RE: Build of WACO SRE - Vintage R/C Plans
My other wing is now just about at the same stage as the first. I am currently working on a retention system for the flying wires.

If only I could afford those... I'm afraid it's out of the question. Are the cables on the YMF the same as on the SRE?

RE: WACO YMF
Thank you Joe. The trouble is, I'm not sure which size I would then need. Secondly, my wires have to go through the wing surface and the attachment has to be entirely hidden as on the 1:1. I believe that the Mick Reeve's wires have to be kept under tension when installed, which will complicate the installation, no?

RE: WACO YMF
Hi everyone, I have a question. As written on my WACO SRE thread: The brackets have been completed and the left N-strut has now also been made. That took some time as everything had to been measured, checked and re-checked etc. But it fits beautifully. I can now go ahead and design/make the flying wires (or are they landing wires?). Does anyone happen to know the thickness and width of the full-scale ones? I was thinking of making them out of a firm material, such as carbonfibre rods, which could then be fixed at one end and then the other end could simply be pushed into a piece of fuel tubing in the wing to hold it in place...

The brackets for the upper wings have now also been made, and the upper port wing has them fitted. Now the other side to go, and then I can go ahead and make the N-struts, followed by the flying wires.

Hey Dan, Thanks for your post about the flying wires from Mick Reeves. I can't find them anywhere on the Mick Reeves website. What scale are they and do you think I could use them on my 1/6th WACO SRE? Thanks, Kim

RE: Build of WACO SRE - Vintage R/C Plans
Indeed, that's why I glued a piece of ply to the spar and made a bracket to go over the spar with the little block, so that the strut position could be made correct :)

Next I want to move on to the flying wires, but before doing so wanted to ensure that my wing incidence is exact so that the angles of the flying wires are precise too. For that I needed to complete the mid-section of the lower wing, which meant installing the ACl light on the underside. I'm using Oratex by the way.

RE: Build of WACO SRE - Vintage R/C Plans
The locations of the N-struts on the wings shown on the plans turned out not to be precise scale so I have altered them. I have also altered the method of linking them; I have installed brackets, set at the correct angles.

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
If I were you I'd send SIG an email, they do have parts available, like the spinner for me, that are not easy to find on their site. For the spinner they sent me a code I could search for and then it was easy to find.

Okay, so SIG does supply the spinners :) I have just ordered two of them. Although I don't have the ARF, I think you can lay out the broken windshield and trace around it and make a new one yourself, right?

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
I've sent an email to SIG asking if they sell the spinner as a separate item. Thanks for the link to Kavan, unfortunately the SRE is out of stock and I doubt they will carry such specific parts. I'll wait for the reply from SIG and if they sell it as a seperate item I can probably get a European reseller to order it for me.

A little. I have added some detail at the bottom of the panel, for the oil cut-off and by-pass. Just a coupl emore details to go on and then I can fit the dash in the fuselage. Sorry for the bad quality of the pic, but you can see the additions at the bottom of the panel.

Gee, thanks! -But there's always room for improvement. I build far too slow. And that dashboard, well, it doesn't even count towards points at F4C competitions. But I decided that if I was going to make it scale, all of it should be. "If you're going to do a job, do it properly"... I ought to put more time in practising my flying, God knows I need it! Anyway, thank you for the compliment!!!

RE: Build of WACO SRE - Vintage R/C Plans
The wing tips are constructed by laminating layers of balsa strips. I first made an MDF former or jig, to suit the shape on the plans. I then made the balsa strips and soaked them in water before using wood glue to stick them together, following the curve of the MDF. To hold them in place I believe I used loads of sticky tape wrapped around them. This was then left to dry. When removed they kept their shape and, as I made them a little too long on purpose, I placed them onto the plan and marked them up before cutting to the right size. Then just sand them and glue them onto the wing construction. I hope this helps, but if it still isn't clear please let me know!
