due date on this new engine and want to ask why but I can't even get horizon to answer their phone, how PATHETIC!!! Since their are no gaskets in stock this must not be an isolated issue and many more people must also have this happening but would horizon ever admit to that, hell, they can't EVEN be bothered to ANSWER THEIR PHONE, so I'm sure they are not!! HORIZON DO YOU CARE????

RE: Spektrum vs. Futaba?
I run 18#-3c wire from my receiver to the servos and solder the connections between. I buy 18#-4c sound and security wire from home depot and remove the green wire and outer jacket to accomplish this. I know it's overkill but I wonder what amount of voltage drop that I do get compared to someone that buys extensions that are either 20-22 guage with the additional connectors! This would be neat if someone would research this and actually record what the actual voltage drop is between the receiver and heavy duty digital servos at full load with different types of wiring setups! I bet we would all be amased by the readings!

RE: Spektrum vs. Futaba?
I have been using spektrum equipment for 5 years with zero loss in planes due to the radio system! I bought a dx8 about a year ago and started adding telemetry modules to my planes and that is when I found that many of my planes had inadequate batteries on them! I had voltage drops as low as 4.6 volts in flight so I started replacing the nimh batteries out with high discharge life batteries with 20-30c discharge and the voltage drops stopped on all my planes except one. I found that I had a defective switch that was creating the voltage drop on higher loads from digital servos on the plane and after the replacement of the switch the problem disappeared. I am a big fan of telemetry and believe it may have saved me one or two planes! If you are too cheap and do not use telemetry and you lose your plane to a re-occuring radio issue then the crash is "YOUR FAULT" for being a cheap arse!!! I do have to admit the satelite extensions from of all places, hobby king are much better made with thicker wire and or insulation than oem spektrum extensions!

RE: New Planes For Sale That Have Never Been Flown
I'm a guy that started out like most people crashing and or damaging my planes quite often, so I was always building them to keep up with demand! Well a strange thing happened, I quit damaging my planes and they started hanging around. I now have nine gas airplanes from 20cc to 116cc and my 125 glow funtana, I just don't have time to fly them all and also have my favorites that I fly more often. I have thought about selling a few of them that I don't fly much and know that I will take such a beating trying to sell them that I don't consider that an option. I got caught up in the addiction and rush of buying parts and airframes and I didn't quit until the maintainence of ten planes finally overwhelmed me! I still look at new planes on the different websites but I'm going on a year of plane buying sobriety in april and hope I can stay strong enough to resist the urge and make it, but it is always there! I'm really not that bad I have a buddy that has over 20 planes, so compared to him I'm not that addicted, well thats what I keep telling myself...LOL!!!

RE: working age of Ni-Mh
I would take this as a good time to change over to life batteries, I have dealt with nimh batteries for over five years and have now upgraded to life batteries! I fly mainly larger planes with digital servos and didn't know how big of voltage drops I was getting in flight when most of the servos were moving until I bought a dx8 with telemetry and checked the min. voltage of the flights! All my life batteries are 6.6 volt 10 to 30c discharge with NO voltage regulator and the voltage drops that nimh batteries gave me have completly become a thing of the past! Move up to the new technology and you will be pleasantly surprised with them! My life batteries are usually completely charged in 30 minutes or less and that beats the heck out of overnight any time! I use lipos on my 4.8 and 7.4 volt ignitions and add regulators for the 4.8 volt ones!

My opinion is go with high grade servos or please don't come around our club! I have to admit I have had three hitec servos go bad, 2-645's and 1-5645, all on ailerons. They didn't cause a crash but started jittering to the point they had to be replaced. I have been won over by my experience with futaba servos, they are much quieter and soother compared to hitec and jr servos. The majority of servos in my nine gas planes are hitec so they have been good enough!

I'm a choke servo guy and it has saved me a few times! I have had to choke planes that have had the muffler come loose and not idle down low enough to land safely. An opti-kill would just be one more link in the electrical chain that could fail and leave me dead in the air at the wrong time and or place! I like to impress people with one flip starts that would not be possible without a choke servo. I flip the prop with the left hand and open the choke switch on the transmitter with the right hand!

I have had jitter problems on ailerons from three different planes in the last year and a half, I have successfully repaired two planes and haven't made the effort on the third one yet. I do not have retracts on any of my planes because I am more into aerobatic airplanes, but so far the two planes I repaired were both defective hitec servos, one was a 645 the other a digital 5645. I was sold on hitec early on by fellow flyers recommendations, but my personal experience with futaba digital and anolog servos on two planes has sold me on them. They are "so smooth and QUIET"! I don't use futaba's radios but I will use their servos from now on!

RE: Biplane Flight Differences
I have a pitts sr2 and to me the take off is the hardest part of the flight! The planes tracks straight up to a certain point and will whip to the left the last part of the take off and you have to be on your toes with right rudder to correct this but many times I find that that is very difficult to do. I am fortunate to have enough power to get up in the air before the plane reaches the rough, taller grass on the side of our strip. My ultimate takes off straight, even in cross wind and is a breeze to land as long as you control the sink rate with the throttle. The ultimate is so easy to fly you just point it and it tracks straight withe little correction needed. I have a world models 33% ultimate( i think aeroworks first produced it) with an eighty cc single on it and it is the only plane that will do a long slow roll without much down elevator needed(inverted) to keep it level. I rate it over several gas planes that I own, those being my cap232, edge540, katana, giant scale stik, pitts sr2, yak 54 and extra 260. My ultimate is much harder to put together at the field, but the out of this world great flying it does is well worth the extra effort! I have got used to putting the flying wires on it even though they are a pain in the rear!
